TBH I watched this after TPOB
So after I watched TPOB I was having a hard time finding another c drama to watch. I was really bad. Anyways I it was on my fyp on tictok and leaned what it was about. I love revenge c dramas more than anything so I decided to start watching it, but we have an issue now because this was really good and I can't find another c drama to watch that will beat this if you have any recommendations please tell me. I loved the acting and how it wasn't focused on just the romance it was a nice flow. I ended up enjoying this more than the TPOB. The only thing I didn't like about that was they fell in love to quickly like the moment they saw each other. Anyways this c drama music was amazing I cried a lot when sad things happened and the music played. ♾️/10 wokd recommend. Was this review helpful to you?

"芳菲落盡梨花白"
This drama is a masterpiece. The revenge the angst, its all done right. I've cried watching this, laughed, smiled, literally everything. The cast was perfect, every single one of the characters either made me want to punch them, or support them. Even though I absolutely hate the scriptwriter for all the unecessary deaths like Tong er and Wen ji and Lu ji. Especially with Tong er's d***th making me ball tears even though I already knew it was going to happen. After finishing the drama, I think my favorite episode was by far the zither episode with Jiang Li playing 芳菲落盡梨花白. The song is still stuck in my head, and the ost definitely tied together the emotion. I tried not to spoil too much, but if anyone is still deciding whether to watch the drama go right now because its 100% worth it and go in blind! Was this review helpful to you?
Watch this one if you want to feel empowered!!!
A thrilling beginning with a grand finale. I watch many C-dramas, and this one gets my vote for best in 2024. It’s a very cinematic piece about love and choices encompassed by a beautiful soundtrack. There is just the right amount of heartbreak to arouse the emotions and shed a few tears without killing the entire story. It left me feeling empowered to advance in my goals and meet challenges head on.My only real negative point is that it gets a little slow in the middle but if those episodes didn’t exist, then the plot would be riddled with holes. I do feel it could have been condensed or rearranged because like most typical Chinese dramas the spectator is confronted with separate problem arcs that our leads must conquer to advance. Many are interesting but a couple had me saying “what now” or “gah, not this again”. With that being said it’s 100% worth pushing through without skipping because the payoff is worth it.
I hate this cliché I’m about to say, but I must admit, the chemistry was epic between our leads. The supporting roles were also so well developed they could also be considered leads. The majority of the characters left me with a feeling as if they were actual people/families I know and can still visit in real life.
The series is tagged “revenge” plot but “justice” would be more suitable for those who have watched and payed attention to the message. Netflix doesn’t have the extra 5 min episode 40.5 so I had to find it elsewhere online. But the story is still complete without the extra bit and it doesn’t have an open ending.

Smart villains
Qian Shan Cha Ke writes her villains well. Smart villains make all the plotting and collusion worth the effort. Li Meng's Princess Wan Niang, Joe Chen's Ji Shu Ran, and Liang Yong Qi's Shen Yu Rong were all delivered to perfection.Wang Xing Yue's acting didn't lose to the veteran Wu Jin Yan. He was such a scene-stealer!

Best C-Drama Ever (The Ultimate Masterclass in Character)
🎬 The Gist 🎬The Double is a high-stakes, fast-paced revenge plot featuring a hyper-competent, resilient female lead #WuJinYan and a formidable, cunning male lead #WangXingyue. It is a psychological thriller, a political chess match, and a story of profound companionship. After being betrayed and literally buried alive by her scholar husband, Xue Fangfei survives and assumes the identity of Jiang Li—the abandoned daughter of the Grand Chancellor—to seek justice. The protectors are refreshingly confident without the need to dominate, and the villains are brilliantly layered in shades of grey.
💡 🌟 The Modernity of its Themes: Breaking the "Purity" TropeSet in a strict Neo-Confucianism era, The Double radically rejects the "purity" trope by refusing to weaponize a woman’s marital past as a source of shame. There are no insecure monologues where Xue Fangfei feels "unworthy" of the unmarried Duke Su due to her past marriage or lack of virginity. Her protectors, Xiao Heng and Ye Shijie, never reduce her value to her marital status, boldly proving a woman's worth lies entirely in her intellect and resilience.
🦊 Duke Su / Xiao Heng: 🕺 The Secure WarriorHe is the perfect antidote to toxic, controlling male leads. Powerful yet deeply secure, he never seeks to diminish or dominate Fangfei. Wang Xingyue masterfully uses micro-expressions—a tight jaw, moist eyes—to convey a storm of protective worry. He fiercely respects her autonomy, letting her lead her own battles while he silently neutralizes deadly variables behind the scenes. Ultimately, he provides absolute psychological safety; the heavily traumatized heroine can only sleep soundly in the presence of the kingdom's most lethal warrior.
♟️ Xue Fangfei / Jiang Li: 💃🏻 The Expansion of the SoulHer journey marks profound moral growth. She transforms from a broken woman seeking narrow personal revenge into a leader willing to risk everything to protect innocent strangers. Her emotional healing transitions beautifully from her broken courtyard declaration ("Use my life as a chess piece") to a playful, confident partnership with Duke Su as they legally tie their fates together to conquer the political landscape.
🏛️ The Paradox of Weak Men & Grey Villains 👽
The drama proves that righteousness without confidence is easily manipulated. Minister Jiang is an upright statesman but a domestic coward, easily manipulated into abandoning his daughter for household peace. In contrast to the secure masculinity of Duke Su and Ye Shijie, the villains are masterclasses in tragic psychology. Shen Yurong is a delusional narcissist who reframes Fangfei's disgust as "obsession" to justify his crimes, while Princess Wanning is a shattered antagonist whose toxic madness stems from a brutal past as a political hostage.
🔥 The Masterful Slow-Burn & Domestic Trust ❤️
Following Tong'er's tragic death, their bond deepens from strategic allies to a devoted, unshakeable couple. Duke Su completely abandons his detached spymaster persona—instinctively discarding clothing that triggers her trauma, and playfully oversharing court secrets like a husband debriefing his wife. Fangfei's reckless nature pushes his composure to the breaking point; the news of him trading the Fish Army talisman for her freedom causes her to break down in panic, finally forcing them to discard their masks. Their dynamic permanently shifts into an unbreakable, transparent front, anchored by his ultimate vow: "Live your life to the fullest and never compromise to please others, not even me."
🔁 Why this is perfect for rewatching: ❤️❤️❤️
True romance in this thriller isn't about grand speeches; it's about practical, respectful actions in the middle of chaos. Every single time you rewatch, you uncover another layer or nuance to a character or an event. Whether it is her jumping on his back out of a subconscious reflex of absolute trust over a tiny rat, or the micro-shifts in their political maneuvering, every viewing reveals new psychological layers. An absolute masterpiece.

⚖️ Postscript: On the Violence and "Misogyny" Claims
Critics claiming the brutal violence against female characters makes the drama misogynistic, confuse historical accuracy with narrative intent. Modelled after the turbulent Five Dynasties (907–960 AD) and Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD), the script accurately reflects an era of harsh institutional cruelty toward women. However, The Double removes passive victims. It gives women absolute agency as the primary drivers of the political chess match. The complex "vamps" are tragic products of a brutal era, explicitly proving that the true villainy lies in weak, cowardly men who held power but lacked the spine to protect them.

Visual Storytelling at Its Best
This drama has truly earned its praise, and for good reason. If you're just getting into Chinese dramas and looking for an amazing female-centric revenge story, "The Double" is the one to see. The visuals are stunning, featuring amazing cinematography, beautifully choreographed fight scenes, and only a few slow episodes (and that’s always a blast in my book with historical C dramas). It stands out as a top-notch palace intrigue drama. The story centers on Xue Fangfei, who faces betrayal by her husband and adopts a new identity to seek revenge. While the romance with Duke Su unfolds as a slow burn, it is ultimately satisfying. The chemistry between the leads is truly remarkable, and some of the best moments come from their interactions.
I liked the parallels the drama was trying to show us with what it would be like for our female lead to actually be with the man who cared for her as opposed to the disaster of her first marriage.
However, I do want to warn viewers who are seeking a heavy romance—this drama isn't that. This is a revenge-heavy drama about a woman hell-bent on restoring justice for everyone who didn’t get it.
Romance, here is just a cherry on top. I do think that some of the best episodes were of Duke Su and Xue Fangfei interactions.
I do have things to mention I believe were unnecessary.
Several elements I found less enjoyable, particularly after episode 30, where too much time becomes focused on the backstories of the villains, especially the Eldest Princess. Although it's important to understand her character, the amount of screen time felt excessive and could have been better balanced throughout the series. Those scenes were draggy and dialogues could have been cut in half.
One point of frustration was the abrupt cut of a kissing scene between the main leads near the end (it was somewhere after episode 30). Their romance doesn't feel fully bloomed until the final episode where the director finally chooses to include proper kissing scene. I think reason why it threw me off is because the drama itself does not gloss over bloody and violent scenes and sexual violence. So cutting off intimate interaction between main leads seemed extremely strange. But this is just me because I like my romance with lots of skinship if there is romance. otherwise, I don’t want any teasing with romantic upload if we are not going to get it in full.
For those who crave a clear happy ending, my recommendation is to stop watching the last episode after the marriage scene. The last ten minutes felt unnecessary and out of the left field.
While I appreciated the aesthetics of the closing moments and understood why the writers decided to go in that direction, I couldn't shake the feeling that the leads deserved a more definitive conclusion. After being so invested in their struggles for 40 episodes, the final twist—suggesting a meeting in the afterlife—felt like a punch to the gut. Our heroine ends up in misery, which feels undeserved after all she's been through.
I understand that some dramas aim for realistic endings, but after 40 episodes of suspension of my belief, I wanted a clear at least happy for now ending. Therefore, I docked half a point for that creator’s choice.
Overall, despite a few missteps, the cinematography, writing, and production value make "The Double" a must-watch.
Memorable episodes for me or episode 17 where our female lead is drunk. That scene in the rain was amazing.
Another memorable scene was when Xue Fangfei played a folk piece at the academy exam.
Despite my dislike of the ending, I actually did like the way the last 10 minutes were executed. Aesthetically that last sequence was very touching.

Predictable plot. Similar twists is repeatedly used. In the middle of assassin attack or dangers main casts can waste precious seconds to look at each other with love and talk stupid. Happens too many times spoiler. Like you're in the middle of a good dream and you're abruptly interrupted for a few seconds and then force to continue the dream which by this while isn't so good anymore.Main actress is way too old for the role like a decade too old. Her puffy eyes betray her age. She is poor in comical moments. She isnt pretty. Casting numerous prettier and younger looking supporting and guest role actresses doesn't help her. Like making her age more obvious. Main actor role all too familiar and repeatedly used in too many period drama. High fighting skill, make little mistake, can predict all enemy's move like always and has bad childhood. Phui!!!

I'll forever think of him as the Duke of Coolness
This is the first drama after JOL I'm giving a 5 star on mydramalist. This is how to write a story, our dramalands esteemed scriptwriters.I'll miss this drama, originally planned to start watching it all over again after it had finished airing but I don't think I can because of Wanning, after seeing her background story, I can't see her as evil anymore and somehow I think that'll change the tone of the drama for me should I rewatch so soo. Sigh
I recommend wholeheartedly.

Give it a try if you havent already
This show was really good, It was one of the best drama’s I watched this year. The main leads were amazing together, such lovely chemistry. The music was perfect and scenes were well shot, suiting every scene just perfectly. I loved all the little twist and turns here and there. The costumes were fantastic so beautiful and colourful, from the beautful dresses and headpiece worn by the women to the beautiful mens wear. I recommend if you havent already give this drama a watch, it was worth it. ♥️Was this review helpful to you?
decent revenge drama as long as you can believe the opening premise
This drama was probably the first good drama I have seen in 2024. There has been a lot of sub-par dramas released so far in 2024 so this drama was a welcome change. If you can believe that a child can be framed for a crime they didn't commit (by the evil step-mother no less). If you can believe a father couldn't recognize his own daughter (even after 10 years), If you can believe said father wouldn't visit his own child for 10 years. you know, just to check up on her. If you can believe a husband couldn't recognize his ex-wife after a few months apart (hey your daughter looks an awful lot like my ex-wife) . Then the rest of the drama is pretty good. For me the main knock was believing the opening premise that one person could impersonate another without any changes to their appearance, you know, just jump in and say hey, I am now Jiang Li, and you should just believe it .
Once you get past the initial set-up of the drama, the story and plot are pretty good and the drama moves right along, very little filler scenes. Not once did I fast forward through this drama. I liked the fact that the main villain in here was the psycho princess, a nice change from other dramas. This drama has a good revenge story line and is worth the watch......as long as you can buy off on the opening premise.

The best 1st quarter historical drama 2025
In my opinion this is one the best historical c-drama for the 1st quarter of 2025, I enjoyed every single episode of the drama, the main plot and sub-plot were very well written.A perfectly pace drama with only small amount of loophole. The costume and cinematography is one of the best accompanied by great OST.
The character arc for main characters portrayed really well by both actors. The FL is a strong will powered lady able to outsmart most of the people and the introduction of ML Duke Su during 1st episode was epic and one of the coolest entrance of male character other than Ling Buyi. Their chemistry are great, I cant even tell the age gap between the actors were huge.
