Guardians of the Dafeng

Ridiculously... addicting

This is one of those series where you'll take a day off work for, ignore text messages and phone calls, and just hole in at home comfortably as you allow yourself to engross fully into its lore. Being someone who isn't a huge fan of this time-travel concept or incorporating modern with historical, I'm still in disbelief as to how this series won me over and over again.

Reviewing all my mental check boxes, it is difficult to find fault here other than a few nits I'll mention later.

Plot: How does one explain the nearly perfect balance of plot flow that ebbs and flows with enough of the unexpected to keep you on your toes? It does it in such a natural way that unlike the series that throws you into a super high cliffhanger at the end of an episode, there's a calm consistency to it. It also has one of the best pivots of lightheartedness to somber and back again - I would be easily manipulated to literally laughing out loud one minute and to have tears swell up in the next.

Acting/Chemistry: Fantastic cast! Despite the relatively large cast so far, there hasn't been one who hasn't fully embraced their role. As for the chemistry between the cast? Yes, yes, and yes.

Music/Special Effects: I rarely touch on music and sound effects but in order to really be able to shift from one moment to the next smoothly, it is a necessity and successful it was. For special effects on non-humans, it's also one of the best I've seen so far.

So here are my own personal nits that are very much biased.

-- I'm not a fan of the ML's love interest. It has nothing to do with the FL's acting or even the character because she plays her role very well. I can even almost understand why he chose her. But I never like main leads (whether male or female) who end up with pretty much useless significant others. Loving someone but not being to do a thing for them other than cause problems is just not my thing.
-- The male lead was cast pretty perfectly except I think he needs a bit of work on his expressions of sorrow and grief. Initially thought maybe it was his eyebrow being too prominent or his lips being too stiff, but still can't really figure it out.
-- Our heroes can move swiftly when fighting, climb the skies, and use alchemy to teleport but yet there are times when they are rushing to a location "too late" because they rode a horse.

However, these are really minor complaints compared to the overall essence of the series. I held off on this for a while because it was based on a "time-travel" concept but I'm really happy to have finally tried it. Thankfully, this isn't one of those where the leads go back and forth between the past/current or go back and forth between alternate worlds. Really hoping season two for this one doesn't flop the way it did for me with JoL... but thank you for the journey of this season.

And let's not forget the bromances—Xu Qi’an's interactions with his male comrades often steal the spotlight, delivering both laughs and heartfelt moments.

The drama doesn't take itself too seriously, and neither should you.

If you're here for a sweeping love story, you might want to adjust your expectations. The romantic elements are subtle, occasionally popping up like unexpected cameos. They're sweet, but they don't drive the plot. Think of them as the cherry on top of an already indulgent sundae.

That ending? Cliffhanger so sharp it left teeth marks. 😤 Exactly how you keep folks hooked.
Season 2 wish list: Xu Qi’an tells his deadbeat dad to stay gone, backs the Supervisor, the crew gets their memories back, LW struts in like he never left, and they all throw hands at evil.
Will it happen? Who knows—but I’m locked in, tea poured, ready for the chaos. 🍵🔥

Guardians of the Dafeng isn't flawless—some jokes miss the mark, and the ending might leave you with more questions than answers. But if you're in the mood for a genre-blending adventure that doesn't shy away from its own absurdity, this drama delivers. It's a delightful mess, and sometimes, that's exactly what you need.

I have never enjoyed a drama as much as this

Usually I watch drama for the male leads or female leads, unless it have very good recommendation in mdl. When I know this is Dylan Wang’s drama, I don’t plan to watch but my sis told me it’s very funny. She was only at episode 7 and keep talking non stop about it. So I decided to give it a try and it’s a no return. Started out as slapstick but managed to make me laugh so loud my neighbour came to find out what is happening. Yet, in the midst of all the laughters, Dylan’s acting captivated me. His eyes, his demeanors, or even his speech are all on point. Together with rest of the crew, this is one of the best drama I have watched in many many years.

So good it needs another season pronto!

Cast was perfect in GOTD. I'm a rookie and have been watching cdramas only for about 6 months now. I binge and I have dropped more cdramas than I have completed. GOTD was maybe my third cdrama ever, and it's still at the top, #1 for me. OST is amazing. I was also annoyed with the FL at the beginning but was able to overlook it. Some parts are bit slow-paced sure but that happens in almost every cdrama I've watched. Otherwise, Dylan Wang is the perfect Xu Qi'an and we need more of him!

I liked the comedy - I didn't think it was forced or overdone. There was good character development and I loved the focus on the relationships and bonds the characters build with each other (I don't like shows where the characters feel flat). I hope this show stays relevant and is popular enough to warrant that S2!

Comedy,adventure,mystery,love and politics -A TOTAL PACKAGE

This is the most underrated cdrama of 2025...and one of the best as well. Some romance dramas are better rated than this...but I didn't have this much fun watching any of those.

WAITING FOR SEASON 2

Pros-
1) Dylan has done a great job. He is a total treat in this drama
2) The story is a fun watch and packed with humor
3) Despite being light, the emotional moments will make you tear up
4) The character growth of almost all important characters is well written
5) The smaller cases and interesting world building always leaves you anticipating.
6) The Bromance is also top notch

Cons -
The ML has a great chemistry with all females except the FL who seems to be there just for the sake of romance...she's boring!

Overhyped but Watchable for some Dumb Comedy

Not to piss off Dylan Wang Fans but if you want to use your own voice in a costume drama, work on your accent + line delivery. Success of Love Between Fairy and Devil (which I did enjoy) was partially contributed by the right choice of voice dubbing (Sound, Accent, Line Delivery). Of course, I would love it if more actors can use their own voices but that's under the condition if they can do it properly. It's the same concept where European/Australian actors that play American characters with the correct accent. I am sure it's hard work but it's part of acting.

From acting, many of his expressions are the same--that wrinkle between the eyebrow Look. Not comparable to the strong supporting cast. So many good actors can deliver those micro expressions.

Story wise ... kind of makes no sense how fast he solves the 1st case in 3 min. Lots of talking w/o actually going through the process of solving the murder. If you enjoy well written murder solving dramas like Imperial Coroner or Ancient Detective, then this is not it.

What's "Watchable"
Supporting Cast. There are so many familiar faces that can do these dumb humor roles very well. Although this kind of humor may not hit for everyone. 80% didn't hit for me. I much enjoyed "Go East" with Tan Jian Ci or The Happy Seven in Chang'an. Both are silly comedies that hit more for me.

I'll emphasize that these are just my personal opinion. I am not a super fan of any idol actors, but I am a fan of character portrayal and good story telling disregarding popularity.

I'm finding myself in the minority on this one but I pushed myself to get through 13 episodes and found I just could not do it anymore.

Things I like:
The costuming and casting
The premise and overall plot kine (I bet I would probably enjoy the book)
The CGI and sets are amazing
The soundtrack is phenomenal

Things I hate:
The slapstick comedy they use by making characters be dumb: Aunt and Uncle, Princess, etc
The main is too perfect; he solves cases so fast, his martial arts progresses too quickly, he is the best at literally everything
The lack of world building and the way they 'explain' Dafeng and the magic system too quickly and incoherently

I thought this show would be one of my favorites after watching the trailer and the first couple of episodes but the type of comedy used in this show sank it for me. Slap stick comedy or comedy done by making characters stupid just is not my cup of tea. It makes it feel forced down my throat and I end up gagging on it. If they had toned down their reach for comedy and focused on the plot movement then this would have been ten times better. The story itself is very interesting but the way it is shown is a miss for me. Xu Qi An is too perfect and progresses too quickly in a way that I feel cheapens him a bit. This a highly intelligent and compassionate character that does not want glory but instead cares for the people so he can't be bribed or swayed from his morals. But they make everything come easy to him instead of allowing him the chance to work for his successes especially when it comes to skills.

Overall if you enjoy that kind of comedy then I think you would really like this but if you find that it detracts for you then I would skip this one.

Hmm... Honestly, I didn’t expect much from this drama since I saw some posts and comments saying that it's not good at all. People are already dropping it even though the drama has just begun. But since I am a fan of Dylan and Xi Wei, I was still willing to watch it, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I made in choosing and watching a drama.
The GOTD was so good!!! There were no dull moments... every episode and case was satisfying. I love how they didn’t focus too much on the love story. They emphasized more on friendship, loyalty, trust, and the responsibility of being a guardian or a worker in the government. They showed how different sects work together to solve a case or help ordinary people. I love how they highlighted the different strengths of the women in the drama. They showed that good will always prevail and justice will be served to those with a clear conscience. The fighting scenes were superb!
The actors and actresses are amazing. Sometimes you’ll feel like you want to be part of the Guardians too. I love the three sworn Copper Gong brothers, the always-bickering Gold Gong sister and brother, the caring Xu Family, and of course, the strategist, hardcore Lord Wei. 😍

Overall, it’s an 8.5/10 for me. It was light, comedic, full of brotherhood, and a satisfying drama. You’ll get hooked on every episode. It was really a roller coaster of emotions – it was so good! BUT there are still some unanswered questions, and some episodes left me confused. For example, who are the other people from the Mirror? Where is the witch sect? How can Xu Qian command the supreme sword and the Loong? Is he a Dafeng Royalty? I really need part 2! 🥺
