Set in the Sengoku Period. Retired from ninja duty, Torakage lives a peaceful life in a small village with his wife and son. One day, Torakage’s son is kidnapped by his former master in an attempt to force him to break into a nearby castle and steal the Gold Scroll, the counterpart to her Silver Scroll, the two of which when brought together point the way to a vast treasure. Having no choice, Torakage and his wife sneak into the castle. However, their plan goes awry and the two are caught and turned over to the evil lord. Now, with his wife a hostage of the lord, Torakage must bring him the Silver Scroll held by his former master or forfeit her life! Utilizing weaponry crafted by an eccentric inventor, Torakage takes on both sides and plays them and their ninja armies off each other in the hope of saving his family.
In nineteenth century China, two girls named Snow Flower and Lily are forever bonded together as sworn sisters. They are paired as laotong by a matchmaker who is also responsible for arranging their marriages. They are isolated by their families and communicate by writing in a secret sisterly language, Nü shu (a historical practice in China in that period) on a unique Chinese fan that Snow Flower possesses. In the present day Shanghai, their descendants Sophia Liao and Nina Wei struggle with the intimacy of their own pure and intense childhood friendship. As teenagers, Sophia and Nina were introduced to the idea of laotong, and they signed a traditional laotong contract on the cover of Canto-pop Faye Wong's album Fu Zao (Restless in English). Eventually they are separated but come together again when Sophia falls into a coma after being struck by a taxi while cycling. Reunited at long last, they must come to understand the story of the strong and close ancestral connection hidden from them in the folds of the antique white silk fan or lose one another forever in the process.
In 1867, Sin Jae Hyo leads the Dongrijungsa, which teaches pansori (traditional Korean musical storytelling). A young girl, Chae Seon, who wants to perform pansori, appears in front of him. Chae Seon has dreamed of performing pansori since she first heard Sin Jae Hyo perform when she was little, but Sin Jae Hyo turns her down because women are not allowed to perform pansori. Chae Seon then disguises herself as a man and enters the Dongrijungsa to learn pansori, but Sin Jae Hyo doesn’t accept her as his student. One day, he hears Daewongun, the most powerful man in Joseon and the father of the King, is going to hold a national competition of pansori performers known as “Naksungyeon”. Sin Jae Hyo decides to teach Chae Seon, who has a true voice to perform “Chunhyangga". If anyone finds out that Chae Seon is a woman, Sin Jae Hyo and Chae Seon will both face death

859 AD. The once-great Tang Dynasty is now declining. Numerous rebel groups have formed, the largest of which is the House of Flying Daggers, based in Feng Tian county. They steal from the rich and give to the poor, gaining the support of people. The local deputies have managed to kill their former leader, but the rebel group only becomes stronger, due to a mysterious new one. Jin and Liu, two police captains, are ordered to kill the new leader within ten days.
