Eu.
Was this review helpful to you?
Depressing, but Memorable.
This drama is steeped in sepulchral undertones and it's evident that the entire message has a chance of missing its mark. It's not a 'story' per se, rather the journey of the characters in particular. There is no mincing of words – An introverted, intelligent high-schooler, Mitsuru, loses his person, the popular Yamada Koichi in an accident, which happened right beside him. But, the ‘dead’ Koichi gets up in spite of clearly fatal injuries that should have killed him.
Mitsuru now helps his ‘living corpse’ of a friend to get back on track, but he starts to slowly realize that his presence is the only thing that keeps Koichi corporeal.
As a viewer, it's painful to watch as it is evident that Mitsuru was in self denial. He keeps trying to come up with reasons for Koichi to stick around and Koichi, knowing him, attempts his very best to keep Mitsuru happy.
In a way, Mitsuru, a usually quiet individual, speaks up and tries to get Koichi to live out his last wishes.
Mitsuru is a particularly hard character to play without appearing emotionless, so kudos to the actor for not making him seem indifferent. Koichi was much easier, but his story was sad in a way.
I watched this in January, and right now, all I can remember is Mitsuru crying. Hence, why I used the word 'memorable' fir the title.
It's depressing from start till the end. Maybe that's the pain of losing someone.
It's good for a slow watch, but I'll not suggest it to anyone who has had a difficult time getting over the death of a loved one.

My number one, as well.
Wow, I din't really expect the story, it makes me want to read the novel. Everything is unpredictable and I love how everything turns out. This is the most unique BL I've seen, such a strong entry, I can say.The casting were good and the emotions were delivered well. I was kinda confused at first because from the site I've watched, It says "Koichi is indeed alive" but unfortunately, he was not. I love how he was taking what was given to him which kept him alive, that alone says a lot.
I was really afraid as I get to the last episode because I already feel that he will be gone. That last episode makes me crying for minutes and that was such a good cry. This was the first time I never wished for a sequel. That ending was perfect and I can live on that. I hope Micchan would love Koichi until his last breath.
Nevertheless, This was a real top tier, I will never stop looking for the novel.

A True Masterpiece
I started watching this series without knowing anything about it. What I witnessed over the eight episodes was just remarkable. A mixed blend of coming of age, love, death, the bond of friendship & even the supernatural.Komiya Rio & Inoue Sora are just beautiful on screen together. They each give wonderful performances, blending their roles into each other.
The writing is so outstanding and so original. It's like no other story I've seen, building on each episode with such unique directions of the plot.
Anyone that has experienced the death of a close friend or soulmate will truly breakdown watching some of these scenes between these two "Number Ones"
I was kind of hoping for a happy ending, but in a way, I guess it couldn't have gone any other way.
Definitely a must watch and rewatch with tissues in hand. It's a real tear-jerker.

This is definitely my eternal yesterday!
Btw I’ve seen this when it aired and wrote it a lot of how my journey went so in case your confused. Btw there will be spoilersI can’t tell if this ending is supposed to be sad or happy, I felt out of all the Jp BL’s tin 2022 Eternal Yesterday was the best one I loved it from the beginning. I was here from the start and have broken down crying some times. If a drama can make you cry it’s a good one. I think I could watch this drama over and over and will still get the same reaction of sadness and wanting to cry while watching it. I loved how there the literal relationship of black cat and golden retriever. I have to say that steamy scene was literally so good for only being a few minutes like I was screaming when it happened. I got surprised when Minchans mom was also a living corpse and the time skip to five years later, when no one could remember Koichi’s living corpse. It was nice that even he wasn’t a Yamada family member the mother still let him hold his baby sister first. I also love this ost the lyrics are so meaningful and even one of the titles are Called Eternal. I do feel this show will always live in my mind and heart because I love it so much. Anyways I do recommend this series.

Beautiful and Heartbreaking
I just don’t have words for how amazing this series is. I rated rewatch ability low because I can’t take the heartbreak again but please do yourself a favor and watch this beautiful series. I think the acting the story telling the visuals and music are all too tier. I typically don’t watch series with sad ending but I gave this one an exception and I’m not disappointed. Man this one will leave an impact on my heart. I really want to see more from this director and the main talent. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭Was this review helpful to you?
FIRST TIME WATCHING JAPANESE DRAMA
I always watch anime but never in my life I would expect myself to watch Japanese drama. This drama has led me in watching Japanese dramas in the future. I can't say that this is the best BL drama I've watched so far but the story is not your typical kind of romance. Although I'm quite lost on what's happening in the first episode, it brings me back on the right track on the following episodes. The love story of the main leads breaks the wall of natural laws. Love can bring miracles.
Do Japanese dramas always have less background music or is it just this drama only? During the emotional scenes, I was waiting for the background music but it did not happen. I'm quite disappointed on this part.
Overall, this is an 8/10 rating for me. This is a great opener for me to Japanese dramas.
If you watched "Peach of Time" (Korean x Thai drama) and loved it, you will also love this drama.

Eternally reminiscing about their yesterday
It's insane.. that was SO GOOD, seriously. How can such drama series make me feel like kicking my feet giggling, be laughing, getting scared/anxious, pulling my hair out then make me cry a river in all episodes!I'm not a fan or into any romance drama where the MLs doesn't end up together or something tragic happened but this made me feel some other type of way. Usually, I would very much want a different ending or wish I never watched it but with this one, it's 50/50 wanting a different ending and content with the ending, even though it hurts, I think rewatching it can make you see it more clearly and it makes it more better than your first watch.
Also this is just me ranting but why can't they make them be together in a normal state for at least for two episodes before doing the deed, it was kinda out of pocket and so sudden on what happened on ep 1!!
The second episode tells you the whole plot, with him being a living corpse and them 2 being lovey-dovey unknowingly haha but still it manages to keep you interested by adding other things to the plot(the classmates, teachers and the family side-stories).
Then the rest of the episodes are very much into being a metaphor and superficial, realistically koichi already died on ep 1 and the series continues as micchan's coping and mourning over him.
It's crazy how deep the story is, even though it's unrealistic, you can connect it to reality thus making it more heartfelt. the chances of someone dear to you suddenly passing away cause nobody is secured in this life and the people that was left is burdened to deal with it. It is definitely the "what ifs" of a person who thinks of yesterday when the person that died was still alive during those times. Thus, keeping them alive by recalling memories and thinking of the "what ifs" just like micchan does that kept koichi alive.
My favorite scene would be the time they first met, they communicated with their eyes, it was a love at first sight hahaha I kept replaying it and kept giggling to myself. Additionally, their first kissing scene, it was so hot! I love it when the MLs fight then 'make up' in the end with passion hjahahjsfjv
The side characters are lovable as well, you can't hate anyone. They are side-characters but they still bring a dish on the table and not just existing on the bg like other jbls lol everyone had a story and contribution to koichi and micchan and you may hate them at first but at the end, they were very reasonable with their actions thus making you like them. They also I think passively know about koichi and micchan's relationship (they did tell their teacher and classmates but not their family but even so their families considers the other their part of family already iykwim).
It was inevitable and unfair to what happened to Koichi but with his short time, he made a mark on this world that he was alive and somebody will always remember him, also dying knowing that he was loved and cherished;;
and to Micchan, he was guided by him to be able to open-up to other people and be a better version of himself but it is sad that he was left alone and still lingers on their memories together on the last ep when he went to the place they had their vacation on.. TT
One of them died and one of them lived on but for each other.
We can say it was a "right person, wrong time", I think people who lose their loved ones would relate to this series a lot.
I resent the rain so much!! since when it comes you just know you will cry later on but the first time they met or should I say the longing stare they had that I loved so much!! was during the rain so somehow, the rain is the miracle maker. Even the rain I can't hate. I love everything about this!!!

An interesting depiction of grief, love, and yearning for yesterdays long gone
I never thought that a first love type of high school "BL" story with a supernatural twist about a "living corpse" boyfriend could make me cry like this one did.POSITIVES (for me):
• Both main leads' 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 enough. The director and actors knew what they were doing. The emotional scenes were able to pierce my heart and give me an unexplainable feeling of pain. In short they were able to make me empathize to the characters and the experience they were going through.
•𝗡𝗼 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗟 𝘂𝗸𝗲/𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀. Despite being set in highschool, there's no naive, pure uke or a super popular heartthrob seme. The uke(?) is cold and distant but not unlikable or boring, and his character makes sense bc of his upbringing. The seme(?) is a bit of a typical friendly, more optimistic character but in a realistic way.
- Tho the leads have opposite personalities, they kinda balanced and positively influenced each other so their attraction made sense (opposites attract as they say).
• Despite not having very big impacts on the story, some 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴. I especially liked their friends (the pres, vice pres, and psychic classmate) as well as Koichi's family and wished to see more of them.
• 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸. Every time I hear that piano bgm i can't help but feel a sting in my chest. The opening and endings songs also suit the story well despite having a more "upbeat" sound (i love me some misleading OPs and EDs, very anime-like lol).
• Despite the emotional theme, it 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮 or telenovela-ish way of presenting the story. No fillers, no unnecessary conflicts or present time misunderstandings, no unnecessary characters that hinder the couple, etc.
- Because of this, it managed to have a 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲.
• 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 that weren't too confusing or "trying too hard to be deep".
• Cinematography is not grand but fits the vibe of the story.
• It's not a surprise or last minute tradedy type ending bc as early as the first episode our lovely white truck of doom makes an appearance and throughout the rest of the drama there's a somber mood so I already knew how it was gonna end (and I 𝗴𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿). So if you're not a fan of "bad endings" then I suggest rethink before watching instead of later complaining that it was "too depressing".
LESS POSITIVE/MIXED FEELINGS (and some personal gripes):
• Depending on how much suspension of disbelief you have, 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 may affect your immersion as a big amount is needed here. Some details of the accident or Koichi's "living corspe" condition were confusing, unrealistic, or weren't completely explained (i won't go into details bc I'm confused myself but im sure more hypercritical or sharp minded viewers won't help but notice them).
- However, bc I didn't want to spoil my experience and immersion, I just excused the unexplainable stuff as supernatural logic lol.
• Depending on your preferences, you may find the drama to 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 "𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰" 𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀.
There's no such things as lovey-dovey cuddling or cute dating scenes. There also weren't enough scenes of the leads' dating period prior to the incident. Honestly I didn't mind much as the overall vibe of the drama wasn't meant to be sweet and romantic and it wasn't just a love story after all.
• It 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 and uneventful for some (or maybe even boring) as there weren't much big or dramatic occurrences. We also spend a lot of time on the main character's thought process and recollection of the events.
• Production values are not grand or exceptional, but they were appropriate enough for the setting and story.
• Rewatch value may be on the lower side, unless you want to experience the suffering again. Personally I may rewatch whenever I want to have a good cry lol.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
Despite not being perfect, I settled with a score of 10 mostly due to personal bias and this show's emotional impact on me (it reawakened my crybaby side and even got my rotten brain to do some thinking lol). I won't call it the best BL I've seen but it's definitely one of the most memorable among Japanese BLs. It reminded me once again that losing a loved one is an inevitable reality which, like Mitchan, all of us may have to face one day. And just like him I believe the pain, longing and desire to hold on will not be easy to face but our beautiful memories of those yesterdays can become our strength in facing new tomorrows.

Very sad, but it’s so well executed.
Wow, this was one of the best shows I have ever seen. I’m flabbergasted. So sad I cried but it was worth every single tear. It’s shocking how much passion they put into this show. The acting was spectacular, for people to see so young and simultaneously so talented is enviable. Do yourself a favor and watch this show if you haven’t and have a box of tissues. I cannot stress that enough because you will need them. Was this review helpful to you?
