The Double

Surprisingly enjoyable

I was never on the double train when it first came out and so many people were raving about it. I tried watching it thrice and never quite got beyond the second ep for whatever reason. I just found Duke Su rather camp and the constant wind blowing from god knows where in every scene got to me. But one day my mum wanted to watch it, I accompanied her and the rest was history lol - we binged like close to 30 eps over 3 days. I'd have to say this turned out to be a very enjoyable ride, but it's not without its flaws

Pros:
- The acting from the cast is pretty good and it was what kept me going. Special nod to Li Meng (Princess Wan Ning) - absolutely unhinged lol, Joe Chen - I've never seen her this evil and scheming and Wang XY, what gorgeous costumes he had throughout the show and if I didn't look up his age I'd have thought he was 30. He has such gravitas and presence on screen for serious roles like that but can play up the theatrical side of Duke Su as well. Also his makeup etc here is the best I've seen him in
- Story is gripping and the pace is good enough, open loops get tied up at some point and I kept watching beause I just wanted to find out what happened next.
- Chemistry between the leads is good enough. There's rapport and they play off each other well. I wouldn't call it terribly romantic or sparky, but I just liked that they had each other's back throughout in some way.

Cons:
- There are some arcs that take really really long to close off. Jiang Li's entire family story is played over the first 10 or so episodes. Tbh this was what initially put me off the series, but if you are able to sit through all of that, it turns out quite ok. There's another arc with the Ye family and yet another with Xue Fang Fei's real family so it can get a bit tedious and annoying
- I didn' find Jiang Li/Xue Fang Fei to be the empowered woman that she was portrayed to be. Plenty of times, she managed to get something done or get away with something because of Duke Su's help. She'd have died a long time ago if not for him.
- Duke Su's role in the story, he was the real pawn lol. He was jsut there to further Jiang Li's story/intentions, alot of giving from him.
- I thought their relshp from allies to romance was abit too sudden for me. One moment shes all vengeful and all, then the next moment she's super soft and worrying about him out loud. I couldn't buy Wu Jinyan's portrayal in those scenes. This is a small point though.

On a whole, one of the best historical costume drama plots I've seen in awhile. C-dramas are rarely well-written and always fall apart somewhere, so I was surprised this didn't and was actually pretty intense and pacey. I had to take mental breaks in between to rest my mind haha

The Double: because one resurrection just wasn’t dramatic enough.

One of my favorite actors, Wang Xing Yue— paired with a sharp, calculating female lead out for revenge? I was sold before the first episode even ended. This drama had everything I wanted on paper: intricate politics, smart writing, and a heroine who actually uses her brain instead of crying into the void. Halfway through, I was ready to throw this straight into my top 10 list with a perfect score. The plotting was tight, the characters layered, and the female lead’s cleverness was borderline addictive. Sure, I had to suspend disbelief that no one realized she wasn’t Jiang Li (apparently, face recognition didn’t exist in ancient times), but fine — I was willing to roll with it.

Visually, this drama was a feast. The fight scenes were crisp, the costumes regal, and the attention to detail was stunning. I practically swooned at the elegance of it all — until the infamous Qin competition scene between Jiang Li and Ruo Yao happened — and suddenly we’re summoning divine birds, celestial fields, and heaven’s gates mid-performance. What was that? A spiritual concert? A god-tier jam session? I nearly choked on my admiration and checked to see if I was still watching the same drama. And while the cinematography was often breathtaking; occasionally it felt like someone taped a GoPro to a spinning top—especially those endless circular shots that made me think I had vertigo.

Then the second half hit, and things started to fray. Not because Princess Wanning stopped being formidable — she was still the untouchable mastermind we were promised — but because she went from strategic to straight-up unhinged. Every move was precise, yet dripping with vindictive rage. I gave it grace — “let’s see where this goes” — but the narrative started ghosting its own side characters. Jiang Li’s loyal crew from the first half? Vanished like they’d never existed, only to make their reappearance in the final episodes, like suddenly the crew remembered they had been waiting in the sidelines for the obligatory reunion. And Tong’er’s death? Painful but narratively sound. But instead of metabolizing that loss, the show turned resurrection into a pastime, like the drama had a character quota to maintain. Kill one, revive another—what is this, drama whack-a-mole?

And don’t get me started on Shen Yu Rong. The same person who spent 30 episodes in strategic paralysis suddenly grows a spine in the final act? If he could kill Wanning all along, why wait until the final episode? Strategic genius, my foot. Some of the the villains’ endings were also disappointingly flat — like Ji Shuran just gets to... live? What if she Pretends madness forever? Sure, that’s justice. And the final battle? The math wasn’t mathing. Two of the most skilled fighters die while Duke Xu magically survives surrounded by enemies? Be for real. I would’ve preferred a vague, bittersweet ending instead of this chaotic mess.

Still, if I mentally snip off the last fifteen minutes, The Double remains a wildly entertaining, emotionally charged drama — stunningly crafted, beautifully acted, and almost perfect... until it tripped over its own brilliance right before the finish line.

Highly recommend this cdrama

I saw this title coming across on my tiktok for some time and saved it in my 'plan to watch'.
When I finally started watching it, I didn't quite get the hype around it, that was until I watched episode 5.

The first 4 episodes are mainly backstory and didn't really captivate me, but after those episodes the 'revenge' arc started and I was immediately hooked.

It has 40 episodes in total and I might have almost watched 20 episodes in one sitting....
With most drama's, I get very bored towards the end because you can already fill in on what is going to happen because it is pretty cliche, I don't wanna say that The Double is not cliche, it kind of is, but the story is still very captivating, so much so that it left me very excited to watch the last episodes, which I can't say for most drama's.

Overall, I enjoyed this drama very much and I think it would be a perfect starter if you just got into cdrama's.

The Double – An OST So Good, It Inspired Me to Play It

Gave The Double a second chance after putting it on hold for a while, and I was not disappointed. While the story was well-executed, what truly stood out to me was the OST. Episode 11, in particular, was unforgettable—the FL’s qin performance was breathtaking, and the music was so powerful that I’m now inspired to learn the song on my violin. That’s how good it was.

The drama is heavy on politics and revenge. The romance is present but isn’t the main focus—it complements the narrative without overshadowing the central themes. The acting was strong, and the emotional weight of the story was handled well.

And the FL’s ex-husband? The audacity of that man! His actions were frustrating, but they added to the drama’s tension in a way that kept me engaged.

The ending was ambiguous, which I actually loved. I’m still unsure whether the CP reunited in life or in death, as it’s debatable, but that open-ended nature made it even more impactful.

Overall, The Double was a well-done revenge drama, but the OST is what truly made it memorable for me. Highly recommend for the music alone!

Surprising Gem

Story
I have seen a number of ‘rebirth’ stories but this one is the most compelling and realistic of this genre IMO. In addition to the effort to inject realism the story creates a surprisingly human and well acted female lead. Although she does fall into the ‘bodhisattva’ category in her determination to seek justice for others she is not insufferable nor is she overly calculating to the point that one thinks ‘well of course she is going to win’. Her enemies are for the most part fair matches but for different reasons: some are physically strong, some are greedy, others are extremely selfish and bitter.

The male lead is well acted and supports the female lead, respecting her intelligence as their love blossoms slowly.

The story itself is not super unique but its execution is what I think makes it a great show: the good acting, attention to detail, effects, and chemistry with characters.

What I liked the most:
While some of the villains were a little flat I extremely liked the effort put into creating some of the more realistic villains for a costume drama. Princes Wanning especially had a very interesting backstory that is slowly revealed over the course of the show. Several characters are foils for other characters and showcase one of the major themes of the drama which is we are all responsible for our choices in spite of the hardships faced. Sometimes people are strong enough to make better choices and sometimes others are so scarred by what happened to them that they become terrible people and can never get away from the trauma.

Final thoughts:
Any person who researches China will understand that their media industry places several requirements on content creators that emphasizes morality, serving the nation, and evil doers never winning. That being said, I think the creators of this show did a great job of working around these rules. I have no clue if the version I watched in America is the same version that aired in China but the version I saw in America was pretty solid.

I did not give the show a perfect 10 because it isn’t the kind of show I would likely rewatch.

Loved the romance, but not the perfect heroine

First of all, the beginning was just weirdly rushed. Like, Fang Fei barely even knew this girl before she suddenly takes her identity and swears revenge in her name. At first I was like, “girl, you don't even know her??” It felt kind of silly, like the whole foundation of the story was shaky. But then I thought about it more, she basically had no choice if she wanted to survive, right? So in that sense, it makes sense. Still, I wish they’d shown more bonding between them before the betrayal, so the whole thing didn’t feel so flimsy. But okay, I got over it by the time the plot really started moving.

The politics… honestly, they were fun but confusing. There were so many names, it was hard to follow. But I didn’t hate it. I actually liked digging into it and trying to keep track, even if it felt less grounded than in Love Like the Galaxy or Prisoner of Beauty. In those dramas, the politics were tied to real issues like food, crops, canals - stuff that affects actual people and makes all the difference for me. That made it easier to connect emotionally. In The Double, it was more about elites playing chess with each other’s lives, so it didn’t hit me as hard. Definitely not as strong world-building compared to those.

Now, the romance… this was probably my favorite part. I loved that it wasn’t built on stupid misunderstandings (I hate when writers do that). Their relationship was about trust and respect, and honestly, that kind of dynamic would work in any setting, even modern. I didn’t need the politics to make me love them as a couple, but the high stakes did make their love feel even more intense.

But Fang Fei herself… she was too perfect. I know they wanted her to be this strong, smart, untouchable woman, but for me it felt a little flat. Like, it’s not that she wasn’t complicated, but making her a “superwoman” isn’t exactly hard writing, you know? If she’d had some real flaws or failures, her revenge would’ve hit harder. Instead, it was like, “of course she wins, she’s flawless.” Meh.

As for the antagonist - evil for the sake of evil. That’s just boring. If they’d made her more gray, with actual motivations you could sympathize with, it would’ve made the whole thing more layered. They do show reasoning for her character, so we can kind of understand where her character comes from, but it wasn't convincing for me.

Overall, the plot was solid, the romance was beautiful, but the characters could’ve been written better. And yeah, those melodramatic face-close-ups made me laugh more than they made me feel. So… good drama, but not perfect.

Addictive!

This is like a sugar binge in a drama form. You just can't help but eat it all at once for the rush of excitement it gives you, then wonder how come there are no more episodes ...and what do you mean it's already Wednesday?;) It is a rare drama that's so unapologetically in-your-face about being pure emotion-driven entertainment without sacrificing the storytelling.

📜The storyline can be divided into three parts:

The first focuses on the heroine's downfall, subsequent return to the capital under a new identity (coincidentaly on purpose both characters share the same nickname: A-Li) and her attempts at restoring the real Jiang Li’s reputation. Fortunately, most of the pain and suffering was reserved for the villains in this drama, so we're not hit with a prolonged account of all the wrongs done to both girls at the start. There's nothing groundbreaking here in terms of plot which involves the typical household scheming, but it's very fast-paced and entertaining.

Second part deals with A-Li trying to uncover the truth of what happened to her real family. She goes on a trip and gets herself thrown in jail (twice). We also see a lot more of the male lead, Duke Su aka Xiao Heng, as their intimacy grows, so we're treated to some epic flirting. Oh, the amount of double entendres flying around! They both loved to tease each other about everything from being a straight-faced liar to having a pretty sulking face ...and it was the FL that did the lying while the ML did the sulking.

The third part is all about the villains reaping what they sowed and the culmination of a drama-long scheme involving the emperor. We also finally explore Duke Su's past, but it gets overshadowed by the villains drama. Be prepared for the dramatic intensity to go up a few notches. Best practice: take your thinking cap off entirely for the finale.

🔥What I liked about this drama:

The revenge story is emotionally engaging without crossing into ridiculous or depressing. It doesn't sacrifice logic (too much;)) for the sake of delivering a more spectacular face-slapping. The villains have some depth to them. Their backstories show how they were compelled to turn to the dark side, making their motivations more complex and understandable.

As a female-centric drama, it stayed true to the theme. I don't remember the last time I liked a female lead in a c-drama as much. She had such a calming presence and looked enviably zen while exacting her revenge. A well-rounded character that was genuinely strong, brave, cunning but also compassionate and protective of others around her.

The drama makes a clever use of music, visuals, pathos and comedic exaggeration to evoke strong emotions and create an immersive theatre experience. Some of those stylistic choices were jarring at first, especially the frequent use of extreme close-ups with actors looking directly at the camera (stopping a hairsbreadth from breaking the fourth wall). But overall it worked great to create a feeling of being invited to join the conversation, not just being a passive observer, successfully drawing me into the scene. I found it endlessly entertaining that Duke Su would always enter or exit the 'stage' in some kind of dramatic fashion.

Although romance is clearly not the focus of the drama, it was the highlight for me. From the start, there's this feeling of intuitive understanding or soul-to-soul connection between A-Li and Duke Su. I was convinced that they understood each other without words:) For most of the drama, they're busy with their own agendas while keeping an eye on each other and offering support when needed. No matter what sorts of storms raged around them, they stood strong together with unshakeable trust in each other, never missing an opportunity to flirt. My favourite type of couple:)
The leads chemistry went a long way to compensate for the sparseness of their scenes together. Both Wu Jinyan and Wang Xingyue seemed to have a lot of fun playing these characters and looked very comfortable with each other. They had little difficutly switching between the playful, more theatrical acting and the serious, emotive kind as needed. I liked them both immensely.

The harmonious relationship between the main leads contrasted strongly with the angsty, violent, misguided tragimance that was Shen Yurong and Wanning story. I can't say I liked them, but they were definitely memorable. No effort was spared to make us feel for what amounted to an emotional warfare between the fallen, once honorable, scholar and the disturbed, possessive princess. It's quite hard to stay indifferent to them as a result. Even if the only thing you feel like doing is actively cheer for them to kill each other. I have to admit they succeeded in softening my feelings towards Wanning somewhat by the end. Mostly because, I believed she genuinely fell in love, even if her method of securing that love was completely demented. Not with Shen Yurong though, I wholeheartedly detested that murderous coward right to the bittersweet end.
I have to give it to the actors, they were both chillingly good in their roles. Liang Yongqi left such a deep impression on me as Shen Yurong, I probably won't be able to enjoy him in another role for a while. Li Meng perfected the haughty princess I-can-trample-you-like-an-ant look, but there was a bit too much theatricality in her portrayal for me to really connect with the character.

🙄What I'm not so thrilled about:

Let's be honest, the drama has derailed in the finale. I don't even know what to call that last battle scene, other than some weird visual fetish. It's like they run out of episodes to tell the rest of the story but still had a lot of expensive scenes left, so decided to include them all with little care to the storyline. Better project management next time please!

I wish there were more happy moments with the lead couple and their families in the last few episodes. That would've been a much needed (and well-earned) breather from the angsty villain arc.

Some scenes were obviously just added for shock value, including an unnecessarily high death toll. Needlessly killing off well-liked characters is a sure way for a drama to get on my shitlist. On that note, going into battle with no armour or helmet had me facepalming so hard I hurt myself.

Why on earth did they bring ML’s grandfather so late in the story? We could've had 40 episodes of their banter!! I feel robbed. Duke Su deserved to be a better developed, more complex character. It looked like they planned for it in the last arc but run out of episodes...

I didn't like the way Shuran's story arc was resolved. It was way too convenient and incomplete, especially with how long the drama lingered on her story.

This one is more of my own making. I unfortunately went to Douban to read some comments when I started this drama. One of them said that the FL looked like a blind person and I couldn't unsee it for the rest of the drama... I liked Wu Jinyan's acting on the whole but sometimes her gaze really looked empty.
