Surviving the Tomb, Entering the Lion’s Den: Zang Hai Joins the Scholar Hall

Zang Hai proves his mettle by surviving deadly traps and impressing Marquis Ping Jin with his wisdom. His induction into the Scholar Hall marks a new phase — but it’s clear not everyone welcomes him. Suspicion brews, especially from Zhu Huai Ming, setting the stage for political intrigue and silent rivalries. The tension between admiration and distrust is palpable, and Zang Hai’s sharp mind makes him both a valuable asset and a dangerous enemy.Verdict:A strategic game begins. Zang Hai is not just fighting for survival — he’s playing for power.

Stepping out from the deadly tunnel into a vipers' nest

I liked the whole sequence of getting to the end of the tunnel. Of course ZangHai would make it, otherwise the series would last only 4 episodes, not 40. But I appreciated the humanity of the ML, the effort in the script to give a bit of a backstory even to the smallest of support roles. The tension when having to face Pingjin and the vile people surrounding him... Xiao Zhan did an awesome work with just the slightest micro expressions, and his eyes... Ah, I couldn't wait to see how things would unfold. Also: that eunuch is scary...

Five Stars

This episode was peak suspense. Really enjoyed the mystery solving & adventure touch they added. Really tells its from the tomb raider series. Funniest part is everyone knew that everyone was lying but they all still played along. Politics sure are scary. Can't help to see how this Zanghai ends up becoming the tomb raider one.

Five Stars

Episode 4 was intense and emotionally charged, especially as Zanghai finally escaped the dungeon. The entire escape sequence was gripping—not just because of the physical danger, but because you could feel the psychological weight pressing down on him. What truly elevated the episode for me was the moment Zanghai came face-to-face with his enemy for the first time. That scene was masterfully done. Xiao Zhan’s eye play was absolutely striking—there was a sudden shift in his gaze, from calm and unreadable to sharp and cold, like a blade unsheathed in silence. No dramatic outburst, no grand monologue—just that piercing look that said everything. His expression changed in milliseconds, and you could feel the years of pain and restraint behind it. The tension in that scene didn’t need music or effects—the atmosphere was built entirely on Xiao Zhan’s control of his face and eyes. I was holding my breath during that confrontation, because even though no fight happened yet, you could sense that a reckoning was inevitable. This episode proved again how much strength the show draws from subtle acting and emotional undercurrents. It’s not just what’s said—it’s what’s felt, and Episode 4 delivered that powerfully.

Job with the scholars

After making it through he is then accused of knowing building secrets.😝 This guy is determined to give Zang Hai grief but Zang Hai stays humble and then tells them the dowager will show a sign when it rains. He also told them that he was 100% sure they would have rain that day. He is laughed at but when the eunuch is called in he comments on the freak storm that showed up after a beautiful day. This has the Marquis’ attention. Zang Hai asks to kneel before dowager to ask for blessing while he places a stone under coffin so it will move on the wet surface. The Marquis calls him out for that and is deciding if he is going to kill Zang Hai or not. He escapes this first round and ends up with the scholars to learn building techniques. He was given an audience with the Marquis that was blocked by his supervisor. He is forced into taking a job of sealing the ceiling so that rains won’t destroy the ancestral hall documents. That night Zang Hai tells his old mentor how he missed a prime opportunity but that since it really did storm he couldn’t take blame for damages. Zang Hai recognizes that the supervisor keeps the underlings worthless and steals from the inventory. He is tested a second time when he is left alone with the inventory while everybody else leaves. The supervisor is leaving directions for him to be arrested immediately if anything is amiss. So now to see if he makes Zang Hai the fall guy or if Zang Hai proves him a thief.

Five Stars

Ping Jin Hou is truly despicable, and so are his three henchmen. Every single one of them is utterly vile.

Episode 4 SLAPS!

Turn up the heat! Zang Hai escapes a deadly underground maze set by Marquis Pingjin, and when he finally comes face-to-face with the Marquis, Xiao Zhan absolutely nails it. No over-the-top speeches, just a cold, silent stare packed with years of bottled-up rage. To gain the Marquis's trust, Zang Hai fakes a “dream prophecy” about rain. Everyone laughs… until a sudden storm rolls in. Then he pulls off a clever trick to collapse the Empress Dowager’s coffin and calls it a sign from above. The Marquis’s torn whether to kill him or keep him? Meanwhile, Zang Hai’s already plotting from inside the Marquis’s home, lol!
Now working under a petty boss, Yang Zhen, Zang Hai stays calm, fixes problems, and quietly plans to take over. Underdog energy, but with ancient feng shui vibes.
Xiao Zhan’s acting it's a blast. That deadly stare? Iconic. Some clever writing, Zang Hai earns every win with smarts, not luck.
The episode had some dark vibe, the tomb, the music, the tension, it all hits.
Zang Hai isn’t just surviving waiting for occasions to tace on revenge, he’s outsmarting everyone. This episode cements the drama as a must-watch revenge ride.
P.S. If the Marquis doesn’t die on a Tuesday in all the pains of hell, we riot.

Here We Go

Escaping from the tombs was just the easy step but now he has to deal with this Yang character. Reminds you of how people in power always use those that don't have any and just pass their works as their own to continue their dying careers. And that is exactly what Yang is - a man with no great characteristics but he knows how to steal from those that are smart. I really can't wait to see how Zang Hai outsmarts all of them - which doesn't seem like he will need to do much because they aren't really that smart to begin with. It is quite obvious what their intentions are - not even trying to hide it.
