Infuriating classic

Wow. I finished this show, I cannot believe it. It took me 2 months (with a little break in between), and I can say.... it was a rollercoaster of emotions.

the good:

- The music slaps so hard, it should not be THAT good. The OST for this show was absolutely amazing, one of the best I dare say!
- Lee Min Ho looked adorable in this show. I think he was like 21 when this aired, and he looked so cute and handsome (despite some of the terrible clothing and his curly hair lmao)
- Woo Bin. I feel like the poor guy did not have any lines until Jan Di went to Macau lmao. He deserved some more screentime because I found him so funny with his random English phrases lmao.

the bad:

- The show was 25 episodes long, and it definitely could have been a little shorter. I got tired of the antics in the last couple episodes.
- Ji Hoo. I am a Ji Hoo hater first and foremost. I do not understand the hype around this man at all. I never liked him, from start to finsih I disliked him. He just kept being too close to Jan Di, even when she was with Jun Pyo, which was super annyoing to see. Especially when he visits her in the fishing village, and he tells her he can't live without her... boy, she is in this fishing village with a broken heart, what are you doing? BE QUIET. He gave me the ick.
- Jan Di's parents. They were so annoying and delusional
- Jun Pyo's mother, obviously. The woman was a complete loser and stalker. Literally pretended like her husband died too, like wtf was that? I hated seeing her smile in the last episode. Also, her double standard?? Jae Kyung was basically Jan Di in rich and privileged? Otherwise, both girls had similar personalities: outspoken, bubbly, thick-headed, outgoing. But anyway.
- Jae Kyung. I liked her at first but my dislike grew stronger once she decided she would move in with Jun Pyo while Jan Di was working as a maid. When she asked Jan Di to her room, showing off her wedding dress, that was when my hatred grew stronger. JK told Jan Di that she would not give up on Jun Pyo, but her means were unfair and annoying. Literally asking Jan Di "Did you not think of me as a friend", but then basically showing off her privilege and wealth.
- Whatever that plot with Yumi was in the last episode lmao??
- The bullying here was far more terrible than in "Meteor Garden" since our F4 had a cult-like following of boys and girls, and these people just decided to joint-bully whatever student. Physical/Emotional abuse/assault and even attempted murder, like ??
- the styling was terrible. Why were these high schoolers dressed like grandpas :(

Overall, the show is cult or whatever, but it was so exhausting to watch it. It had its good moments but there were too many wtf moments. The OST deserves some Grammy's though!

A bit dated, but a classic

After finally watching this, I understand why it is consideres a "must see"/classic.
So many other C- and K-dramas have obviously been influenced by this.
If anything, I recommend watching this as an insight into this type of dramas.

I happened to watch the Chinese adaption (Meteor garden) of this before this Korean version. Not sure which one I like the most, to be honest.

Even though the script had some questionable logic here and there, the story itself contains "it all": rich and poor, love rivalry, disapproving parents ...

W♡nder-Girl Meets Bad☆Boy☆Band! °8.3° °Excellent°

Wondering if this is worth your time?

If you love Kromcoms, this show is mandatory. If you think romcoms are Daebek, SK or otherwise, you will want to add this one to your list. Here's the test: If you aren't starstruck by ep2's conclusion, just move on; BOF is not for you.

Jun-Pyo may love viewing the skies through his telescope, but BOF isn't intended to be viewed through a high powered one. Lie back, look at the stars and dream a spell. Yes, there's consistency issues, and 2-2-Too much back and forth. Yet, I couldn't stop watching. 25 episodes is a LOT, and yes, it should have been trimmed back. The last vignette is best forgotten; it's that 5th season that never should have been made. Ask Jun-Pyo to hand over a towel in order to wipe that one away.

Additionally, it stretches credulity a tad far when we see these ruthless and cruel overlords of the school all (rather quickly) turn from black holes into North Stars. Actually, the 3 aren't necessarily cruel, but they are indifferent, which is just as bad. Since they were in playpens together, it seems that his 3 quasi underlings just let Jun-Pyo be Jun-Pyo. He is the sole instigator, the solar flare. Jan-di's parents are over the top of Namsam tower extra, but within the sphere of comedies at large. Jan-di has some strange moments in the first 3 or so episodes. She almost looks (clinically) spastic. Obviously, the director was going for laughs, but ultimately gets a "Huh?" None of that is important, though, because this is very Pride and Prejudice (especially if Darcy had an evil queen for a mother) with some Beauty and the Beast stardust thrown in.

Geum Jan-di is a beautiful soul, and Gu Jun-pyo loves her so completely, that I fell for them. Their relationship is lovable... when it's not WWIII, that is. The way they tit-for-tat fight, make up, and merely converse (always addressing each other using full names only, for example) is adorable. The leads did a bang-up job: The attachment feels authentic, and the sparks are visceral. While I haven't seen the lauded Japanese version, Koo Hye-sun is perfect - she's artsy, smart, and still forward-strong: She's a singer-songwriter, actress, director and artist now. I love her Jan-di, except for the loose handful of Red Cards. Lee Min-Ho - Don't dismiss him. He's not a heartthrob merely because he dropped from the sky that way. He built his image one work at a time, and BOF was his big launch to international stardom.

It does make sense that he falls for her, btw. "No" is something he'd never heard. Ever. He's no longer a lone star in upper space looking down on everything. Here comes a moon at his level, orbiting him. He loves the challenge. While engaging in the contest and in partial shock a girl exists that isn't interested in him, Gu Jun-Pyo concludes that Jan-di is the #only light in his sky. He's been denied love and family time, which is what his heart wants most. She blew his mind by standing up to him. He fixates on Jan-di as his panacea, his home. He boorishly pursues her, knowing nothing but bossing people around. He'll grab her arm to drag her somewhere, and she #lets him. She, likely, has no idea why(?!) she lets him. She certainly doesn't want to like him - given how much she °loathes° him. The human heart is a mystery, indeed. If you find his behavior offensive, you're right, but only for a twinkle. Gu Jun-Pyo is a quasar, Jan-di, the red giant. Once their paths collide, the quasar changes course, shooting down to earth. All those episodes find Jan-di schooling Gu Jun-Pyo. He accepts her tutoring and becomes a better, happier, more peaceful man. The opening of the show finds him a veritable toddler - le infantile terrible - throwing tantrums and money at everything that vexes him. Don't think for a moment that he's domineering, abusive, or controlling in the relationship; that ain't what's going down. Jan-di would kick him in the head if she didn't want his attentions. Anyone thinking Gu Jun-Pyo is in the lead is projecting. He enters HER world, and it's endearing. They travel light-years to bond, only to have that bond tested to the extreme. The gravitational pull between them only strengthens as they share any orbit to work through obstacles together.

BOF is an excellent choice for teens. Jan-di is a shining role model. Her beautiful smile elevates all who are in her proximity (except The Witch). She stands for what's right. She is courageous. She's a veritable Joan Of Arc in the battle for Shinwa High- Without the burned-at-the-stake thing. Yet, she can be as comforting as a plate of warm pancakes. The way Gu Jun-Pyo adores her, emitting rays of warmth in which she can bask, should resonate with teenage girls, and prod them to reflect on their standards when it comes to boyfriend material. If you can swim with it and overlook some of the goofy stuff, you will escape to the great beyond with this entire group of friends. You will also be treated to an epic kiss, mid thruway at rush hour, in the background is the sun dropping from the sky, igniting the space between them. Eat your hearts out Sunny, Ginger & Miranda.

The notoriety of the show, which includes its effect on popular culture, plus the fact that BOF boosted Kdramas' popularity globally, as well as the numerous nominations and awards bestowed all supply evidence that this series is WONDER-FUL.

For Age 13+ with cautions: Jan-di gets duped into taking fetish photos. She's shown in a childlike skirt and wearing bunny ears. She holds up a revealing costume and refuses to put it on. There are two setups to look like two singles shared a bedroom (to get an enemy in trouble), and there was a lie about a pregnancy scare. These would all be good for generating worthy discussions regarding safety of person and reputation. Decide accordingly.

fanfiction live action

I first started watching ´Boys Over Flowers´ because it appeard on every romantic comedy drama suggestions, so…oh well, i decided to give it a try. Also, since years ago i´ve watched the anime version (Hana Yori Dango) i already knew what was coming around, still… it made me curious how they would produce this story.
I don´t know about the previous live action dramas ( maybe someday i´ll give it a try as well) but I was not expecting this drama version to be soooo good! The producers and the whole cast managed to improve some details of the story telling by focussing on and expanding every characters´ back stories, personalities and emotions in a very charismatic way, unlike the anime version ´Hana Yori Dango´, that payed more atention on the main roles instead.
Not to mention the ost was extremely catchy. Loved it! I coulnd´t stop singing along whenever such songs as ´Paradise´ (Almoooost Paradise! xD), ´Stand by me´, ´Because i´m Stupid´, and ´One more time´came on. They were stuck in my head for days.
The only, tiny thing that i didn´t fully apreciate was the final episodes near the ending.. in my opinion they dragged it a little too much with that unnecessary final obstacle between the main charecters, because let´s be honest, they already had enough throughout the entire show. However, it was still a great ending.
Now, some of you might be asking: Is it worth a rewatch? My answer is definitely. Every element present in it is what makes it a classic in the history of dramas. So if you have it in your ´Plan to watch´ list or are considering to add it, then don´t miss it.

Personal Review

It was a solid show, but the ending was a little disappointing, especially with the plot of characters leaving 4 years instead of staying with each other. Also, the father kind of just... Left? I assume it's because something happe ned to the actor, but it was a bit weird. I wish things would've gone more nice for Geum friend. She was left without answers and heart broken too many times. Yi-jeong should've treated her better. I wanted that ship to SAIL! Gu and Geum communication was terrible, which led them to having more problems. It's almost like Geum would've been better Ji Hoo, her "soulmate." I wasn't really attracted to him, but I wish he was given more a chance in the story. I wish Gu's mother would've honestly apologize for all the harm she did, but she literally did nothing. Very disappointed. She was one of the main reason why Gu and Geum kept breaking up! Overall, the character I would I say I fit the most in is Song Woo-bin. He plays as a side character in the story and doesn't have a strong personality like the others, but just like him I would probably be on the sidelines trying to help with others relationship. I wouldn't per say "beat people up," but if I had to, I would. I wish he had more of a character arc. He poses as goofy, which I am, and hangs out with Yi-jeong; which I would love to do. Also, he's a great dancer, if you know whattaaaa I MEANNAN.

Don't do it.

I was very small when I watched this. At the time, I saw nothing wrong with it. Now that I'm older, I can see how bad it is. I wouldn't recommend watching this, because, it's pretty TOXIC. The story is not that great either. There are so many better dramas out there. Don't waste your time with this one! Take this as a warning, haha. Pretend it doesn't exist! xD

This was the first Kdrama I ever saw and I've just loved it ever since~! In fact, I already re-watched it and kind of want to watch it again... Yes, it is quite long and near the end it gets a little... of track? But still, I just adore this drama and would recommend it any day~~ especially to people who are new to Kdramas~!! This is a MUST watch~~ ^^

Boys Over Flowers (2009)

The show has essentially become a cult classic over the years. For many, it was their first foray into the K-Drama scene and thus carries a strong sense of nostalgia and reminiscence.

But it should really stop there.

Cliché after cliché , trope after trope, stereotype after stereotype. Iffy characters at best trying to navigate their way around a wildly over the top plotline. It romanticizes unhealthy relationships that offer heavy emotional baggage with little to no payoff. Without a doubt, the show's core is an ugly mess protected by its presentation and production values.

Ironic, since it claims to prefer boys over flowers.

I thought the drama was awesome except for the first two episode and half of the last episode. Regardless of what everyone has said about this drama, to us it was great. There are quite a few tears shed by my wife on this drama. We even watch the drama over again and was hooked again. Geum Jan Di's character to us was acted well, she made us feel for her, given her situation. She displayed a strong willed character that went against all odds, of course, with help from the F4.
