The story is set during the Tenpo era. Monjiro is born into a poor farming family in Mikazuki Village, Nitta District, Joshu Province. Having spent an unfortunate childhood, Monjiro leaves home at the age of 10 and becomes a wandering gambler. Known for the toothpick he constantly holds in his mouth, Monjiro tries to live quietly, but he repeatedly becomes entangled in local conflicts.
