Good plot; stilted, superficial production.

The plot here is very good. It is a remake of a British drama and it has more twists than a packet of fusilli. With such a solid foundation I was hoping for a great tension filled drama, but I just couldn’t latch onto it. There was no emotional depth, only slippery surface emotions which slide away far too quickly when you try to grab them. After reflecting on why it wasn’t working for me and I came to the conclusion that it was as simple as a general lack of imagination both in the production and the acting. For instance the situation that the FL finds herself in is worst nightmare, but she sails along with no visible signs of deep shock reactions. There was so much opportunity for an impactful performance, but in the end it was just the actors serving the plot to move it along, instead of the plot serving the actors to move them along.

For instance, the camera angles and editing do nothing to help build the tension. Cutting from shot to shot in tense emotional moments for no good reason, when coming slowly in to a closeup that captures micro expressions would be so much less distracting and much more powerful. Tbh Lee Bo Young’s reactions do not have the subtlety that they could have, I don’t see the realisation hit and the dread unroll. Only a limited range of standard emotions that cling to one feeling rather than explore the multiple levels of reactions that happen in reality. If you want to understand what I mean here, just remember/go-watch My Liberation Notes or Flower of Evil and stand in awe of the interplay between camera and actor.

The whole production has a constrained vibe, and I don’t mean in a good way. Like the actors do not feel free, but are being moved around like chess pieces. I am speculating that this was over-control on the director’s part because it wasn’t just one actor, pretty well all of the performances gave off this vibe. The only exception imo was Kim Sang Ho as the detective, Baek Min Yeop who was a standout credible character.

Overall it fails to deliver in the credibility stakes. The villains are ridiculously villainy without a good foundation for being so. There is no subtlety to send a shiver up your spine and I really didn’t feel empathy for the main characters either. Disappointing

NOT INTERESSING AT ALL

Really mid and all messed up first episode. Many questions but let’s give it a chance !

EDIT : DROPPING IT 23 MIN INTO EP 2. Still not got me hooked up 😭.

I expected so much more because I love the FL actress and her neighbour’s actress (the one who played in VIP.
I love the genre ! Everything was reunited yet the plot is so lazy, too much nonsense and things that were not clicking for me.
Like who wouldn’t call when her husband and probably child have disappeared out of nowhere ? The first thing she did was going straight to job what I get unless she tried a bit too late imo to reach out for her husband.
The music was not memorable enough 😭.

How the wife gets to the bottom of everything and protects her family

I like this type of mystery and what’s important is who’s the main character in the story. I like who is playing the female lead because I watched her in Agency and she was very good and kept a cool-head throughout the story now in hide she is more animated but that’s to be expected seeing that her husband kept her in the dark and so she was a little confused as to why her husband was acting in-husbandly-like. I just would the network put the next episode out on time because according to the website episodes 3&4 should’ve been out already.

"People say it gets better with each episode, so give it a chance."

People say that the kdrama gets better as the episodes go on, and I hope that's the case. Unfortunately for me, the first episode is what makes me want to continue watching a kdrama, and that didn't happen here.

First of all, I hope you watch the first episode so you can better understand what I'm about to say.

This kdrama has one of the worst first episodes I've seen; nothing makes sense:
1. They make two characters who are completely different physically change clothes, and surprise! They fit perfectly.
2. The protagonist runs a red light and almost crashes three times. YES, 3 TIMES and there's no confrontation with another driver.
3. She asks for information from her husband's secretary who disappeared, and the secretary responds saying, "you should call him." OMFG, how did she not think of that? It's not like they spent the whole day together and she didn't notice that she called him on her mobile.
4. They break into her office and a policeman she apparently knows appears and asks if anything was taken or if something has disappeared. Then our protagonist looks at him, says they didn't take anything, sighs, the policeman turns around, and then she says, "something disappeared, *sigh* *takes 3 seconds* my husband disappeared." What the hell is this, a Wattpad story or what?
5. The supposed suspect in the case escapes and decides to meet with our protagonist. Where do they meet, you ask? In a café? NO. In a crowded place to blend in? NO... Under a bridge, UNDER A DAMN BRIDGE WHERE IT'S OBVIOUS THEY WILL ATTRACT ATTENTION BECAUSE THERE'S NO ONE ELSE AROUND (surprise, they get found).
6. And the stupidest thing I've ever seen, the person who finds them initiates a chase that lasts 10 seconds, where the person chasing the suspect FOLLOWS TRAFFIC RULES AND KEEPS A HUGE DISTANCE BETWEEN HIM AND THE PERSON HE'S TRYING TO FIND... And wait, there's more. Turns out the protagonist has an idea, to overtake the motorcycle and make it crash into her car... the pursuer goes flying (remember they are near a cliff), falls, the protagonist checks on... next scene, the guy from the motorcycle is fine, no injuries or scratches, standing on his two feet without pain talking like nothing happened and to top it off, he runs off to get his motorcycle. The protagonist could have killed him with that stupid idea, but seriously, it's the worst first episode.
7. Honestly, the first episode has a lot of talking and nothing is explained, literally nothing, and there's no desire to continue because unsurprisingly it's a kdrama about investigating a character's past and that's it, that's all.

If someday I have nothing to watch, I hope I take this back, until then I'll look for another kdrama that's more appealing.

Dores e segredos
