Exciting plot, sweet romance, but wasn't enough

Quick thoughts:

This drama was full of lots of political scheming and fighting, it was very exciting to watch all the powers at play; The romance aspect was a bit lacking. Although the couple were so devoted to eo and sweet, they weren't very intimate so it was a bit of a waste/let down. However, I really appreciated how understanding and respectful the main couple was. They were such a healthy couple to watch, similar to the main couple in Sweet Life Begins; Lastly, the bad guys' ending wasn't satisfying enough.

Overall, it was an okay drama with common faults.

The young is really the future, just teach them well.

When I decided to watch this drama, I just knew very little information about it (I don't want to be spoiled).
To be honest, the story and plot is well organized accordingly. The transition of young and willful youngsters to responsible individuals, this is the kind of story I always want to watch. Inspiring and full of lessons.
This is the only cdrama that made me cry the whole night to my sleep and waking up with a swollen eyes (eps 14-15 struck my heart with a knife).
The loyalty and friendship between the important characters is for everyone to treasure. The trust of each other is what makes everyone of them successful and happy.
Kuddos to the whole casts and team, this drama will never be forgotten.

An excellent historical series, with high budget, addictive and well done.

I didn't know the other actors, but I like the director and especially the ML, Bai Jing Ting ❤❤❤.

Warning: I like reading detailed reviews, carefully analyzing the history of the series, the actors, the characters, etc. what people sometimes do on MDL. But I don't have the knowledge for that. So I'm just describing my feelings (in short)!

Plot: the FL, legitimate but disadvantaged daughter of a merchant, is married to the ML, noble, rich, idle and arrogant. She will "put him back on the right path", learn how to do business, and they will face conflicts, war, exile, plots, etc. together. and work together to consolidate the nation.

PROS:
+ 2 excellent main leads (the ML, Bai Jing Ting & the FL, Song Yi), who have a good chemistry.
+ Great general cast, with well-developed 2ndary characters
+ story written with finesse and intelligence, coherent and relatively realistic.
+ dynamic production, without length.
+ Superb costumes, high quality battle scenes, beautifully aesthetic images... ((In particular, a superb episode 27 (battles, 1st kiss, FL in a wedding dress beating the war drum, etc.)) => Big budget!!
+ Epic OSTs, the songs were very fitting and set a dramatic and emotional tone that is infused throughout the show.

CONS:
- The narration is a little slow in the 3rd narrative arc (construction of the dam) even if it is essential to understand the storyline.
- subtitles difficult to follow on certain episodes (display the translation of the song rather than the dialogues).

=> This is a magnificent historical series, addictive and really well done (to watch and rewatch sometimes)...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BEST DRAMA AHHHH!

Made an account just to rate it and convince people to watch it. Worth your time. I am very picky with dramas and sometimes will drop one after 1 episode but this one is so good. I say one of the best drama of 2023. Music cues on point, right amount of suspense, amazing acting, and costume. Cinematography is good.Ending lacked a little bit of something for me, though it was a very appropriate ending. Overall, a great drama.I can compare the amounts of death and intrigue it had with GOT hahahaha.

Give it a Go, good story. Good acting. AN ACTUALLY BRIGHT FL

So not ever having watched bai jing ting or song yi before I started watching it just for the sake of watching it. But it was much better than expected. It's GOOD. Its WONDERFUL. The fl is much better than cliche period drama fls who end up harming the ml a lot. ( I mean they hurt him emotionally and sometimes act foolish and put him in danger ). The couple chemistry is very good. They started off in a classical cdrama fashion but nahh their relationship isn't anything I expected it to be. There are no misunderstandings. No toxicity. The fl is wise and benevolent. My women started businesses from scratch 3 times! She protects and supports the ml - politically, financially. Here, men are not the only breadwinners and protectors. It's an equal relationship in true sense.

The supporting characters like zhou ye, shen ming and Ye shi'an are all good actors and support the main couple very much in their pursuits. The commissioner Fan Xuan was a benevolent leader. (I am so happy he didn't disappoint me).

Well what started off from the snow of Jiangnan, through the dry winds of north it ended up in Dongdu. The fl who started as a timid, oppressed-in-her-own-family girl grew up to be a business tycoon having wealth which rivaled the kingdom. And the ml who was a playboy not listening to his parents in the starting eventually became a minister in the court and not any minister the left councillor (basically the one on highest post). What started off as a misunderstanding, eventually became a beautiful relationship standing strong in times of war, separation and tragedies. They parted with their loved ones, their wealth. Gu jiusi, Indeed used his body to protect yuru's body from wind and rain and her clothes from dust and indeed yuru accompanied him in his travels of a thousand miles.

Generous, wealthy and considerate. They built relationships with people wherever they went. They both helped each other navigate through all hard times. Indeed, it was a God sent marriage.

On a side note - the ost is good and I really like the song 'it's you'

Destined to be a great drama about Love, Family and Responsibility.

Destined is a historical drama about the importance of responsibility, family and love. The plot is full of twists and overall is a worth to watch to those who enjoy historical dramas that have politics and still a heartfelt romance in it.

STORY:
Liu Yuru has been mistreated most of her life due to her father having a concubine who dislikes her and her mother. Liu Yuru has been trying her best to get an engagement with Ye family and just when she was about to get engaged to Ye Shi an, She happened to offend Gu Jiusi, the son of the wealthiest family in Yangzhou. Gu Jiusi has a bad reputation. He is known to slack in his studies and for using his time having fun and playing around.
Gu Jiusi plans a small revenge on her and loudly informs in front of many people that she is the one he wants to marry. When Gu Jiusi's parents hear about this, they immediately arrange an engagement between Gu Jiusi and Liu Yuru. Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi get married against their wishes and soon after marriage Liu Yuru starts to learn business from her mother-in-law while taming her new husband, helping him to study and make Gu family proud.
Gu Jiusi and Liu Yuru get closer day by day, but at the same time they must take new responsibilities as they need to keep their family safe.

SPOILER PART OF THE STORY, MY OPINION:
The plot is complicated as there were many things happening in a short period of time.
Liu Yuru is forced to marry a rich man who is a free-spirited idler, who believes he can live his life without working hard, relying on his family's wealth.
After they get married, Gu Jiusi informs Liu Yuru that when he or she finds someone they truly love, they will divorce. Gu Jiusi is still kindhearted and tries his best to comfort the sad Liu Yuru. Liu Yuru was lucky to have a great mother-in-law, as she understood her and decided to help her learn business and to let her take over the Gu Family business. She also trusted her to be able to tame Gu Jiusi. Gu Jiusi was a free-spirited boy who soon began to take responsibility and was inspired to learn and grow up thanks to Liu Yuru. This couple was so inspiring and truly helped each other grow. When the commissioner of Yangzhou wanted to kill every rich family in Yangzhou, Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi helped many of their family members to escape ahead of them to Youzhou. Gu Jiusi and Liu Yuru saves each other many times during the long and dangerous journey to Youzhou. When they finally arrive, they need to start over with new problems arriving as war rages on. The plot gets even more complicated when they move to the capital and Gu Jiusi becomes a minister.

The drama had a lot of things happening and in my opinion, my only problems with this drama only come from the lack of logic. After settling down in Youzhou, I understand wanting to contribute and help to protect the new hometown. Everything after that seemed very weird to me. Even though Gu Jiusi had done well protecting Youzhou, i don't understand why he would want to become a minister in the capital. It's understandable for him to be kind and fair, but the closer you are to the emperor, the more enemies you will have. I just couldn't see why Gu Jiusi would want to risk his or his family's life again and again for "the world". You would think that someone would not be willing to cause problems to their family after going through hardships and losing their father. Gu Jiusi, despite being warned of danger, continues to investigate logs and try to find out who has embezzled money. In the end, the emperor faked Liu Yuru's death, and they were apart for 3 years. In those 3 years, he thought his beloved wife was dead. But so did Liu Yuru's mother-in-law and mother, and many close friends of hers. He didn't even get to spend the 3 years with his mother and Liu Yuru's mother, but he was in another town building a dam.. And when Liu Yuru and Gu Jiusi meet again, they still decide to risk their lives to save the country...

Destined was entertaining and had its sweet moments and had a slow burner of a romance. We get to see Gu Jiusi and Liu Yuru slowly trust and fall for each other. The villain was great in the beginning, but in the end he left me a little confused as to why he was so obsessed with becoming the emperor. The only things i was actually disappointed were the lack of kiss scenes and the fate of some side characters. But the ending is a very happy ending for our main leads!

ACTING:

Song Yi as Liu Yuru,
She was great. I think her acting was pleasant, as she was supposed to be someone who has elegance and was taught well by her mother. Song Yi managed to act weak, determined yet strong Liu Yuru very well.

Bai Jing Ting as Gu Jiusi,
His acting didn't leave me cold. Truly fit for the role of a playful boy who grows up to a passionate man who wants to protect the ones he loves but also the world. Great acting from him!

Overall i would say that the drama is an 8.

More Finance - Not Romance

While this was a pretty good series, I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped to. The story was just mediocre and stretched out a little too long for me with no real appeal (I'm always in it for the romance factor, folks) and this one was not even a slow burn. We almost missed the romance completely! However, almost at the end when we got our PDA fix, it was fleeting at best. There were noble deaths, but characters we lost, nonetheless. I'm all about Karma, and for me, there wasn't enough development in the characters who deserved comeuppance. A couple of the storylines felt incomplete or not explained as much as I would have liked so as to get the intent and see the impact on the overall story.

The actors delivered good performances, the relationships were relatable and believable. They gave us a gamut of emotions and tugged at our heartstrings. They made us love them, hate them, grieve with them, celebrate with them. There was obvious chemistry between the ML & FL, but for me, it was a pity that there was no sizzling romance (what I look for in the dramas I watch).

But the real star of this drama was Liu Xue Yi. I like this actor a lot. I have seen him in other productions, and love when he plays a good guy. He put in a stellar performance in this drama - making it possible to despise his character and not even feel bad when he met his end. As touching as it was meant to be, his evilness was etched in my mind because of the superb acting of Liu Xue Yi.

Rewatch? Probably not. Too many episodes with not enough romance for my liking. However, this was a good series, worth watching to the end.

Unexpected Husband

First, I watched this for Bai Jing Ting. Liked him since the drama The Rise of the Phoenixes. As expected, He nailed his role here as Gu Jiu Si. I really enjoyed the first half of the story. I never thought BJT could also be so good in comedy. He really made me laugh. I'm not a fan of the FL. Her acting cutesie in the beginning by being a crybaby didn't work for me. Though, her character was a smart wife who can handle real deal business and manage the household well. As for the antagonist, Luo Zi Shang, being portrayed by Liu Xue YI, oh my, I also liked him. Why does he have to be a villain in this drama? Such a good looking antagonist. I simply didn't understand his character as a Grand Tutor. Like, why he has all this power and can manipulate everyone? He's not even a high profile official of the palace, not until the end that he was granted a position after interfering with the edict of the late Emperor.

Anyways, lots of things were stretched too long in this drama that should have shortened the number of episodes. I had to do lots of skips for the unnecessary political drama. I also hated the part when Jiu Si was framed by the Prince. And yes, when the Prince also forcibly took the throne was stretched too long.

For the positive aspect, I liked the friendship that transpired with the MC and Zhuo Ye and the Fl's ex fiance Ye Shian. Battle scenes were well presented. I also liked how the Late Emperor dodged the Empress Dowager on Jiu Si's issue. And yes, this power MC can always solve every obstacle that comes their way. Chemistry was definitely there. But, this is definitely too slow burn. Kisses were only done in 2 eps. (27&28) which I think is too lacking. Another downside for me in the romance aspect, like, they have already been an official married couple but, it really took time for them to be physically intimate together. It's just too hard to believe for a couple being in love, sleeps together yet can't be intimate. I mean, this is not a child's playhouse. I forgot to mention, I liked how GJS slammed and rejected the Princess straightforwardly while in prison. That was another epic scene.

I also feel like justice has not been really served well in this drama. Like The Prince should have been punished for the murder he has done and framed the ML. And yes, Luo Zi Shang, didn't even get to pay for his wrong doings. Oh, but I have to mention, Jiu Si's epic winning battle with Liang's reign.

The finale for the MC is simply okay for me. Not really I'm wow'd about. Like I said, would have been better if there were more sweet moments for the MC and skinships. Overall, I gave this a 7.5 Not my fave BJT drama, but surely he's admirable still for his portrayal.

I absolutely loved it!...until I didn't.

The first 10 episodes were captivating but they do not set the stage for the rest of the drama unfortunately. The tune changes so drastically about 5 times throughout the show that it feels like you’re watching a completely different story each time.

The Beginning Episodes: LOVED IT.
Liu Yuru is a sweetheart, strong and smart. She calls herself a pessimist but I’d say she turns into just the opposite from her wedding day on. She chose to take a “gamble” and try her life out with Gu Jiusu. Believing he was not that bad after simply hearing he had pleaded to have the dowry shops put in her name. She quickly accepts her fate and takes control of her life, proving herself an intelligent, kind and worthy daughter in law. I absolutely loved how the Gu parents instantly adopted her as their own and started treating her better than Jiusu XD The only time you saw Jiusu's dad with the proud father smile was when he was looking at Yuru. The only thing that I find conflicting is for someone so strong she cries a lot and over anything. Pretty sure she cried in 3 eps in a row. But at least her crying isn’t babyish or annoying like some FLs. Song Yi is a cute and effective actress.
Gu Jiusu. I don’t care what he said or how he acted in the beginning. He may have said it as a joke but I felt that he definitely fell in love at first sight. No person who truly dislikes someone and wants to “get back at them” would agree to pretend to like them to get on their nerves. The thought to weaponize someone’s mutual disdain for me wouldn’t even cross mind if I truly disliked them because I couldn't stomach even pretending. He thought of it himself and used it as an excuse to see her again.
But I also believe that he genuinely felt bad once he realized that the joke had led to her being forced into the marriage. Being impetuous and spoiled he clearly didn’t think that far ahead. And it’s just a testament to how golden his heart is, that he puts his feelings to the side and prioritizes her happiness before he even knows he’s in love with her. Although she was harsh with him from day one about changing his ways, his resistance is half hearted and I think he begins to realize it’s his way of winning her over. And it totally works. Even though they both agreed to dissolve their marriage once one of them win’s their bet (I honestly don’t remember the specifics of the bet. She makes a certain amount of money and he ranks first in his exam I think?) Not important. Because it never happens.
Bai Jing Ting did great in this role. His facial expressions perfectly portrayed the jokester, bratty Jiusu in the beginning. He was just hilarious and had me laughing out loud. Then in the later episodes his expressions seamlessly shifted towards sad, stern, and wise. Although I loved New Life Begins, he wasn’t able to show off his talent and range as well in that drama because of how somber that character was meant to be.

The Later Episodes: …Well, this drama felt like it NEVER ENDED. Like I said before it felt like watching 5 different stories in a row. I have no problem with a slow-burn romance, or less intimacy until the later episodes. But the plot just dragged. New Life Begins was just as long but I was able to watch every episode without FF or getting bored. I was hoping this would be the case here too.
I did not like the villain. The actor is okay. But I’ve never really fell for the sad villain origin story so I did not care about his emotional scenes. Everything he did was just annoying and added to the story being dragged out too long. And the political scenes were too tiring. If this drama’s main focus was political turmoil and war, with the romance being a side filler, then I would say the story and scenes were definitely well done. But it’s clearly marketed as a romance. Between episodes 12-15 the romance goes from 90% down to 10%, giving this drama no clear focus in my opinion. Also, I could’ve done without the desert scene and the fake death.

Overall, I just don’t think this drama was well balanced. I have mixed feelings because whereas I think everything they wanted to convey was well done, I think there were just too many extreme changes that it gave me whiplash. The comedy and sweetness in the beginning was misleading and then when things turned dark, it was like a 180. And again, not against a slow burn but it just wasn’t a believable slow burn because it’s not like it took that long to confess they loved each other and commit. That happened in the first half of the drama. But then they just became like an older married couple and skipped the passion. They would sleep next each other all the time and speak to each other/about each other as if they were an established married couple. So the fact that they never kissed or consummated their relationship until years later seems unrealistic.

Cinematography/OST: Cinematography was great. Beautiful settings, costumes and the hairstyles were cute/tasteful, not over the top or distracting.
OST: Just okay. The songs were sweet and slow.

Thank you Villian?

Summary:

A group of young nothings growing up to be everything thanks to one person's misunderstanding and revenge. Kingdom gained prosperity and peace thanks to THAT misunderstanding and revenge. Thank you Villian?

I've to say that I skipped watch most of the drama, political dramas really ain't my thing most of time, it bored it a little. I think the drama COULD have ended at episode 28 when Fan Xuan took the throne. The last 12 episodes became extremely political and mostly felt like it took a shift from a romance/political drama to full on politics.

Things I enjoyed:

1. Relationships - not just the romance but the friendships they picked up along the way and FL/ML's growth together and apart.

2. Character growth - really enjoyed the growth of the characters in the first half of the drama, especially how FL was really about marrying well, being a good wife to a capable lady and having her own ambition. ML's growth was great, but expected.

3. No misunderstandings - my pet peeve of dramas is when a relationship keeps going into breakups and patching, even for friendships. OH AND ALSO, NO EVIL MIL THANK GOD FOR THAT. (Well, evil mother/MIL existed but did not play a huge part)

Things I didn't enjoy as much:

1. Overall plot - Oh my god, ALL the politics were really caused by ONE person due to ONE misunderstanding that his father was a rapist and abandoned him???? HALP. Well the good side of this is that thanks to him, all the leads and characters grew and the kingdom(s) (4 emperors in 40 episodes lmao) went from turbulent to peaceful. DADDY ISSUES SAVED THE KINGDOM WOOTS.

2. Too much politics - this is just my personal dislike of political drama, bores me.

Overall a pretty good drama, was fun to watch, relationships/friendships especially.

Thank you villian.

Another Bai Jing Ting beloved drama.

This is Bai Jing Ting's year! I fell in love with him in You are my Hero and pretty much any drama he touches turns to gold. I want to say, his dramas are a little hit or miss for me. I think it's because sometimes I don't fully jive with the story.

I haven't seen a drama Song Yi has been in, so I was excited to see if I would fall in love with her. She's very tiny and pretty and at 33, I know she is taking care of her body, she looks so young!

The drama started out a bit slow, but good. There's that enemies to lover romance which I'm not too fond of, but since it's a Bai Jing Ting drama, the ML can't be that horrible and he wasn't. I appreciate how light the drama started and pretty much 1/3 in, you realized this is a drama, not a rom-com and I was okay with that. I wanted to see more dramatic scenes and see where the story will take me.

I like that the main couple stayed together and basically it was a story of a slow burn romance. I appreciate that they respected each other before falling in love.

The drama started to fall flat for me towards the second half as it got more into court drama and less about the main lead's love story. I can't tell you high much I get tired of palace angst if the characters aren't playing royalty.

Overall, I understand the high ratings. I love the actors and I appreciate the night time scenes (the actors were in "PJ's" and their hair was down), so hair and make-up was totally on-point. But I just found it boring at times.

Amazing drama, engaging plot and great characters

Characters are constantly evolving and circumstances that befall them are shown to have an organic impact on their worldviews. Both characters are written with clear flaws and shows convincing growth throughout the drama. The drama allows the two main leads to develop from enemies to friends to lovers, instead of prematurely planting in 'romantic' scenes right after they were forced together by a series of coincidences. The narrative is not afraid to truly challenge the characters, and it is rewarding to see them persevere even as the odds are stacked against them.

Side characters such as the Emperor and the main character's servant are also written to be realistic human beings instead of caricatures, and the narrative ensures that no character is left with just the bare minimum.

On the diversity front, the drama does well in showing a variety of female characters who excels in various traditionally masculine roles.

Plot is pretty enjoyable. Not sure whether it's really realistic on the historical front, but in my opinion there's no significant plot holes that destroys the viewing experience. Interpersonal conflicts are motivated by real differences in perspectives or unfortunate circumstances forcing people's hand, instead of people being idiots. The main villain is nothing too special but he's executed rather well.

I feel like the drama kind of stalls near the end. The main leads developed the habit of long conversations into the night, which gets boring quick but unfortunately contains vital information. Some of the development becomes...contrived. But it's not too bad, and by this time everything that's good about the drama has more than convinced me to watch to the end.
