Season: 1

Yang Zhen has Zang Hai check the Treasury inventory list another time to test him, and, partially, as a punishment for standing out. While there, Zang Hai runs into the Marquis's second son, Zhuang Zhi Xing, who was stealing from the Treasury. Zhi Xing soon kicks Zang Hai out, regardless of his task completion. Zang Hai re-did the inventory list, taking special attention to items the Marquis might take an interest in. For those, he included the object's history and a drawing. With that, he regained the Marquis's attention. The Marquis went so far as to tell Yang Zhen that Zang Hai would be a good person to share his burden one day, inadvertently stoking Yang Zhen's biggest fear. (Source: Italophilia at kisskh)

Inventory Test or Power Play? Zang Hai’s Quiet Defiance Shakes the Court

Zang Hai faces a subtle test from Yang Zhen but turns it into a bold statement by meticulously redoing the Treasury inventory — complete with histories and drawings. His sharp mind wins back Marquis Ping Jin’s favor but deepens the suspicion and fear in Yang Zhen.Meanwhile, an encounter with the Marquis’s rebellious son adds tension and highlights the dangerous power dynamics at play. Zang Hai’s quiet defiance is as sharp as any blade.Verdict:Zang Hai’s rise is as much about brains as it is about bravery. The game of shadows intensifies.

Things are about to happen...

I found this episode really great - not so action packed, as building up for what's to come. It also lets us appreciate how ZangHai deals with foreseeable and unforeseeable things, and how Xiao Zhan is in his element portraying him. Can't wait for the baddies to pay...

No room for emotions: Zang Hai's journey

Zhuang Zhi Xing and Zang Hai could have been good friends in their normal lives. But of course, Zang Hai knows very well that he shouldn't put his feelings into such things because he will get revenge. I hope that this Yang person's cunning plans will lead to his own end

Five Stars

Episode 5 gave me chills from start to finish—it was all about hidden truths, rising tension, and the growing weight Zanghai carries as he steps deeper into the capital’s dangerous web. After his tense encounter in the previous episode, I could see a subtle shift in his demeanor. Zanghai is no longer just observing; now he’s quietly moving the pieces, testing loyalties, and preparing for what’s to come. What stood out most for me was how Xiao Zhan continues to act with such precision—his body is still, his voice calm, but his eyes say everything. There was a particular scene where he silently watched 2nd son of Marquis, and in that moment, his eyes flickered between cold calculation and then smiled—it was absolutely captivating. The plot itself thickens here, as we’re introduced to more players within the palace and political factions, each with their own agenda. Zanghai finds himself walking a fine line, pretending to be someone he’s not while slowly revealing just how dangerous he can be when provoked. The tension is no longer just external—it’s within Zanghai too, and I love how the show lets us feel that without spelling it out. Episode 5 was a quiet storm—strategic, emotional, and full of foreshadowing. You just know something big is coming.

Working against the establishment

Should have known it was the second son stealing from treasury. I wish he would have had more time to check out secret room. It’s also a shame that the son had more spunk and character as a child than when grown. He is on the fast track to useless. 😝Zang Hai was genius with his inventory ledger and knew just how to stroke the Marquis’ ego. It got him attention, but now the three henchmen want to either integrate him into their slimey ways or kill him. He had his chance at the ‘bday’ party for Yang. I am sure he would have figured out a different response to the poor singer had he known what Yang would do. There are special places in hell for the Marquis and his three. Whoever the gal manager is was surprised that Zang Hai would actually care for the welfare of the girl. It proves again that even on revenge path there are depths he won’t go. That speaks well for him, but also as pointed out by his mentor, it shows the no bottom line for this group. Even the son has a play stupid or die outlook for dealing with it. He tried to gain audience with the Marquis through the son but that also met with dead end. He does now know there are secret locations in the hall where only authorized guests can go. His golden time to get closer to Marquis is getting significantly smaller so he needs to find a way to circumvent the gang of three. Noted that Xiao Zhan is gifted with excellent micro expressions. This drama is intense but I am all in to see how he makes these four pay. The bodies keep stacking up and I’m sure he is keeping track of them.

Conniving

Zang Has got his work cut out for him already and now he has these losers just trying to attack him because he is gifted. That is insane. Episode was great but brutal. I am hoping for the downfall of those old men especially what they did to the singer.

Tension, Tricks and Torture

Things are heating up at the Marquis’s place. Zang Hai’s stuck cataloging stolen antiques under Yang Zhen, a petty boss who’s out to ruin him. While working, Zang Hai stumbles on a secret mechanism behind a locked iron door which screams mystery alert! He also catches the Marquis’s wild second son, Zhuang Zhixing, stealing some gold gourd.
Then comes the setup: Yang Zhen hosts a fake banquet that’s really a trap. Drunken schemers, women, and a singer named Xiao Zhi fill the room. When Zang Hai won’t play along, Yang Zhen forces a burning coal into Xiao Zhi’s mouth. Horrifying. Brutal! and it makes you really hate Yang Zhen.
Enters the fierce Zhen Tower mistress, who shuts it all down and makes Zang Hai escort the drunk second son home. It’s messy, dramatic, and dangerous in all the best ways.
Xiao Zhan’s acting pure gold. Calm on the outside, seething underneath. His micro-expressions when facing Yang Zhen’s cruelty was icy calm masking volcanic rage.
There is no filler so far, just high-stakes drama. The claustrophobic treasury scenes and eerie OST keep the vibe crisp. The pacing’s tighter than Zang Hai’s poker face. Zang Hai is now inches closer to Zhuang Luyin via Zhuang Zhixing, the revenge payoff’s gonna be spicy.
TL;DR: Episode 5 serves political chess, moral gray zones, and Xiao Zhan’s “silent but deadly” charisma. Bring popcorn, and maybe a stress ball. we're in for a wild ride!
