Lost You Forever

长相思 第一季 ‧ Drama ‧ 2023

Ah, I love this type of melancholy.

Regarding the moon, I don’t think the description is accidental. It’s possible that Tong Hua didn’t randomly choose to have Xiang Liu die on a night with a round moon, but intentionally left out the word full - "full moon", even though it probably was. Metaphorically speaking, that "full" moon probably disappeared for Xiao Yao the moment Xiang Liu died. Kinda like tthe moon is still round, still there, but it’s no longer a full moon for Xiao Yao after Xiang Liu’s death. The symbol remains, but the meaning of it has changed.

Kokuto:
I've been watching it too. Liu Xue Yi and Tong Hou? How could I resist? Though it really is more about the female leads. And yes! I noticed lots of LYF cast members. I can't believe the actor for TS Hou got another resting villain face role! lol

It’s the first time I’m seeing LXY in a more traditional male lead role. I think his past repertoire gives him a charismatic edge. You can see the traces of intensity even as he's playing a more moderate character. Oh, I found another LYF character – Dr. Yin!

Kokuto:

SnowcupArc:

Did anyone else notice the resemblance between the teen actress, playing the younger female lead in the first episode, to Xiao Yao (YZ)? Uncanny.

Hmmm. You mean to Yang Zi? Not sure I see it. But she was definitely excellent. All the actors are very good.

In LYF, A Heng had modified XY’s appearance as a child to hide her lineage, and I remember thinking the younger XY actress was well-cast, as she appeared more like the actor who played Shao Hao. But the teen actress in ATC had me thinking of XY in her adolescent-god years – those adventurous years when she had to live by her wits in gambling houses and brothels after escaping the nine-tailed fox cage. I’m assuming XY would have gradually taken on a closer appearance to how she looked in Qingshui Town.

@blabla100

It is particularly poignant when we realise that Xiao Yao's thoughts at the end are a call back to what she once told Xiang Liu during the ocean stroll:

Xiao Liu murmured, “No matter how rare a scenery is, one will get tired of it if seen too often. It is only meaningful if someone is with me to see it. Sceneries are dead, only people can give it meaning.”

And when she finally sees the round moon once more after his death, it is telling that the moon was described as "cold and desolate", a reflection of her own heart because the person who gave that scenery meaning was utterly, irrevocably lost to her at last.

~~~~
In both texts, it refers to the moon as round, not specifically full, though it is usually implied that a round moon would refer to a full moon. Apart form the classifier 一轮, there are several specific terms for full moon which are used in the novel - 满月 (full moon), 圆月 (literally "round moon") and 望日 (astronomical term for day of the full moon).
满月 (full moon):
  • when Xiang Liu confronted Xiao Yao for lying after she reclaimed her identity as Gao Xin princess
  • each month when Xiang Liu healed her under the ocean
  • the moon on the day that Jing had initially chosen to marry her before he was ambushed
  • when Xiang Liu saved Xiao Yao in the depths of Jade Lake at Jade Mountain
圆月 (round moon):
  • when Xiao Liu met Xiang Liu about securing Tian'er's freedom from the brothel
  • Xiao Yao's boat outing with Cang Xuan, Jing, Hou, Feng Long, Xin Yue and Yi Ying
  • when Xing Chen guided her with the bow recognition ritual
  • the night Xiang Liu and Xiao Yao listened to the mermaid's song after the visit to the Shaman king
  • the intended wedding day where Xiao Yao waited in vain for Jing
  • the night Xiao Yao severed her ties with Xiang Liu and he demanded her blood as payment
望日 (day of the full moon):
  • the day the Yellow Emperor chose for the prayer ceremony before going to Zi Jin Summit on Shen Nong mountain
  • Gao Xin king announced that Xiao Yao's name is removed from the royal family's genealogy
  • A Nian became Cang Xuan's empress
  • the day Jing chose to marry Xiao Yao before he was attacked
一轮 (classifier for a round object):
  • Xiang Liu and Xiao Yao gazing at the moon during the ocean stroll (一轮明月 "a round bright moon")
  • when Xiang Liu saved Xiao Yao in the depths of Jade Lake at Jade Mountain (一轮满月 "a round full moon")
  • Xiao Yao staring at the reflection of the round moon by the banks of Jade Lake the night before her succession as the Royal Mother (一轮月影 "the reflection of a round moon")
  • staring at the moon above the palace walls after Xiang Liu's death (一轮皓月 "a round luminous moon")
  • the night Xiang Liu and Xiao Yao listened to the mermaid's song after the visit to the Shaman king (一轮明亮的圆月 "a round, bright, full moon")
The first thing I saw him in was In Blossom, where he did play a more traditional ML. But then everything I watched after that he was ... very ruthless. I still have seen Blood of Youth, though.
So, many of the LYF cast. It's wonderful. Though I wish my beloved Ru Shou was in it. :(
This is another big hit for Tong Hua's Star Lotus, for Tencent. They should be handing them a blank check now. I wonder what they'll do next?
Ah, ok. I can see that. She was in Filter as the teenaged Su Cheng Cheng.
Kokuto:
We don't have a Xiang Liu type character at all. But I did notice that the FILTER account gave a shout out to Tan Jian Ci for his Golden Deer Best Actor award, and then he showed support for Star Lotus, with cloud reservations. Made me wonder if there might a 3rd collaboration in the future? hmmmmm
⚗️👀 Lol, this reminds me of the time we were all intensely studying those pics of XY’s crystal ball. Here’s one for Yaoliu. 🎏 Happy to hear about TJC’s well-deserved win!
There’s something poetic about discussing the moon during this time of year, when the moonlight seems brighter. Perfect timing to revisit these moon descriptions in the novel.
I’m not an expert, but the moon and its phases are more complex than how the moon may appear at a given time. Actually, the full moon happens for a brief moment when the moon attains peak illumination. Depending on location, that moment could occur at any time during the day or night. However, the moon may appear like a full moon (even when it isn’t) for a few days around that time, since it’s difficult to visually distinguish between slight differences of illumination. That range could be extended further to several days with the moon at sufficiently high illumination that could appear as a roundish moon.
Keeping that in mind, it doesn’t seem out of the ordinary that “round” would be applied with some consistency in the moon descriptions, with and without an indication of a full moon. A full moon is always round, but a round moon is commonly not a full moon. I can see why many people would consider a round moon as a full moon, but I’m inclined to think the author added full moon indicators to specific descriptions (excluding others) for this purpose in the novel.
At the risk of adding to the complexity, the drama seems to show a new perspective of the moon on the eve of the final battle. In Season 2 episode 22, this extended scene with Xiang Liu begins with a visible full moon in the sky that later changes to a crescent-like moon, which would seemingly indicate a lunar eclipse that can occur occasionally during a full moon. Since the drama features XL fighting in the battle for six days and nights, this would suggest a possible waning gibbous moon at the time of XL’s final fall.
@Kokuto
In ATC’s episode 33, I spotted the Xie Zhao character partaking in the scholars’ celebratory walk. Usually a glimpse of a character leads to more. I'm thinking Xiu Wan (who fell for Hao’s character) might be similar to Yi Ying in an alternate universe. She too mistook Hao’s character as her intended fiancé. Purely speculation but looks like Xiu Wan’s story could develop along the lines of the idea TH had proposed many years ago about Yi Ying, Hao, and Jing. I’m a bit behind the broadcast now. If that’s the case with Xiu Wan’s character, this could make things quite interesting with the Xie Zhao fellow potentially like – Jing! Lol, this is a fun watch with all of the "compare and contrast" opportunities.
I had another thought about the moon. Why isn’t there a description of the moon during the seminal lovers bugs event? In the novel, the talk by the river happens at night, and XL looks at the moon for a moment before agreeing to XY’s coaxing to transfer the bug to him. It was the single mention of the moon – without a single descriptor. During such an extended activity outdoors from the night-time flight and the piggyback swim to the bugs transfer and the ocean tour, no other references were made to the moon at all. Here’s the single mention:
Chapter 7
Xiao Liu became excited, "You said you have a nine-headed body. Even if I'm in pain, it's nothing to you. Can you help me put the Gu on you?"
Xiang Liu stood with his hands behind his back, gazing at the moon, silent. After a while, he said, "I can help you to attract the Gu to me, but you have to promise to do something for me in the future. As long as I ask, you must do it."
 Xiao Liu thought about it for a while and said, "Except for taking Xuan's life."
Koala: Xiang Liu stood there with his hands behind his back, staring at the moon, saying nothing.
Original: 相柳负手而立,眺望着月亮,沉默不语,
Thanks to recent discussions, the novel’s full moon descriptive examples includes “满月 (full moon), 圆月 (literally "round moon") and 望日 (astronomical term for day of the full moon),” and the classifier 一轮.
However, it seems there is another classical term, not found in the novel – 望月 (wàng yuè) as the full moon (on the astronomical day).
When I revisited the novel’s original text, I couldn’t help but notice that “眺望着月亮” (gazing at the moon) included the words 望 and 月 and wondered if this could be an example of intentional wordplay presenting the subtext of a true full moon during the lovers bugs transfer. An intriguing thought.
In contrast, the drama's event occurred during the daytime with no moon necessary to show us.
I'm on Episode 36, I think. There are similarities between FFYY and Xiu Wan, except I think FFYY is not innocent? That's not the right word, but Xiu Wan is young and spoiled, she was easily manipulated, but when confronted with the truth, she understood she was in the wrong. FFYY isn't concerned about right or wrong, she wants what she wants and is ruthless about getting it ... as to be expected of an assassin.
But yes, I think Xie Zhao will return and Xiu Wan's opinion of him will change. He gets brought up again. That said, Xie Zhao is NO Jing. He's far more upright and has a spine. lol!
In Lost You Forever Season 1, Episode 5. Why did Xiang Liu leave a kiss mark on Wen Xiaoliu’s neck instead of removing it after biting/sucking her neck to drink her blood? What was the meaning or purpose of the kiss mark?
In Lost You Forever Season 1, Episode 6. Was Xiang Liu acting out of lust when he bit and sucked Wen Xiaoliu’s neck? Xiang Liu wasn't injured at the time but specifically asked to drink Wen Xiaoliu’s blood instead.
In Lost You Forever Season 1, Episode 7-8. Was Xiang Liu jealous every time Wen Xiaoliu was with Ye Shiqi? What was the meaning or purpose of Xiang Liu’s jealousy?
Xiang Liu is 1 leaving his mark that XY is his "man". And a kiss mark is exactly what you think it is.🤭
XL drinks XY blood to heal. BUT XY started to feel a physical sensation to the act, coupled with her crush on him. The only time XL shows list towards XY is when he reliazed that she enjoyed it, during the pool scene where XY was injured.
XL has never shown jealousy towards Jing and XY, and I have never interpreted that particular scene as such. He just find him annoying, and even at times admirable.
I think XL enjoys the blood drinking also, for a variety of reasons. But then there was that one time, where he seemed to resent it.
In Qingshui, I don't think XL ever felt he had something to be jealous of. Afterwards ... there was at least one time where he was NOT happy, when XY told FFB that she had to cancel their outing to visit with Jing. But XL had to be careful about his feelings because of the Lovers Bug, for sure.
Maybe it is just me, but I never felt that XL admired Jing in the drama.
I sometimes get the drama and the novel mixed up quite a bit nowadays, so I don’t actually recall much of XL’s admiration in the drama either—just his annoyance at Jing's privileges. So my sentiment is partly due to the parts in the novel where I felt XL thought Jing was very useful. That always shaped how I interpreted XL’s attitude toward him.
As for the part where XY chose Jing instead of FFB, I’ve never thought of that scene as jealousy. I saw it as much more nuanced, particularly with XY walking back on her promise, which I think is probably the real source of XL’s scorn.
Wishing Tan Jianci a very blessed 36th birthday!
Thanks to his unforgettable performance and love for Xiang Liu, he won over and continues to win over a new wave of fans for one of the most iconic characters even written. And it is very much to his credit that in celebration of his birthday this year, rua娃吧 is launching a new Lost You Forever collab MJD adjustable figurine of Xiang Liu, as well as doing a limited-time return of the 20cm Xiang Liu doll in white (with hair impossible to manage). Come to think of it, I don't recall whether the red-robed Xiang Liu was ever available for purchase...
EDIT: Aside from the 20cm doll, an all new collection of the 10cm dolls (including the red-robed Xiang Liu, the smallest single-piece doll, Shen Yi and Tang Qi) is available for purchase starting 10:05AM today until 5 Nov. The 40cm doll is available as a lucky draw for purchase of RMB45 per draw.
