A Fictional Story with a Real-Life Lesson About Suicide and the Value of Life

Death’s Game is fictional; it powerfully reflects real emotions and thoughts about suicide. It shows that suicide might seem like a way to end personal struggles, but in reality, it leaves behind permanent scars on the loved ones who work hard their whole lives to make our lives better. As shown in the final episode, ending one's life doesn’t just end pain — it shatters the hopes and hearts of families and friends who may not even fully understand our silent battles.

The drama teaches a crucial life lesson: we do not get multiple lives like the character Yi-jae does. In real life, we have only one chance. Even when times are unbearably hard, there is always another way to move forward. Taking one’s own life is not the solution to pain; it prevents the possibility of healing and growth.

Death’s Game is a reminder that although our struggles may feel invisible, we are not alone. Others are fighting to give us hope, even if they don't always understand exactly what we need. Suicide is not a way to express our pain — living on, even in hardship, and seeking help are the ways to truly honor ourselves and the people who love us.

The drama’s message is clear and deeply moving we should strive to live our one and only life to its fullest, no matter how hard the journey becomes.

Heartfelt, Meaningful, and Brutal— Featuring Some of The Most Insane Crossovers In Drama History

"Death‘s Game" is one of those shows you inadvertently stumble on, get hooked on the first episode, and end up devouring the entire plate in one sitting; greedily overwhelming your tastebuds with all those flavors all at once.

It’s also one of those really good shows that emerge once every six years or so and leaves you feeling like an entire different person after, like you’ve just lived a once-in-a-lifetime experience solely just by watching it. Everything from the casting, cinematography, storyline, and overall production, are brilliant. Not only did the drama do an excellent job at making a strong impression right at the get-go, it also manages to maintain your attention throughout the drama through its atmospheric setting.

Don’t underestimate those 8 episodes, as you’re going to experience a roller coaster of emotions for each one of them. At times, you’re going to feel like you’re watching a melodrama; at other times, you feel like you’re watching a gripping tale about revenge, or even a psychopathic thriller. I find that the most suitable word to describe the overall plot is by using the term "mixing-pot." now, throwing in a plethora of ingredients (in this case, genre’s) may sound like a call for disaster. However, it can also produce an extraordinary concoction— one that allows the taster to experience flavors of sweetness, bitterness, disgust, revolt, and numbness, and Death’s Game is just that!

Since I haven’t read the original work, I don’t have much of a day in regards to how faithful the adaptation was to its source material. However, Death’s Game was an incredible watch nonetheless. Cinematography, soundtrack, acting, and overall production were brilliant. No complaints there. Plot-wise, it has an original and unique premise, solid pacing, and manages to captivate the audiences attention throughout with its excellent plot execution. Just when you’re a sobbing mess, the plot hits you with some thrilling scenes that’ll leave you with your butt clinched. Sure, there might’ve been a few plot holes and worldbuilding could’ve been focused on a bit more (SPOILER: reincarnation is a difficult genre to tackle. In this case, more clarification was needed to explain where the original hosts souls go after it gets occupied by our main character’s). In addition, the ending didn’t really make any contextual sense and completely disregarded the drama’s worldbuilding. However, I can overlook the first two for the most part because the experience of watching it alone was so mind-blowing and completely destroyed me.

Not to mention, this drama features some of the most ICONIC and UNEXPECTED crossovers in ALL of kdrama history. If you’re a seasoned k-drama veteran like me, you’re going to have a lot of moments where you’re like: "Ariana, what are you doing here?" since you’re going to be seeing characters like (SPOILER) Baek Hee-Seong encountering Mo Tae-Gu and find yourself stumbling for a bit.

All in all, among the 2023-2024 drama lineup, Death’s Game definitely takes the spot for the most memorable, and will remain one of the most highly-regarded masterpieces in (possibly) all off k-drama history.

Just trust me and watch it !!!

One of the best series I'd say. Direction could have been little better. He was dying not having a headache. Scene immediately followed by his deaths could have contained well concocted drama. But everything else was fantastic.
I saw some reviews saying shouldn't you have the option of killing yourself if you're a victim of human trafficking (or) some reviews said character of death is just silly child throwing a tantrum, something like that. Go watch some other series, this is not for you guys. You just watch series with no real message.

Gotta soak it in

This show is a show that is insanely justified. No cliché or the predictable crap that you would see in a psychological show. The characters are very likeable, mostly evil characters. Man carried that show well. The show gave the vibe what’s it like to go through different personality and different story of others who been through what the ML been through.

Amazing. Poignant. There's Only One of You In this World

Wow... this was spectacular on all levels. I appreciate the very very very well written approach of such a sensitive topic, while weaving in a thriller and fun series. We can always choose our actions but we cannot choose the consequences, and they tend to be far more reaching than we can ever think. Death is truly not a game and unlike this story we don't get 12 tries to learn the lessen.
Keep living, keep hoping, keep loving no matter how hard!

All the actors & acting was on point, each character drew you in and told their unique story through the protagonist. as for the lead actor, this is my favorite work of his!

Like Playing a High Stakes Game of Russian Roulette with a Demi God

9.5/10 is my rating.

Death's Game is an electrifying thriller that blends fast-paced suspense with paranormal twists. The concept of the protagonist inhabiting different bodies keeps you on the edge of your seat, with and you are never sure who he might be next. Fans of Korean drama will see a lot of their favorite actors playing the role of one of the main guy's incarnates. But it isn't light and fluffy or comedic it has a lot of emotional depth, and it explores identity, morality, and consequence through its body-swapping premise. The acting is phenomenal, with the cast skillfully portraying a wide range of characters, from the vulnerable to the menacing. And that level of acting ability is made possible by the "A" list actors that play the various roles. What surprised me was how, as the story progressed, seemingly disparate characters were tied together with creative and clever precision, which kept you hooked through every twist. However, the show isn’t flawless—its open-ended conclusion leaves some questions unanswered, which slightly detracts from an otherwise stellar experience in my opinion. If you’re a fan of high-stakes thrillers with supernatural flair, Death's Game is a must-watch that delivers on intensity and originality.

This short series is perfect for fans of fast-paced thrillers with paranormal elements, just be prepared for an ending that leaves some threads unresolved.

Spoilers

The brilliance of Death's Game lies in its ability to keep you guessing, especially with the protagonist’s constant body-swapping. The episode where he inhabits the serial killer’s body is particularly chilling—seeing the world through such a dark perspective was both unsettling and riveting. Equally intense was his time in the baby’s body, trapped with abusive parents and struggling to communicate with the social worker. These moments showcase the show’s range, from psychological horror to gut-wrenching helplessness, all interwoven nicely to the story line.

That said, the protagonist’s stubbornness can be frustrating. Despite the clear lessons the body-swapping seems designed to teach—about empathy, responsibility, or fate—he takes too long to catch on. I was a little frustrated with him at times and it made me wonder why Death decided to bother with him in particular. Or does she do that with all suicides? It wasn't clear.

The interconnectedness of the lives he inhabits is masterfully revealed, tying the stories together in a way that feels rewarding and clever. However, that became part of the reason I felt the ending did not provide enough closure. The protagonist begins reliving his own life, but it’s unclear if he gets to fully live it out. And since he is now back in time, that means none of the other events have happened yet. So, what happens with the serial killers he encountered? Can he intervene to save the baby or others? The ambiguity around his mother’s fate—did she die, or is she somewhere else?—and the status of the bodies he inhabited (were they already dead?) adds to the confusion. His girlfriend’s survival is implied since the timeline resets, but is her death inevitable, or can he change her fate? These unresolved questions make the 9.5/10 rating feel generous at times, as the open-endedness undercuts the otherwise tight storytelling. But I think that is a factor of Netflix and their desire to leave it open for additional season(s) if something is well received. It wasn't disappointing enough that I regretted watching, and I would watch it again even knowing that. But I think it helps to be aware that it is a more open ending.

Synopsis

This is a 2023/2024 South Korean drama with a total of 8 episodes, divided in two seasons with each episode running 60-70 minutes. The genres of the series include fantasy, thriller, drama, and supernatural. It blends elements of psychological suspense with metaphysical exploration, incorporating themes of reincarnation and existential reflection, often with a dark, intense tone. The central character, Choi Yi-jae (Seo In-guk), is a young man battered by seven years of relentless job rejections, financial ruin, and a devastating breakup. Despite his many efforts, nothing ever seems to go his way. He reaches the end of his rope and attempts suicide. But death is not the end for Yi-jae. Instead, he awakens in a surreal limbo, face-to-face with Death herself (Park So-dam), a mysterious and unyielding entity who is furious at his flippant disregard for life. In his final messages he even said he didn't fear death. Death took that as a personal challenge. As punishment, she sentences Yi-jae to a harrowing game: he must live and die through 12 different bodies, each on the brink of death, to learn the value of existence. If he can survive just one of these lives, he earns the chance to live it out fully; if he fails, eternal damnation awaits. Each reincarnation plunges Yi-jae into wildly different lives—a wealthy heir (Choi Si-won), a thrill-seeking skydiver (Sung Hoon), a bullied high schooler (Kim Kang-hoon), a secretive fixer (Jang Seung-jo), and more—each life interwoven with secrets, betrayals, and a shadowy figure pulling strings across his reincarnations. As Yi-jae grapples with the fragility of life and the consequences of his choices, he uncovers a deeper mystery tying his deaths together, forcing him to confront the meaning of survival and redemption.

There are supporting roles/cameos, that play the various reincarnations, which are played by Kim Ji-hoon, Choi Si-won, Sung Hoon, Kim Kang-hoon, Jang Seung-jo, Lee Jae-wook, Lee Do-hyun, Go Youn-jung, Kim Jae-wook, and Oh Jung-se.

Suicide is egoistic

It’s unfortunate how high is the suicide rate in South Korea. At least, he understood that suicide is one of the most egoistic things to do - because you think only of yourself, pity yourself, but never think of the few people who love you and how much pain you will cause them. No matter how bad your life is, there are people with even worser lifes. Value what you have and do not put yourself first. This is why i think it is egoistic.
A touching story with deep messages. Good that they adapted the manhwa truthfully.

Easily The Best

This show is the perfect show to binge when you're feeling down. The cast was 10/10 and the story always kept me on edge with how good and thrilling it was. I loved the way it portrayed helplessness and how unfair life really is. Yi-jae's story made me bawl my eyes out and the plot twist at the end (abt the man who died before him that day) blew my mind. The story was top notch and the cast understood their assignment so watch this show with no doubt in mind because I can ensure you 100% that you will certainly enjoy this amazing show!

Death's Game: Where Style Outplays Substance

"Death's Game" is a visually stunning K-drama that draws viewers in with its high production value and creative cinematography. The introduction is refreshingly concise, setting the stage without unnecessary exposition. The use of inventive camera angles, particularly the POV shots, adds a unique and engaging dimension to the viewing experience. These technical elements, combined with a parade of impressive guest appearances, make the show a feast for the eyes.

While the production shines, the writing and storytelling fall into more conventional territory. The narrative is serviceable—neither groundbreaking nor particularly deep. It has its share of plot holes and moments that defy logic, but these flaws don’t detract too much from the overall experience. If anything, the show’s charm lies in its ability to keep things entertaining despite its narrative shortcomings.

The first part of the series stands out as stronger in terms of writing, setting a solid foundation before the second half loses some of its momentum. Even so, the show never stops being enjoyable. "Death's Game" leans heavily on its aesthetic appeal and star-studded cameos to keep audiences hooked, and it succeeds in that regard.

In the end, "Death's Game" isn’t a masterpiece of storytelling, but it’s undeniably fun to watch. If you’re looking for an eye-candy drama with creative visuals and an engaging cast, this one is worth a try. Just don’t expect it to redefine the genre.

I was afraid it would be crap, but I was quite surprised. I would say it was pretty depressing, but I was in love with the bloody scenes, it was so well done (sorry, I'm already chilling, I sound like a psycho xdd). Anyway, I would say that this series will teach you to appreciate life, because it was crazy + I prayed that one character would finally die because she really annoyed me on SNS. Anyway, I really recommend it, because it was well done (otherwise it's based on a webtoon, so try reading it if you don't like the live-action series, wink wink).
