this is everything you could ask for
okay so imma just keep this short and say: its good, trust me.if ygs wanna read my whole review then go on but I warn you, I may hype this show out of proportion to the point that you might be disappointed if you watch this after reading it.
anyways, lets continue...
Seeing that I gave all 10s for my review, I would just like to say, I came in with no expectations, I saw it on Netflix and thought the photo, sypnosis, and preview looked real cool and interesting. I was blown out of my mind when I was hit with this masterpiece. I know it sounds like im hyping it up too much but like its THAT good, trust me.
The plot was just perfect, although confusing, it makes sense as it goes on and everything wraps up in the end so beautifully. There are time transitions, betrayal, death, love, parent issues, no parent issues, sibling love, AMAZING BANTER, and just perfect chemistry.
if im missing smth, just include it into my list above LOL
after finishing the show, you can say that I got what you call: post show depression. nothing would compare but I was still so addicted. I was sad that it ended. 50 episodes just wasn't enough for me.
you will fall in love with almost every character, if not you'll understand them.
the main characters had substance and a story, the side characters, the evil character, they had it ALL
I have to single the MLs out though bc they really made the characters their own. I couldn't imagine any other actors filling that role. the chemistry was EVERYTHING between the two. they say that actors change to fit their character, but Yibo and Lan Zhan made the character their own and intertwined their personalities to bring them to life.
At first I thought it was brotherly banter but going further in I REALIZED IT WAS ROMANCE . that was when I knew I stumbled upon a treasure chest. the romance wasn't in ur face but all the same, id like to say thats what made it all the much more sweeter and precious. I was GIDDY (damn I think im feeling a bubble of happiness just remembering the scenes LMAO). I didn't find out that this was based on a manga until after I finished the show (which btw im planning to read) but they say that the romance definitely is in ur face.
soundtrack was PERFECT. I have the theme song in all my favorite playlist.
there were scenes that were heartbreaking, heartwarming, heartwretching, heartfluttering, and heart confusing.
definitely rewatch worthy and definitely recommend worthy.
I've officially deemed them my comfort characters :D. I hope this helped and I also hope I didn't hype it up too much.

MASTERPIECE!!
I don't know from where to start as I say this is a true MASTERPIECE made by China. The story or plot is completely marvellous. It's been months but I haven't forgotten about this drama. Whenever I m free this drama revolves around me also when I m busy this story stills revolves around me. The actors are chosen perfectly for each and every character. The male leads are completely opposite and attractive. Sean xiao has done his role in the best way . He's been my favourite since then. Also Wang Yibo has played his cold and caring role in indeed best way. He is also my favourite since then. They both look truly compatible for each other. Only if it wasn't for Chinese drama we could have seen more level of bromance. But we can't say their attachment was lacking in anything , cause it also fulfills the audience curiosity and all.If you are here you must watch this. I love this drama.

Really Recommend
The story is somewhat like the manga (Mao Dao Zu Shi) , same actions except no romance which is okay but still considered as a bl. Just saying, half of the drama is the past, trust me you're gonna have to watch it cause the plot make more sense. They still added the WangXian scenes except censored and not really flirting. The acting was really nice, usually, when it came to the action it was exciting to see. I didn't hear the music much but it was nice. Theres not much of a rewatch chance since its 50 episodes but people usually just rewatch the WangXian scenes. Overall, I recommend it.Was this review helpful to you?
Like the best thing i've ever watched and this is on the tippy top of my drama history
Ok first of all, the cast. They are like the best looking cast I have ever seen. Most of them are under 30, and they all look like they're younger. I also love the story bc it's about mysteries, bromance, coming back to life, and like everything. The music- Wu Ji, it's been my favorite song since I watched The Untamed. By now, I probably already memorized 99% of the lyrics and I'm still learning how to play it on the piano. I rewatched this like over 10 times and made a bjyx fanpage on insta. (@bjyxforever) Everything is just perfect. Yeah I also cried like ten times but it was worth it.Was this review helpful to you?
WOW
That's all I can really say.....
when I heard of this show a year ago I didn't think I was gonna love it as much as I did. BL is one of my favorite genres to watch and when I heard about the censorship in China I was doubtful that the script writers could pull off the love story between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji but boy did they ever! I knew of the novel before hand, I haven't read it yet but I knew enough to know and be worried as to how much would be edited out. While yeah a lot of their romance was cut due to the producers/writers probably being worried about getting banned I still felt how much the characters loved each other thru some of the writing's sneakiness lol. There were certain scenes that felt like they were really pushing against the restrictions the censorship to show the bond between WWX and LWJ. But that wasn't all: which brings me to the acting. I'm gonna say that it feels like Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo were born to play these roles. They certainty brought their characters to life. Not only them but the rest of the cast was magnificent too. I appreciate the time that was given into casting these actors because I was not be disappointed with any of them. XZ and WYB were amazing like I said(can't praise them enough lol) with how much(or how little) they were allowed to show in respect to their romance they did an excellent job. I was completely sold on how much Wuxian and Wangji loved each other throughout the show despite it being shown thru subtext and chemistry. Truly it was all about their chemistry they knew how to sell that love even with them being restricted. I can't picture any other actors in these roles tbh. Even my brother who knew nothing of the romance between Wangji & Wuxian asked me if they were in love? lol. He feels it.
But that wasn't the only reason I loved The Untamed so much. This was my first foray into Wuxia/fantasy and I got to say i was completely emerged in the story, setting, plot, characters, costumes, world building from the get go! There was no episode where I wasn't entertained completely. Though the some of the effects could use more work I can't complain too much everything on this show is worth it. I'm so glad I decided to watch this because It's now my favorite Chinese drama. Just reviewing it makes me want to watch it again, and I probably will. This was definitely a treasure which I'll always rate 10/10! From the costumes to the music, acting etc theres nothing I hate. Even some of the vile villains I can't 100% hate. So if anyone still hasn't watched the Untamed what are you waiting for?

Still Longing
It has been a long journey. From the 50 lengthy episodes to the spinoffs and behind-the-scenes, it has been one hell of a journey. Even though, the production censored the gay parts, I would still give this series a 10 out of 10. Without the knowledge of this being adapt from a BL novel, I would still say that it is a masterpiece. It's beyond masterpiece. All the components of a good drama can be found in 'The Untamed' ,OSTs, Acting Skills, Visuals, Cinematography, Precise Audio Technicality. A huge kudos to the author of MDZS and all people that made it come to a reality. Even though it was ended without any much loose ends, I'm still waiting for another Season. It was indeed Lengthy yet I'm still Longing for another round. I hope to see more of Xue Yang and the background and story of the other characters and of course, how will Wei and Lan really ends up? This series is ver promising, I'll not get tired of it promoting this drama. For those who are looking forward to watch this adaptation, Rest Assured, This one will never fail you. Each episode is packed and stable. It's indeed impressive. Hope you enjoy it :)Was this review helpful to you?
If you can't get enough, I would recommend haunting archiveofourown.org for the fanfics on the series as well. There are some really good ones on Xueyang / Xiao Xing Chen if you are hoping for a happier alternative endings.
I hope China will keep on making live action movies & dramas out of some of their really amazing novels.

Cast: Truly good, both actors and voice actors.
Music: I don't even know how many times I have listened to the soundtrack album. (Which is actually sung by the cast)
Rewatch Value: I am not usually a person that rewatches tv-shows (especially ones that have so many episodes) but the Untamed just calms my heart every time I watch it .
If a perfect drama existed, this one would have been it for me.
it's been months since i have finished it and I'm still not over it.
Give it a try and you won't regret it.

An epic fantasy with deep meaning
It would not be an exaggeration to say this story has changed my life. The acting is exquisite and every actor does this story justice. This is a story of relationships on so many levels, and about life and both it’s beauty and cruelty. You get to watch a large cast age and grow together, and get way too invested in all the plot points and sub plots. The set design and costuming is amazing and the theme song now brings tears to my eyes. I love the story and magic of it but at the same time I’ve had to stop and think for a minute about the deeper means behind some of the scenes and how the wisdom can apply to my own life. Was this review helpful to you?

AND IF YOU'RE NOT GONNA WATCH IT IT'S UR LOSSWas this review helpful to you?
So now, let me get into this review.
A little background: I'd never watched any xianxia drama (not even historical ones) and since I know many chinese shows are like that, I stayed away from them, because I feared not understanding the plot and not connecting to the characters. Nonetheless, when I saw the drama was one of the top-rated of all time I decided to check its profile page here on mydramalist and the plot really attracted me. I had no idea it was adapted from a BL novel (I like bl dramas a lot!!). But then I saw one of the actors is Wang Yibo and I remembered that name. I found out he was actually a member from a group I really like (Uniq) and I got even more intrigued. After reading some of the reviews and comments and realising the two main leads were supposed to be a couple, I was hooked. Even though it's portrayed as a bromance, I don't mind it because I love close friendships too.
I watched the first episode and I was LOST. I didn't know what was going on, who was friends with who, what cultivation was, why everyone hated the cinamonroll that is wei wuxian. The names confused me too. I left some comments on this page lol they serve as proof.
But as the drama progressed, things were starting to get clearer and clearer. After episode 10 I was already fully immersed in the story and I lived each moment of each episode very intensely. I don't want to write spoilers in this review but the way they structured this show is so well made because we get to know the characters and their intentions very well before jumping back to the present time. It's different from the novel and I think it's a good different.
I'm not sure this is the best acting I've ever seen. Honestly, I would have very much preferred the actors could use their own voices because a big part of the actor's abilities lay on their voice. I think some actors overdid their acting and some of the movements were strangely executed, like JiangCheng. I also think the team should have payed more attention to the cinematography. Even if this wasn't a high budget drama they could have worked with the lightening and the framing a bit more. I think the lack of editing was more noticeable on the last episodes. I liked the sentimental part of the last five episodes but I couldn't understand why they were in that situation and didn't run away??? Anyways, I don't want to spoil so I won't talk too much about it but I did find it weird. Some camerawork and editing could be better.
Although technically the drama wasn't the best (probably due to its low budget, most probably), it was still beautiful. The actors are S T U N N I NG, each and every one of them. Like, I didn't even know where to look!! The main leads are sooooo charming, in different ways. Our mesmerising Lan Zhan (Wang Yibo) is sublime. His facial expressions and body language were so interesting to watch. Very very very talented. And then there's XiaoZhan as Wei Ying, who literally went through hell for being too good for his world. Their chemistry is mind-blowing. The smiles they give at each other, the intimate looks, the subtle touches. To me their relationship was very obvious and I'm actually thankful they did it this way; somehow, it worked better than any BL I've ever watched.
In my opinion, every side character was soooo interesting!! The villains were great, the goodies were great, the moodies too (JiangChen, I'm talking about you). Personally, my favorite villain was the last one (don't want to spoil anyone lol). I just really like the actor, he looks so cute like what???? And the character was the most interesting to me. XueYang was just cruel, in my opinion. But I'm reading the novel now so I'll probably understand the characters a lot better!!
I finished watching this drama on Saturday and I've been writing this review ever since then hahaha This was the hardest review I've ever written because of the drama's length and my feelings about it. But, in conclusion, I'd just like to say that this drama really did change something in me and my perception of good and evil and I think the script is simply genius for making us like the guy who was supposed to be bad and how restraining the "good side" can be. I'll definitely rewatch this in the near future, probably this year or early next year if I'm being honest. When I'm done reading the novel I'll just watch interviews of the cast, suffer on twitter and wait for the MOVIES THAT ARE BEING RELEASED VERY SOON!!! Being a fan of this show is not bad at all.

Stick it out. It's such a great show.
Story: I struggled when I first started this. The first two episodes are SUPER confusing. Then they're followed by about 30 episodes of flasback to make it all make sense. Then once w return to the present, I was confused a bit again before things started getting tied together. I enjoyed this show a lot, but I would b remiss if I didn't admit that a lot of the time was spent not really knowing what was going on. I feel like I need to watch the whole thing a second time to fully put it all together. But 50 episodes is quite a bit, and I would rather spend that time reading the english translation of the books.Acting: The acting in this was great! I do feel there were a few members of the cast that weren't as up to par with others, but it wasn't enough to pull me out of the story, so I have no complaints really.
Music: So much of this show is centered around music. Each of the tunes are absolutely beautiful, and the main theme with lyrics has been on a heavy rotation during my spotify sessions ever since I discovered it
Rewatch Value: As I said before, I do feel the need to rewatch this just so I can watch all the episodes that confused me with more knowledgable eyes. Even if that wasn't the case, the plot was very compelling and there are a lot of layers to all the characters. Even the evil ones have a way of making you feel somewhat sorry for them. I will absolutely rewatch this again in the future.
