49 Days with a Merman (2022)

Is the sea in your eyes?

This series is just magical - from beginning to end. I always enjoy it when you can see the ordinary with fresh eyes - how would an otherworldly creature view us? What would something we deem mundane look like to an alien being? From having to cook our food, to our mating rituals - just watching us being observed by Li Ren Yu (the bossiest merman in history) takes this show somewhere special. I cannot even begin to describe what a fun ride this show is - you'll laugh (a lot), you'll cry (a little) but, all in all, a good time is almost guaranteed. Oh, and just keep watching after the words "The End" pops up on screen - it just next levels the whole shebang! Two very, very enthusiastic thumbs up!

And yeah - "Is the sea in your eyes an actual question" that's asked in the series...and it is a beautiful moment.

A Fun Bromance

Overall: although it would have been better as an actual BL, this was enjoyable overall

Content Warnings: side character death, fight scenes, near death

What I Liked
- the chemistry and dynamic between the 2 male leads was great (hence why I think it would have been better as a BL)
- the intro animation sequence was good
- the funny moments
- the merman as an adorable thug (did not think I'd put those two words together, but just look at his dimples!)
- a montage scene that I actually liked

Room For Improvement
- I know it had source material but I think they should have made this actual m/m romance because the two male leads had such great chemistry. Many things have been straightwashed so I think they should have gaywashed this one.
- lack of consequences for both that high school guy and the 2 adults and that things were just totally good between the son and his dad
- there was a continuity error in the first episode
- cliche family stuff at the beginning

LOVE IT BUT I HAVE 3 NAGGING QUESTIONS

I know what the producers did here: They did not make this a BL to appeal to a wider audience – BUT they also placed BL elements to titillate BL fans to reach THAT market as well. So, even though this is not a BL, they gave BL fans some bits to munch on.

It’s not perfect but I’m still giving it a high score because it’s a breath of fresh air from pollution in the sea of BL/bromance series. Also for the strong chemistry of the two MLs.

I was ready to give it a perfect 10, but the first half of the finale episode (rescue and escape) quite ruined it for me. It could have been better written and executed.

Three nagging questions were left unanswered:

1) Where does Longjie get money now that grandpa is gone?

2) Why does Merman know how to read?

3) When Merman got caught in the rain and grew a tail, we saw his shoes near the tail. Where did his pants go?? Haha!!

Funny, & touching and meaningful!

Don't let 1st episode fool you. Initially, I thought it's a bit goofy within first 5 mins, but boy, I'm glad I stayed on. It's touching and meaningful, yet funny.

I wonder how this would be like as a BL, since the chemistry between the 2 MLs are amazing. However, at same time, I kinda glad that it's not. Bcoz, honestly while I love BL, i am a little bit feeling "intoxicated" by the unncessary drama or unhealthy relationship in BL, that I am so happy to watch a show like this one

It is healthy bromance yet there is some BL-ish element that still keep this BL fangirl happy.

In fact, I enjoy this than most of the BLs! I mean, not every male leads have to end up kissing with hot steamy scene, right? Sometimes, a real friendship or bromance like this one is what saves the show

Give it a shot, it's really worth it. I enjoy every moment and did not skip any scene!!!

Unique, fun and keeps you interested all the way

It was a story of loving friendship all the way. No cliches, and some unexpected elements of surprise. Lots of fun moments that had me laughing out loud, and some other very cute and sweet ones. I felt happy and satisfied. I thought the romance element between boy and girl was very, very sweet and the friendship between the two male leads was as beautiful and cute as the dimples of the merman. The music was very pleasant even if it wasn't memorable. The only cliche, if we may call it so, was the "bad guys" that resembled more like those in a western type of children's movie. The cinematography was quite good and the merman tail itself deserves a high rate. A great variation from nowadays dramas that often fall short of my expectations.

The Taiwanese adaptation of the manga Orenchi no Furo Jijou was very successful. She was witty, funny and the imperious merman played by actor Bruce He was played absolutely brilliantly and with gusto. Cute moments, sometimes more serious, but mostly those that lighten our mood and there is no need to look for connections or dig into whether it is possible or not. The two main actors played an excellent relationship, and sometimes I was rather sorry that it was conceived only as a bromance, because they had far more, but the original blueprint had to be followed. Pleasant fool.

Taiwanská adaptace mangy Orenchi no Furo Jijou se moc povedla. Byla vtipná, zábavná a panovačný mořský muž v podání herce Bruce He byl zahrán naprosto skvěle a s chutí. Roztomilé momenty, někdy vážnější, ale většinou takové, které rozjasní naši náladu a netřeba hledat souvislosti nebo se hrabat v tom, zda to tak je možné či nikoliv. Oba hlavní herci zahráli výborný vztah a někdy mě spíše bylo líto, že byl pojat jen jako bromance, protože měli daleko navíc, ale původní předloha se zřejmě musela dodržet. Příjemná blbinka.

MAGICAL

Okay so I wanna start with the good things about this drama,
First of all Bruce He captures our attention here, like I like how he acted so cute here, also the boy his partner did a great job also,
I liked the story on the first part, it felt new, it is refreshing , it is different, like how we all together wonder why that merman Lin Ren Yu went up with Zhao, it was funny and intersting, I liked their bromance,
My favorite parts is when the merman heals the boy, it was just wonderful, amazing and magical ! I loved it !! 😍
It just feels good watching them quarrel, everything is just magical.

Now what I dont like about this drama is the fact that it is not a BL , I skipped on the parts whereZhao and his girl crush developed with each other, and I was sad that our merman Lin Ren Yu justsl watched them.
Also I think it would be better if the mermans hair is long and curly to make it appear somehow more realistic
Also there are some line of the merman there when he was like asking about the things of humans that somehow make me think it was ridiculus, but still it was all cute ! So It was nit bad at all

Over all It was wonderful and the ending was perfect, like they've became special friends like you know there are friends that like they were just yiur friends, but there are friends that has a special part in your heart !
And All I wanna say is that I wished there will be a merman also that will come to me for 49 days to make me happy !!

Me And The Merman In My Bathroom!

This was actually a really good and fun watch. It had humor, friendship, a good plot, and heart! This little gem is definitely worth watching.

Long Jie is a high school student who’s been living with his grandpa after his parents died. One day, after his grandpa passes away, Long Jie falls into the sea and gets saved by a merman. There's this saying that if a merman is saved by a human, he has to grant a wish. Turns out, this merman was saved by Long Jie's grandpa years ago, and the wish he made was for his grandson’s happiness. So now the merman, who Long Jie names Li Ren Yu, has 49 days to make him happy so he can return to the sea.

This was absolutely hilarious. I laughed at so many jokes. I think I’m getting used to Taiwanese humor and honestly, it’s so good. But then it also hits you in the feels by the end and yep... tears.

The friendships were amazing to watch. I loved the youthful energy of the group. Long Jie, Cong Jian, Bi Yu, even the bully guy Da Bao. All of them were so much fun. The bromance between Long Jie and Ren Yu was the highlight for me. I get why people wanted this to be a BL because the chemistry was there, like wow. But I actually really liked that it wasn’t. I’d even say it wouldn’t have been as powerful if it was a romance. Their platonic bond was deeper than any ocean. And sometimes that hits harder than any love story.

It starts off like “there’s a monster living in my bathroom” and slowly becomes something really beautiful. They care so much about each other. They go through so much. And it genuinely hurt when Ren Yu had to leave. I wasn’t ready to let go.

But like... be honest... this had every single BL-coded scene. I kept thinking “ok but kiss?” even while loving the whole deep friendship angle. They literally bathed together every night even though Ren Yu didn’t have “that thing” lol.

Also, I actually liked the soft romance between Bi Yu and Long Jie. Awkward boy meets confident, quiet girl is Kinda adorable.

Overall, do yourself a favor and watch this please!!!

Magical

I will have to complete a review with 300 letters but I could have summed this series up in less. Did I enjoy it
absolutely. Magical.. Funny.. Emotional.. unique..Feel good factor.. Loved loved it.. not a bl but as good as.
The bond the two ML actors a human and a merman was so captivating I had to binge watch the series to see if they both fared well and such a lovely ending. I would have been satisfied with the ending without the extension at the end of the credits but it was all good.
Director.. Producers.. Scripwriters you produced a gem of a series. As for all the actors especially Bruce He and Kent Tsai they were all outstanding.. ❤️

Beklentim yoktu. Yine de hayal kırıklığına uğradım.

Öncelikle şöyle başlayayım, kesinlikle bl olması gerekiyordu. Yani alt yapıyı bl yapıp kaçak kaç çıkılmış gibi hetero ilişkisi konulmuş. Çok yapmacık ve itici görünüyordu. Kadın karakteri oynayan oyuncu hoşuma gitse de olay örgüsünde gereksiz yer kapladığı için bazen itici görünüyordu.

Konu klasik aslında, deniz adamı ile insan arasındaki ilişki (bromance) işleniyor basit olmak gerekirse. İki ana karakter arasında ilişkiyi çok komik buldum. Çok doğal ve samimiydi. Ve izlerken kesinlikle zevk aldım.

Bu kadar. Şaka yapmıyorum. Dizi ile ilgili sevdiğim tek özellikler bunlar. Yan karakterler, hikaye, işleniş... Her şey vasat aldı. Hikaye çok tahmin edilebilir. İlgi çekici yan karakterler yok hepsi npc. Ve hikaye neden bebeklere anlatilan masallar gibi olmuş? Yani sanki 5 yaşındaki kardeşim için yazılmış trt çizgi filmi gibi hikâye bu. O kadar şey yazma olanağınız varken neden bu hikaye örgüsü? Bütün iki ana karakter arasındaki dinamiği mahvetti. Hayal kırıklığına uğradım.
