fun enough to watch once for Gong Jun's performance
(Updated Dec 2025)So typically I'd want to keep my old review but bc I had written a very short review a few months after watching and I'm in the middle of a rewatch to grab scenes for editing purposes and I am finding the rewatch to be an excruciating experience, I'm just starting from scratch. So, firstly, from a BL perspective, I do have to admit that this is pretty epic in that regard. No, there is no kiss bc censorship, but it is unmistakably gay, there is no denying that WenZhou want each other carnally, they have their family unit w Chengling, there are a lot of good scenes demonstrating how deeply devoted they are to each other (i.e. Wen Kexing's willingness to die for Zhou Zishu, Zhou Zishu unwilling to let Wen Kexing die for him; and also the reverse). So if that is the only thing you care about when deciding whether to watch or skip, it's definitely one of the gayest CDramas.
As I said in the headline, Gong Jun's performance is literally the reason the show is as enjoyable as it is. Wen Kexing is a brilliantly written character and he is exceptional in the role. I'm becoming even more enamored with his performance with the rewatch because there are all these little nuances that you can easily miss if you don't know Wen Kexing's backstory. Wen Kexing is smart and strategic, he's been through The Horrors™️but still remains kind-hearted (mostly... if he views you as an enemy, he is Brutal and you are done for), he's fiercely protective of those he cares about and will do anything for that select group of people. Like truly one of the all-time characters, one of the all-time performances. Cannot applaud Gong Jun enough for his work here.
Now onto the negatives...
In my prior review I said that I thought the armory plot was "kind of boring" and this time around I find it unbelievably aggravating. Like wow I have to watch 5 dozen people I despise fight over this stupid key to the armory for a stockpile of weapons (allegedly). I hate basically everyone from the Five Lakes Alliance, I hate everyone from the Scorpion Sect, I hate the majority of the people from Ghost Valley (Luo Fumeng, Liu Qianqiao, Gu Xiang, and of course Wen Kexing you are all beloved and exempt), I hate that old wandering couple, etc etc. Watching terrible people at each other's throats is only fun when it's peripheral, if that is the main story, I just want to blow everyone up. Not involved w the armory nonsense, but I must say it for my own peace: I also hate Ye Baiyi who is seemingly around primarily for comedic relief by being "rude" but I just want to tear his throat out with my teeth every time he opens his mouth.
What I was completely unprepared for with this rewatch, though, was to realize that I hate Zhou Zishu. Like. Oh, he created the torture method that slowly kills members of Window from Heaven if they want to leave. He acts all self-righteous and morally superior when we literally see a flashback that heavily implies he killed a child who was begging him for help after he participated in massacring her family(/village???). The way he "trains" Chengling after finally accepting him as a disciple is straight up child abuse. His shitty mentality of "men don't cry" and constantly pushing this toxic masculinity bullshit (which, to be somewhat fair, is not exclusive to ZZS in this show, but, y'know, as he is the protagonist who we are supposed to view as the moral center... boy it's infuriating!) Like I remembered the first episode being a really unsympathetic set up for him, but I also remembered he had grown a lot on me by the end and I am truly at a loss for how I felt that way the first time. Like... was I just so euphoric about how gay this show was that I had my eyes closed to everything else??????
In my prior review I also said that I felt the final 2 episodes turned unnecessarily tragic and that the ending felt fumbled. Like I don't want to get into huge spoilers (I try not to spoil anything from the last third in my reviews), but basically there's a massacre that feels like the equivalent of the Burial Mounds massacre in The Untamed... except it happens in the penultimate episode so there's no justice, there's no resolution to the horrors that you were just subjected to. It's just like "oh you thought these characters were going to be happy? HAHAHAHA NOPE." FOR WHAT REASON???????? Other than killing off fan favorite characters for Wen Kexing's angst, like literally there is no f*cking purpose for this?????? And then the character who facilitated the massacre doesn't face any consequences??????? What the hell??????????? How are we supposed to feel satisfied at the end when it feels like no one cares about all those deaths for more than 5 minutes?????
Anyway, watch Blood River, it does basically everything that Word of Honor does except better!

hmmm
Not really a BL fan, but acting wise it was superb, from main leads to side characters. I’ll have to admit I skipped a lot of parts, and mainly focused on Zhou Ye, it was so tragic on her end :(Have a soft spot for Gong Jun since I really liked him on Begin Again, but I was really here for my baby girl Zhou Ye, I can’t wait for her upcoming series (Legend of the Female General) with Ryan Cheng.
Aside from her pure, clear, vibrant beauty, she’s really talented not annoying, I barely have biases on female actrssses but so far, South Korea: Bae Suzy, Japan: Suzu Hirose, China: Zhou Ye those are my 3 baby girls so far!

A Masterpiece of Soulmates and Redemption
The Premise: Two Souls on the Edge of LifeAlong with The Untamed, this is one of the only "legit" historical bromance dramas that captures the true essence of soulmates. The story follows Zhou Zishu, a former assassin leader who has chosen a slow death just to be free, and Wen Kexing, the mysterious and flamboyant Master of the Ghost Valley. When their paths cross, they find themselves protecting an orphaned boy and unraveling a massive conspiracy in the martial arts world.
The Dynamics: Opposite Poles, One Soul
The relationship between the leads is the heart of the show.
The "Talkative" and the "Silent": Wen Kexing is charming, talkative, and constantly teasing, while Zhou Zishu is more reserved and talkative in his silence. Despite their opposite personalities, they share a deep understanding that transcends words.
Redemption: Both characters have dark, tragic pasts. They aren't just partners; they are each other’s "saving grace." They help each other move forward from their trauma and find a reason to live again.
The Found Family: I loved how they took in Zhang Chengling as their disciple. He became the "one and only" student to carry on their teachings, allowing their legacy to live on through him.
The Emotional Toll: Sacrifice and Loss
This drama doesn't shy away from pain.
Gu Xiang’s Tragedy: My heart broke for Gu Xiang, the lively "younger sister" figure to Wen Kexing. Her death at the end felt incredibly cruel because she had just found her own happiness. It was a heavy price to pay in their fight for the righteous.
Standing for Justice: Despite their backgrounds as a "Ghost" and an "Assassin," they choose to stand for what is right in a world filled with hypocritical "righteous" sects.
The Finale: A Happy Note in the Mountains
The ending is iconic.
The White Hair: Seeing the hair change to white was a powerful symbol of the extreme sacrifice made for love and cultivation. It marked the end of their mortal struggles.
The "Happy Ending": I am so glad they ended it on a happy note. In the special epilogue, seeing them live together in the snowy mountains, eternal and at peace, was the perfect conclusion for two people who suffered so much.
Final Verdict
Word of Honor is a poetic, visually stunning, and emotionally deep journey. If you love the "Soulmate" trope and high-stakes Wuxia action, this is essential viewing. It’s a story about choosing life over revenge and finding home in another person.

Far better than expected. Can't take my eyes off the fight scenes & interactions with the male leads
This is my first review I'm leaving for a Chinese drama....and my oh my, I did not expect to write this. Like at all. I thought this show was rly dry but NOW I'M OBSESSED(Spoilers only for ep.1)
(Also I'm a drama noob so this isn't speaking so much from experience but more so from an enjoyment factor)
At first, I put this on as background noise whilst focusing on my uni work, and the first episode sure didn't sell me. I barely glanced at it no more than 5 times, until our MC started putting on his face disguise, which I was like Oh, that's pretty neat. But before that, nothing rly interested me. I told my friend who asked that it was boring. LOL HOW WRONG I WAS
I had no idea what was happening but by episode 3 I was definitely not doing my uni work anymore. The two male leads completely got me absorbed and the acting is actually really mesmerising. Ep 1 and 2's CG was pretty subpar and had a few questionable moments but the fighting choreography from Ep 3 and onwards was surprisingly great and well shot, dynamic and just super cool. And it only got better and better, as soon as the show moved onto the two male leads (literally by the end of Ep.2 it's all about them) I was watching 80% netflix and 20% work....and now at Ep. 10 I've completely given up the concept of getting any work done whatsoever whilst I have this on 🤡🤡🤣😩 It's brilliant. It's actually brilliant.
And I may have just spoiled myself big time because I decided to go back and properly watch Episode 1 to finally understand the entire premise and plot of the show.... Let's just say my jaw is on the floor right now and I'm writing this review cause goddamn this just took the entire thing to the next level.... Maybe for me it's a bit more on the shock factor since I had no clue of the identity of either male leads for 10 frigging episodes 😂😂 and just after learning one backstory I think I realised who the second male lead is and I really can't cope 😂😭
All in all it's just getting so good and I was so wrong about this show. The first episode is actually good too, it's just that I didn't care enough to pay attention 🤡 Now I know what a dumb move that was. Excited to finish Episode 10 and follow along the growing plot. It has solid world-building and dynamics, sure lots of generic tropes but all in all super interesting and I can say I'm totally hooked 😂👏
Loving the 'eye acting' of the 'second' lead Gong Jun, like the ever so subtle wavering of his eyes conveys volumes and I replayed it a few times. Great eye expressions 👍 and Zhang ZheHan is a cutie lolol he lowkey looks similar to my ult. bias Mark Lee from NCT haha
The music could defo be worked on, the first ending song is rly 🙃 Not it, but I'm enjoying the main theme/the opening.
DEFINITELY WORTH A REWATCH. In fact I'll be re-watching the entire thing once I finish it 😌

The justice is the truth word of honor
Fantastic story and wonderfull characters full of grace thanks to actors with great potentials. Specially Gong jun with his best acting till now. The show is closed to be stolen by his marvelous acting. Zhang zhe han its very good actor too,his character of Zhou Zi Shu is the counterpart of Wen Ke Xing and Both characters complement each other perfectly well. The chemistry was palpable from the first minute they both shared the scene. Scorpion king was a very complex and enigmatic character as well and very magnetic too. The script was always interesting and not at all predictable. It always amazed me. This is something to be appreciated since in the world of drama there is already a lot said and done and concepts or ideas are almost always repeated, but this is not the case in Word of honor, and it has fascinated me. It is a drama with a story well told and performed with all the casting performance. You can tell that it has been created with all the love from the team and actors. The Ost more than correct, quite emotional and very in line with the story and the feeling that the drama conveyed. Was this review helpful to you?
Worth waiting for.
After 4 episodes, so far this drama didnt fail me. The storyline I didnt give a full 10, reason being still early to judge. But music, and actors acting skill full score. Cannot deny both the MLs are very good actors. Worth waiting for it to be aired. Comments before it aired, this is a BL drama. After 4 episodes, my point of view, this is more to a brother/friend kind. I think this should be ok unless it crossed the "line". Nowadays there are a lot of BL kind of drama but it depends on the level of it. Here, would like to give a thumbs up to the martial art crew, director as well, very well and beautifully done. Was this review helpful to you?

My first BL drama
This is my first BL drama & I love it.... <3. The chemistry between gong jun & Zhang Zhe Han is really spot on. Really like the interaction between Zhou Zi Shu (A Xu (AX)) & Wen Ke Xing (Lao wen (LW). I think this is the first time i wanna scream to my TV, "kiss kiss kiss..." in several scene. Haha. Because one thing for sure there will not gonna be kissing scene in this drama... :DWhat i like about costume kung fu drama like this is we can see how hypocritical people really are. In the end yeah sometimes the 'good people' is worse than the 'bad people'.
This is also, for me, the first drama that have so many secret within until there are many video explained about it in YouTube, I especially really like the explanation by 'Ty the Canasian'. Many hidden secret....
Really like the story & development of all the character here. Like ChineseDramaFan wrote, AX, LW & Zhang Cheng Ling (CL) 'When they meet, they become a family, watching out for each other.' They all have their own problem , but together they became family.
Ok lets talk about our cast.
- AX from indifferent people, who already doesn't care about everything else just wait for died, to finding someone that he care about.
- LW from full of hatred to be able to let go his ambition a little bit.
- CL from the naïve boy to find role model & be able to learn how to follow his heart.
- Cao Wei Ning (WN), really like how WN still a naïve man that really can keep his promise to AX
- Gu Xiang (AX) AX from 'the ghost' that only know about killing can learn what is love & touch by WN determination.
This drama makes me to like Gong Jun even more. So far I already watch him play as arrogant man (unique lady), quiet guy ( unrequired love) & in here he as flamboyant & flirty man. Really looking forward what character can he play next...
Ok. Let's talk about that soundtrack. Love some of the song, but there is some song that have annoyed voice for me, I guess that sang by Gong Jun, not love the voice ^_^.
Overall: like everybody write here & like I already write above, this drama really have many hidden secret. Because we know china is very strict with this kind of drama (BL drama). But this drama really good at hiding it so it can pass censorship. But yeah this one good drama with every cast have perfect chemistry with each other.

Amazing drama! Loved it sooooooo much!
The first few episodes were just okay but then it suddenly got sooo much better. I loved the character development, the plot and the Music. Just everthing this drama had was excellent. Its definitely worth watching.First of all, the Opening song was a Masterpiece. When i now listen to it i get goose bumbs because it reminds me of all the stuff that happens in this drama.
Secondly, the character development really got me. The way the characters changed throughout the story was just beautiful to see.
And it was easy to feel with the characters and to understand their actions. I really love something like that in a story.
And even if the story started slow, when you look at it in the end it makes sense.

Not That Kinda Cheap Movies
I have watched up to ep 8. Still pretty exciting to know what's gonna happen next. ZZH and GJ are pretty good in building the chemistry slowly. The CGI is very good and it's really my kinda genre. Fighting scenes and executed professionally and very high tech. I'm tempted to read the novel and compare it to the film adaption. Due to strict censorship in China, the producer might have worked really hard to maneuver the storyline to avoid getting censored. The female lead also very good looking, her acting is also very natural. GJ switched his emotion which we can notice from his facial expression. ZZH as always, stern and poise but in this show, he is more relax than his other series. Was this review helpful to you?
WOH is The best Wuxia ever
I love all about Word Of Honor .. love the story, acting, ost & I love the both actor Zhang Zhe Han & Gong Jun ❤️❤️ They are very handsome & talented. The best Wuxia ever !Though it's only 13 episodes I have watched until now but The story is very beautiful, and the actor Simon Gong's acting skill totally cool ! And his expressions ohh my God ! And when they flirting expression very cute .. There are a lot of fun elements. The audiance will eventually laugh and get along with it. Zhang Zehan acting as Zhou Zi Shu very good , he is cold but sometimes very cute.
I love this drama ! They are updating 1 episode per day with sub .. i almost die to wait 😭 hopefully everything goes well untill end of episode.

could've been epic
1. a series like this would mainly be targeted towards male viewers.... there's kung fu... secret treasure manuscripts.... etc. why the F do these producers cast flower boys? who the hell would believe these skinny weak ass flower boys have any Kung Fu skills at all? 2 billion people in China and they can't find the new jet li's... Jacky chains.... Donnie yens?2. a guy will never ever never ever call another guy his "soul mate"...... I thought only Hollywood was injecting LGBTQ into every TV series
