Such.a.mess.

OVERALL
This drama is the biggest false advertisement I've ever seen in a Kdrama, and the worst thing is, I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentional. Watch it if you're very bored and very desperate, with no better alternative in sight. In any other case, skip.

THE STORY
I wasn't particularly into this drama based on the synopsis so I waited a long time to give it a try. When I finally did, the first episode intrigued me. It looked like it was going to be a serious, mature romance story, following two people who don't believe in long-term relationships. That's totally NOT what the drama turned out to be about. It ended up being a very classic, very tedious melodrama about two people with a bad kind of past connection who fall in love but face a whole bunch of opposition. And even then, I give it more credit than I should, because the drama tends to forget what it's about, especially in the few last episodes. Basically, it's a hot mess.

Besides an unclear plot, the problem of this drama is that there's really not much to make you care about it. After 4-5 episodes the show stops trying to sell the romance so it just falls flat. There's no cuteness, no deep emotions, no skinship, NOTHING. In the melodrama department, you're served every single cliché melodrama trope, but most of them end up not really resolved properly so it all feels like a waste of time. And the characters are poorly written, with zero development, so you don't care much about them either. And towards the end, they start making decisions that don't make sense at all, especially Yeong Eun. Like I said, a hot mess. Do yourself a favor, skip.

THE ACTING
Good, but that's not enough to save this drama. No chemistry between the leads though.

THE MUSIC
Ok, so here I have to give the drama props just because of the song "Stay" by Car, The Garden, which I fell in love with. But now that you know about it, you can just go ahead and Spotify it, and save yourself the trouble of watching the drama. You're welcome!

REWATCH VALUE
Null.

A drama is someone's soul in which they have invested their passion in, ( my opinion)

I won't say weather the actors didn't have good chemistry or they acted nicely, but what i will say is that this drama touched my heart, not the love or fate between the actors but rather their fears, uncertainties and regrets, and i assure you watching this may just make you feel like, life is short; let's be reckless :)

K dramas are not meant to be realistic, but of all I have watched this makes me feel the heartache and self doubt the most.
the actors might not have shown enough love but they performed the rest of their roles wonderfully, the desire, regret, instability and passion were all crystal clear.

As a drama idk if its good or not but as a work of art that resonates with me, i have to say its amazing.

WTF was that?!

Disclaimer - massive Song and Jang’s fan. However!
WTF was that - I can swear the story each episode have the same back bone - reminiscence, some very artificial urgency in the company, followed by some small drama, his dead brother gf fit, followed by his mum or her mum fit, back to the couple, and the episodes generally finish with them reminiscence.

The story doesn’t have any warmth for me. Mature romance have more, if not less, strength, in this drama all this was lost. The story kept weaving and shifting not being able to find its path.

And, this must be the worst Song’s performance so far - I was ready to forgive her in the first few episodes, but it never improved. I didn’t feel any chemistry between the two - the magazine photo shoots they did have more charm than the 12 episodes I watched.
Was Jang intimidated by Song? It felt to me like he is holding back..acting is definitely the art of acting off someone and Song didn’t give him much to work with.

However, not all is lost - the story of Hwang Chi Sook was so well told, Kim Jojo Heon and Choi Hee Seo did a fantastic job:-) I’m dragging ep12, because I lost any desire to watch it, more of the same...shame really, as it’s visually beautifully shot (clothing, styling), even the OST is okay..

Such a shame!

Now We Are Breaking Up Must watched

Now We Are Breaking Up is such a wonderful drama.. love Song Hye Kyo on how she played HaYoung Eun. The drama touched almost all aspects of life, the ladder one needs to climb to reach your goal yet complications still there. Breaking up to someone doesn't necessarily mean you don't love the person but you are also taking a lot of considerations. Tough love yet shows compassion.. it's a realization too about life.. the lines so spot on many can relate. After episode 16 I will surely watch it again and again and again..

It made me fall in love and then broke my heart just like my ex/ Only one time watch type of a drama

Well, this drama started great.
Loved the first few episodes and I was so hyped for the rest. I couldn't wait for it to air. But, then as the episodes went by, my interest sank lower and lower. I have no idea if my expectation were to high or the drama was getting boring and predictable.
Considering that now we are half way through, I think I can share my opinion on this drama.

LOVED that this was no love story of teens, but more mature one, and the story was quite intriguing. The actors are stunning and I really like the couples. The side characters are alright. As I said, as the story went on, I could've easily guess where it was heading. The stupid writing sometimes was just too predictable. It's been a while since we had a drama revolving around the fashion world and I really liked that. At the beginning I literally feel in love with the story but then It just broke my heart just like my ex. Meaning that you'll get easily hooked and then after a while you'll get disappointed.
That's how I felt with this drama, great start but somehow we are getting to a weak ending. It just lost me.
Again great actors and all but very weak writing at some points. Not gonna spoil the story because I never do in any of my reviews but it just left me disappointed. I will finish this one and probably never watch it again. Not worth it really

Total disappointment as I had high expectations

Bad acting, bad story, bad FL casting.
Feel cheated as had high expectations for a romantic drama with sizzling chemistry and a good storyline from the screenwriter known for sweet slow dramas.
First the storyline lacked logic and characterisations not done well. Especially the FL wasting 10years on a fling she had abroad for just two months and all people around acting mad around it that too after 10 years.
Should have had better cast. Zero chemistry between main leads. Song Hye Kyo couldn’t do justice to the role.
Jang ki Yong was the only saving grace.

Wasted chemistry o a terrible story

I'm getting fed up with with Song Hye Kyo always playing the stoic blank face girl boss who can't catch a break, her life is work and pain. She plays it well and I usually love her series, but it's just too much at this point. They did not do her justice with the hair styling, makeup or wardrobe, it's like they wanted to turn her into an ajumma.

She had a lot of chemistry with JKY, but it was killed over and over by the melodrama. Such a waste. God, the amount of deus ex machina, coincidences, lies, trauma was so too over the top even for a Kdrama, it felt more like one of those Turkish telenovelas my mom watches.

Why is it so often that when we get a noona romance things have to turn so melodramatic and forced? Just because the FL is 40 and the ML is younger it doesn't mean you have to kill the passion and at least occasional fun. I just wanted to see more of the FL and ML's relationship and them being happy and we got so much screentime of work stuff and secondary characters I couldn't care less about.

In love with Jang Ki-yong but not with Yoon Jae Gook

I watched this entire series just for Jang Ki-Yong. I fell in love with his smile in My Roomate is Gumiho and the chemistry he had with female lead in MRIG... but I was in for shock when I saw the first episode .. especially the love making scene... compare it with the My Roomate is Gumiho love making scene.. There was so much of chemistry between the actors in MRIG but in Now am breaking up there was not even an ounce of chemistry between the actors.. Don't even get me started with the storyline and female lead's character. I got so annoyed with her. What did the male lead see in her to be so attracted to her and fall in love with her. At all points I felt bad for male lead as he was trying to do everything to save the relationship but she was trying to find all the excuses to break up with him.
If you want to waste you time and energy watch this... sometimes if the main leads were replaced it would have worked a bit ... dont know ... we will never know...

May be they should have casted someone who can act and show some expressions. It's about time to encourage new talent rather than running after veterans who have shown zero variation in characters they have chosen.

Also i dont understand why they chose an younger looking male lead when the story doesn't demand so!.

Couldn't even watch past 4 episodes.

Don't even get me started on the French lines 😐. If the actors can't even say a few lines in a foreign language i dont know what kind of commitment/dedication they are showing to their work.

Unsure of ending or purpose of plot

I watched this entire series hoping for redemption…a happy ending where the lead actors would become adults and stand up to their parents and live an happy life together. What we got was some vague goofy smiles on a bridge and a message of “It was good enough we had a few months together and that’s enough to last a lifetime.” What a crock.

I’ve spent some time in Busan and the Hyatt where the love affair began so it was nice recognizing the scenery but this was not enough to redeem such a badly written drama.

The good: Support characters including her needy friend played by Choi Hee Seo, Sehun, even her sick girlfriend were pretty good to watch.
The bad.: the leads had NO chemistry. No amount of lust/love between Song Hye Kyo and Jang Ki Yong. SHK has this waxy persona unconvincing as a person of deep feeling and connection. JKY tried his best with a weak script. His thousand watt smile can temporarily hypnotize you. But not long enough to like the series.
EVERY PARENT IS EVIL, SELFISH, DOMINATING and expects their children to live for them. I hated every one of them and button mashed the fast forward while yelling DIE!

I was glad this is finally over. I am still I am not sure why I watched it until the end except I must have had a spell cast over me. Probably JKYs smile. Such a train wreck of a series.

Purple Heart to Anyone Who Makes It Through This Drama...

Woah...I was very excited to come across this drama as I am a big fan of Jang Ki Yong since I'd seen him in the amazing drama The Atypical Family...and I wish I could have individual rated the actors instead of rating just the overall acting as he ABSOLUTELY carried this drama...
I was also interested to see Song Hye Kyo again. I really liked her in Encounter but just finished Descendants Of The Sun and did not like her portrayal of her character in that drama, so I was interested to see what my take was on her in this drama...and watching Now We Are Breaking Up my first thought was she played exactly the same cold fish character as she did in Descendants just in a change of costume...she had one expression throughout and was basically an emotional wasteland....There were so many times in this drama I wanted to slap her upside the head to get any kind of reaction out of her! I believe it was in Episode 13 when she finally, without prompting actually initiated a hug with a character...woah! Before Episode 13 she usually stood to the side and observed during all sorts of highly emotional moments...definitely came off as a bystander in the story as opposed to a participant. Plus, I thought I was gonna die every time she entered a scene as they dressed her like a 50 year old matron, and she was supposed to be a sought after high fashion designer? I would pray at every costume change or next day that she'd show up in something actually fashionable...but to no avail.
I was also disappointed with the somewhat muddled ending...as it leaves you hanging, but in actuality I really didn't give a FF about the end...I really just wanted to scream at the screen for him to RUN AWAY when they approached each other years later. I would so have preferred he'd have found someone with some emotional depth who could at least meet him on an equal playing field as he was such a green light, wide open great guy...(really loved his character).
Truth be told, I was actually more engrossed in the second and third couples in this drama both of which elicited more emotional connection and interest for me than couple #1. And these four characters were beautifully portrayed by the casted actors too.
Jang Ki Yong has a great presence onscreen so I was totally on his team...and with another costar this could have been a great little drama but sadly it fell flat for me because of the FL.

Lacking in many ways

Had been excited to watch this drama, expected a really deep dive story where of course in the end there is no "we're happily ever after" but able another side of love that is letting go. For me, the side characters had been who really carried the show. They went with the ridiculous cliche of overbearing, abusive, childish, controlling parents/mothers. It was terribly predictable. The female lead did not really give much emotion to me in regards to the romance but I saw the most emotion from her in regards to her friendships which I appreciated. The love of friendship and the friend who is dying from cancer truly got to me. I absolutely understood where she was coming from, from knowing that her husband was cheating, to still wanting to prepare both her husband and child for when she would not be there. Breaking up in a heartbreaking sense and she wanted her husband to still find love. To still go on. I absolutely appreciated that realistic take on it.

Then the second friend and her adorable relationship, her needing to learn that not everyone will use her and her status. That she needs to mature too, to trust in someone that actually cares about her well-being, and to learn not everything revolves around her. It was a bit embarrassing watching her assume things but she had to learn. They initially "ended" things but came back together again.

Hate to say it but the ML and FL story lacked tremendously, there was no spark between them. Absolutely nothing that made me want to invest. Even though I absolutely adore the ML as an actor his character hardly held much depth. Aside from liking her first and the whole thing with the brother, their storyline just didn't do it for me. I found myself hardly caring about whether the two of them would work through things or not. She spent half the time they were together bringing up when they would break up and how. It could've been written much better and it's a shame that this drama fell short with such an amazing cast.
