The first five seasons of Street Dance of China marked the transition of street dance from a niche culture to a mainstream culture. Breaking, a form of street dance, has even been recognized as an official competitive sport in well-known global sports competitions like the Asian Games and the Olympic Games for the first time, leading to the Chinese street dance culture flourishing and becoming influential. Season 6 exactly marks the beginning of a new era for Street Dance of China. In season 6, we will bring together the top dancers from all over the world, providing them with a platform for fair competition and cross-cultural communication, and aim to show the audience how young street dancers around the world keep challenging themselves, uniting and collaborating through the creation of dance art, how they bridge the gap between different cultures using the common language of dance, how they exude youthful energy in a subtle manner, and how they better face the world and embrace the future with a united and progressive posture, as well as with confidence and fearlessness. Enjoyable Season but Unfair and Biased Judging
Finally catching up on this season, and just finished episode 10. Although I'm really happy that the format of this season is similar to season 3 and 4 (finally! because season 5 was terrible), I feel like the judging is very unfair and at many times, felt rigged. For example, when Jay Park and Ding's team had to compete using the same Japanese song for their performance, Jay Park's team received more towels from the audience and should have been the winner. However, they decided to add 5 judges to the mix and each judge is essentially worth 100 towels and there are only 86 audience towels total. Because they gave each judge so much weight in the final scoring, that one biased judge can easily skew the overall score of any team, then the losing team can easily win. What was the point of having the audience there when the judges' scores carried so much weight? They should have just kept it like previous seasons and let the audience score performances and have judges score battles.
Overall, I did enjoy this season and it's refreshing to see so many new dancers in the competition. I'm glad they added the older dancers starting in episode 3 because it gave the audience a chance to get familiar with the new dancers first.
Jay Park and Ding were also great additions to the show and Vaness was definitely more chill in this season compared to season 1.
I just wish the judging could have been more fair. I also didn't like that when they were supposed to eliminate members, the teams didn't have to announce the eliminated members right away but the entire team had the chance to perform in 2-3 more segments before the captains chose who to eliminate. I felt that was completely unfair for the teams that won previous rounds and didn't have to eliminate as many members since this gave the losing teams the advantage to utilize ALL their dancers still. It was completely unfair and negated any advantage of winning previous rounds.
After season 3 and 4, I feel like SDC is just going downhill. Season 6 is better than season 5 when it comes to the format and I'm glad the team captains aren't just "mentors" and were captains again. While I miss Yibo from previous seasons, I really hope they don't come out with season 7 unless they can make some changes that will make the judging more fair.
