People are being too harsh on this one

1st of all yeah i understand that some of you might not like the directing and editting of this drama, but it only happens a few times. It's kinda endurable.

+writing & directing: the idea is not one of a kind and new. A grim reaper who is cursed bc of the things he has done in his previous life. He has to find a woman to cure her pain & let him to be free. But 15 min in the show and you'll see he's not even a grim reaper! He's totally different. Then we have do jinwoo who himself has another seprated story. Not to mention gyejeol and his brother who seem to be related in many issues happening in future eps. So it's not an ordinary story line at all. But the thing is... the directors were not able to show the beauty of story. Some scenes seems to be cut from each ep. It makes the story to look cheap. Sometimes it's ok but most of the times directors have been unable to show the beauty of the story and therefore, its meaningful dialogs seem nonesense.

+ casting: flawless. Kim jung hyun be handling 3 characters is just phenomenal. Esp in latest ep (ep10) when kokdu pretends to be jinwoo, you can definitely say the difference between true jinwoo and kokdu pretending to be jinwoo. That's hella amazing
Im soohyang is good too. Her character is not written so well, but she's so relatable in many scenes. And idk why she recieves so much hate. I mean i can give you a long list of famous actresses who can't act well, but only bc they're pretty and have manu fans, no one can attack them. It's the 1st time i'm seeing her and she's decent tbh.
Other actors/ actresses are doing pretty well too. Only tae jungwoon's actress lacks a bit and it might be bc of the character it self.

+OST: SO BEAUTIFUL. Honestly i couldn't find a flaw with osts. They are just too good and completely match the vibes of this kdrama.

+my fav parts? Definitely comedy parts. I love them sm. That's why i'll rewatch this kdrama soon after it finishes.
Kim jung hyun's acting is like the cherry on top.
There too many MOOD scenes that i relate sm.
It's not boring or rushed.
It boosters my energy.
I love the locations they chose. Outfits match each character very well and the stylist has done a good job.

+things i didn't like? Story seemed to not be developing in ep5, ep 8, ep9. And i blame the director for this.
They cut too many scenes that it seemed nonesence.
The writer should've worked on romance a bit more. Sometimes there are plot holes.

But overall it's not sth that you call awful or the worst kdrama. Yes maybe kim junghyun (and other actors) deserved a better production team. Esp bc it was his comeback project but it's still okay! Hopefully his next kdrama will be better (a hit🤞🏻)

Possibly the worst k-drama I have ever seen

I like the ML as an actor so I really tried to preserver, but it's just so bad. I don't know if it's the script or the directing but honestly do not watch this. I typically enjoy anything fantasy, and the basic plot was really interesting but they have just butchered it.

There is poor chemistry between the main characters and the characters are very dramaticised in a way which I thnk is supposed to be funny but it just is not. There are quite a few different plot points also occurring at once which are easy enough to follow, but just not engaging.

(if you enjoy this then I am happy for you but I really do not understand how anyone can rate this above a 6 even being generous)

Wonderful acting, mediocre story.

Story:
Overall, the story was rather boring. At the beginning, it felt that some parts were rather confusing and I thought they were going to develop the story as it goes by to fill in the gaps but nope.

Acting/Cast:
I honestly finished watching the drama because of the wonderful cast. I think both leads portrayed their roles really well and I believe there was a scene in Ep 14 or 15 where Kim Junghyun acts a very emotional scene and I felt goosebumps.

Veteran actors Kim In-kwon and Cha Chung-hwa who were acting supporting roles delivered great acting as usual. The younger supporting actors also acted satisfactorily, although sometimes they were a bit stiff (?) but I think they still have a long way to go to continue improving their skills, looking forward!

Music:
Music was quite lovely. My favourite is Secret by Han Dong Geun, it makes me relaxed. Kudos to Kim Junghyun for singing I am as well, he has a very gentle voice. On a side note, the song Latte latte by Jihan from Weeekly is a pretty a fun song when it plays during the drama.

Scenery:
The scenery, the lighting and the artistic production of the show is really pretty.

Summary:
The only reason I will recommend this drama is if you like the actors in this drama as they do have pretty solid acting! But otherwise, I do believe there are other dramas which you may better enjoy watching.

Not Good Enough

Korean Drama " Kokdu: Season of Deity " is a fantasy drama about a grim ripper god and the girl he is attracted to.

The drama has some nice premises, with Kokdu having to adapt to the modern world and learn how to not be, well, that much selfish and his over-the-top self. The doctor theme was another nice touch, as it, theoretically, would have offered some solid subplots. However, neither was used to its fullest.

Hence, the drama ended up being a dated reincarnation love story that had no pace, with random scenes and events happening and the whole story being the two main leads bickering.

The main characters, moreover, were somehow not enjoyable, and, especially, the girl was annoying and inconsistent with what she wanted.

So, overall, three out of ten.

I am sticking to the end for Kim Jung Hyun

What is happening with this cute story? Once again I fear that the female lead is to blame, at least for me. I am invested into Kokdu's story, but I really do not care if they end up together or not. I did love how they showed the Creator in the early episodes, very fresh take.

I am ecstatic to see Kim Jung Hyun in a new drama. Was Mr Queen so good that this one just does not add up? I will stay to the end for him, but will not watch another drama with Im Soo Hyang in a lead role.

This seems to be only the second screenplay by the screenwriting pair of Kang Yi Hun and Heo Joon, Woo, perhaps that is the weakness.

How about you?

Worth the watch for supernatural fans because of the unique deity

6/10 is my rating. This is a 2023 South Korean fantasy romance with 16, 70 minute episodes.

First I provide a unique synopsis then review.  I provide a synopsis as with some, particularly Japanese and Chinese dramas, the available synopsis are not very good.  So, I hope to provide another description of the series that might help someone decide whether they want to watch it.

Synopsis

Dr. Han Gye-jeol (Im Soo-hyang) faces many struggles in life. Though working as a doctor, which is her passion, she didn’t excel in her studies and attended a mediocre college. Whenever issues arise—an inevitability in her field—her lack of elite credentials is often brought to the forefront. She is between jobs when she trips and nearly sustains a serious injury or worse, only to be saved by a mysterious man, Do Jin-Woo (Kim Jung Hyun). What she doesn’t know is that this man is no ordinary person—he is an underworld god, known as Kokdu, who was tasked with guiding the deceased to the afterlife after angering the creator. Kokdu (Kim Jung-hyun) inhabits human bodies to fulfill another part of his responsibility: executing immortals who violate supernatural laws. Kokdu inhabits the body of a doctor whom Gye-jeol was working under and, over time, develops feelings for. Their relationship starts out adversarial, but as Kokdu discovers their connection from a past life, he realizes that this unassuming doctor may be the only person with the power to break the curse he’s been placed under.

Review:

The premise was intriguing. I really liked the unique take on this god figure—not a Grim Reaper, but a God of Death who also acts as an angel of vengeance. That was an interesting twist. However, the romance didn’t resonate with me, largely because of the way the female lead character was written. I ended up not liking her much, so I wasn’t invested in her relationship with Kokdu. Despite giving it a low rating, I think it’s worth a watch for supernatural fans, especially for its unique interpretation of this deity’s role. I wouldn’t recommend it for the romance alone—it’s okay and resolves decently, but it’s not the standout aspect of the story.

Spoilers

I can mildly tolerate the female lead being a somewhat incompetent doctor. However, it made no real sense that they chose to make her a doctor with such limited skills, as it had no relevance to the overall story. I’m not sure if they were trying to make a point about elite schools or something, but that aspect just fell flat.

The female lead’s interactions with Kokdu were very frustrating. I get that it would be hard to believe someone was an actual god, so it was easier for her to think it was some kind of multiple personality situation. But when all the evidence was there that he was a god, she never questioned it. When she found out he was a god, her anger about it made absolutely no sense. I thought she was being petty and ridiculous about him fulfilling his duties as a god and killing the bad guys. Even a very basic understanding of gods suggests there are things a deity has to do—things that a higher god or the ultimate god would command. So judging him and making him feel guilty for fulfilling the duties of a god was unreasonable. She had sympathy for really horrible people, like rapists and other evil criminals, whom you would expect a god to judge, jury, and execute. That’s the way of the gods. She was also angry at him for deceiving her, but he did try to tell her the truth. She just never believed him, which was not his fault. So, she was angry with him basically for being a deity, and she acted hostile toward him.

I did not like any of the female characters in this show. The female lead was an incompetent doctor who quit practicing for a large portion of the series, and the second female character was just unlikable. The female lead’s sweet brother falls in love with her former friend, who has always been extremely toxic to her. It might’ve been somewhat forgivable if the friend had come around, but she continued to be a “mean girl” to the main character, even when she was in a relationship with her brother. The second female’s friend was also not very nice. She would give advice to the lead female character, but it was always in a condescending, mean-spirited way. So, virtually all the female romantic partners in this series were not very likable.

It also annoyed me when the female lead insisted on going along when Kokdu was trying to save her brother after he was kidnapped. I mean, if you’re a skilled martial artist or something, fine. But if you’re just going to be baggage, get in the way, and possibly become a hostage yourself, it always seems incredibly selfish and foolish to insist on going. Then, after the explosion happens, she’s shocked when he transports them, and she learns he is indeed a deity. She completely forgets about her little brother and goes off on a tangent about being upset with what he is, and I guess about him deceiving her. She completely stops trying to figure out what’s going on with her brother. So, she was so upset about her brother that she insisted on coming along, saw his cell phone, and got freaked out, but then when something unexpected happened, she completely forgot why she was even there. Was she really that dumb, or just that selfish? Neither quality was endearing.

The fantasy was great in this drama. Kim Jung Hyun (KKok Du), I like this actor, and has a beautiful smile. His role had to be kind of hard to perform playing a Deity. Death no doubt! He played his role and made his death character a little humorous and he is handsome. I became emotional watching this drama. Im Soo Hyang (Seol H), who fell in love with this Deity. She played her part very well and felt that both she and Kim Jung Hyun had good chemistry. I don’t know if this would be a rewatch for me because this subject is hard for me as I have lost several members of my family. I guess this is why I cried because this is the type of death I wish we had. There is a twist to the ending, I hope you enjoy it.

Exceptionally disappointing

May 2025
Oh dear. Amazed I didn't drop it, but I like Kim Jung-hyun, and the rest of the cast; plus I wanted to see the outcome.

Pretty awful, sadly, with dreadful dialogue, lots of shouting, plus one of the MOST irritating, unlikeable, STUPID, FL characters ever!

The actress (whom I liked in 'My ID is Gangnam Beauty'), was pretty bad too; very unnatural and poor acting in this part.

I did like the character of Kokdu (which KJH brought to life wonderfully), and his 2 assistants (plus the actors; Cha Chung-hwa as Gak Shin looked great!)
Totally underwhelming, I've forgotten a lot already (reviewing late). Too few characters that I liked, mostly stupid humour and I don't even remember the ending, but think it was poor.

I do not recommend this, sadly. Not even the wonderful Kim Jung-hyun could save it!

Too long, crappy acting, waste of time

FL acting is the worst part. Her character is insufferable, this is the second drama that I see her on and it’s pretty much the same acting like the dumbest.
I should have paid more attention when I read the comments on this drama to avoid wasting my time.
I just ended it because I don’t like to leave dramas in the middle.
This could have had like 10 episodes max. The story was not bad, but at the end the development was not appropriate.
On the other hand, thw only positive thing was the ML, he is great with two different characters, despite the storyline and the little support from his co star.

Read this before you decide not to watch it

I consider myself to have quite a good taste in dramas, as I usually don't waste time with bad stories and acting, except for when I just need to watch something that doesn't require brain work. I decided to write this review just so I can clear up at least *a part* of this drama's name. HEAR ME OUT
The first two episodes are terrible, as is the story and, more or less, so are the other episodes. No, this is not an "award winning" kind of a kdrama, yes, you will question everything about it, yes Im Soo Hyang's acting is as terrible as ever, yes, there are plot-holes. If you are in general not a flexible person, maybe you shouldn't watch it. At the same time, don't rate it with 1 star either if you haven't seen all episodes.

THE HIGHLIGHT of this drama is no one other than Kim Jung Hyun who managed to save this entire series. Please, at least out of curiosity watch a few episodes (more than 2, because, again, the first 2 are really bad) and check out his acting. He had to portray around 4 different roles, 4 clashing personalities and he did it beautifully. In contrast with others, this was my first contact with him as an actor and his great ability made me look him up so that I could eventually watch Mr queen and Waikiki while Kokdu was still airing. In my opinion, if from the beginning your mindset is about having fun, watching something really strange that makes no sense, having curiosity, you might like it, at least 50%. To be true, even I am wondering how I got to finish it, but, as I said, Kokdu's character really saved everything. Never in my life have I seen someone with so many different and entertaining ways of speaking. One more thing I have to say is that, once again, we are surprised by Jung Hyun's singing, as he sings one beautiful song from the OST

On the other hand, even if I've never finished a drama with Im Soo Hyang, I felt that I could stand her character more here. The flashback to her past probably improved her image. I really liked -shockingly- how she portrayed the final moments of her past self.
I also don't get why no one is talking about the reunion of Kokdu, Ok Shin, Gak Shin (who were together in Mr Queen). Their interaction was really funny and pleasant to watch, equally together and apart.

In conclusion, if you have no expectations and you really try to enjoy it, you can, as I believe this was their exact purpose: to create a funny and enjoyable story. I believe that everyone knew what they were doing which is a full on stupid romantic-comedy that was SUPPOSED TO BE STUPID. No one tried to remake Goblin, you can rest assured.

Looking at the rating, I'm one of the few that enjoyed this drama.

I liked it from the very beginning although I admit there was some parts of the drama that dragged, particularly towards the end, it kept me engaged. I like the concepts of soulmates and this story had it. I was rooting for them to be together after all they had suffered in their past life. Yes the ending is not satisfactory at all but in this case the journey matters more than the ending: good or bad. Honestly tho the drama could have done without all the filler but hey what can we do? I liked the acting from both the ML and FL. FL gets a lot of flak but honestly, I've seen much worse than her. For me she did a good enough job.
And I did think she had good enough chemistry with the ML. The comedy was spot on and tbh that's what I enjoyed the most about Kokdu next to the ML's acting he did a good job basically playing three characters. Yes this could have been so much better but I liked it and it is one of my faves of 2023 so far. In that case I give it an 8.0 out of 10.

A light hearted wholesome drama

Kim Jung hyun’s facial expressions are something else, he can make a funny scene 10x funnier with his facial expressions. It was such a wholesome, cutesy funny drama. Although the ending wasn’t exactly how I thought it would be, it was very meaningful that she should’ve just accepted him because lots of romantic stories with a woman falling for an evil guy is about how she changes him, I mean he did change but on his own. Im Soo hyang’s acting and vibe matched jung hyun’s veryyy well, btw she’s really pretty. Also it was refreshing to see a SMART female lead, like it’s almost always the male/female lead sacrificing themselves for the other and the other is clueless but I liked when she said “so this is the road you choose”.
