Yes, I just spent the time to watch all 49 episodes again and glad I did. It's sweep, cineamatography, costuming, acting, direction, music and script held me captivated years later. I feel bereft that it is over. I love the two men and all the cast around them. Will be hard to go back to regular BL fare. This isn't the standard fare, but it's so much richer and better than GMMTV fodder. They stick in your heart and soul after it is done. Please watch. It's that good.Was this review helpful to you?
Under the surface, there is a good and believable story
I can't decide if I like this. I liked the acting of the opera actor, but the other one tired me. So, I couldn't really forget myself in the story and enjoy it. If the actors act like they themselves are the center of the show and the role is not important to them, it gets tiring. Also, there are tons of clichés, lots of unoriginal tropes and lots of predictable subplots.The premise is good and it has some good sub-plots, but there are a lot of slow scenes and episodes full of repeatable content and a lot of careful walking around the issue. There is strong BL element, although not explicit. However, this is just part of the story. If the writers didn't try too much to avoid censorship and paid attention to the rest of the plot, it would have been a good plot.
To be honest, I speed-clicked a lot through the episodes.

10/10 Winter Begonia- Not Just Bromance but Hauntingly and Beautifully Romatic.Just finished watching Winter Begonia and I gotta say, this drama has it ALL.
It's perfect in every way, visually stunning, soundtracks and OSTs are beautiful...the Plot is SO Beautifully laid out. It has everything: Comedy, Drama, Tragedy, Bromance, True Love, Cheesy romantic lines, everything. The characters are all SO on point, there is not a single moment I fast forwarded. The leads Yin Zheng and Huang Xiaoming have given such breathtaking and refreshing performances, it made me wish this drama was longer than 49 episodes. I am generally a little wary of Cdramas set in the Early 90s...But this show really focuses on Lives of Opera artists as well as the relationship between rich Businessman Cheng Feng Tai & Opera Artist Shang Xi Rui!
In my opinion, Winter Begonia really pushed boundaries and low-key crossed the thin line that separates BL from Bromance to the point where it shocks you how this even passed censorship! PS; l've always found Peking Opera fascinating because of their make-up and costumes but this show made me really appreciate the music and singing...Turns out, the only thing one needs to respect and appreciate Peking Opera was English Subtitles :P

Solide historische Serie mit grandioser Optik – aber als BL leider enttäuschend
49 mit je 40 Minuten Episoden für eine zensierte BL Produktion ist sehr ungewöhlich, aber die Länge bindet den Zuschauer auch mehr an die Figuren und die Geschichte.Die Geschichte per se war gut, obwohl es einige Teile unnötig, in die Länge gezogen oder verwirrend waren.
Die Charaktere sind liebenswert und wachsen einem von Folge zu Folge immer mehr ans Herz, auch wenns sich einige manchmal sehr kindisch für ihr Alter benehmen.
Look & Atmosphäre
Optisch ist die Serie super. Kostüme, Make-up und die Kulissen sind erstklassig geworden – vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass das Ganze während der Corona-Krise gedreht wurde!
Ein kleiner persönlicher Minuspunkt: Mit dem traditionellen Operngesang konnte ich nicht viel anfangen, das klang für mich eher wie Gekreische. Aber hey, es gehört nun mal zur Story und wurde handwerklich gut umgesetzt.
Das "BL"-Problem
Wer hier ein zensiertes BL-Drama im Stil von The Untamed oder Word of Honor erwartet, wird leider enttäuscht werden. Die "versteckten" Hinweise auf eine Romanze sind ein absoluter Tropfen auf den heißen Stein. Auf 49 Folgen kommen vielleicht acht winzige Szenen, die man auch nur bemerkt, wenn man weiß, dass es sich eigentlich um eine BL Geschichte handelt. Dass Cheng Feng Tai verheiratet ist, macht es für BL-Fans nicht gerade leichter. Viele wundern sich, wie die Serie die Zensur umgehen konnte – mich wundert es ehrlich gesagt überhaupt nicht, weil kaum noch was vom BL übrig ist.
Was mich storytechnisch gestört hat (Achtung, Spoiler!)
Die Sache mit der Schwester: Warum sagt Shang Xi Rui seiner Schwester nicht einfach, wer er ist? Nur weil sie keine Operndarsteller mag, gibt er seine Rolle als großer Bruder an einen Wildfremden ab und verschenkt auch noch das Familienamulett? Das war für mich absolut unverständlich.
Chen Renxiangs Tod: Warum bringt er sich mitten auf der Bühne vor dem ganzen Publikum um? Und das nicht mal wegen seiner gebrochenen Beine, sondern wegen Herzschmerz. Das war mir viel zu melodramatisch und für die eigentliche Hauptstory total irrelevant.
Das Minen-Drama: Die ganze fette Action-Szene in der Mine, in der der japanische General stirbt und Cheng Feng Tai schwer verletzt wird, war im Grunde umsonst. Es sollte eine große Kriegswende sein, aber danach hat sich gefühlt gar nichts Relevantes verändert. Schlecht geschrieben und unnötig.
Das Ende: Offene Enden sind okay, aber die letzte Szene war einfach nur verwirrend. Man sieht Shang Xi Rui zum Bahnhof rennen – nur um dann zu merken, dass das nur eine Wunschvorstellung/Illusion von Cheng Feng Tai war. Warum zeigt man ihn nicht einfach direkt am Bahnhof? Das hätte völlig gereicht, anstatt den Zuschauer so zu verwirren.
Fazit: Die Story an sich ist gut, auch wenn einiges unnötig in die Länge gezogen wurde. Man darf nur nicht mit der Erwartung rangehen, hier eine gute zensierte BL-Liebesgeschichte zu sehen. Wer historische Dramen und tolle Bilder mag, kann aber definitiv mal einen Blick riskieren!

Uma verdadeira joia rara. É assim que eu descreveria essa série.É a história de amor mais linda que já assisti. Uma verdadeira obra de arte. Mestre Shang é um cantor da opera de Pequim jovem e impulsivo, mas extremamente talentoso. Líder de uma trupe que enfrenta vários problemas financeiros até serem apadrinhados por Cheng Fengtai, um rico empresário que possui uma história triste relacionada à opera de Pequim. Os caminhos de Shang e Fengtai se cruzam, levando a um relacionamento engraçado e doce.
Os personagens são complexos, bem desenvolvidos e passam por crescimento significativo ao longo da série. Todo o elenco fez um trabalho maravilhoso para dar vida a esses personagens. A atuação é simplesmente de primeira. Yin Zheng e Huang Xiaoming desempenham seus papéis com maestria, criando uma química incrível entre os personagens, deixando você com a sensação de ter assistido à mais bela história de amor no período mais turbulento da história chinesa.
Sempre achei a história da Ópera de Pequim e a cultura por trás dela fascinantes. E essa série me fez realmente apreciar a música e o canto. Adorei assistir as cenas de ópera e como algumas de suas árias se entrelaçavam com o enredo ou refletiam os sentimentos dos personagens. Além disso, a série oferece uma visão fascinante das mudanças sociais na China daquela época.
Os figurinos usados nas performances de ópera são deslumbrantes, intricadamente projetados e cheios de simbolismo.Os cenários foram meticulosamente criados para refletir a década de 1930, transportando os espectadores para a China pré-guerra.
