I think viewers are too harsh on XJ for their past lifetimes. SF's suffering was always his choice; it's one of the reasons he's such a lovable character. He gives and gives without expecting anything in return. XJ should be ruthless throughout her 1st-9th lifetimes because her hatred is still raw. Like SF said, he slowly melted her heart with each lifetime until she was finally able to love in their 10th.
