For eighteen generations, samurai of the Shiba House have suppressed the evil intentions of the Gedoushu, malevolent spirits that enter the world of the living from gaps between buildings and other structures. Now, Takeru Shiba, the youngest head of the Shiba Clan must gather his four vassals in order to battle the Gedoushu under the revived Doukoku Chimatsuri as the Shinkengers. However, as they are joined by his childhood friend Genta, the vassals slowly learn that there's a reason for Takeru's behavior that sets him apart from his predecessors. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger is the title of Toei Company's thirty-third entry in its long-running Super Sentai Series of Japanese tokusatsu television series. It premiered on February 15, 2009, the week following the finale of Engine Sentai Go-onger, and ended on February 7, 2010. It joined Kamen Rider Decade as a program featured in TV Asahi's Super Hero Time programming block, and following Decade's finale it aired alongside Kamen Rider W. Its footage is being used for the 2011 American series Power Rangers Samurai. The catchphrase for the series is "Authorized by divine providence!!". Edit Translation

Shinkenger is a really good story. Not only has great fighting scenes but also gets into you easily.

You'll be inside the battle agains Gedoushuu and understand how is it to be a Sentai - like the other 37, but all of them has their secret. Shinkenger mastered the way of surprising us, with a lot of twists and fierce battles. It's important to say we're invited to start a reflection about friendship, courage, team work and what makes a true leader. Since it's like a nation symbol, like ninjas, it makes me think why did they take so much to work the samurai theme... lol Even for modern concepts and thoughts, it's nice to see the samurai culture in action. There's also the care of building deep characters even among the villains. Some of them also have a past which is great to explore, like Juuzou and Dayuu. It's so much more in Gedoushuu than getting out of Sanzu River. They're also thinking creatures, dealing with emotion and concerns.

Samurai Sentai Shinkenger is a masterpiece. The whole concept adapts really well into our reality without losing its magic. Also, the psychologic analysis in all of them really makes a difference. Hope you guys enjoy it.

interesting mix of villains

This is my first real introduction to the Super Sentai franchise. I have seen several seasons of the American version of Power Rangers as a kid, but I've never really sat through an entire season of Super Sentai. I kind of just picked one to start with and samurais are cool, so "Samurai Sentai Shinkenger" seemed look a good starting point. It's more or less what I kind of expected. Sometimes the acting is a little cringe, but overall, it's also very heartfelt and has decent character developments. Even the antagonists have some interesting backstories and personalities, giving them depth and humanity. I definitely do feel like Super Sentai has more heart than its western counterpart.

● SHORT REVIEW
-------------------------------------------

LIKES:
-- a good blend of comedy and heartfelt moments.
-- interesting villains/Gedoushu with different personalities. They have some dimension to them. Several of them have a history and their own story and motive. Outside of their conflict with the Shinkengers, they also struggle with their own emotions and issues.
-- cool villain designs
-- a lot of heartfelt lessons on leadership, doing good, discipline, becoming better, teamwork, compassion, etc. There is also a focus on identity and the things that makes us who we care. Everyone has a story and there is often more than meet the eyes. Very typical of hero series like this. It's not all the cool actions and fighting bad guys, it's also about building character and instilling life lessons.
-- towards the end of the series, a character is introduced and I love that they were a very likable character, adding a layer of difficulty to the internal conflict and predicament of the Shinkengers.
-- I enjoyed the development of the characters. I think Chiaki was probably my favorite in term of his relationship/dynamic with Takeru.

DISLIKES:
-- I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending. We spent a lot of time building bonds between characters, but once they completed their mission, the process of moving on felt quick. I know they'll keep in contact, but I was expecting a more heartfelt ending.
-- While I do like the origami zords, I wasn't really a fan of the bulky design when all of the existing origamis combined. It felt like there was too much going on.

● NOTE
-------------------------------------------

I'll always conclude my review by saying that ratings and reviews is not really a indicator of whether you may enjoy something. We all have different criteria and standards. Don't let a bad rating, review, or comment discourage you from watching something. My advice will always be to give something a chance if the premise interests you, and only use the ratings/reviews to determine priority if you have a list, or if you're deciding if you want to continue it due to time limitations.
