The story revolves around Kiyo, a young Japanese woman who is engaged to marry Teruo. Teruo returns to Japan after studying abroad in Europe, accompanied by a German journalist named Margot. Kiyo struggles to adjust to Teruo's changed attitudes, influenced by Western culture and becomes increasingly desperate as their relationship deteriorates.
