It's recommended that you finish watching all 176 episodes of the donghua found here first before embarking on the 8-part BTS mini series from above:

Q: in certain donghua behind the scene motion capture clips involving lots of flying and fighting sequences, how come the motion actors are not seen wearing anything like white dots to indicate their motion? in fact they are dressed in plain casual spring time atire
Deepseek REPLIES:
You're right, it is surprising to see motion capture actors in plain clothes without the classic white dots! What you're observing in those donghua behind-the-scenes clips is very likely a markerless motion capture system. This is a modern alternative to the traditional marker-based motion capture that most people are familiar with
.
Here’s a breakdown of why you're seeing this and how the technology works.
🚀 What is Markerless Motion Capture?
Unlike traditional systems that rely on special suits covered in reflective markers, markerless motion capture uses advanced cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) to track movement. The system is trained on thousands of videos to understand human anatomy and can automatically identify key points on the body—like your head, shoulders, elbows, and knees—directly from a video
. The motion actor simply performs in their regular clothing.
⚙️ How Does the "No Dots" Magic Work?
The process is a fascinating application of computer vision and AI. Here’s a simplified step-by-step of what's happening behind the scenes:
Step 1: Multi-Angle Recording. Multiple cameras are set up around the performance space. They film the actor from every possible angle to capture the full depth and dimension of their movement
.
Step 2: AI-Powered Skeleton Detection. Powerful software analyzes the video footage frame by frame. Using AI and pose estimation algorithms, it identifies the actor's body and maps a digital "skeleton" onto them, accurately locating all the major joints
.
Step 3: 3D Reconstruction and Application. By combining the 2D data from all the different camera angles, the software calculates the precise 3D position of each joint. This data is then applied to a 3D character model, making it move exactly as the actor did
.
✨ Why Use Markerless for Flying and Fighting?
This technology is particularly well-suited for the complex sequences you see in donghua:
Complete Freedom of Movement: For action-packed scenes with lots of flying and fighting, actors need to move without restriction. Markerless capture allows for this completely natural performance, without being hampered by a tight suit or worrying about knocking off a marker
.
Faster Setup: Traditional marker-based systems can take a long time to suit up and calibrate. Markerless systems are much quicker to set up, allowing the team to focus on capturing the best performance
.
Increasing Accuracy: While traditional marker-based systems are still considered the gold standard for the most demanding, ultra-precise work, markerless technology has advanced incredibly fast. For many applications, including the dynamic sequences in animation, its accuracy is more than sufficient
.
🤔 But Isn't the Old Way Still Used?
Absolutely! It's not that one method has completely replaced the other; they are often used for different needs. Here’s a quick comparison:
| Feature | Markerless Motion Capture | Traditional Marker-Based Motion Capture |
|---|---|---|
| Actor's Attire | Plain, casual clothing |
Tight suit with reflective markers
| Key Technology | AI, Computer Vision, Standard Cameras |
Specialized Cameras, Reflective Markers
| Primary Advantage | Freedom of movement, fast setup, portable |
Highest possible precision and accuracy
| Common Use Cases | Donghua, video games, sports analysis, VR |
High-budget films, complex medical/scientific research In fact, some of the most cutting-edge studios are now using hybrid solutions that combine both methods. For instance, the company that provided motion capture for the game Black Myth: Wukong (a common reference point for high-quality Chinese action animation) has developed a system that fuses markerless data with optical markers to get the best of both worlds: the natural feel of markerless and the pinpoint accuracy of markers
.
So, next time you see a behind-the-scenes clip with actors in t-shirts and jeans performing incredible stunts, you'll know they're at the forefront of motion capture technology, letting AI do the heavy lifting of tracking their every move.
I hope this clears up the mystery! Are you curious about the specific software or camera setups used for this kind of capture?
Hunter2022:
Somebody tried to bribe BiliBili in the comments section of the above video with $50 to highlight his post in red (near the bottom of the comments). He thinks he's supporting the company but actually humiliated the production team who had worked on Nezha 2 and also contracted to produce various donghua series not just for BiliBili alone (they are all probably gazillionaires by now!)
If you look at the date, his bribe was made shortly after the video was uploaded to YT. Normally BiliBili attaches the ENG subs to their videos on YT soon afterwards. Since he made his $50 comment in English, BiliBili has withheld the ENG subs for the video (no subs yet after 2 weeks).
Chinese people never tell you straight up but their actions imply. BiliBili is probably withholding the ENG subs to tell English commenters like him to go away, we don't need your bribes (ahem donations)!!
Can you imagine trying to bribe upscale companies like BiliBili let alone millionaire producers and directors of the work? (Talk about being rude and showing lack of respect for "The Team" [and their socio-economic rank])
BTW, I think the commenter on YT also posts here regularly in the comments section under the same first name. I would avoid interacting with users like him since it's not like BiliBili to be open to accepting bribes from people like him...
