Marvel Meets Parasite & Kdrama fantasy

Take Marvel, Moving & Parasite together, add a dash of Kdrama fantasy & you'll get A Typical Family. Brilliant plot, genius ending.

A very Atypical drama. Gave away few plot spoilers already if you are watching with interest.

It's been tagged as romantic show on Netflix while the first 2 episodes are quite intriguingly mysterious vibes. It's a family of super heroes in their slump era with lots of back stories to unfold and to their further misfortune they're being surrounded by con artists who I believe also has some kind of super powers or something they're hiding.

Overall, a fantasy show like vibes with quite a promising start Maybe Moving kind or maybe Marvel kind. The ML has a unique time slip superpower as well as the other members of family.

Intrigued me enough to continue so let's see how it unfolds.

facilmente o melhor dorama do ano

Superpowers + Romance with scam plot? Why not

__*Atypical Family*__ - K-Drama - 9/10
Quite a refreshing take on the superpower story. Based on my usual drama ratings, this would deserve an 8.5, but I raised it to a 9 due to a few factors like favorite actors and having just 12 episodes.

The acting was commendable. While the romance wasn't particularly hot, steamy, or cute, it was quite decent and enjoyable. The side stories and supporting actors were adequate as well. Overall, this drama had a good pace and was definitely binge-worthy.

__*Plot*__
The story revolves around a wealthy family with hidden superpowers. However, they are in a slump and have lost their powers for various reasons, such as depression, insomnia, and obesity. The female lead is a scammer who, along with her family, schemes to marry into this rich family and swindle them out of their money.

__*Genre*__
Fantasy, romance

All-Time Favourite

I loved this from beginning to end. The storyline was right in my wheelhouse, including the fantasy, conflict, drama, and of course romance. Although some parts were predictable, most of the storyline included twists and turns and I was definitely on the edge of my seat wondering how it would end. It was an emotional story for me, but the social issues were handled in a way that I could manage as a viewer. I do wish that the writers and producers had borrowed some of the time from episodes 9 and 10 to give more breathing space to the last episode. It ended too abruptly for me - I didn't need a whole lot more, but there were so many moments in the other episodes where they teased us without letting on the outcome - they could have created similar moments for the ending.

Your future spouse main purpose in life is to save you! A tear-jerking romance!

I've been avoiding new Kdramas lately since the latest trend is K-Trauma! Which led me to be in a slump for 8 months! When this first came out a lot of people were making edits and some even spoiled it saying how the ML is still stuck on his ex-wife! It sounded like a nightmare! But after giving "Lovely Runner" a chance (it was MEH) It's only fair if I do the same for "The Atypical Family" and I'm glad I did!

Lovely Runner and The Atypical Family both have similar concepts; time-traveling. But what makes one better than the other is that "The Atypical Family" made sense and everything came in a full circle. And- well...the characters are likable.

How would you feel if you found out your future spouse's purpose in life is to save you from the past, which may lead them to a tragic ending? I would be devasted! The ML future is the FL past. Meaning he doesn't understand his own decisions until the right moment reaches him. While with the FL, his future decisions were already made.

For example, earlier in the drama, the FL said when she was young she taught herself how to ride a bike since her father wasn't there, eventually she got the hang of it and was able to do it! However, later in the show, the ML goes back to his childhood to remember a family outing at the park. Suddenly he sees the young FL running and saw her getting teased for not knowing how to ride a bike. That's when he decided to help her learn without ever revealing himself. Is this what you call the 'red string theory'? Wow *claps hands in admiration*! Everything comes in a full circle and I am inspired to have that skill of making a well-written script!

Moving on, I love the OST! It was mainly the same song but in different tones for different emotions! The way the singer slid on the beat had me floating! I also loved how flawed each character is! I was able to relate to something common like being stuck on something from the past! One that really hit home is when the FL thought she healed but realized that she was running from said problem. WOW! We are all human and I'm glad this show was able to reflect something so complex into visuals and do it CLOSE to perfection.

I want to see more flawed but eventually loved characters in new Kdramas! Something that will keep me interested! Not a bland one where life is just...life LMAO! The ending did throw me off and I wished for an extra scene but it's a bitter-sweet ending for me. It's a HEA but the way it was done hit my heart! Of course, I should've known this new Kdrama would suffer from the current trend! And the trend is like...either they die or everything is too superficial! (I'm eyeing a particular drama but it's an unpopular opinion so I'll be quiet LOL!)

In conclusion, this is a good show with an interesting concept that keeps you captivated! I tried my best to avoid spoilers and I was so shook when things were revealed while watching! I hope you are reading this AFTER watching LMAO! I recommend and will most definitely re-watch this when I want to hope that there is someone out there who will always choose me! Happy watching!

RATE: 9.5/10

KTRAUMA- 6/10 (Tear-jerker! Happy and Sad)
GOOD VIBES-6/10 (some angst will leave you on the edge of your seat)
CHEMISTRY- 7/10 (Wish there were more of the leads being a couple without baggage but it's only 12 episodes SMDH)

A quirky tale of destiny and self-acceptance

It's too early for me to say 'The Atypical Family' is the drama of the year, but let me just say it's definitely a contender!

Full transparency as someone who watches well over a dozen dramas per month: I thought about possibly holding off on watching this drama until it aired all the episodes. I wasn't really sold on the premise after the second episode and some of the characters kind of annoyed me.

So fast forward to now (writing this review on June 9th finale day) and I'm so glad I didn't listen to that tiny voice in my head telling me to drop it faster than other dramas! So what got me to change my mind so quickly? Well firstly, it's the cinematography that kept me seated. Then came the story. Next was the performances. Last was the music.

What I like to do with reviews is give you a spoiler-lite breakdown of things to look for, standout moments and or performances and just simple reasons to give this drama a chance (or drop it if it doesn't sound worth your time):

Is there romance? Oh yes! It takes a little to while to get things started but once you get to around episode 6ish, you'll likely be all-in for the leads to get together!

Is the story good? Yes. An absolute masterpiece? Maybe for some. For me, it was pretty good. I was kind of impressed that in just 12 episodes there was enough to keep me looking forward to watching week after week. The A plot revolves around time travel and romance. The B plot follows each character as they come to terms with their powers and the wild antics of the con artist family. Both plots seamlessly intertwine from the first episode to the last. As far as pacing is concerned, I'd say things might feel rushed on episode 12. They had to wrap up all the loose threads in the roughly 1 hour episode so it's natural to feel things happened too fast. Thankfully there weren't many loose threads.

How were the performances? In short: flawless. Every actor put on a stellar performance. My personal favorites were Jang Ki Yong as Bok Gwi Ju, Chun Woo-hee as Do Da Hae and Park So Yi as Bok I Na. If you're like me and can't really remember a memorable role of actor Jang Ki Yong, then he'll definitely be memorable in this drama! Man, something about him crying makes you breakdown and cry too. He put so much emotion into the role. Same with the talented Chun Woo-hee. She nails her role as a con artist looking to escape her horrible life. Lastly, 12 year-old Park So Yi will win you over from the very first scene she's in. She's so talented!

Other things to note:

There's a "sudden" shift in personality for the big bad of the story that might confuse you. You can chalk this up to the character not getting enough screen time or rather the writer not delving into the motivations behind the character. If this drama was 16 episodes the characters turn to the side of light might not be so jarring. With that said, them not being fleshed out doesn't take away from their great performance.

There are plenty of "girl power" moments if you love seeing women treating a terrible character like the trash that he is.

The soundtrack grows on you!

Kim Su Hyun in a fat suit was a choice. I wasn't liking it at first but the characters journey to self-acceptance made me forget about it.

If you're patient enough (something I initially lacked in the beginning) to hop on this emotional ride, I promise you won't regret it! Who knows, by the end of it, you might turn into an emotional mess like me!

Truly a masterpiece✨

I started this drama, without knowing the cast but my friend urged me so I thought I would give this a try😂 This drama started of great, original plot/storyline of the exception of superpower ofc but the cast was amazing in terms of acting and how the characters have their own little story. From their hear-fluttering love story (ML and FL) and their ever so touching brother-sister relarionship this drama stole my heart. I absolute,y loved the ML just seeing him made me feel butterflies in my stomach, which I haven't felt for long and truly loved this drama and hope more drama like this come an original plot, with a captivating cast. Please do give it a try, even tho the romance mah be slow they did make up for it with some cute scenes and it felt like they were a newly married couple every time they were together🥰😂 An absolute MASTERPIECE is what this is I got no words!...
The ML, FL, ML sister and ofc ML's daughter truly stole the show for me😭💜
Will miss the drama ever so much dojwu😭🥰
PS:I only rated it 9.5 rewatch value cause it made me cry too much😭
The ending was so unexpexted

Atypical!

… very enjoyable
Safe to say her ‘Oma’ turned a new leaf?
Loved to see it.
Also, Ina’s confidence development was slow and steady and worth it.
Bok Don Eat and Grace - I enjoyed their banter and ‘sisterhood’. Also enjoyed watching the healthy relationship between Gwi ju and Bok Don Eat.
Overall, excellent!

A unique time travel superhero romance drama

9/10 is my rating. This is a 2024 fantasy romance drama with 12, 70-76 minute episodes.  It is also known as "Although I Am Not a Hero."

First I provide a unique synopsis then review.

Synopsis

Do Da-hae (Chun Woo-hee) has participated in several cons where she marries men then works with her step family to relieve them of their assets.  That is her goal when she first meets the Bok family.  Bok Gwi-ju (Jang Ki-yong) is a depressed man who is so grief stricken over the loss of his wife, he is not very involved with his teenage daughter, Bok I-na (Park So-yi).  What Do Da-hae does not know at first is this is a family of people who used to have superpowers.  They lost their powers when they started partaking in modern vices like overeating, lack of sleep and poor mental health.  Do Da-hae cozies up to the family to swindle them but her attentions start to heal some of their issues and she finds herself drawn to them in a real sense.  There is Gwi-ju who used to be able to time travel to happy events but is now too depressed to think of anything happy.  Bok Dong-hee (Claudia Kim), the older sister, used to be able to fly but overindulging in food has left her grounded.  The mother of the household, Bok Man-heum (Go Doo-shim) can see the future and used it in the past to amass a family fortune.  The father, Eom Soon-gu (Oh Man-seok), is the only family member without any powers although it was first thought I-na did not have any powers.  She is hiding her ability to "read" people behind shaded glasses.  Can a con artist unintentionally heal this wounded family?  Is Do Da-hae the motivation for Gwi-ju to move on from his past tragedy?

ReviewIf you are looking for a unique premise and different spin on time travel this is a good one for that.  It does have a strong romantic element but there are so many tragic events around it, not a feel good or light hearted type romance.  There is also a very different "take" on superheroes.  I enjoyed this a lot because of the unusual perspectives on themes and tropes that have been frequently done in other movies and dramas.  He is an unusual male lead character and she is an unusual female lead character.  Overall, this series is a good addition to the time traveler and super hero dramas and is also something romance fans would enjoy.

Spoilers

The story ends happily with the main couple together, in fact they have a child who is born with superpowers.  All major plot lines are resolved.  There are a lot of emotional and sad moments so those that are really sensitive to that type of content may want to consider this one has some darker and emotionally draining moments.

The main female lead character was a con artist and was part of a larger family of con artists.  She was being coerced to con people to pay back her father's debt to the loan shark he wound up acting as her mother.  But she doesn't resist the role even when it is clear it is hurting other people who are good.  It made it hard to really like her and be hopeful in her relationship.

The chemistry between the leads was off for a couple of reasons.  First, their height difference was such that their passionate kisses often just looked painful.  And, second, so much of the series was spent with one or the other rejecting their feelings that there was such a relatively short period when they were actually together.

The mother was just mean to the main female lead character well beyond when it seemed she should have known she wasn't conning people because she wanted to.  Even as a con artist she had done so much to help the family you think they could forgive her having that type of motive to start.

They never explained main lead girl's "uncle" and "sister."  Were they kids like her or were they her loan shark "mother's" actual children.

Bruh, first of all I was a bit annoyed by the fact that the FL is a con artist but the way the ml accepts it and knows that she is gd is just amazing 🥹

I've watched it until epi 8 (it's still ongoing) and bro i love it.
I watched all the episodes in one day-
Trust me, it's good.

One of the best things I have watched this year!

As I mentioned in the headline, this drama was one of the best things I have watched this year. The characters were all so well-written that I enjoyed everyone's story and never felt even a bit bored. Even the "bad" characters won my heart in the end because they weren't just plainly "selfish" and "evil." Watching Dahae's and Gwi-ju's families was incredibly fun.

Some people didn't really like the male leads because they seemed boring to them, but for me, it was the opposite. It was more of a slow burn, but I truly felt the chemistry and connection between the two leads. In some scenes, I was on the verge of tears because it felt so real. This drama had a good mix of fantasy and realism. It also showed us how everyone dealt with their own problems, like depression, different kinds of fears, and the feeling of being lonely and misunderstood.

The drama's ability to blend humor with heartfelt moments created a unique viewing experience that was both entertaining and emotionally resonant. The cinematography and soundtrack were outstanding, enhancing the overall atmosphere and making certain scenes even more impactful. Additionally, the cultural insights the drama provided, portraying family dynamics and societal issues in a nuanced and authentic way, were commendable.

The supporting characters, especially the elderly family members, were particularly noteworthy for their depth and the wisdom they imparted throughout the series. Overall, "Atypical Family" stands out not just for its story but for the way it connects with the audience on a personal level, making it a memorable and must-watch drama.
