They are isolated by their families and communicate by writing in a secret sisterly language, Nü shu (a historical practice in China in that period) on a unique Chinese fan that Snow Flower possesses. In the present day Shanghai, their descendants Sophia Liao and Nina Wei struggle with the intimacy of their own pure and intense childhood friendship. As teenagers, Sophia and Nina were introduced to the idea of laotong, and they signed a traditional laotong contract on the cover of Canto-pop Faye Wong's album Fu Zao (Restless in English). Eventually they are separated but come together again when Sophia falls into a coma after being struck by a taxi while cycling. Reunited at long last, they must come to understand the story of the strong and close ancestral connection hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan or lose one another forever in the process.

When her relationship falls apart because of her father's interference, she just happens to post the above message on a mobile phone dating service. Ryosuke, a blue-collar warehouse worker at Shinagawa Pier, replies to Mika's message. Daiba and Shinagawa Pier are separated by Tokyo Bay. Mika is a career woman working at a major firm. Ryosuke lives a meager life doing manual labor at a warehouse. There seems to be nothing in common between the two. Still, destiny brings them together. One day Mika happens to find her late mother Yuri's diary. Written within is the tale of Yuri's concealed relationship with a Japanese man before she married Masao. Mika finds out about her mother's hidden past and her passion for the man she loved. Without knowing it, she is about to follow the same path as her mother.
The story will focus on a love triangle between the three leads. Eikura plays the role of Morimoto Naoko, a girl from the countryside whose first love is her uncle, Ikezawa Masato. She follows after him to Tokyo by getting admitted into an elite medical university, but there she runs into Masato's girlfriend and colleague Aya, a beautiful and intelligent researcher who is the daughter of the university hospital's director. However, things get complicated after Naoko and Masato meet again.
Due to an accident, Sakura Hiraga gave up on her dream. She is now married and her husband runs a hair salon. They live in a luxurious penthouse apartment. Her life seems glamorous and she is envied by everyone. What everyone does not know is that Sakura Hiraga is abused physically and verbally by her husband. She is unable to leave her situation. A housewife becomes enraged with jealousy over her husband's affair. Meanwhile, their son sits in the periphery, observing their violent confrontations. The mother then goes into the son's room and from there it hovers the family into tragedy.
20-year old Deok Yi’s quiet small-town life gets exciting when a former University Professor, Hak Kyu, moves in, running from the scandal of a sexual harassment allegation. He works as a literature instructor at a culture center and she works at an old amusement park. Mutual attraction leads the pair into a lusty affair, but when the fall semester begins, Hak Kyu is reinstated at the university and returns to his family in Seoul, leaving Deok Yi behind. She refuses to let the relationship die, and a confrontation between them turns tragic when Hak Kyu’s wife commits suicide. 8 years later, Hak Kyu is a popular writer, but he is barely able to see, losing his eyesight to a disease, and he's estranged from his daughter Cheong, who blames him for her mother's death. At this time, he befriends Se-Jung, a new neighbor who moves in next door. He gladly accepts her help and Cheong becomes romantically attached to her, neither realizing she is in fact Deok Yi, the woman Hak Kyu betrayed 8 years ago, now on a quest to destroy them. Her plan sets off a vengeance-fuelled chain of events that ultimately sets the three bitter, angry and desperate schemers on a twisting collision course with each other.
Kanzaki Miwa is married to Kanzaki Hiroki and is a full-time housewife. She used to work for a large company but made the difficult decision to quit her job and become a full-time housewife in hopes of having a child. But her marriage life isn't going very well as her love for her husband has cooled considerably. Hiroki acts like an ideal husband when around others, but he speaks harsh words to her when they are alone. She lives her days like a bird in a cage. One day, Miwa meets her childhood friend Fuyutsuki Ryo, whom she hasn't seen in years. Back then, Ryo was like a hero to her and loved by her. When she was in trouble, he always came and helped her. They make the fateful decision to spend the night together, and Miwa later finds out that she is pregnant with his child. She doesn't want to divorce her husband and become a single mom because she doesn't have a job. To protect her baby, she decides to tell her husband that she is pregnant with his child.
Aizawa Naoya is happily married to his colleague Kana but faces temptation to cheat on his wife when a new employee Tachibana Noa joins his branch and seduces him repeatedly with all sorts of antics.
