let me preface this by saying that this is the only chinese drama i've ever watched. i only picked it up because i read the book and really enjoyed it, and i wasn't expecting too much because live action adaptations don't tend to measure up to the source material (yes, this is a generalisation and i know it's not always true)

the untamed, in terms of adaptation, is really, really good. it does change some plot elements from the book, but the story isn't compromised at all and i would argue that it's even better than the book in some points (e.g. jiang cheng's characterisation man i love that guy, as well as the roles of the female characters)
the cast was selected really well, especially jin guangyao and jin ling (i'm still not over how much they resemble each other like. what), and they all have great chemistry with each other
the soundtrack is also 10/10, i cry every time i hear shijie's theme and wuji/wangxian is beautiful

drawbacks are that the cgi and editing is kind of bad (though i'm told that's pretty much to be expected from c-drama?) - the first scene lowkey made me want to stop watching right then and there but i fell in love with xiao zhan (wei wuxian) pretty much immediately so i kept watching, which is one of the better decisions i've made in life. also props to wang yibo for his portrayal of lan wangji because communicating primarily with your eyes and microexpressions has got to be hard, but he did it so so well

when i rewatch i might skip or fast-forward through some of the less enjoyable episodes, but overall it was a really good experience and i'll definitely be rewatching! they did a really good job of adapting the novel and showing wwx and lwj's relationship without being explicitly romance

to the person who's reading this, if you have any recommendations for drama that don't have romance or romance isn't the main focus, drop them in the comments! preferably c-drama because i really need to improve my chinese lol

Blood, sweat, tears and c....

GOAT. Every other wuxia bromance will be inevitably compared to this masterpiece.
I have read the book, downloaded the soundtrack, started to learn Chinese and rewatched at least 3 times since it aired. This is the mythical Lilith, coming before Adam and Eve. This the blueprint set in stone. The story is heartbreaking, main leads are irreplaceable, the music whispers right into my soul, even the cringey cgi somehow glued it all together ...

Unforgettable Journey ?

This show completely captivated me from start to finish. I mean, 50 episodes in just 4 days?🤭
It's safe to say it became a part of my daily routine, and I never once got bored or lost interest. It absolutely deserves all the praise it gets💯

Sure, I was a bit confused by all the names and clan references at first, like with any Wuxia drama🤷 But once they delved into the flashbacks, everything clicked into place, and I was hooked.

The plot was just... wow. I can't even find the right words to describe how much I enjoyed every second of it😍
The cinematography, the epic battles, the gorgeous costumes – it was all top-notch. And the characters? Don't even get me started. I felt like I knew each and every one of them personally, thanks to the incredibly detailed storytelling.

And let's talk about the actors – every single one of them delivered outstanding performances that added so much depth to the story. From the seasoned veterans to the newcomers like Sizhui and Jin Ling, each one of them found a special place in my heart❤️

But all good things must come to an end, and sadly, The Untamed is no exception. I'll definitely miss Lan Zhan's stoic demeanor and Wei Wuxian's mischievousness. But hey, at least there's a Special Edition to look forward to!😌

Speaking of the end, I can't help but wish for a bit more closure. Like seeing Jiang Cheng and Wuxian finally making up, or Wei Wuxian taking on the role of the uncle. It would've been nice to see those loose ends tied up.

Oh, and can we talk about the flute music? I've always been obsessed with it in Wuxia dramas, but "Wuji" took it to a whole new level✨That tune is permanently stuck in my head now, and honestly, I'm not complaining😂

In short, The Untamed was an unforgettable journey that I'll cherish for a long time, and I'm so grateful to have experienced it🤍

The best❤️❤️❤️

Start to end I just cried, even the happy moments, saddest moments, y to explain the background song is enough ... So peeps ready with a bucket to cry a loads.
I just want to frame mls smile and hang it in my room, such a beautiful and calming smile.
One of the best drama I ever watched , even without any romance mls glare was enough ...more thn enough to make me blush like anything.
This was my first historical drama, I thought of give a try after reading the manga and that was the best decision I ever did. It is motivating me too watch more historical drama.
Even though I am not sure whether I will enjoy like this but yeah this one is going to haunt me like anything.
BEST HISTORICAL DRAMA❤️❤️❤️❤️

5th rewatch and I'm still here

Wei Wuxian's story deeply touched me. I really could feel his sacrifices, his love for the people around him, his regrets and remorse... When his sister died, I cried a lot. He blamed himself so much to the point he could see nothing but red. Also the leads relationship is just unforgettable, I love WangXian so much!! The way Lan Wangji went from a stoic, young boy who is unable to express his love for his Wei Ying and just wants him to stay by his side and on the "right" path to a grown, mature man who lived by his dead love's memory -- to always be there where the chaos is, and also became someone to stand by Wei Ying, making up all the regrets he had during Wei Ying's past life. The casting for this drama is also perfect and the acting also delivered. (Can I also just say Xiao Zhan is so handsome?!?!?!)

Although there are flaws both in the storytelling and directing, the way the story was delivered overshadowed these flaws. This drama is one of a kind and I will hold this close to my heart forever.

A Never-To-Be-Missed Piece...!

The dictionary is in lack of words to express my love for the amazing main leads, great actors even the villains, wonderful soundtracks, breathtaking sceneries and everything else rom A to Z showed in this masterpiece is just not possible to be expressed enough.

Actually, I first just ignored the constantly growing popularity of TU for a very long time. A that time I had just newly arrived in the Asian Drama World. But then, I grew fond of Wang Yibo after watching Legend of Fei (when it was aired in Dec 2020). I soon found out that his most amazing drama was the one I was overlooking since a long time...

I immediately started The Untamed. At first it really seemed hard to get through the seemingly boring starting episodes, but I stuck to it for the promising reviews I had collected, and just gave it a chance to prove them. But believe me, when the real story begins (and that comes sooner than expected), I found myself just addicted to it.
I have watched nearly 200 dramas and movies by now, but have yet to find a drama worthy to be called on par with The Untamed... You know, right now, I just want to get amnesia and watch this drama all over again...! Everytime I can't find a good drama, I just return to TU and it feels like I'm back home...

The way the story is adapted and shown is really wonderful... Those plot twists arrive just when required... The CGI effects are also very lifelike... Those eye-tearing scenes with the sad osts in background really make you cry, and trust me, I don't cry easily... The funny scenes leave you rolling on the bed... The suspense scenes make you forget to even breath... The fight scenes have you repeat them again and again to enjoy the wonderful fights...

You just want to be there in the series, console the main leads when they are heartbroken... Your hands keep itching to just go and give a hard slap to the villains... You just want to go in the screen and shout at the stupid ones who wrong the innocents...

The fact that Wang Yibo really is the only one who could carry out LWJ's role perfectly as required is just amazing. Xiao Zhan too is like the only one able to show cute naughty smiles in really hard and serious times...

The way Wei Ying shows his despairing emotions, laughing when crying, it is just perfect... His cute and naughty moments, his creative but kinda infuriating ideas, his mature moments when he stands up to fight... His babysitting the children, or should I say him being babysitted by the younger ones.... And don't forget that 'Lan Zhan' call after every 2 minutes...

The way Lan Wang Ji upholds his image even in troubled times... Always concerned about his friend... Standing by his side when he needed it the most... Finding the true direction in the chaos... The hard to ignore 'Wu Liao'... And when he gets drunk, those funny moments... An amazing Hanguang Jun...!

WANMEI....!

I never thought....in my years of using MDL that I would actually sit down and write a review but this drama made me experience so many things and go on this rollercoaster of emotions that I just need to write a review!! (sorry in advance if my review is all over the place, this is my first one > < )

Before I begin, I just want to give a disclaimer that while going into this drama I hadn't read the novel nor watched the Dong Hua like many other fans so this is purely based off of the drama as I had nothing to compare since I was unfamiliar with the story!

Story Plot/Pacing: The storyline was so well executed considering how complex and layered the plot really is that I really have to applaud it. For many people the beginning is confusing and slow paced, but for me personally, I never found it slow or boring. It might be the fact that this is not the first drama I’ve watched that throws you into the middle and then back tracks to explain the story. Im also just a sucker for all the cuteeee scenes when they were in school, my UWUSSSSS just gushed out LOL. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASEE!!! if you are confused by the first 1-2 episodes PLEASE HOLD ON and continue watching it gets sooo much better you will not regret it! The story picks up pretty quickly and its an exciting journey, one that will really just play with all your emotions! You will cry, you will scream, you will smile soo uncontrollably, so beee prepared^^

Considering this drama being 50 episodes I went in originally questioning how it was going to play out because many other dramas I have previously watched (mostly kdramas) start off well and then just become so boring orrr dragging where I wanna pull out my hair and those are only 16 episodes….so I couldn't even imagine 50…But this drama, I was completely wrong!! The pacing was so well done, I never felt it dragging or rushed. I was hooked right from the start and I couldn't stop watching. My only critique to be honest…after watching the 50 episodes and this series multiple times i wish it was longer LOL. Like 70 episodes could've been fantastic and I think…that would've given it some room to further flesh out some details of the storyline that could've made some areas more clear to the audience that have no prior knowledge to the storyline.

ACTING/CAST: Overall, I thought the casts performance were truly impressive given the fact that many of them are new and just starting off in their acting careers. With each character having very distinct personalities and qualities, they brought their characters to life to give us a truly remarkable performance!! You loved some characters with your whole heart and you've hated characters with a burning passion…and that to me shows how great their acting was in this drama. But namely I would like to mostly focus on the two main leads, Xiao Zhan as Wei Wuxian and Wang Yibo as Lan Wangji! I originally only knew of Yibo going into this drama and wanted to watch this to support him but little did I know…that as soon as Xiao Zhan came on screen I fell in love so hard with his character…the fact that he talked 90% of this drama (bless him…because that is alot of words to remember LOL) and was able to execute every emotion so perfectly and naturally through his body and facial expression was truly remarkable. I felt every emotion through him….when he ached….I was aching, when he was happy I was happy. To see his character change from this playful innocent teenage boy to a serious, vengeful, pained character was truly remarkable. And I will forever be a fan of his now and watch his future works!! Yibo as Lan Wangji, having the completely opposite scenario where he literally has no lines lol, was able to express his emotions so beautifully with just his facial expressions. Like many have said….just by watching his eyes you can see all the different emotions he felt throughout this drama, the feeling of mourning, longing….loving….etc….Truly beautiful, that alone is hard to achieve. They were both truly made for the roles of WWX & LWJ.

OST SOUNDTRACK: I cant even begin to talk about the OST. I LOVE THIS SOUNDTRACK SO MUCH, and I am still till this day listening to them on replay on my apple music. The soundtrack, with or without lyrics complimented the drama and storyline so well. The emotions you felt while watching the drama still linger while listening to these songs, even though most of them are not really played in the drama. Wuji will forever be that iconic song!!

REWATCH/RECOMMEND VALUE: As someone who has already watched it 3 times….and probably more time in the future, i think you know my answer already haha. YES YES YES 1000000% would rewatch this. Ive always been a little hesitant when dedicating my time to watch Chinese dramas specifically because Im not the biggest fan of historical/fantasy dramas and the amount of episodes ALWAYSSSS intimidated me….40+ episodes >< i never thought I could do it…especially since Kdramas with 16-20 episodes alot of times would drag on and bore me….but The Untamed really ignited my motivation to watch more Chinese dramas and I cant wait to watch more in the future!!

Till 2019 I didn't find anything better than "The Untamed"

Everything about this drama is on its peak. I cannot give credits just for one thing saying "Oh the direction was the best." That's why I said everything was the best. Acting , Directing, the story line...

I still can't get over of this drama, probably I watched it more than 30 times already, lost the count long ago.
I could literary give my life for it. ❤️

A timeless masterpiece! Every minute worth it!

I truly enjoyed every single moment of The Untamed. It’s like fine wine ,the more you get invested, the more you love it. The story unfolds in such a captivating way that you find yourself completely immersed in the world and its characters.

Every character feels real, with their own depth and complexity. The actors did an outstanding job bringing them to life, making you feel their struggles, joys, and heartbreaks. The settings and cinematography are breathtaking, and the attention to detail in costumes and atmosphere is remarkable.
The locations are absolutely breathtaking, from serene mountains and misty lakes to grand architectural sets.
The music deserves a special mention ,it’s absolutely top-notch, enhancing the emotional impact of every scene and making certain moments unforgettable.
I personally loved Lan Wangji a lot...his love for a person is truly amazing...
For me, The Untamed isn’t just a drama; it’s an experience. It’s one of those rare shows that stays with you long after the final episode. No matter how many dramas I watch, this will always be my all-time favorite.
It's a drama which I can never forget.

This is the best show ever!

I literally love this show its such an amazing show that deserves a round of applause! Like the emotion that the actors put into all the scenes were perfect wang yibo and xiao zhan captured the image of lan zhan and wei ying perfectly! Especially with the death scene of wei ying! I could feel the pain that lan zhan went through after he died! I will definently recommend this too people who really enjoy stories that don't have a lot of romance! You won't regret it! I really think that this is my favorite show ever and I will never regret saying that! I was kinda sad at first that they made this into a non bl but then i started watching it and it was actually really good!

"Emotional Depth and Unmatched Chemistry: The Untamed Review"

The Untamed is hands down one of the best dramas I’ve ever seen. The chemistry between the main characters and the performances of the actors bring the story to life in a way that completely pulls you in.

Lan Wangji (Lan Zhan) is truly a standout character. His expressions alone say more than words ever could. Despite his quiet nature, every subtle shift in his expression conveys his inner turmoil, love, and devotion. His silent affection is so powerful that you don't need a single word—his eyes and gestures communicate everything. The music, particularly the sound of the guqin, complements this so well. When Lan Zhan plays, the music feels like an extension of his emotions, and it adds such a beautiful, realistic layer to the character and his journey.

Then there’s Wei Wuxian, whose lively, mischievous personality perfectly contrasts Lan Zhan’s reserved intensity. Wei Wuxian brings so much energy and brightness to the story, always managing to find light in even the darkest of situations. His character is both heroic and tragic, making his journey of growth, friendship, and redemption incredibly compelling.

The dynamic between Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan is unlike anything else. It’s an unspoken understanding that grows stronger with each shared moment. Their bond is one of the most powerful elements of the drama, and it’s portrayed so authentically that it stays with you long after the final episode.

What makes The Untamed even more remarkable is how little it needs to rely on dialogue to tell its story. It’s all in the expressions, the glances, and the quiet moments between the characters. That’s where the beauty lies—this show speaks volumes without needing to say a word. It’s a must-watch for anyone who appreciates strong storytelling, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters.

I’ve watched this drama five times since I first saw it in 2023, and I’m still not bored of it. I apologize for the late review! If you're thinking of watching it in the future, know that The Untamed will leave a lasting mark on you. It’s a show that makes you feel, laugh, cry, and appreciate the intricacies of life and love. Whether you're drawn to fantasy, romance, or character-driven narratives, this drama will captivate you.

And let’s not forget the music—it truly enhances the entire experience. The guqin and the flute create such an emotional atmosphere that you feel like you're right there with the characters. The music doesn’t just support the scenes; it elevates them, making each moment more meaningful and real.

Even though there are 50 episodes, I always feel like it’s not enough. Every time I finish, I find myself wanting more. The Untamed is a drama that stays with you long after it ends, and I can’t get enough of it.
The Untamed ❤🤍🖤

The Untamed - Review

The Untamed was a cool series, with quite a bit of emphasise where good isnt always and bad isnt always bad, Its about 2 boys, the book says there gay, and i think the kiss in the book. but in the series, they dont really do anything, apart from be reallly good friends, until near the end when Wei Ying tells Nan Zhan that he like him. thats the part when i finally realise they might be gay - *gasp* - and i search the novel. I realise not everyone approves of gay so perhaps that is why they changed it.
