I was contemplating if I should write a review or not but after several weeks of having nothing else in my life except for this drama, I decided I need some form of closure. I haven’t read the novel and only seen the first episode of the anime before I watched The Untamed, so this review is from my own opinion about the drama.

Production:
First thing first, let just put it out there that this is consider a financially “poor” drama. From what I heard, the cost to produce this drama was relatively low. That becomes apparent throughout the show with bad camera lightening and poorly done fight scenes. If you are coming into this drama expecting perfection, then I would say to not even give it a try. With that being said, I do believe that if the funding for this drama was higher and that it was better constructed, it could potentially be THE drama that goes down in history of C-drama.

Story:
I came to the conclusion that this drama isn’t aiming to tell an amazingly unique story or to test the intelligence of the viewer by any means. It is a typical wuxia, but instead of focusing on the story, it focuses primarily on its characters and how each event that occurred affects the characters and how they grow as the story progresses. The show seem to have a very clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses and doesn’t try to be something that it’s not.

Characters/Actors:
Now, the gem of The Untamed is hand down it’s incredible group of characters. At first glance, the characters might just be your basic everyday wuxia characters that you can find in almost any novel. The amazing part of this show is that the characters are put into these situations that truthy determine who they are as a person base on the decision they make. While you may not agree with every one of their actions, at the end of the day you can still come to sympathize with them. Seriously, this show even explained to you the reasons why characters I believe to be “NPCs” behaved such a way they did. An unexpected life-lesson this drama has taught me.

Wei Wuxian, our protagonist yet the “villain” of the story, come off as those happy-going, carefree kind of character while Lan Wangj is the silent, stoic type that must only wear white. At least that is how it is expected to be, but no, they are definitely much more than that. I generally favor character like Wei Wuxian but they can potentially hit the danger zone of being too annoying or foolish. Wei Wuxian not only have the perfect balance of that character but also have that slight hit of innocence that make him so relatable and so humane yet is hated by the world. You see these scenarios all the time, but in The Untamed and the world that it has created it become convincing that such things happened the way it did. Xiao Zhan portrayal of Wei Wuxian is so on point that with even the tiniest facial movement you can see the life and fresh of the character. After this, I honestly cannot see another Wei Wuxian beside him.

For such a young age, Yibo did exceptionally well in his role as Lan Wangji. You can see the pain and longing he has every time he looks at Wei Wuxian. Romantic feeling or not, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are truly soulmate, and Xiao Zhan and Yibo are the perfect match with each other.

Conclusion:
Lastly, this drama isn’t for everyone; if there ever exist such a thing. Unlike a lot of people, I didn’t watch this drama because of the BL. And I believe that it is a lot more than just that. I grow and learn with the characters, and a part of me definitely has changed from this experience. Not just the two main leads, but all the side characters are so great that they deserve to be leads of their own show. 50 episodes might be enough to tell the story of The Untamed but give me another 10 episodes of our favorite gang just staring at each other with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji not-so-subtle flirting and I wouldn’t even complain. If you’re still not convince, here’s more text for you to read (Note: the article isn’t written by me). https://www.soompi.com/article/1347833wpp/8-reasons-to-watch-c-drama-the-untamed-a-study-in-how-to-rip-your-heart-to-shreds-and-mend-it-again

I had this title on my PTW list but with the thought of watching it sometime later. After a recommendation I went to watch the first episode. The first episode was followed by the next ones and after a couple of them I liked this so much that I couldn't stop. I just finished this drama so all my feelings are fresh and maybe still subjective therefore. I haven't watched any other adaption and didn't read the novel (yet) so this was my first time "meeting" Wei Wuxian, Lan Zhan and the others.

First of all, this is my 7th watched C-Drama and I have already seen really good and average ones. The Untamed gave me the same good vibes I got while watching Guardian (2018) before (first favorite C-drama of mine). I agree it's not everyone's cup of tea but if you enjoy historical, fantasy with some horror elements and Xianxia dramas you should give it a try.

As for the story I really liked it. Maybe it's because I didn't know anything about the setting but the first episode was a bit confusing for me at first. The drama starts with the male lead character's present and then jumps back in time for 16 years in episode 2. More than the half of the drama is spent on telling the back-story which might sound like a lot but I found it well balanced and the pacing absolutely fitting. There wasn't one episode that didn't entertain me so a thumbs up from me. The story is interesting and I liked the mix of action, sad and funny scenes. It sent me on a rollercoaster of feelings and I had my moments when the scenes were so touching that I shed tears (which I rarely do while watching something and only when it manages to totally capture me). The story comes to a (in my opinion satisfying) closure.

Which leads me to the cast. I'm a sucker for a good cast and characters with depth and development. All of that you'll find in The Untamed. The acting was on point and supporting characters had their fair share of screen time and didn't turn into colorless props like I've seen in other dramas. Xiao Zhan and Wang Yi Bo made it straight to my favorites list among some others and I'm looking forward to see them in other dramas. I haven't seen any of them before and can't compare their previous works but think that every one did a great and absolutely convincing job here. Without downgrading the others, Xiao Zhan's facial expressions were such a joy.

The soundtrack is totally to my liking. It has many great instrumentals and of course the character songs as well as the opening and ending tunes. It's a pleasure to listen to on its own and I do so often.

For me it's already sure that I will rewatch this drama. I liked it from the beginning to the end and can't believe I finished it so fast. I kept being curious as how it would go on and always looked forward to the next episode.

Overall I can only recommend to give this drama a try if you're curious. I fell pretty fast in love with it and don't regret anything. It's really a gem.

I've never read the book or watched the anime (but I've heard a LOT about them). The MCs are hilarious and amazing (though YiBo's acting is questionable at first) and they are incredibly engaging characters. A lot of TV shows and dramas have such boring and flat characters that have no real dimension to them, yet all the characters in this show have an amazing level of roundness.
The plot is amazing- there are so many twists and turns. The character designs make you expect certain things of certain characters but they pull a full 180 on you- which makes the show even more engaging because of these twists. Most TV show plot twists aren't the most realistic and don't fit the original character design, but with this show, they make so much sense and they're foreshadowed so far ahead! Bravo to the OG writer of the book and the scriptwriters for this show!
The acting was questionable with some characters, but Sean Xiao (Wei Wu Xian), the actor for Wen Ning, the actor for Ze Wu Jun- were amazing! So many others but I can't list them all (and I don't remember actor names, so I'm so sorry about that). However, a few were questionable (Wang YiBo at first and Jiang Cheng's actor), but overall, it was full of great acting and engaging storytelling.
Speaking of storytelling, the director(s) was/were amazing. I'm not a cinematography student or anything, but the shots in this TV show were phenomenal. They gave us the warm, the cold, the happy and the sad, all delivered in an unhurried and engaging manner. I watched this entire show because of one shot (episode 25, arrows ;) ) but I fell in love with the way the story was told.
The OST and original music was amazing as well. The OST was sung by Sean Xiao and Wang YiBo and it's AMAZING in my opinion. For any Chinese speaker, the poetry is amazing. I think its incredibly beautiful and meaningful.
Overall, definitely recommend watching and definitely will rewatch.

I could write hours about this drama, but let me say it short: Don't miss this one!!

BEAUUUUTIFUL IN EVERY WAY!!!

This drama tore my heart apart, stiched it together , just to rip it out in pain again - still, I enjoyes every second of this pleasure.
The story development is a MASTERPEICE!
All actors do a marvellous job in portraing the characters.
The main cast could not have been choosen any better.
The cast, the scenerey, the ML chemestry - everything just blindening beautiful.
The only thing one could wish for more, would be more distinct BL scenes, but the ambigious, subtle and graceful way of portrayal are just as blissful to the soul.

If you back off from this drama because of the rumor LGBT/BL, please read this review

I am novel fans. I thought so many times before I harden myself to watch this live action adaption (I mean, I was disappointed a few times before with live action (not Chinese live action 'tho)).
The result? I am EXTREMELY SATISFIED. Thank you so much for making one of my favorite novels this beautiful live action!
As for the rumor LGBT genre... Well, although the novel this drama based on is indeed BL, the drama itself is not. Unless you have a rotten mind, like fudanshi and fujoshi (I don't mean insult. I, myslef, am a fujoshi). Why am I so sure? There aren't even any romantic hug! At most, it's a very very beautiful friendship/brotherhood.
As for the disappointed fujoshi/fudanshi... NOPE. I am not disappointed.
Plus, the plot itself is a number one selling point for this novel/drama (not the romance). Second, it's the characters.

THIS DRAMA IS TRULY A MASTERPIECE ♡

Don't know where to start talking about this drama. To be honest at first I didn't want to watch this drama because it was a BL, and I was not so impressed with that. But my friend who was suggested me this drama, kept urging me again and again to watch this. So that's why I started to watching. But in the end I can't even imagine what happened to me, look at the poor me writing paragraphs about this drama like a stupid ಥ‿ಥ.

There are no words to express how much I love this drama. This drama was a complete journey of emotions for me. Everything about THE UNTAMED is indeed beautiful ♡. It was such a emotional roller-coaster, it breaked my heart again and again and I cried a lot like it was all happened to me ಥ_ಥ. It's so hard for me to explain the feelings this drama gave me, like one time I cried a lot, one time I laughed, one time it filled me with love and one time I was angry and just wanted the villain to vanish and let everyone be happy..it's just truly indescribable..throughout the drama various emotions have flooded me. This is truly the best drama I have ever seen in my entire life, I promise !!!

The two lead roles, Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi, made me feel so many emotions that I never knew was possible. Their story made me realize that love can be found in many different forms, and it's also change my view for many things I believed till then.

When it comes to my favourite character, yeah of course he is Wei Ying my love (Wei WuXian) ♡. I think he is too good for this world, he always think about others rather than his own self, which sometimes makes me angry like why can't you think about yourself at first ಠ︵ಠ. Never have I ever loved a fictional character this much and I don't have enough words to express my love for him ♡.

You know, I get over things very fast when I watch something. But this one is the first thing in my entire life that still binds me with it. It's almost been a year since I've known this beautiful art..but I still can't move on from this. THE UNTAMED will always have a special place deep in my heart ♡.

This drama is truly a masterpiece !

The casting was absolutely PERFECT, everyone fitted their roles extremely well and I couldn't imagine Wei WuXian & Lan WangJi as anybody else. Everyone did an amazing job !

Just wanted to tell you that don't you let the "BL" stop you from watching this AMAZING drama, like if you are thinking oh I don't like BL (like me at first). Let me tell you, this drama is way way way more than that. How AMAZING this drama is truly indescribable..You must definitely need to watch this to know what I mean ♡.

This is a masterpiece!!!!

A True Masterpiece!

There’s only one word to describe this drama: masterpiece.
I’ve already watched it three times—and finished the entire series in just three days. That’s how captivating it was.

From the storyline to the production, OST, acting, and visuals, everything was simply top-tier. If I were to rate each element, it would be a solid 10/10 across the board.

The original soundtrack was breathtaking—it fit the emotions and atmosphere of the drama perfectly. The singers deserve just as much praise; their voices brought the story to life in such a powerful way.

The storyline was flawless. It explored themes like friendship, hatred, injustice, betrayal, and so much more. There were so many unexpected twists that genuinely surprised me. I also appreciated the light-hearted, humorous moments sprinkled throughout—they balanced out the heavy scenes and kept the pacing just right.

As for the acting, the entire cast was phenomenal. They made me feel like I was living every scene alongside them. I especially loved how each character had a unique personality, which made the story richer and more realistic.

The production quality was exceptional. You could tell the team put an incredible amount of work into it. The visual effects were beautifully done—no overuse of CGI, just the right amount to enhance the experience. Every detail felt polished and cinematic.

I do have one small wish, though:
In the final episode, especially that last scene—I really hoped to see more of Lan Zhan and Wei Wu Xian after their reunion. Instead of just Lan Zhan’s voice and Wei Wu Xian’s smile, I wanted to see their expressions, how they looked at each other, how they felt. That moment could’ve been even more powerful with just a few more seconds.

Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan absolutely delivered. Their chemistry was undeniable—both on-screen and off-screen—and they brought their characters to life in such a deep, memorable way.

I truly hope we get to see them work together again in the future. Even after everything that happened with Xiao Zhan's fanbase, I still hold onto hope that time will heal things, and they’ll be able to reunite in a new project someday. They deserve to shine—together.

Wishing both of them the very best in their careers. Their talent is rare, and their bond is even rarer.

The untamed ?

all time my favorite drama... 😘😘 spi Xiao zhan review Credit @Ai-chan
Story - For those who love the novel and dissapointed because there's no BL in this, DON'T WORRY!! The bromance is wonderful and will make you can't stop smiling. The story is rather faithful to the novel (not exactly the same tho).. they adapted many sweet scenes of LWJ and WWX.. (Trust me, they adapted almost everything except the confession scene and steamy scenes). For the additional plots, I don't have any problem with them.. it doesn't really change anything (maybe only more screentimes for minor characters like Wen Qing and Jiang Yanli).. And I think they add a new character, Xue Chonghai, to smooth the story.. It was a big question in the novel HOW DID WWX LEARN DEMON CULTIVATION? And the story about Xue Chonghai is to answer the question..

This drama really has exceed everyone's expectations.. like, at first, in China, many the original novel fans can't accept the show (because there's no BL or Xiao Zhan & Wang Yibo don't have WWX & LWJ's charm, etc) and so The Untamed only got a low rating (4.8 in douban) but it keeps on increasing after the show airing.. now it has reached 8.0!! I think it proves the beauty of this show..

Acting/Cast - Both Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo did a great job in this drama!! At first, I though Xiao Zhan wouldn't suit WWX since he doesn't look like someone who talks a lot.. but I WAS WRONG.. WWX IS MADE FOR XIAO ZHAN!! And for Wang Yibo.. there're not many expressions shown by Lan Wangji here.. but I think Wang Yibo did a great job showing a cool but caring Lan Wangji~ >< The other supporting actors are new but really did a great job.. especially Yu Bin who played our little angel, Wen Ning~ like when he was stabbed, I can feel his pain too ugh.. ToT

Music - This drama has a set of beautiful songs.. the ending song, Wu Ji, sung by Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo and Yi Nan Ping are my favs.. Yi Nan Ping is a theme song for A Xian, A Cheng, and A Li.. the lyrics is so heartwrenching (I almost cried when the song was played).. and there are character songs too.. like Bu Wang sung by Wang Yibo for Lan Wangji's character song, Qu Jin Chen Qing by Xiao Zhan for Wei Wuxian's, Chi Zi by Yu Bin for Wen Ning's, Bu You by Liu Haikuan for Lan Xichen's, etc.. all of them have beautiful lyrics that tell the story of each characters.. MY EARS ARE BLESSED!!

Rewatch Value - DEFINITELY!! I can rewatch this wonderful drama again and again..

Overall - A must watch drama!! There is a complete set of genre inside.. comedy, mystery, friendship, family, romance..

A true masterpiece that takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions!

The Untamed is hands down one of the best c-dramas I’ve ever watched. I even read Mo Dao Zu Shi while watching, and honestly, I think the drama surpasses the novel in every possible way.

It’s hard to put into words what makes this show so special; you really just have to experience it. The characters are layered and compelling, and the story takes you on an emotional rollercoaster across all 50 episodes. What really sets The Untamed apart is the incredible world-building and character development. Every character, whether hero or villain, is given depth and respect, and the world they live in is anything but black and white.

Xiao Zhan as Wei Wuxian is phenomenal. His performance is so nuanced, and you can just feel every emotion he poured into the character. His chemistry with Wang Yibo is also amazing, but this isn’t just a typical BL drama, but a story about devotion, family, and sacrifice. It follows a group of young people on a journey that changes their lives forever, and it hits hard.

If you haven’t watched The Untamed yet, do yourself a favor and start now. I wish I could erase my memory just to relive it all over again with that same sense of wonder and excitement.

Today I finished watching this drama. I decided to watch this to find why this series have so many fans and I became a fan myself. The drama has an amazing story and the acting is exceptional. I literally fell in love with both the actors. I have always been a fan of BL. Even if this drama does not have anything similar to a typical BL, the bromance of the main leads is incredible. And the music, wow!! It is extraordinary. While listening to the music I can actually understand the feelings of the characters. Anyways, It was a good decision watching this drama. I highly recommend this show for those who are interested in bromance or historical dramas.

MASTERPIECE !!

This show is SO GOOD. The first few episodes are a bit confusing and slow but it quickly picks up and hooks you in. The acting in this show is incredible, especially the 2 main characters. Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan did an amazing job portraying the chemistry between their characters despite the censorship. Xiao Zhan's acting literally gave me chills in numerous scenes. I love how every character has a story, even the villains. I non-stop binged this show over the span of a few days because of how good it is. Currently rewatching it as I am now way too attached to this show and will be ordering the book series.
