The finest level of Korean cinema

No one would have expected another flight action movie that could give 'Emergency Declaration' a run for its money, and yet this one has done the impossible of Korean cinema which surpasses it in both technical aspects and even more so in its storytelling. The script is so well written and the plot design is having pin point accuracy, every single emotion is precisely placed, the political sentiment from both sides were also well resonated. Action sequences are terrifying enough and the final sequence is simply the best thing you could ever have in a Korean movie. The vintage setup is also visually stunning, everyone's acting is also ridiculously immersive, it is seriously a phenomenal Korean production at its finest level of commitment.

So heartbreaking I couldn’t stop crying

On a light note, the way the movie started with how everyone was so clueless about planes, those simple joys before everything went wrong….

I’ll add my comment first then add more on my review

The thing about this is that it’s based on a real story
So the backgrounds of each characters, the pain, the fear, the choices and regret, it was all so raw and heartbreaking

Yongdae wasn’t just a hijacker, he was tortured as a kid by psychos who labeled anyone as a communist
Taein lived through the first hijacking with his choice of letting them pass the boarder, was that the right choice? Or would he choose differently

Everything was just so heartbreaking and the acting honestly they couldn’t have picked better actors, my jingoo, my heart ached for him and being his fan, I could sympathize with that backstory, but his actions of course didn’t make it easier so that’s the whole emotional turmoil, everything was so intense I couldn't stop crying

It’s like a domino effect “what if”
Taein letting the first plane pass which resulted in 11 people being unaccounted for till now, it only means they were imprisoned or murdered or worse, labeled communists

And thus, this time he decided to make sure everyone is safe, and if he died, atleast they’ll know and won’t live in dread
That’s a heartbreaking choice, he literally threw himself on a bomb to save people.

Those times honestly are so confusing for me, were they witch hunting people and calling them communists just because?
Cuz yongdae’s life, he was abandoned by his brother, his town threw hot water on kids, they put false accusations on him, and his mom died…. When “normal” people labeled others so easily, doesn’t it make sense he turned out so messed up?! Who’s to blame?!

And we will never know the truth past that first hijack, did they really give the first hijacker money, did they choose to stay behind cuz they were done with their government
Did they ask for money for returning the hostages? Did they use the plane technology? Did SK refuse to pay more for the government workers that they didn’t return them?

But all those things fueled taein, to protect them and hide their identities, to return their bodies, or to return them safe

He was a hero, yongdae was a victim, who’s to blame? Atleast things did change, those were really black times for Korea
With this dire action, it also stopped others from trying I guess

Hijack 1971 is a movie about a plane hijacking incident, a plot that's been done many times. However, for me, "Hijack 1971" creates a different impression after watching it. Why? Because the main characters, both the protagonist and antagonist, have clear backgrounds, and the performances of Ha Jungwoo and Yeo Jingoo make this a very good movie. So this movie is not just about " surviving" the hijacked plane situation.

I also really enjoyed the supporting characters played by Chae Soobin, Lim Semi, Kim Dongwook, and Moon Woojin. Even though they don't have as much screen time as Jingoo or Jungwoo, their roles add to the movie's atmosphere.

I can't comment much on the technical aspects, but I am quite impressed with the cinematography. The camera movements dramatize the scenes (both outside and inside the plane). The unique costume design, which accurately represents the past, adds a plus point to the movie as well.

This movie is perfect for your weekend, with a mix of suspense and emotion. Enjoy watching!

Story of a Hero

This is a story about real life heroes. Too often in films, the main characters go on revenge mission or do violent, morally unacceptable things, but the main character in this film, pilot Tae-in, is an example of a real hero who is guided by moral virtues. We could almost say that he is a saint. Speaking from my Christian perspective, I would say that the attitudes and actions of the main character are an authentic example of Christian behavior in dramatic situations.

The film begins with a very interesting plot, in the middle, the story becomes a bit tiring because the events on the plane do not really change anything in the plot, but the finale of the film is excellently done, full of adrenaline and drama. Watching the planes fly was for me more exciting than the interaction of the passengers in the hijacked plane. I also liked one scene on the plane when the frame freezes and we have the opportunity to see a panorama of all the passengers in a dramatic moment. However, that scene stands out from the rest of the film, which dramatizes historical events and ultimately gives us a positive inspiration.

A heartbreaking and inspiring movie

I was not expecting this movie to be such a punch in the gut. The writing was tight, the pacing was excellent and if I would have liked a longer epilogue and to spend a bit more time outside of the plane, I must say that I was properly captivated (and in distraught) for the full duration of the film. It managed to say so much in a relative short amount of time. It featured an heroic character as well as a pitiful and hateful villain. And the fact that it was inspired by real events is giving it a bitter note with a long lasting impact.

The acting was excellent. I love Yeo Jin Goo and here again, he is brilliant, portraying a role that could have really been just one note and instead giving it nuance and perspective. Ha Jung Woo is definitely up to par and does not disappoint as well. Both brought me to tears, when I was just expecting thrills and action, I got very emotional. The production was really solid : all the historical aspects of air flight from that era in time was really interesting and well made. Action sequences were intense and very believable. The soundtrack was not overly present but very fitting for the epicness and dramatic of the plot.

I would strongly recommend this movie if you are looking for very well acted and emotional action story. It has a lot of nuances in addition to a lot of intense moments, and it will definitely keep you on your toes.

Intense and surprisingly emotional

I came across Hijack 1971 while I was scrolling through Yeo Jin Goo's filmography because ever since I watched him in Beyond Evil, I've been meaning to watch more of his films and series. The plot caught my interest, I like action thrillers and movies based on real events so I decided to give it a try, expecting a nail biting film.

What I got however was much more.

From the very first scene, the movie impressed me with its sound design and editing. The flying scenes felt too real and I almost felt dizzy at times. Throughout the whole film, the sounds of the airplane enhanced the intensity of the events. If I had closed my eyes, it might have been as if I were in this plane myself. The camera angles were steady and sharp and the usage of CGI effects was clever and practical.

The production was very good. I really liked the settings and the different costumes, they captured the essence of '70s very accurately. It was also very interesting to learn more about how airlines used to be back in 1970. I had no idea that the passengers weren't able to book their tickets beforehand, therefore it was a "first come, first serve" situation. Watching the passengers run towards the airplane in order to secure a seat was...peculiar to say the least and I laughed harder than I should. It's always great to learn something new!

I especially liked the color grading. The warm, yellow tones provided a sense of safety at first and danger after. I got some vintage vibes and the movie somehow gave me a feeling of those action films from 2010s. During some more serious scenes, the tones were more solemn and darker, establishing a grim atmosphere that accompanied the whole story.

Hijack 1971 is by far one of the most intense movies I've watched. There were so many scenes that gave me huge amounts of anxiety. I feared for the passengers lives and I was always on alert mode. When Yong-Dae threatened the people inside the plane, my heart jumped. I swear to God, every time some of them attempted to stop him, I almost wanted to scream at them. My brothers and sisters in Christ, I understand you are in a crisis but what made you think you could take down someone who threatened you with bombs and a gun? The worst part is when they succeeded at taking him down, they were still unable to stop him! I was ready to enter inside my screen in order to disarm him myself!

An aspect that was handled very well (much better than I thought, if I want to be honest with myself) was the characterisation. I didn't expect a lot since I wasn't interested in the characters themselves but the story and yet as the movie went on, I found myself worrying about them. I liked the montage of them before and after they entered the plane. The film provided us with some context in order to understand their backgrounds and relations which helped me to connect more with them. Once the plane got hijacked, their teamwork and attempts at providing comfort to each other highlighted their dynamic even more. It was interesting and yet so sad to see these strangers combine their power in order to survive, always at risk of death. Although I expected to be indifferent towards them, I quickly found myself rooting for the passengers' survival.

Of course the characters that stole the spotlight were Tae-In, the pilot portrayed by Hang Jung-Woo and Yong-Dae, the hijacker portrayed by Yeo Jin-Goo. It was my first time seeing Jung-Woo and I couldn't have chosen a better movie. He portrayed Tae-In concern and fear perfectly. You could see from his expressions and body language how frightened he was and yet how determined he was to do anything in order to ensure the passengers' safety. Calm, collected and stern, he brought a peculiar kind of comfort. Of course the story did not leave much room for these luxuries, when I watched him, I felt safe, as if I knew I shouldn't be afraid. I am aware of the fact that the events on the film are portrayed in an over dramatized way for the sake of fiction but Jung-Woo did justice to the real pilot and conveyed his sense of duty towards the people he had to protect.

As for Jin-Goo, all I want to say is that he needs to play the villain more often. He delivered a terrific performance. I wasn't able to predict what he would do next and he constantly made me feel uneasy. The tone of his voice and his body language indicated attention and expressed the hijacker's frustration and desperation. He was a bomb that no one could know when it would blow and the people on the plane had to walk on eggshells in order to not trigger it.

I expected from the movie to make me feel anxious and thrilled and it succeeded. What I didn't foresee was that I'd end up bawling my eyes out. I am not exaggerating when I'm saying that I cried throughout the whole final act. 20 minutes of crying! I know that it sounds too dramatic but I couldn't help but feel moved watching Tae-In help with the plane's landing, even though he was severely injured by the bomb. I hoped and hoped for a different outcome, even though I knew my hopes were futile but of course miracles do not happen - at least, in real life. Tae-In's sacrifice and loyalty made me sob very hard and my grief intensified once the ending montage showed photage from the real co-pilot who had sacrificed his life while protecting the passengers.

Although I greatly enjoyed the movie, I must say that the first half was less engaging than the second one. Of course the film needed to establish its setting and characters and I still found them intriguing, it's just that I wasn't as focused. Another aspect that could have been handled better was the character of Yong-Dae. I appreciate that they tried to humanize him by portraying the complex politics between North and South Korea but it all came across as kinda shallow. It was a kinda poor attempt and it felt like the writers threw it in without giving him more depth.

All in all, I had a total blast watching Hijack 1971 and I don't complain about turning into a crying mess once I was done. It deserved its success in the Korean box office. It's definitely one of the best movies out there about a hijack and if you enjoy action paced thrillers, I strongly recommend it.

Keeps your eyes glued to the screen and heartbreaking

I was crying by the end of the movie 😭(and not many movies make me cry). The story and the acting were good, but I wished the passengers were given more attention or were a bit more involved. However, I understand that the story wanted to highlight mostly the heroic actions of the co-pilot so that’s fair enough! Anyways I reccomend watching it.

lol apparently my review is too short to publish so I’m adding random text………………………………………..

A Flight, A Fight, and A Farewell

Hijack 1971 left me shaken and emotional. What stayed with me most was the co- pilot , his calm courage in the face of chaos, his quiet strength, and his unwavering sense of duty. Watching his struggle and resilience moved me deeply; his character embodied true bravery and selflessness.

This film isn’t just about a hijacking , it’s about courage, sacrifice, and the strength of the human spirit when faced with impossible choices. It’s powerful, emotional, and truly unforgettable. ✈️💔

Hijack 1971: Not Just the Plane, My Sanity Got Hijacked Too

Missed it in theaters and honestly? Biggest regret 😭 The tension was SO REAL bro I was literally yelling at the hijacker like “CAN YOU NOT?!?” Yeo Jin Goo as the villain?? Slayed. I hated him… but also cried for him. Complex king behavior 😭

Story’s tight, fast-paced, no boring bits. Sung Dong Il = pilot dad of the year. Chae Soobin… love u but STOP ASKING QUESTIONS IN EMERGENCIES 😭 You did help tho so forgiven 💅

Flight attendants? Slay. Passengers? Surprisingly not annoying (thank god). BUT THE COPILOT — Ha Jung Woo, sir, you EAT every role. Zero flop era. Acting? On another planet. I clapped. I cried. I saluted ✈️

Also based on a true story?! I was not ready for the feels. RIP real-life copilot 🕊️💔

EVERYTHING IS JUST OKAY AND ENOUGH FOR THE MOVIE TO BE COMPLETED

First of all I was actually shocked that this movie is based on a true story, As I think of it , since we fans of Korea and Korean culture, we are or most of us is aware of the division of Korea country North and South and as I think about this movie, since the 2 countries are in conflict, maybe this movie is created to tell ill about the North Korea ? and to show that North Korea is Cruel and South is not ? these are my thoughts .. because there was a scene here where the Yeo Jin Goo's story was shown and how his mother died, we can see there that there is a reason why he was like that .. too bad that he included everyone at the airplane about his issues in life.
The movie was okay , I started to think what would I do in such a situation, where there was really no equality that time, about the gender and the status in life and there was not a lot of discoveries and improved technologies yet that we are having right now and then those kind of things happened .. If I was a passenger there and have survived too, I promise that I would never ever get into an airplane anymore .. why ? because that is a traumatic event !
The movie was not that good but it was not also bad, it was sad .. sad that the pilot died , I actually thought that he will survive with one hands but since he has lost too much blood there was no way he was able to survive in that state ..
Every actors was great here , I can always assure and vouch how good the acting of Korean actors were .. specially Yeo JIn Goo, in my entire Kdrama K movie and Kpop fanning , Yeo JIn goo's acting is one of the best acting I ever saw ! so this is guaranteed .. I just don't know what it is that the movie is lacking ( this is only my opinion ) I felt something is lacking I just don't know what it is, or maybe I did expected too much , or maybe because it was short ? but the movie is all in all a good enough movie its like what you see is what you get , let's just say it that way.
I probably never gonna re watch this movie again .
