Upcoming 2019 Manga Adaptations (Part 2) Kasuga Takao is a boy who loves reading books, particularly Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal. A girl at his school, Saeki Nanako, is his muse and his Venus, and he admires her from a distance. One day, he forgets his copy of Les Fleurs du Mal in the classroom and runs back alone to pick it up. In the classroom, he finds not only his book but Saeki's gym uniform. On a mad impulse, he steals it. Now everyone knows "some pervert" stole Saeki's uniform, and Kasuga is dying with shame and guilt. Furthermore, the weird, creepy, and friendless girl of the class, Nakamura, saw him take the uniform. Instead of revealing it was him, she recognizes his kindred deviant spirit and uses her knowledge to take control of his life. Will it be possible for Kasuga to get closer to Saeki, despite Nakamura's meddling and his dark secret? What exactly does Nakamura intend to do with him? It isn't that bad
-Aku no Hana is a very interesting story and follows complex themes . I think the movie makes 10x more sense if you've read the manga and not only that the manga is just better. Even though the movie is extremely similar to the original it does not feel the same and it just feels off. I feel like everything just went too fast and if you are new to the story you might get a bit confused.-I liked the acting and although the characters seem a bit weird and awkward at times they are meant to be kind of crazy so it was okay, Although it definitely did seem a bit overdramatic at times which was kind of funny.
-Its very depressing, dark, sad and chaotic so if you like stuff like that, you'll probably like this!
-I love how beautiful each shot was and how many small details they were, the music was okay too and it was not that bad.
Overall, it isn't that bad but I'd definitely recommend reading the manga to get the full experience.
"and if you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you."
It’s definitely not a film for everyone, but it expressed something I deeply relate to and that was cathartic for me. Anyone who dismisses it as merely weird or perverted is missing how profound it truly is. It touches on everything — from the struggles of adolescence and mental health to a subtle critique of Japanese society with the lack of mental health support, stigma, detached overworking parents, etc. It’s raw, powerful, and honest. The opening line even states it’s meant for those who have suffered through puberty, which sets the tone perfectly. Of course, Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal is part of the film. The symbolism is brilliant — I especially loved the “other side” theme. It’s probably this impactful because it condenses a massive, masterful manga into just two hours, making the experience intense and overwhelming in the best way. Honestly, this movie found me rather than the other way around.
My personal highlight was Takao's actor — his performance resonated with me like no one else’s could. And the cinematography? Absolutely stunning — every frame was thoughtful, beautiful, and full of meaning.
