The Mongols, led by Genghis Khan, went west to destroy the Jin Dynasty, wanted to go south to destroy the Song Dynasty. Martial Arts Masters from several Schools in the Central Plains of China fought gathering strength to defend Xiangyang.
It's basically the same story. The movie condenses as much of it as it can, the drama is starting the journey (two more parts/seasons planned IIRC).
Both are based on the classic drama / novel, so for who watched the older versions there won't be many surprises.
For me, TBH, though the story is very short-summarised, the movie comes ahead with amazing cinematography and good special effects (you can tell they're CGI, but that's the usual trend for cinema.)
