“Artsy” yet unsatisfying movie
SPOILER ALERT:I’m tired of all these types of shows that have the viewer invested in a love story that has misunderstandings. Oh, and the usual female lead is too nice to tell her best friend she likes the same guy, so she sacrifices her feelings.
Acting: Kim Yoo Jung- her acting is the best! This was the main reason I watched. Love her in everything she does. Actually secondary ML (Park Jung Woo) acting was better than ML (Byeon Woo Seok) but then again maybe it’s just that they made the characters that way. Secondary FL , BoRa’s best friend, I thought her character had a lot of nerve to expect BoRa to research the guy she liked even though they got the names mixed up, and then she got all mad at BoRa for liking him!
All in all, not happy with the direction they went with this…..would’ve liked to see FL and ML together…. At least you don’t have to invest 16 hours in a Series drama to find out that the FL and ML never get together!

Sweet and sad!
This show was short and hit all the right nostalgic notes! I liked the level of "conflict" in the movie (aka, not too annoying). It was a sweet and bittersweet movie. I cried a bit. Woonho was so dreamy, and I loved Bora's personality. It reminded me of Reply 1997 a bit (but better) or Twenty-Five Twenty-One (but not as good). It would've needed to be longer with more character-building to achieve the highs of Reply 1988. But it does give you a good dose of a youth / coming-of-age drama without following them for a long journey (considering it's self-contained in just two hours). The turn of the century really did seem like a simpler time.I was surprised by the end, but it was the only circumstance that made sense.

The Heartbreak of Nostalgia
This has all the markers of a cliche romance coming-of-age story, but they managed to pull every emotion out of me while doing it.The chemistry between the main leads was 100% there and I absolutely loved the warm and fun relationship that they had; it truly felt like seeing two high schoolers falling in love, with all the silly things and stressful decisions that usually come with experiencing love at that age, for the first time.
The ending is a little vague and leaves some open questions, but it really doesn't bother me that much when I think about the construction and perspective of the movie; either way I didn't expect it to hit this film to hit this hard but it did and I think it'll go down as one of my favorites.

Dissappointing
I liked the first half of the movie. It was a nice, highschool romance and I liked it very much. I wanted to cry a little bit and I was expecting an engaging, touching story... and this was just not it. I didn't shed a single tear - and I'm a very emotional person, so I was very dissappointed because I wasted 2 hours on this movie. The 'plot twists' (if I can even call them that) were too predictable. Also, the cry of the female lead is so annoying to me: too theatrical, unnatural - it reminds me of a toddler wanting to get attention.

a ‘bud’ of a movie
Mayve the fact that I expected a lot of this movie made me so disappointed. The scores and reviews are all good, it’s a Netflix Production, and it’s got a very good cast.. so what could possibly go wrong? With all those good things I guess the script and writing is what fumbles. It’s a shame because a lot of lower production does things a lot better but don’t get the recognition they deserve. I won’t talk about that anymore here.. I’ll just share my thoughts about the movie
What I liked were the main character trio. I liked them, but unfortunately they weren’t developed at all. The time jump seriously is too harsh and the division is very big between being a high school to an adult. The college scene was thrown in there to make up for it but it failed, it just showed that Bo Ra against gotten over Woon Ho, and it was done with a blind date which I find pretty lazy. There are so many ways to present a character missing someone but trying to deny it, and she straight up said it out loud.
There is a lot of visually stunning moments, the aesthetic is very good with this movie. I just wished they would’ve been more creative other than just beautiful scenes. They couldn’t done much more symbolically.
Woon Ho and Bo Ra had a short romance, but it didn’t get to be fully developed either. It seemed nothing fully bloomed. So I don’t understand why Woon Ho was just pronounced dead- it really threw me off? The time skip didn’t need to happen- honestly I can’t tell what kind of ending to a movie this was other than to cheaply try to get people to cry. Emotional stories can be done better than that, it’s kind of insulting to kill someone off and just say it rather than show or allude slowly or hint it. He was just dead and she never knew.. it felt cheap to me to get me to feel bad. If this movie really wanted a cry and to make a character die at least tell me why he died, instead I’m left feeling like this movie didn’t end, it was very loose and had no resolution. Her friend wasn’t brought up on the future, her parents, her own brother… what happened to those characters that were introduced.
I also understand I’m being harsh. But within a realistic setting and time that I’ve lived through I’m just baffled at this loose approach. It’s hard to have things be so all over the place and unexplained if it’s in a modern setting where answers can be found easily.
So this movie is just a watch- interesting, it was so easy to just do and not make a fuss but it tried too hard and failed for me.

Good Enough
Korean movie " 20th Century Girl " is a romantic comedy with a bittersweet feeling. The story is masterfully presented, by utilizing the misunderstanding twist and making it work. It is youthful, nostalgic, and presents a sweet love story.
The performances, in addition, were all great by all the actors and actresses in the cast. But the leading lady stole the show admittedly.
However, the ending could have been handled better, as it left a lot of plot holes and it wasn't as good as the rest of the movie. Not that the conclusion wasn't interesting, but it wasn't explained. Rather, it was rushed.
So, overall, eight out of ten.

A movie that made me travel to a past that wasn't mine
Rarely do we come across movies that are so predictable yet so good. There were so many moments that I could relate to. It felt so close to my heart and that is why it hurt deeply.I especially loved the cinematography and effect they gave to show 90s era. It made me so nostalgic and I wished like a fool to travel back to that time.
I loved how they made us think hyun Jin was the lead when in fact it was woonho.
The friendship dynamics were so real. I absolutely loved the plot twist, if made me cry out aloud. In short, this film made me feel every emotion especially the feeling of being in love. The love that feels amazing and hurts your heart at the same time.
10/10 would watch it again.
Recommended to anyone looking for a bittersweet romance.

I will never recover from this - Recommended!
This movie was just wow. It was a roller coaster full of emotions. The acting was amazing and I loved the two main characters (still do). If you ask me, will I rewatch this again? Yes, I will. Even if it breaks my heart again? Yes, I will.20th century girl made me bawl my eyes out. It was so beautiful yet so sad. The first time I watched the movie I wasn't sure what to expect. I thought I would just be watching a sweet high school romance with A HAPPY ENDING!! It was indeed not a happy ending. When Bo-Ra finally confessed her feelings to Woon-Ho I really wished he would've just stayed even if it was just for a day. Watching them call on the phone all the time and seeing Bo-Ra age, waiting for him to come back was one of the saddest things to watch. I despised Woon-Ho for it, I thought he moved on and went on with his life in New-Zealand. Him not picking up, not messaging her, deep down I could feel it coming, but I refused to believe it. When Woon-ho's little brother, Joseph, finally broke the news to Bo-Ra, I was glad she was finally able to move on and to live her life without having to keep waiting. Even though I wished Joseph would've told her sooner, the expedition was a really nice touch to the movie and it was beautifully done.
Although I wished for it 20th century girl to have a different ending, it just shows that no matter what, you should just go on with your life and move on instead of waiting. Moving on and making the decision to do so is hard especially when you're holding on to the past and pain, but eventually it will help you to live your life the way you want to live it.

Emotions
The story to this show just had my emotions on a rollercoaster. I never did think it was gonna be sad but the fact that it didn't end how I thought it would end, she waited for him, but he died in the end, that was the most hardest part for me 😭, why did the story have to end like that? I really want a second one, but ik it's not gonna happen has there was no cliff hanger. But maybe one day we could get a squall or something, but y'all really had my emotions on a roller coaster going up and down doing loopsWas this review helpful to you?
Just another idol film with the intent to sell Kim Yoo Jung.
(1) Story [-]There's nothing original in the story, so cliche and highly predictable. And there's nothing in the story itself, no message to convey, just bringing the formula of teenage love story that full of misunderstanding in for the actors to play. They try to make a twist but it's a cliche twist, so it's not a twist in the end since audience can guess it right beforehand. However, the feelings between the characters has a solid foundation to be believable. If you also watch Chinese movies, you'd know how unpassionate the production teams are in making a film. They don't care to build a foundation for their stories, so lots of Chinese films are very much superficial and not believable at all. This movie is a good example for comparison. It is a story with nothing but still have a good foundation, so no matter how nothing the story is, as long as the actors can perform, audience can still enjoy it. Thus, higher score.
---------------------------------
(2) Acting [+]
Kim Yoo Jung is the star of the film. She carries the whole team. It's very enjoyable to watch her acting. The ML is so-so. I don't feel right with his smile at times which I'm not sure if it's due to his acting or just the physical feature of his smile. The best friend of ML's acting skill isn't that strong but I'd give him passable. The acting of the FL's best friend isn't real enough. I feel like her true self tries to pretend to be the character, so it feels more pretentious though the character is actually sincere. Anyway, her role doesn't show up much so it's ok.
---------------------------------
(3) Cinematography [~]
Cinematography is upto standard, but I don't really like their dream-like filter. In the scene at the vast lawn, all the colors look obviously artificial.
---------------------------------
As a whole, it is enjoyable to watch, but also wasting time. I wouldn't rewatch it, that's for sure. And if I know it'd be like this, I don't think I'd watch it in the first place.

Great
Everyone should watch this movie. There was no better way, in my opinion, to depict a first love or the value of friendship. I've seen a lot of dramas and love stories, but I believe "20th century girl" captures the innocence of first love the best. A little portion of the reason why the movie is so amazing is the method by which the viewer comes to understand Bora and her character throughout the film. One of the clearest and most genuine portrayals of character development I have seen in a while is hers. Overall, every character is written so genuinely that one can comprehend their decisions and ideas, not just hers. Was this review helpful to you?
