Good show that could be better
The premise of pairing two talented actors should, in theory, result in an unforgettable drama. Unfortunately, star power alone cannot compensate for weaknesses in storytelling. There is no question that the two leads share excellent chemistry, portraying a relationship that can be interpreted as either a profound friendship or a subtle bromance. Their interactions are often the emotional anchor of the series, and they bring sincerity and depth to characters that sometimes deserve stronger material.The action sequences are undoubtedly the highlight of the show. The close-combat choreography is well executed, intense, and visually engaging. Whenever the story loses momentum, the fight scenes often remind viewers why they started watching in the first place.
The title itself suggests a grand journey filled with adventures, discoveries, and character growth. Yet the narrative never fully delivers on that promise. Instead of feeling like a sweeping adventure, the story often feels fragmented, as though important pieces of character development are missing. Perhaps it’s the reduction in episode count, but the bigger issue lies within the script itself. The plot frequently lacks cohesion and certain storylines are introduced without much development.
The ending is another source of disappointment. Like many Chinese dramas lately, the series embraces a tragic conclusion that may be intended to reflect realism. This has become such a common trend that many viewers now ask about a drama's ending before deciding whether to invest dozens of hours into it. While some attribute this preference for bittersweet or tragic endings to censorship and cultural storytelling traditions, an ending should ultimately serve the story. Tragedy is powerful when it feels earned; here, it feels more frustrating than meaningful.
Real life already contains enough hardship, disappointment, and loss. For many viewers, dramas provide a temporary escape, a chance to experience hope, triumph, and happiness. Not every story requires a fairy-tale ending, but it should leave viewers feeling that the 37 hours journey was worthwhile.
In the end, Zhao Zhan Adventures succeeds because of its lead actors and impressive action choreography, but its uneven storytelling and unsatisfying conclusion prevent it from reaching the heights its premise promises.

Wuxia Investigations
The drama feels a little slower than others but the plot it progressing at a good pace. There's no filler here. Each scene is important for the plot. Each moment you get more information about the cases or the characters. It's very well done.Are there big flash bangs and scenes where everything is blowing up and the actors pretty cry with dramatic lighting to show hope pretty they are? Nope and that's honestly why I like it. It's a good old fashioned investigation in the wuxia drama. It's not all about visuals with no substance.
For those picking on Zhan Zhao as a character or the actor- that's how he's supposed to be. Zhan Zhao is guarded in his emotions but also open to other people. Just like any human in a position of responsibility, you have to maintain face. Zhan Zhao is an official. Unlike his counterparts, he can't openly express or go off on people. I find that Yang Yang acts this very well. You can see the outrage or pain in his eyes. But because he's an official with duties and is prioritizing the outcome in a court of law- he's tied down by both himself and the court.
I would suggest this drama to anyone that can handle a mystery that isn't just flashy plot devices. The team fails and fails a lot. But that's more human than a mystery where they've always been ahead of the villain. They go through pain and heartache. If you want a human story, give this one a shot and remember that the show is going to take some thought to really understand.

Finally Yang Yang picked the right role!
Note: Not a part of any fandom so I can enjoy the story for what it is (or isn't)What's working:
1. Yang Yang in a role that suits him
This feels like a role tailored to his looks and strong dance background. The fight scenes really highlight his physical ability. While there are still quite a few stunt doubles, his own scenes stand out far beyond what most actors can pull off. I just wish he had taken on more roles like this in his 20s.
Honestly, I’ve never really enjoyed most of his dramas—he tends to lack chemistry with female leads, and his line delivery can feel stiff. That’s still the case here, but with so many action scenes, it doesn’t matter as much.
2. Alen Fang and the supporting cast
I’m a fan of Alen Fang, so I may be a bit biased, but overall the supporting cast is strong and delivers solid performances.
3. Fight scenes
There are a lot of them—probably more than I’ve seen in any single drama in years. Of course some scenes are just superior because you can do more with actors like Yang Yang and Xiu Qing (Bad master dude) vs others
4. Lighting and production quality
High production value overall, and thankfully, the actors actually have visible skin texture. I really dislike excessive skin smoothing where faces look overly pale.
What could’ve been better:
1. Female lead (FL)
She fits more of the modern, fragile princess archetype who needs rescuing. It’s hard to buy her as a strong, martial arts–skilled character.
Compared to actresses like Tian Xi Wei (Pursuit of Jade) or Li Qin (The Wolf), she just doesn’t feel on the same level.
2. 2nd FL .... just *sigh* There are plenty actresses with stronger dance background to do these kind of roles. Why not give them a chance?
3. Camera work
Some of the spinning shots during fight scenes are overdone and gives me a headache.
4. ML Yang Yang, what can I say? Role is "perfect" for you but ... still no chemistry with any FL and bromance didn't really work either so... yeah....
Still overall an enjoyable watch!

Try harder next time…
After watching Mysterious Lotus Casebook, I found The Zhan Zhao Adventures felt like a weaker imitation of the same formula.It seemed to borrow many of the elements that made Mysterious Lotus Casebook successful but without achieving the same emotional depth or quality of storytelling.
Have been waiting for this drama - sadly, disappointing for me.

The show is good but the way they showed yaksha as someone demonic is not true according to hindu and buddhist teachings yashaa is someone who protects nature, represents life, fertility also he is the gatekeeper of heavenly realm he is under the king kubera (god of wealth). Yangyang acting and fl acting is so good but tbh im drawn to the acting of second ml. He is such a versatile actor . Some people are saying there are dropping from 12 or 13 but honestly u should watch further to understand ml perspective he is not only fighting for girls justice but also against the whole group of corrupted leaders which is deeply rooted in the city ofcoarse he should kill them but not secretly rather in public aka among common folks with their bashing and curses and humilitiation for lyf is what they deserve not simple death. YangYang did not disappoint
I love the fight scenes and intrigues. What I don't like about it is that the villains are always let go while the allies are left and right getting killed. When your life is on the line, can they not kill these villains? I will revisit this review once I finish it. This is just my initial take. When it comes to Yangyang's acting, I cannot find fault. I also like Alan Fang, he is like a breath of fresh air. I like his comedic and petulant timing. This drama was great until every episode was the same there no killing so everytime a fight scene is happening the same characters are on there all u see is fighting but no killing and that gets boring after a while I’m on episode 15 and still no one had died on there it so boring . After watching it i realised just because there is good fighting scenes and better Vfx visualsit don't make it good story
And big cast don't make good show it only attracted crowed for once.

NOT AN INTERESTING DRAMA
Yang Yang is a gorgeous guy, very good looking, but he acts many drama the same way. It supposedly sad heartbreaking scene but what I watch just slight concern face. He accepted the compliment 'how good looking' peoples thrown at him with a nod, acknowledging people praises....ugh!Allen Fang & Ruo Nan carried the scenes. Allen attempted to be funny, he's a bit older now, obvious eyes bags under. Story isn't interesting, cannot relates to any of the adventures.
Okey, I dropped in episode 13. If you look for meaningful drama, this isn't it. I cannot recommend it. Let's just move on.

Having watched about 10 episodes, it feels like watching Zhan Zhao endure mortal trials
it feels like watching Zhan Zhao endure mortal trials, with a beautiful woman as his reward.But I'm not entirely sure; Linglong might actually die at the end since she constantly puts herself in dangerous situations. Also, while watching, I feel that the bromance/friendship between Bai Yitang and Zhan Zhao looks much more beautiful than the romance between Zhan Zhao and Huo Linglong.
I really want to praise Yang Yang for dedicating himself to the training and delivering such an excellent performance in this drama. Of course, there must have been accidents and injuries; I heard he even got injured during rehearsals before filming started. His postures and movements in this show are incredibly precise, showing immense physical training. Usually, men's bodies are quite stiff and not as flexible as women's, but in this drama, he is so flexible. His forms are beautiful and perfect, just like a man practicing yoga, yet filled with power. It’s absolutely gorgeous and highly enjoyable to watch, even though some scenes are pitch black. Why does it have to be that dark?
However, I don't really understand the script. They want to defeat the villains but refuse to kill them—instead, they wait for them to recover, go gather more backups, and then come back for another beating in the next scene. What's the point? It's like playing a video game where the difficulty just keeps ramping up. They could have just used lethal force and finished some of them off to save energy. I am totally against this kind of hero trope; it’s exhausting and makes no sense.
The female lead is cute but doesn't seem very smart. She blindly believes whatever tricks Zhan Zhao plays on her. She must be very young and naive; according to the story, she doesn't seem to be over 18. As for Zhan Zhao, I’d guess he is somewhere between 26 and 29 years old."

Now, the main lead and heroine have taken their relationship to the next level, becoming each other's special someone. Notice how he called her "Linglong" three times; it's a clear message to the audience. Given historical and cultural norms, along with Zhan Zhao's personality, he would never directly call a woman by her first name unless she was family or a childhood friend. He used to maintain distance by calling her "Lady Huo" or playfully teasing her as "Heroine Huo." But this time, he emphasized her name because after being apart for just one night, he missed her. Seeing that she had left and then returned, his joy slipped out. She wasn't surprised and didn't mention it, quietly accepting it.
It's a classic trope in historical Chinese dramas—the audience just has to read between the lines. It's truly funny but sad for this love line.

Good BL with a bisexual intrigue
Zhan Zhao and Bai Yu Tang are in love and Huo Linglong joins them once in a while and they end up making a very good throuple. The villains are great. They look imposing but they always lose and they keep losing. They keep coping that they might make a comeback but in the end, it's just a straight decline for them.Was this review helpful to you?
worth to watch
Everything about this drama is perfect I love the fighting scenes, the color, the cinematography, the acting, the actors, the story of this drama so much and the trio is protecting each other they’re so cute tgt I love their friendship.I was so mad on Ming zhuer dead I feel so bad for him and his family at this young age.
They said no romance but im secretly shipping Zhanzhao with Hou linglong cuz their chemistry is saur good I really want them both end up tgt.
At the last ep I thought that Bai yutang is dead but he’s not i was so scared cuz I don’t want to see one of them die. I really want the 3 of them be tgt. The three of them deserved so much better. I love the way they trying to help each other and finding the way to figure things to help their friends no matter what that’s why they get along tgt so well and they risked everything for each other they’re went through so much tgt. I want to see this trio again. Please don’t separate them.
