Asami Mitsuhiko, a travel magazine reporter, was on assignment for a feature titled “Traveling Through Kyoto’s Traditions.” He visited the kiln of Taisho Ryoya, a master of Kyo-yaki pottery, but could not gain attention because his visit coincided with the kiln firing. At that moment, Morohashi Kotoe, the woman who takes care of Taisho, appeared and guided Asami to Shoun-do, a gallery exhibiting Taisho’s works. Shoun-do was also the family home of Morohashi Kotoe’s sister, Itami Kana, who had married into it. At Shoun-do, many of Taisho’s works were on display. Among them was a Koryo celadon vase called Murasaki Shikibu, which Taisho would come to observe whenever he felt uncertain about his own creations. The vase had been made 800 years ago, and its creator was unknown. It was said to contain a vengeful spirit inside, bringing successive misfortunes to anyone who possessed it. Despite this dark reputation, the vase was exquisitely beautiful, displaying colors that no other potter could replicate. (Source: Japanese = TBS || Translation = kisskh) Edit Translation
