In the early 1980s, in northwestern Shanxi, Han Chong, who had never married and lived a quiet life, took in La Hong, who had a mute wife and two children, out of kindness. La Hong was lazy and often beat and scolded his mute wife. Han Chong was caught in a dilemma, unable to do anything about it, as La Hong already had his share of troubles, and the whole village knew about his shrewish mistress across the ditch. A few days later, La Hong accidentally stepped on Han Chong's badger snare and flew into the sky. The secluded mountain village erupted in chaos, with cadres and elders repeatedly trying to mediate how to compensate the widow, but the mute woman refused to accept any money. Han Chong had no choice but to take responsibility for supporting the mother and her three children until the mute woman clearly stated the amount of compensation.
