Hooked on Xianxia!
I absolutely loved this Xianxia. The acting was supreme! I have seen most of these actors in other dramas and xianxias. Glad to see so many of them together. Xu Kai, Liu Xue Yi, Leon Lia, Zhou Dong You and many, many, more are great actors.The music was fantastic. The story line went along very smooth. I am not going to say anything about the whole story line, because I want you to watch it for yourself, and enjoy every bit of it. One thing I will say you must pay close attention to the beginning first 4 episodes. I have watched this more than once and I am still fascinated at some of the things that I somehow missed the first 2 times I watched it! Also the Anime is very beautiful. I think that this is a must watch Xianxia!

Good Xianxia Drama
It gave me TMOPB vibes. The ML was phenomenal. The chemistry between ML and FL was good. The cast in general did a great job. The storyline was interesting. The plot development was good and tbe CGI isn't too bad. I didnt skip any part of the drama. I would've liked to see FL take care of / show more concern for their son after ML died and she got her memories back ( seeing that the son supposedly looked exactly like the father at that age). Even when ML came back in the end the son was not around. Overall it was a good watch.Was this review helpful to you?

The ending ruined everything

Killing/sacrificing Bai Jue and Shang Gu's reincarnations was a shitty move.
[the reincarnations love story was also much better than the actual couple's]
2. Bai Jue's denying of his love for Shang Gu was supposed to protect her but even after seeing how much it hurt her, he continued.
3. The ending meant that Bai Jue's ''sacrifices'' weren't actually sacrifices and made the whole story useless.

Okay but not Great!
Some of the settings reminded me of Ten Miles & Ashes of Love. Some of the settings, Ancient Love is better but some environment like the palace, demon realm etc i prefer Ashes of Love. Power effect, fighting skills, outfits i prefer Ashes of Love.When i first watched it i didnt like the female lead for Shanggu. She is afterall the God of Chaos/Chief God, ideally she should look the part. Wu Huan looked more suitable to be the God of Chaos.
Bai Jue is known to be COLD, ignored all females but he developed a little feeling for Shanggu at Ep2. BORING. Too Soon and Too Easy for someone who ignored all females for a long time.
Storyline could be interesting but went off along the way.
Shanggu sacrificed herself to stop the Tribulation of Chaos but it was still on hence Bai Jue's "elaborate" plan to take over Power of Chaos in order to save Shanggu from the next tribulation.
I have a hard time looking at Shanggu romancing with Bai Jue because no offence its like looking at a brother confessing romantic love to his little sister. I feel yek.
It was also boring that a powerful being with the Power of Chaos doesn't show her power much. Finally when she managed to trained and successfully gotten stronger, i was like YESSS then she sacrificed herself and back to square one, a weak Houchi. Even after she absorb the spiritual energy of Pilgrimage Hall, she still did now show much potential. It was boring watching her character. Her acting is good but when shes with Bai Jue, shes the eager beaver smiling playfully like a child. Again to me this is not suitable for God of Chaos, maybe in the beginning but eventually needs to be developed.
She causes trouble trying to do big things but with no capability and ended up causing more harm than good and people have to save her (exp, collecting the 3 relic to help Boxuan).
Gu Jun is impressive, i wish to see more of him in action. His presence, the way he speak, the fear he instill is wow. He is more suited to be the Heaven King instead of weak Muguang.
Tianqi could be impressive but turns out quite disappointing. He could do a lot of interesting damage but hes too busy going around chasing after Shanggu who doesnt want him.
When Tianqi and Yuanqi are together, both of them bantering are so cute.
Wu Huan is pure evil, power hungry and her defeat was somewhat unsatisfying, I would say too easy. Her punishment also somewhat unsatisfying and am also wondering why Jingzhao is allowed to run around free even though she poisoned Bai Jue.
I wouldnt say nono to this series but do watch it, maybe you'll like it more than i do. As for rewatch value definitely no no for me, I cant bare to look at a brother romancing his little sister all over again.

Loud Music ruined the whole drama experience
The story is typical of xianxia drama, humanized gods that has all the flaws and emotions of humans. ML (Xu Kai) had a tough role with so many sad scenes to shoot, and did an excellent job carrying the audience through the whole story. FL was also a great actor. CGI were a bit cheap looking but sufficient. Ending took its time in the last 3 episodes to close the major storylines - this saved the story.Here comes the Cons :
1. Music - horrendous and ruins the whole thing - at least half the show has some kind of loud singing music going on, overpowering actor's voices and ruins the scene. I had to mute through all the loud music to get through the show, and resort to watching the closed caption dialogue because it's honestly torture. I'd rate the music at -10 if I could.
2. Main Villain - was known early on the show and continued to do bad deeds, with the all knowing gods either too dumb to notice, or unable to find out, or did nothing - till the very end.
3. Pacing - the middle 1/3 of the series got slow and boring
Overall, the loud singing music throughout the show ruined my watching experience. Without the music, I'd rate it 8.0. With the music, rate it at 5.0 - and it's for all the good acting and hard work of the actors alone. No rewatch value.

A beautiful ending for this couple
A very exciting drama, a story that catches you little by little, a gorgeous love, full of many problems.From the beginning to the end, a story that will trap you, full of emotions, of an almost impossible love.
What will happen at the end of this story, can they be together, or will they have to wait years to see each other again?

I hate it when you put a female as the main lead and give her little significance
I hate it that the chief God is a female and she is given less importance in terms of what she does other than just being a receiver of benefits just because it’s a she …let’s write or direct the storyline to really give her the equalityKind of happy when I saw the first few episodes when she dies for the people but then after that it’s all about her man who is continuously sacrificing till the end with absolutely nothing for her….also it becomes awful when she being a chief God making statements and puts a sword on him just because he irritates her while she would continuously pardon the villains but not think even a bit before piercing a sword in her husband or ex lover or whatever…. It just does not fit the chief God profile. It’s more awkward when it’s a women as I definitely don’t want to see a female being powerful but only in the name and title and no real action from her….the weightage for bai jue is too high as he somehow miraculously does not bother about the people and want to die for her … especially when they have a kid…true god position is not a joke ….as even a regular man will think about the kid before sacrificing or insulting kid for the women ….child comes first before any of the parents ..somehow this smart author misses the boat
Most of the other parts of the story is very good as it kept me watching till the end when I was wondering why it’s 49 episodes…I wish the director could have done more for her part instead of bai Jue sacrificing forever….
Also when they brought most of the gods back alive, they could have brought yuemi back and make demon god happy as well at the end…

im glad i give this drama a try
i wrote this review after re-watching the drama in 2025. this drama, despite being aired 4 years ago, the CGI are much better than most 2025 costume cdramas that currently airing. the production really not stingy on budget.the storyline is a bit cliche in the beginning. about a naughty rebellious FL meeting a cold charismatic ML, them in master-disciple relationship and slowly attracted to each other, cliche right? but who doesnt love cliches in dramas lol.
if u dont like the cliches, please dont stop watching.. the plot is getting interesting after that. they went through 3 lives (sort of) in this story. if i have to choose, their 2nd life as qingmu and houchi is my favorite. the ML is less cold, a bit playful, persistant in pursuing his love and good communication between the two.
the production is not stingy at all.
i love the cinematography, the props, the costumes, the CGI, the music. the bamboo house (the one that look like mushrooms) is so beautiful. the music is so addicting. the CGI is really good.
about the actors.
at first, like everyone else, i was skeptical about ZDY in costume drama. she is a great actress with lots of successful projects under her belt, but she is a newbie in costume dramas. but she did really well as shanggu and houchi. both her characters in this drama are not much different, so to an award-winning actress, i think it is not challenging enough for her.
XK is not unfamilliar in costume dramas. i have nothing much to say about his performace coz he did great in bringing two characters with different demeanor to life. you can see the differences between baijue and qingmu despite the same face.
LXY as tianqi.. oh god i love him so much. my sweet little potato, how i wish i can comfort him. he is the reason why i didnt watch moonlight mystique (yet). coz they used different actor as tianqi. maybe i'll give it a try later, but not now.
overall, the drama is good. im glad i watched it till the end despite the critics, skepticals, and the cliche plot at the beginning lol. go watch it now, recommended.

I'm not really into this kind of Genre but Ancient Love Poetry makes me like it.. After watching this for many times , I tried to move on and watch other dramas but I ended up watching it again not just once but 10 times more .Casts were perfectly chosen.
Acting were all so damn good
BaiJue and Shanggu love for each other makes me want to love again .LMAO
People who criticized this drama specially the FM y'all are so dumb! If you don't watch this drama, You will miss the half of your life 😅

one of the best underrated xianxia.
honestly, years ago I did try went into this show but it was boring. and, heard about people said it was boring and also the criticisms about the actress’ looks.went into it again few days ago, and by ep3 I was already quite interested to proceed. as episodes went by, I was quite amazed by how I didn’t even fast forward any single scenes until the end. compared to other xianxia I’ve watched, many were unnecessary filler scenes or misunderstandings that keeps piling up just to torture the viewing experience.
story
while many think first arc was boring, it was the base to understand the characters and while they solidify the main characters, the supporting characters were good too. then second arc, my fav arc, my fav couple. and those side couples didn’t disappoint too. I love Qingmu & Houchi. their love was much deeper compared to BJ&SG. things they do for each other and things they went through together. and that’s why the scene she stabbed him, it was really heartbreaking and sad. all those feelings, both side carried. ugh, my tears.
one thing I wish to praise is the villain. it was not those one dimensional villain. but a villain that stem from somewhere relatable in human nature. Wu Huan reminded me so much of Jin Guangyao from untamed. and to show how she grew from being a maid, to the ultimate villain and her downfall. it was just amazing journey.
acting
this is my 2nd XK’s drama. he’s good here as usual. sad boy is his forte tbh.
Zhou Dongyu. can I say this girl is amazing? like really. apart from some scenes where she smiled too much until I thought she did bloopers or something. her acting is damn solid. her smiles were really sweet, her crying scenes were heartbreaking.
OST
Ugh, this drama has one of best range of OST. Mao buyi, Ah Lin… just wonderful.
CGI
my previous drama was Shenli. while it was good, ALP was one level higher. it’s much big scale. see those dragons, qiongqi, Kylin etc it shows a lot.
ALP is one of the best xianxia I’ve seen. while following tropes here and there, what I appreciate here was the storytelling and believable characters. they don’t waste on any scenes and that is already one of contributing factor of a good production.
