When Life Gives You Tangerines

폭싹 속았수다 ‧ Drama ‧ 2025

Can we have a thread where we try to find out the meaning of the little obscure cultural things in this show?

I'm at start of episode 4 and Gwan-sik's grandmother is throwing something (stones? beans?) at the legs of Ae-sun and her daughter walking in front of her as they are returning from the temple.

Does anyone know what the meaning of this is? Is it part of the punishment for Ae-sun or some kind of protection for the child? Maybe a practical protection against ticks or leeches since the child's legs are bare?

Maybe anyone who has similar questions can type them here and people who know the answers can contribute?

Thanks for reading! :)

Nevermind. It's explained a few seconds later.

Meanwhile, I looked up the meaning of slapping a hareubang's nose.  Jeju's dol hareubang (grandfather stones), often placed near doorways, are meant to project power and guard against evil spirits. They are also symbols of fertility and touching one's nose (or grinding some of the nose's stone and drinking it) is supposed to help against infertility. When Ae-sun slaps the nose, I believe that shows her disinterest in having another child.

Hi, I'm not well versed on this but through different shows and movies that have a shaman in them, this is what I gathered. His grandmother was throwing red beans which according to a shaman (Korea) kept ghosts away from the person. Since everyone Ae Sun knew was dead (kinda thought process people died around her) and she had a strong-willed mom the grandmother (Shaman) always says that she can see Ae Sun’s mother’s ghost around her. So she kept throwing red beans to keep the ghost and ill fate away from her
