One Dollar Lawyer is an absolute gem that kept me hooked from start to finish! Namkoong Min as Chun Ji-hoon was phenomenal, bringing charm, wit, and emotion to the role of a lawyer who charges just 1,000 won yet fights for justice with unshakable determination. Beneath his humor lies a man seeking justice for personal tragedy—a heart-wrenching journey tied to his late wife and father, which adds incredible depth to his character. Kim Ji-eun as Baek Ma-ri was equally impressive, balancing strength and vulnerability as she worked alongside Ji-hoon to tackle corruption.

this kdrama deserves more recognition

This K-drama is so underrated, but every part of it was literally peak! I don't get why people didn't give this K-drama the recognition it deserved. The writing was amazing, and I was thoroughly entertained. There were so many hilarious scenes! This is actually one of my all-time favorite K-dramas

I loved how the writer portrayed the characters in this drama. Each character has a unique and complex personality, making them feel like real people. The storyline is also engaging, with unexpected plot twists that kept me curious until the end.

Moreover, I appreciated the themes explored in this drama, such as justice, equality, and the fight against corruption. The writer successfully depicted relevant social issues in an engaging and non-boring way.

Episode two takes it from a 6 to a solid 8.5

Episode one had me snoring sorry.
And that is after like 5 trial rewatches...
For a beginning episode it personally failed to pick interest which was a bummer because am a huge fan of the lead guy's previous dramas.
So i just left it halfway and went to episode two.
And from the first dialogue...it did exactly what it came to due. Delivered, and topped with a good amount of humour hence redeeming itself. Technically i didn't need the first episode that much.
I love when law shows actually do good focusing on the law part with interesting dialogue of back and forth and episode two put a big smile on my face.
Will be seated to see how it all unfolds further.

not a refreshing plot, but a wholesome comedy nevertheless

With only 2 episodes aired, writing a review may seem premature, but I have plans to edit this as I watch more episodes. It's just easier for me.

Nam Goong Min is Cheon Ji Hoon, a former prosecutor turned defense attorney - but a poor and broke-ass one, because he only charges 1000 won ($1) fee for each case he undertakes. The heroic protagonist that doesn't exist IRL. This stuff is meant for comic books, and it is apt for the production to feature an anime-style opening theme. Although I feel slipping into a character like Ji Hoon is not his forte, his acting is rather good.

My main complaint is the fake tan Nam Goong Min was given by the makeup team. It was horrible. He looked like a roasted almond skin - that tone doesn't blend well with his natural skintone at all. And they forgot to give his hands a tan too - in the last few scenes of Episode 2, you could clearly see the contrast between his original skintone of his hands, his ears, and the fake tan on his face.

Park Jin Woo, a veteran who has appeared in more films than in dramas, is Sa Mu Jang, Cheon Ji Hoon's "litigation office manager" and all-around partner in his cases. Cheon Ji Hoon is eccentric, but Sa Mu Jang is the comic relief. Perplexed by their debt situation due to Ji Hoon's policy of only accepting 1000 won for each case, he tried to resign from his position albeit unsuccessfully - because Ji Hoon wouldn't let him. Of course, being a lawyer, Ji Hoon should know that a resignation letter immediately takes effect once it is submitted. It doesn't matter whether the employer accepts it or not. For the sake of fiction, like 1000 won per case itself, the writers go with "let's tear up the resignation letter and pretend it never happened".

Kim Ji Eun is Baek Ma Ri, granddaughter of a law firm magnate. She is a prosecutor on her probationary term, and meets Ji Hoon in one of her cases. She lost the case to Ji Hoon, and her grandfather sent her off to work for Ji Hoon for two months in hopes she would be able to learn and apply her experiences at the law firm. Baek Ma Ri as a character is not particularly likeable, but we can predict with a degree of certainty that her character will improve as the story moves forward. However, Kim Ji Eun's acting itself needs a lot of work. She has a bad habit of overusing her lips to express a particular emotion, and to me, it's rather distracting. She also did this a lot in Again My Life, but back then I couldn't pin my finger on what's wrong with her acting. Now I know what bugged me so much. Employing a range of facial expressions is vital for any thespian, and I just feel she needs to learn how to do that more than relying on just the exaggerated movements of her lips.

It's probably strange to say this, but with an outrageous premise like this, I don't expect much from the drama - and yet at the same time, I do have expectations for it to continue to entertain with its comedic scenes and character growths. I will edit this review and its score in weeks to come.

Large Pinch of salt

Disclaimer: this response is very partial because I could only bear to watch 1.5 episodes. The show is supposed for 13years + but I felt it would struggle even there.
First - the good - based on what I saw. ML and his side-kick the dry-cleaner were great and great chemistry. The idea of am effectively pro bono law office is very appealing too. Sadly, the execution of a pro bono idea, not so much.
FL was so badly written with all the Kd tropes of incompetence and an inability to move in high heels, so she face plants in front of the ML. ML is much older and more experienced and is shown running absolute rings round her leaving her speechless and breathless. Honestly, that's so unoriginal and tired, and BORING. Her styling is pretty awful too - presented with a cut-glass hairstyle that has never had a hard-working hand run through it in frustration, shows up for her first day at her harappoje's law firm in a salmon pink suit like an overpriced Legally Blonde - it works in that show because it's a fundamental of her personality; here, it's not, and it's awful. As to her acting, I can't really comment because I disliked what we saw of her personality too much to offer a fair assessment. I did find NO evidence of chemistry between her and ML which was also very off-putting
NGM is absolutely marvellous, as he always is, but sadly ML is insufferably smug and patronising, and frankly NGM enjoys it a bit too much, which is for me a real turnoff. I fear he was over-playing those moments - like, a lot. I believe that later on there are flashbacks which explain the premise of the ODL "brand", and they may explain why he is such a pain in the neck too, but I couldn't bear it any more.
I've been generous in marking the acting, because most actors were pretty competent, and most (except the leads) were very watchable - but I blame the poor writing/directing for any poor acting.
I'm so sorry I couldn't like this more: I had hoped for something on the lines of Lawless Lawyer, albeit with slightly less 'adult' content, but this failed me so badly! And I love NGM usually, too, so I feel let down on two fronts ...😢

Una serie a tutto tondo, originale e con un protagonista spettacolare

"One thousand dollars Lawyer" è una serie che offre davvero tanto. Al centro della scena un protagonista che non può che distinguersi, sia grazie alla bravura dell'attore che alla caratterizzazione del personaggio interpretato. Namgoong Min, brillante e formidabile come sempre, regala allo spettatore un protagonista del tutto originale e anticonformista: dagli abiti di un'eleganza a dir poco eccentrica - in special modo la fissazione per il tessuto a quadri, più o meno grandi, e l'abbinamento di colori non propriamente convenzionali - agli occhiali da sole (diverse paia, alcune abbastanza vistose), sfoggiati anche in ambienti e contesti dove sembrano davvero non c'entrare nulla, alla chioma ondulata ottenuta con l'arricciacapelli. Singolare nell'aspetto, quindi, ma anche nel carattere e nelle modalità relazionali, dove l'approccio sembra farsi spesso beffe dei convenevoli, talvolta anche del buonsenso, dando l'idea di un avvocato a dir poco sopra le righe - per certi versi un po' pazzo - che viene facilmente preso per tale ma che cela in realtà un'intelligenza, capacita e arguzia non indifferenti. Un finto tonto che sa mettere sotto scacco l'avversario, insomma. I momenti seri si stemperano in quelli divertenti, con chicche di comicità apprezzabili, mentre musica, riprese e sceneggiatura sembrano dare il loro valore aggiunto con delle sottolineature che ulteriormente caratterizzano l'originalità del personaggio (non sono poche le scene in cui tra inquadratura e colonna sonora, sembra di avere a che fare con l'eroe di un film western degli anni '80, ad esempio). Apprezzata anche la chicca presente in uno dei primi episodi, dove quando la tirocinante Baek cerca di depistarlo dall'associarla all'omonimo studio legale affermando che è un cognome molto diffuso, cita una serie di persone e, tra queste, nomina "Baek Seung Soo", protagonista di una serie tv reale (Hot Stove League") interpretata proprio da Namgoong Min, ed è quasi esilarante il commento di lui rispetto al fatto che era un ottimo drama e che meriterebbe di avere una seconda stagione. Nella prima parte la trama si sviluppa sul susseguirsi di casi che l'avvocato Cheon accetta per una parcella di 1.000 won (all'incirca 1 euro) e che vince anche se in modi tutt'altro che comuni, ricorrendo a strategie strambe ma che al contempo denotano l'arguzia celata dietro alla maschera di avvocato con qualche rotella fuori posto e facile da mettere nel sacco. I casi rappresentano un'escalation: si parte con quelli più semplici, volti più che altro a introdurre il protagonista che ad affascinare con la vicenda legale in sé - per poi passare a situazioni sempre più impegnative. Ho apprezzato che i casi non andassero di pari passo con gli episodi, spesso la loro risoluzione avviene nel bel mezzo di un episodio e già nelle scene successive s'inserisce il caso seguente. Altra cosa che ho apprezzato è che, a differenza di molte serie investigative con un caso a episodio ma che alla lunga vengono a noia, questa serie prima di incappare nella ripetitività del meccanismo vira abilmente, aprendo uno spaccato sulla vicenda personale del protagonista. E' a questo punto che si inserisce un lungo flashback, indispensabile per comprendere a meglio il presente e che spiega come Cheon sia passato dal essere il distinto, elegante e composto procuratore all'avvocato con uno studio abbastanza squallido e che gira su uno sgangherato furgoncino delle consegne del lavasecco. Due sono i personaggi chiave del suo passato: il padre, con il quale già di base c'è un rapporto particolare e che lo pone davanti alla difficile scelta tra affetto e senso della giustizia, trovando poi un tragico epilogo; l'avvocato della parte avversaria ma che, paradossalmente, fa il tifo per lui in nome del valore della giustizia. Una donna che lo affascina, che lo sostiene, che gli indica una direzione per una nuova vita, che crede in lui e in ciò che può diventare anche a livello di essere umano (l'invito a sorridere più spesso, a ridere e a mostrare quel lato divertito, piacevole e cordiale che lui cerca evidentemente di sopprimere). L'attrice che interpreta il personaggio non è tra le mie preferite: ha già lavorato con l'attore protagonista e il duo funziona anche, ma mi ha sempre ispirato una innata antipatia, per cui la sopporto meglio quando interpreta personaggi della schiera dei cattivi (o quasi) come in "My dearest". Qui invece è la perfezione fatta a donna: dolce, gentile, retta, fedele a lui e portata a credere alla possibilità di un mondo migliore e più giusto, pronta a lasciare il cinico studio legale per il quale lavora e avviare un'attività in proprio (sarà lei a decretare la famosa parcella da 1000 won), oltre a portare l'inflessibile procuratore a farle una proposta di matrimonio. Ripeto, figura senza difetti che con la sua tragica e prematura dipartita diventa praticamente una santa, lasciando Cheon straziato dal dolore e segretamente desideroso di vendetta. L'ultima parte della serie torna al presente, i casi incominciano a intrecciarsi a questioni legate al passato (del resto misteri e segreti lasciati in sospeso debbono trovare una ripresa - e una degna conclusione - nel presente, altrimenti non avrebbero senso),ma lui appare cambiato: l'aspetto resta singolare, ma più contenuto, quasi una via di mezzo. Idem a livello caratteriale, dove sembrano sovrapporsi le due diverse personalità, il procuratore che era e l'avvocato che si è lasciato il passato alle spalle, per delineare finalmente un personaggio completo di tutte le sue parti. Bello il rapporto con la tirocinante, di carattere e fatto di punzecchiamenti vari, non come quello un po' troppo morbido che c'era con l'ex fidanzata. Peccato non sia sfociato in una nuova relazione, ma il drama è talmente bello di suo che posso anche perdonargli la mancanza di un romance. Simpaticissimo il capo ufficio Sa, elemento sano e divertente, che bilancia spesso il clima della situazione. Più sterili invece i personaggi secondari della procura. Tra gli attori, ho apprezzato in particolare modo quello che interpreta il sig. Baek, nonno della tirocinante e presidente dell'omonimo studio legale: attore che ho già visto in altre serie e che da sempre un valore aggiunto come personaggio secondario (data l'età è sempre il nonno/padre di qualche protagonista). Concludendo, quindi, una serie davvero bella e davvero meritevole, dove regia, sceneggiatura e riprese davvero hanno svolto un ottimo lavoro e si vede, anche se il vero punto forte è l'attore principale che, oltre che bravissimo come sempre, ci regala un personaggio unico nel suo genere ma che a tratti ricorda tanto altri personaggi ben riusciti da lui interpretati (Doctor Prisoner, per l'astuzia e il lato stratega, Chief Kim per la stravaganza ed eccentricità, My dearest e Hot Stove League per i difficili rapporti familiari, Beautiful Gong Shim per la ricerca di sé stesso...e potrei citarne altri: nell'avvocato da 1000 won c'è un po' - forse il meglio - di ognuno di loro.

Il dramma dei k-drama

Non so quali porcherie tecnico-finanziarie determinino (come ovunque) le produzioni televisive coreane. Ho letto spesso, ad esempio di sceneggiature che vengono rimaneggiate in corso d'opera a seconda dell'andamento degli gli indici di ascolto settimanali o di esigenze di implementazione del fan service o degli inserzionisti pubblicitari. Certo queste manovre, che non hanno niente a che fare con le capacità artististiche degli attori o spesso, con le aspettative degli spettatori sono quasi sempre negative sulla riuscita/godibilità dello spettacolo.
In questo drama, a mio avviso i risultati ottenuti sono devastanti. Il taglio, in itinere, di 4 puntate (12 delle 16 inizialmente previste, nonostante gli elevati indici di ascolto durante la programmazione) e il conseguente rimaneggiamento delle puntate ha completamente deformato uno spettacolo molto divertene e ottimamente recitato. Fino alla fine dell'ottava puntata il mio voto era un 9.5. Il voto finale è decisamente più basso e a salvare almeno questo risultato è la recitazione fantasmagorica di Namgoog Min. Il mio monoteismo coreano si è trasformato in un duoteismo (pardon). NGM ha raggiunto l'olimpo e siede ora, per sempre, accanto a Ji Sung. In questo spettacolo anche gli odiosi inserti pubblicitari, grazie alla sua maestria sono proprio divertenti (quello del caffè starbuck mi ha fatto morire dal ridere).
NGM è attore superpoliedrico e qui lo mostra in una gamma di trasformazioni personali sorprendente. E' divertente, scanzonato, serio-serissimo, determinato, finto tonto, compagnone e delicato, eccentrico ed equilibrato, pauroso e indomabile. In alcune delle sue versioni ha pure questa pettinatura tutta 'perfettamente disordinata' che gli dà quell'aria sbarazzina (che mette da parte quando fa l'integerrimo procuratore) che lo rende, per me, un piacere anche per gli occhi.
Nel trio che forma il personale dello studio legale, dove tutte le cause costano un dollaro ai clienti meno abbienti, spicca anche la recitazione del braccio destro del protagonista: Park Jin Woo nella parte del proprietario di lavanderia, mr. Sa. Ji Hoon lo ha salvato in un caso legale difficile e ora mr. Sa, ingenuo fino alla tontaggine e timoroso di natura, per aiutare il ML si butterebbe nel fuoco, tremando come una foglia. Bravissimo. La protagonista femminile non è male ma è distante anni luce dai due uomini.
Fino al tracollo lo spettacolo ha pure aggirato la modalità legal-drama un po' scontata del 'un caso diverso ogni puntata' che, visto uno, visti tutti. Dunque anche una certa originalità di sceneggiatura che si manifesta anche nella scelta di non costruire un passato, che si intuisce complesso e doloroso, attorno al protagonista. Fino alla sesta puntata non sappiamo chi sia davvero Ji Hoon, da dove venga, perchè faccia il povero avvocato con vestiti di alta sartoria, perchè viva in un attico e cerchi di sfuggire alla proprietaria dello studio legale perchè tremendamente in arretrato con l'affitto.
Insomma uno spettacolo egregio quasi ammazzato da decisioni di produzione. Detto questo ne consiglio la visione perchè, finchè mi sono divertita mi sono divertita molto.
Nota: c'è questa scena dove lui disperato per avere indirettamente causato il 'suicidio' dell'amato padre, profondamente consapevole della sua emarginazione professionale, conseguenza della sua irriducibilità al compromesso con i potenti, solo e senza risposte nè vie d'uscita si sdraia sul selciato di un vicolo sotto la pioggia scrosciante. La sua altrettanto irriducibile innamorata senza speranza gli si sdraia accanto silenziosa. Quando lui, girando la testa la vede capisce a un tratto che, forse, alla fine, l'amore può essere una scintilla nel suo buio esistenziale. Il suo sguardo verso di lei continua ad esser disperato ma un barlume di luce affiora nel fondo degli occhi e un decimillimetro di sorriso incurva impercettibilmente le sue labbra. Le grand retour de Nam Goong Min !

Pour être tout à fait honnête, ce drama ne mériterait pas objectivement un 9/10. Le scénario ne casse pas des briques et il faut avouer peu de suspense nous tiraille, voire même sont assez prévisible. Les vilains ne sont pas phénoménaux et charismatique ne peut leur être appliqué. Bien qu'en tant qu'avocat, on nous tente de nous démontrer l'ingéniosité de Ji Hoon, il n'y a rien de transcendant. De plus, un drama de 12 épisodes, c'est assez peu en temps normal, où nous avons plus l'habitude du classique 16 voire 18 épisodes. Cela se ressent dans les derniers épisodes où nous aurions aimé avoir plus, plus de manigance du méchant, plus de "in your face" de Ji Hoon, plus de temps afin de développer ce qu'on nous montre en 2 épisodes. C'est rageant, frustrant au plus haut point (surtout quand on sait que d'autres dramas, ayant plus de popularité, sans arriver à la cheville de ce drama ont droit à une saison 2....). Alors oui, mon chouchou dans ce type de rôle, c'est sa zone de confort, oui cela peut rebuter. En ce qui me concerne, c'est ainsi que j'aime Nam Goong Min! totalement déjanté, n'ayant pas peur de se ridiculiser afin de nous montrer ensuite le meilleur de lui même.
Alors pourquoi? Tout simplement par ce que j'ai adoré (nous avons adoré, étant 5 à le voir en même temps). Un drama qui peut juste nous faire rire du premier au dernier épisode ne court pas les rues. Les scènes loufoques ne sont ici pas seulement soutenues par Nam Googn Min mais aussi par ses autres acolytes. Alors soulignons le fait que l'humour est ingénieusement dosé entre une Mari tout aussi folle que Ji Hoon, un Mu Jang adorable et loyale, un Min Hyuk maladroit et stupide mais tellement sincères dans ses amitiés et une Ye Jin qui apporte la touche de sérieux dans ce groupe de joyeux luron. Le lien qui se crée ou se fortifie au fur et à mesure est un bel exemple de réussite (contrairement à "Black Knight "...). Si au départ, je n'étais pas super fan de Mari et de son arrogance, très vite elle nous séduit par ses mimiques extraordinairement drôles face au géniallisime NGM, il faut donc pouvoir tenir la dragée et j'avoue que l'actrice y excelle à merveille. Leur amitié est telle que j'avais peur que cela ne dévie vers une énième romance, quel ne fut pas mon soulagement de voir Ji Hoon fidèle à sa dulcinée.
J'ai totalement adoré le duo de procureur qui ici apporte une fraîcheur inédite, un duo que j'aurais vraiment aimé voir par contre tourner autrement.
La morale est simple, peut-être un peu trop même, mais j'aime ce genre de moralité. Défendre la veuve et l'orphelin ne devrait pas tourner autour de simple deniers, rappelons qu'avocat signifie tout de même "C'est celui qui assiste autrui en justice."

Le jeu des acteurs est à la hauteur de leur rôle, nous faisant rire de bonheur, nous obligeant à en demander plus.
L'OST restera tout comme celui de "Taxi Driver" dans nos mémoires, surtout avec la version Nam Goon Min...

Certes, ce n'est pas le drama du siècle. Certes, nous avons déjà vu ce type de drama avec "Chief Kim" (le meilleur selon moi). Certes, c'est trop court et un peux vite expédié à la fin.
Mais on rit tellement, on s'amuse tellement, on applaudit à tout rompre qu'on lui pardonne ses autres défauts!
Et bien sur, nous ne serions pas contre une saison 2...

Bom, o que cada pessoa sente ao assistir qualquer dorama é bem íntimo, e o que eu senti enquanto assistia era um misto de emoções. Pra falar a verdade eu GOSTEI muito, amei o jeito meio doido dos personagens, mas acho que 12 eps foi muito pouco para o encaixe das histórias.
Por exemplo, eu senti muita falta de passar mais sobre a interação dos protas como um casal, eu sei que o dorama não é de romance, mas sei lá, a fanfiqueira que habita em mim necessita disso ás vezes, ainda mais quando os atores tem uma química gigantesca, e isso eles tem.
Mas o tanto que ele me tirou altas risadas foi demais.
É isso!
