If the plot makes your eyes occasionally roll so hard they hear the clang in the next valley, watch it for the acting. The two leads are terrific. All the more amazing since apparently this is their first such role. But they are excellent al the way through. Lan Wang Ji is a dancer in real life, and it shows in all his movements, especially in his fight scenes.
The climax is one of the most lugubrious I've ever seen, as everyone stands around for extremely long teary speeches, with occasional sudden stabs so they can bleed, then yet more talking. But the story was not written for plot, it was written for BL, and in that it served its purpose very well.

I found my all-time favorite Chinese drama. OK... It stands on the second or third place among Chinese dramas, but the others top it for different reasons.
'The untamed' has an amazing plot. I like every bit of it. The storyline is so well thought out, what is mistery is that for a reason. And everything has a logical or philosophical reason. You can think it through and figure it out.
Totally badass cast. Like, attractive. Over the top. Ok, you know when you want to decide if the drama is ok to watch...? When the plot is okay, but not too inviting, and the acting is okay, but not the best and you have an inclining that maybe this isn't your drama... Well, this would be my drama to watch even if the storyline would suck and the acting would be really bad. Because the actors are freaking attractive. That's what I mean :D
I think here is one of the best acting I've ever witnessed in Chinese dramas. The emotional turmoil they attempt to show is paying off big time. There are great Chinese actors, who act awesome, no doubt about it. But as acting in a collective state of mind, I like this almost as much as I do my top favorite dramas. They not only act well together, but the actors leave you with a feeling that if one of them was missing, everyone else would do as well and no hole is to be felt... Usually, when I watch a drama I feel like.. if that particular actor would leave the set, then the others would not be enough to fill the script, to play it out... And if I take the main actors as a whole, this cast does not make me feel that way.
And the 'bromance' part of the story.
The two main characters, I think I will want to write them a fanfic.. not gay-themed... They have such amazing chemistry... I want to act on that... The thing what pulled me to this drama was the eyes. The two actors eyes on the poster. Not the plot description, not how handsome they were, nothing of sorts. The eyes. They have amazingly intense eyes. I think I will probably move them very up in my Chinese actors list.. maybe 3-4th place...? So the bromance I felt from their gaze. It feels mesmerizing, and fond and kind, and worried and hopeful and pleading... like everything all at the same time. I would probably be the best person in the world if I had this kind of friend beside me.
Forgive my emotional review. I can't make it shorter and everyone has a right not to read this. I just wanted to share my emotions of this drama with more people, than there are in this cafe, I just finished 26th ep in. As I'm sitting here I have to hold my mouth shut forcefully to not scream or laugh or cry... Well, I did cry already... but it's acceptable when you shed a few tears in public, but they will probably freak when I laugh out loud right now or thrill a loud shriek :D My mind is bubbly.. And I'm glad there is this place like this awesome page like 'Mydramalist' where I can enter this kind of reviews too :)
Hope many of you share my sentiment.

To understand the main leads
It's a beautiful chemistry between the main leads. Space, respect and trust from both ends. It's totally addictive. By the time you end you will re-watch a minimum of 3times.its that great. It's has beautiful music. Because of dubing you might sometime fine it different with lip movement but you will surely forgive them as you will be in love with the series. Enjoy it. It's worth your time and read the novel. It's more detail. You will get to know a lot of physical activities which can't be shown in the series due to all the Chinese television shows in China as its a romance novel.

This is the first Chinese show that I've seen that I would rewatch with pleasure. I loved all the characters 'good' and 'bad' and I enjoyed being able to relate to different characters. The sets and costumes were exquisite, and the soundtracks to this series have become one of my favourites.
The cast for this show was perfect and the emotions and chemistry that they poured into this show was really felt through the screen.
When I finished the last episode, I was crushed that it was all over so soon, but there is so much content in this fandom which I am very grateful for.
Overall, I would 100% recommend this show. You won't regret it!

BEST INTRODUCTION SHOW !!!
This show was my own introduction to the wonderful and amazing world of Asian Dramas and I am so very thankful for it. The story was wonderfully written, with just enough twists and turns to make it more interesting every time I re-watch it. The characters were not only beautifully written, but also beautifully acted and it was very easy to fall in love with all of the good guys/girls, and I even managed to fall for one of the "bad guys". The costumes were stunning to see, as were the hairstyles. I'm actually trying to grow my hair long enough to try styling it like those in the show. The music was beautiful to listen to, eyes open or closed it always brought me to tears. My only negative was the ending, it's not a bad ending so don't worry about that, but I do wish it was a little bit more closed then it is.Overall, I recommend this show to everyone, be they new to the scene or seniors, this is a wonderful show to watch over and over again as each time you'll see something new.

SUPER
I watched this before reading the actual novel and I'm glad I did because the novel is filled with imageries and it's hard to imagine those and many terms. This drama will always be special because it's my first time completely watching a historical and a fantasy drama. It's also my first time watching Wang Yibo act (He's very popular). The scene where he allowed WWX to leave/escape and he shed a tear will always be heartbreaking. There were several differences in the drama and in the novel (esp the love scenes) but most were the same or similar. It's refreshing to see same dialogs in the novel and in the drama because in most cases, adaptations undergo revisions.
The ending of this drama is way different from the novel. In this ending, it's not appropriate considering the hardship LWJ faced for WWX. He waited for 16 years for WWX to return and he didn't even know if he'd return at all, still he waited and at the end, he'll part ways with him? They could've made a different ending and still be censored. SPOILER FOR THE NOVEL... They did not part ways at all.
Anyway, the acting of everyone is really commendable. Xiao Zhan really nailed WWX, he's almost like a Yandere with the way he smirks. Zhu Zanjin nailed the villain role too.
It's a 50 ep drama, I was almost hesitant to watch since it's so long but every ep is relevant. There's also a special edition which is 20 ep long.

Other than that, the story was SO good and all the characters are amazing and well developed, you actually end up feeling for the villains. The OST is great and I've been listening to it for the past week, also because basically every actor sings and I think that’s great. Talking about the actors, they were pretty good in my humble opinion, for example Wang Yibo who plays LWJ conveys so many emotions through his eyes and I cry any time he is on screen. Also the places are super pretty and everything looks great and that’s a plus.

BEST DECISION EVER
This is my first time writing a review from all of the asian dramas I’ve watched (mostly BL). I’ve encountered “The Untamed” many times by searching on Google what BL series/movies to watch and it always had a disclaimer on it that says it is not a BL. Which kept me wondering why it is part of the list but it’s not a BL at all. Intriguing! Plus, it’s high rated. I did my research and found a review that said, “I’m not stupid not to feel their love towards each other”. That’s when I started to give it a try. Fast forward to today that I finished the series, I feel like I’m still in a trance. I just can’t believe that they were able to showcase so many things. The talent! The culture! Everything! But here’s what I really love with “The Untamed”. From what I’ve read, the novel has steamy scenes which the series don’t have due to censorship. They were really careful in telling the story and not jeopardize anyone that’s involved. The story, particularly with the relationship of Wei Ying and Lan Zhan, can be seen in different perspectives. But really, it’s up to you. For me, as someone who loves to watch BL series, I must say that they were able to give justice to the missing element of BL in series from the novel. You could really tell how much they love and value each other just through their body language and eye contact. Anyways, I’m about to rewatch it just in case I missed something! You guys don’t hesitate to watch it, just go for it! No regrets! Was this review helpful to you?
pls i love this
Story:First off, the MDZS story, it's amazing and creative, all my love goes to MXTX for writing this masterpiece. Every character is so round and dynamic (even the stinky wens). After listening to the audio-drama, watching MDZS animations, and reading some really tear-jerking comments, I can say that I never will move on from this beautiful story. The only con was that it was confusing in the beginning, I definitely recommend reading the novel first. Since the official English translation is coming out soon, all fan translations have been deleted :')
Acting:
Ugh absolutely amazing. Xiao Zhan does wonderful with his expressions and Lan Wangji's love for Wei Wuxian is so obvious in Wang Yibo's eyes. Jiang Cheng is perfect too, he matches the physical appearance perfectly, and tho his crying may be awkward to watch, you can see that its absolutely heartfelt. Jiang Yanli, my girl, was perfect for this role( except for the fact that Jiang Yanli is only supposed to be above average pretty>:( I also really hated all the villains; Wang Lingjiao, Wen Chao, Wen Ruohan ,etc. which means the actors did a fantastic job! I could go on and on about each character, but all I can say is that the casting for Jingling and Jin GuangYao is genius, and the Nie bros actually look really, really similar, to the point its scary ( if you shave off Nie Mingjue's beard). Wen Ning was an absolutely adorable cinnamon roll too :)
Music:
Amazing. That is all I can say. WangXian is one of my favorite songs to croak on the car with my friends, and I love how it has something to do with the story. The people who came up with the lyrics should get a reward, all of them were so heart-breaking to read. My favorites are WangXian, Yi Nan Ping (Shi-Jie's song), Qu Jin Cheng Qing (Wwx's song), and I also really like the lyrics to Jiang Cheng's song.
Re-watch Value:
I really can't move on from this drama. Everything is really perfect, it gives you something more than all the other C-dramas. I still watch clips and my Instagram feed is pretty much all MDZS stuff.
Overall:
This is amazing. The actors, OSTs, story, its all incredible. DON'T WATCH IF YOU HAVE A HARD TIME GETTING OVER DRAMAS. Its just that good. The Untamed people had a low budget, yet they still made a prodigy. The only thing I would change about this drama is how WeiWuxian's appearance didn't change at all. Like, I know they have to keep the same actor, but he pretty much wore the same clothes, while he was being a Yunmeng disciple, YiLing LaoZu, and Mo Xuan Yu. In the animations that I watched, there was a drastic change between each, and Xiao Zhan just wore the same type of clothes each time. But everything else made up for it, and I definitely recommend watching the animations on Youtube, there's some really sad and creative ones.
