A Complete Drama

Story ~ This drama may not be a bl contrary to the novel it is from but the chemistry between Wei Ying and Lan Zhan is honestly very heart warming and beautiful.
The story is really well, I watched it when it came out while the rating were really low from fans of the novel but watching this show really is a good decision. The number of episodes seem like a lot but it is needed, the plot can be complex to understand and it helps settings backgrounds and introducing the characters well. This show will take you on an adventure between action, battles with powers with friendships and love.
-> The storyline is well-paced, exciting and balanced, setting a solid foundation for the show to build upon.

Acting ~ I really have to applause both Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo for their incredible acting. Zhan is bringing Wei Wuxian's joyful, playful and lively personality to life, he is easy to like and understand. Yibo had a more complex characters to play, Lan Zhan shows less emotion, and tougher personality but the way he succeed to convey with his eyes is amazing
I could talk about Yu Bin who played Wen Ning, who needed to act two personality, a very lovely and weak sweet boy but also a strong and though man who is loyal in both aspect.

Music ~As a musician I have to say, I deeply fell in love with Wuxian, this melody is beautiful and means so much for both Lan Zhan and Wei Ying

Rewatch Value ~ As I writing this, it is the end of December 2021. Years after the drama was released and when i first watched it. I have watched this drama so many times I have count; I really enjoyed the story, the characters and all the details and efforts the Directors put into this drama.

Overall is a 10/10 - this drama will touch you.

Story: The story of TU is enchanting. While you may not know what to expect in the beginning, after some episodes you just won't be able to stop watching because you are gonna want to know how it ends. The characters are well written and the story keeps you on the edge and takes you through comedic events, music-based fighting, sword fighting, teasing between siblings, cute interactions, dramatic show downs, tragic events...you get pretty much everything except for a break (except for the comedy). So do not expect this to be a light watch, it's not, but is it worth it? Definitely. As for the story lines, the only minus point I found was the long flashback as well as some ridiculous revelation scenes during the last third of the series. But in the end you all see it as a whole and just go along with it.

Cast/Acting: The cast did an amazing job. That is all I have to say about it. All of them were awesome and totally brought their characters to life. Even the little kid actor was great.

Music: Like I said, a lot of musical fighting. But it's nice music and the scenes are astonishingly well done and visually, they are a sight to be seen. I do admit that some musical pieces could have been used a little less over the course of the series and I would not have been sad.

Rewatch: to be honest, the comedy scenes sure. The drama...probably not.

Overall: The Untamed is a roller coaster trip through so many emotions your heart will have a hard time keeping up. When you watch it you just won't be able to stop since you get so into the characters, you start swearing at the villains and cheering for the heroes. The dramas does have a few rough edges but it fits so well together, the rough sides are not noticeable as much. I definitely recommend watching if you want to watch a fantasy, kinda (fictional) historical series. Also do not be intimidated by the 50 episodes. You will soon forget how many you watched because the story is so addicting.

MASTERPIECE

OMG where should I start? First of all if you haven't watched this drama then do it! BEST drama so far I've seen. The amazing cast, the intresting and amazing storyline, the visual effects, the OST and everything was just perfect.

(HEAVY SPOILERS!)
Started really intresting from Wei Wuxian's death and then jumping back to the past where everything started. Got to see both main leads background and how their friendship forged through the years. Their first meeting, then surviving life and death situations together and growing closer. I specialy loved Yan Li. She is adorable, and her care for Wei Wuxian is really precious. I felt so bad for her when she died :( I actually didn't had any thought about Jiang Cheng at the beginning but after Wei's reborn I hated him. He was so annyoing to his own "brother". Her mother was annyoing too when she appeared. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The story after the rebirth was intresting as well and never got boring. Let's talk about the ending. I shed tears when they parted ways :( but then we could "see" that they actually didn't left each other behind so I considert this as a happy ending :)

All together the best drama so far!

This is worth watching

The Untamed is a captivating Chinese drama that transcends typical genre expectations. With its stunning visuals, richly developed characters, and a compelling narrative, it offers a truly immersive viewing experience. The chemistry between the leads is undeniable, fueling the emotional core of the story. While the plot is intricate and unfolds gradually, it manages to maintain a consistent level of intrigue and keeps viewers thoroughly engaged. The blend of humor, action, and romance creates a dynamic and satisfying watch, one that stays with you long after the credits roll. Highly recommended for fans of fantasy, wuxia, and well-crafted storytelling.

Somehow Captivating

This review comes from a re-watch a couple of years after the first run. As with many of the newer historical dramas, it isn't without its common flaws. So why the higher score despite some shortcomings? Because it was fun to watch the first time and was still fun to watch the second time.

- Even if the acting is slightly cringe at times, the chemistry still manages to work and you'll still laugh out loud, then shed a few tears, and go back to laughing again. Xiao Zhan also does a good job in keeping the momentum going.
- Even if there are some plot holes and inconsistencies, the story and twists were well-paced and interesting enough to keep you wanting to get to the next episode even when it's already past midnight.
- Even if the action scenes are flimsy at times, it's too late to care because you're already drawn in to the plot.
- Even if the dramatizations can get a bit much as usual, it actually works well here for the comedy relief which balances out the grimmer undertones.

Despite having dropped other series for less, this one just manages to blend itself well. For a fairly long drama, it surprisingly had minimal draggy moments because the plot usually shifts when it threatens to reach that point. The underlying morals Asian films usually try to incorporate, is actually much more realistically done in this one. And although I don't agree with the romantic censorship, it works out well for me personally because romantic subtleties are usually much more meaningful.

Overall, it is a memorable one and it makes me think the novel must really be great.

I didn't know of any of the cast members prior to watching "The Untamed" but I stumbled upon some comments while I was watching "Ashes of Love" (drama I also loved and turned me into a Luo Yunxi fan) and I was like, why not, let me give it a try.

I decided to watch "The Untamed" during lockdown, probably like a lot of other people out there. I was still a bit confused by the time I finished watching it the first time as the story line seem like it was missing some bits of information, so I watch it again and the pieces start to fall into place. I read the novel and like magic, the whole picture became clear. Just so I didn't miss anything I also watch the "Mo Dao Zu Shi - Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, which I enjoyed as well.

Now I am in the same bottomless pit as so many others who got addicted, watching it on a continuous loop (watching alongside other shows). I even bought the DVDs straight from China, just in case one day it disappears from all media platforms. I got it so bad that I even sign up for Weibo (and I don't even speak Chinese/Mandarin) just so I can follow up and see if they decide at some point to make a second season, not to mention keep an eye on Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo new releases and media info as I became their fan too :) Fingers crossed for season 2!

I don't think there is a cure for this...Did anyone who watched it manage to get away from this really unhealthy obsession? I need professional help!!! Oh, and a really big supply of tissues, please!!! I think I will need to watch this until one day I won't be able to shed one tear! Would I be cured then?

On a more serious note, these dramas exposed me to a wonderful culture, gorgeous sceneries, decors and costumes, not to mention drop-dead gorgeous actors/actresses; made me fall in love with lots of songs, not just Xiao Zhan, Wang Yibo and Luo Yunxi songs, and my list of great actors and singers is expanding daily. And for those inquiring minds, I love actresses too - Li Qin, Yang Zi, Bai Lu, etc.

Even if it is just for the hype around this drama and it is not your regular cup of tea, give it a try then come back and leave a comment. I am curious to see how many non-believers would hop on my wagon ;)

Experience

So my experience was the best i loved it from the actors to the writing to the way it was portrayed this was my experience and I think everyone forgets that it is a after a BL romance novel but they also forget that in other country’s romance between men is forbidden so that’s why it’s a little confusing to some of others but they should also look more into the show as they legit got married like 5-6 times. Also the bunny and donkey kisses the bunny represents lan wangji and the donkey is Wei ying. And the ending is like the most satisfying to as you can clearly tell lan wangji went back for Wei ying and it’s such a happy ending compared to like half the couples who didn’t get one, so I would say this was one of my favorites. And it’s like my 15 time watching it

Addictive

I started this because of Wang Yibo – after watching his drama, Gank Your Heart. To be honest, I have tried this a few months ago, but stopped because I felt it looked too cheesy and I was super confused at the beginning scene. Then I read the synopsis, and felt that it has a boys love vibe (which I was not comfortable with)

However, I was motivated after finishing Gank Your Heart. It’s also one of the highest rated drama on MyDramalist, so I decided to get over my prejudice and watched this.

The first 2 episodes starts off in the present time, which makes it super confusing. It dives right into the climax of the story, without any introduction. The beginning of the tale starts in episode 3 and it all starts making sense – with flashbacks. After the flashbacks, I began rewatching the first 2 episodes to see what I’ve missed.

What I really like about this drama:
• Plot twists! I did not see some of it, and I have also anticipated some of it.
• Eye candy galore. I have never seen such a pretty cast. Guys/Girls/Villians
• Mysterious/addictive. There’s just something about this drama that I find very addictive.
• I love watching the interactions between Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian. When they fight together, it’s just totally in sync.
• Villain development. I can sort of understand the villain’s motivations. I did not want to but, there’s a bit of empathy towards the villains.

What I didn’t like about this drama:
• Even though I was not comfortable with the boys love drama – I felt the lack of it in this drama. There seems to be chunks missing from the drama. When/How did Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian become so close? I hardly seen any interactions. It seemed to go from A -> Z and all of a sudden they’re BFFs.
• The ending! Whattttttttttttttttt. Something’s missing because of the Chinese censorship
• Some CGI looked cheesy. Haha. The colour of blood was bright red and looked too fake. They could have made it more creepy if they darkened the blood colour and made the music creepier.

Acting: In the beginning episodes, I thought Xiao Zhan (Wei Wuxian) over acted a bit, but as the show progressed I thought he was really good. He plays a very happy guy. However, when Wei Wuxian gets angry - Xiao Zhan was perfectly scary. Wang Yibo was the stoic Lan Wangji, but I never felt he was wooden - I do not know how much is this attributed to Wang Yibo and how much is it is from the Voice Actor.

The voice actors were amazing. I didn't realize this was dubbed at all until I watched some BTS footage. Though... lol I should have because I've already seen Wang Yibo in another drama.

Now I’m probably going to read the novel… to see what the censorship covered. Haha.

best drama ever !!

i felt the need to write a review for this because it's an absolute masterpiece , i went into this drama with a mindset of disliking historical/costume dramas because i thought they were boring. little did i know after finishing this drama i started watching more and more costume dramas & even picked up history to learn more about ancient china. the untamed is such a great drama and i can assure you that you will definitely fall in love with the actors , the storyline is amazing , the OSTS are literally bomb and lets not forget their chemistry on set UGH im obsessed! i've never seen a better chemistry between actors , the costumes in this drama is phenomenal. you can never get bored of this drama! i watched it over and over again & i kept on watching the bts of it too~ i highly recommend this drama and trust me , you'll never regret watching it!

No story has stayed longer than Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's "Mo Dao Zu Shi" in my Heart

It's been six years since I've watched it, so recently, I've decided to give it a rewatch. Despite the *very* corny CGI and low production value (it gets better after the first three episodes), this story is one that has managed to make itself at home in my heart. Wei Wuxian will forever be a character that I really do love.

Anyhow, I think the greatest reason to watch "The Untamed" is its intricate storyline. Mo Xiang Tong Xiu and the screenwriters who adapted her work are really geniuses when it comes to characterization. There is not a single character I have forgotten from this drama over the past six years, and each—including the side characters— have their own unique challenges, motivations, and growth. I have never seen another drama with such consistent and alive characters, even when considering "Nirvana in Fire" and "Joy of Life." Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao, Lan Wangji— all of them are characters I relate to, hurt for, and love.

Each actor brings their character to life wonderfully too. Zhu Zanjin as Jin Guangyao is one of the most memorable performances from a lesser-known actor I have had the pleasure of watching in C-drama, and Xiao Zhan as Wei Wuxian is immaculate casting. I could tell the actors really loved this project and set, which is always wonderful : )

The stellar development of characters naturally indicates an intricate plot. "The Untamed" manages to cleverly sneak in so many often tragic themes and questions about our everyday lives despite the characters being from a fantastical world far from ours. Do we trust the individual or the group? What is really morality? How do we navigate the world around us and its people despite the obstacles?

I actually don't find the changes from the novel to be overly jarring for novel fans who are deciding whether to watch this. The themes and the essence of the characters are the same even if the romance is toned down (even so, I'd say the connotation is definitely present and it doesn't take a perspicacious eye to tell). More attention is given to the female characters which I think actually better develops why Jiang Yanli was so important to Wei Wuxian. I will say some changes in the semantics of cultivation/events do occur, and while they didn't bother me too much, it isn't completely authentic to the novel.

Given that, I don't have much more to say besides give it a try. I know it's censored and hard to find with good subtitles, but I've heard that Rakuten Viki has a decent translation : )
