Against the Current Episode 11 Reactions
The high quality of the script of this drama is perhaps best demonstrated by what they DIDN'T include in this episode. This episode, with a banquet and all kinds of key guests, was the perfect setting for the classic stereotypical drama trope: The Honey Trap. But this show very gracefully avoided the usual way such a contrivance is implemented and instead used a more subtle mechanism - the Larkspur hairpin - for similar purpose. So much subtler and yet just as dangerous and in this story, very cleverly resolved. Everything was so much more 'adult' in the way both the trap was set by Du Chu Que and the way it was discovered and mitigated by Lan Xiang (with some assistance by others). No silly dramatics / drugs / couple locked in room/ etc., etc.. like the typical 'honey trap' scene usually entails.

The mothers conspire to have the best guards for the celebration. They know they need to keep scandals at bay and the matron maids they have on the detail promise to not even let a fly get through. The young ladies are all together and there is one that is the cattiest causing trouble with the Lin sister so her temper will get her in trouble. The youngest Lin is entranced by Ms Du who has helped her twice. All the men wear flowers and JinWi opted to wear the gift from Ms Du’s box. It turns out the flower was her name and he was soon teased by all for giving himself as the prize for the new lady tenant. Fortunately right when this was getting its biggest cheer and he was going to respond, his grandfather shows up with larkspurs for everybody because it turns out it’s a natural pesticide and good for crops. This was a way for all to show appreciation for the earth that produced their food. His providential arriving was in direct response to LanXiang’s find. She was airing out the books and saw the picture. She understood immediately the significance of JinQi wearing that particular flower and made haste to get Yuchan on board with the danger. However, the meticulous gate guards were not having it. So LanXiang got more creative and encorporated the aid of youngest Lin to give a book to gpa for her. She did this with a very elaborate sales pitch for a never missing slingshot. 🤣😁 He left with alacrity looking forward to his prize. 🤣 Ms Du claims innocence about it being in the box but does admit to making the flower ornament. Lan Xiang’s friend loading up the boxes admitted she put items in, but did not recall the flower. But since she was the only one handling the boxes, she could not claim innocence either. The matriarch punished them strictly. There would be no forgetting this incident. But she did follow up with the best meds. LanXiang received two gold taels for her actions. She immediately offered one to have the sentences of her friends lessened but that was refused with the promise of meds. She was instructed to continue doing her best. 🤣😂 The arrogant Xie scholar was certainly snooty, but I enjoyed his interaction with the Lin brothers. He will fit in well. JinQi has a chat with boy Lin and learns about the slingshot. He is promised a better flower ornament for next year and happily runs off with JinQi’s friend to go horseback riding. LanXiang enters and asked how she found the book drawing. It was serendipity as she was in charge of airing the books and came across it. The end of the episode flashes back to LanXiang ready to suggest a counter to the larkspur ornament when the episode ends. I am glad she is making headway at her job, Her character is shining through even to the top people now. But I know she also fears having their attention on her because she already knows all too well where that attention can lead. I am enjoying the pace of the story as it is showing the natural progression of everybody. What I am still not sure of is if Ms Du is a wolf in a pretty dress or not. That flower ornament was a bit too specific and not many would get the significance.

My suspicion that Du Cuique is not as innocent and nice as she looks has grown even stronger. I am more than certain that the flower on Jinqi's head wasn't an accident and that it was her scheme to make everyone assume there was romantic interest, forcing him to marry her. I am just not sure if her brother was in on it or not, because his reaction was hard to read. 🤨And I am so mad at Du Cuique for putting the blame on Xiaolian... my poor, sweet girl! 😢🫂The Lin family is lucky Shen Jialan survived all those years ago. Without her, Jinqi would have another unwanted marriage and possibly an even worse wife than the first. 🫣 But she's earning trust and getting recognized now — Jinqi's mother and grandfather definitely appreciate her quick thinking, cleverness and, in the end, her loyalty to their family. As for Jinqi — he's questioning her, and to be fair, I don't blame him. The situation is suspicious from all angles, and maybe her help was also pre-planned... But I think it'll be fine and he will be satisfied with whatever she tells him about the other flowers. 😌I am not sure if I'm correct, because there are so many characters and it's becoming a bit challenging to follow who is who, but I think Liu Xiuwan was watching a different young man, not the one she was supposed to. The young man shooting arrows had the same clothing as the guy who read poems and was sitting separately from everyone — matching the info she had on what the poem guy was wearing, right? 🤔

This episode featured suspense and introduced a new female character who uses her intelligence and wit to get what she wants. However, she faced off against another woman who—working from behind the scenes—outmaneuvered her, all because of a drawing of the Cuíque flower found in an ancient book. Jialan was clever enough to bring a solution to the problem, earning a valuable gift from Lin Jin Qi’s mother. Even so, her friends were punished because a paper flower—which they had inadvertently placed in a box of ornaments delivered by Miss Du—was actually part of a setup by Miss Du Cuíque (who shares her name with that blue flower). Lin Jin Qi’s mother was very upset, noting that the incident could have caused serious trouble for Lin Jin Qi; he was wearing the blue flower on his hat (as all young men did on "Men's Day"), and such a flower could signal a romantic interest. In Lin Jin Qi's case, it might have implied he was dishonorably treating a young woman in an unacceptable manner—bypassing formal rites and effectively making her his concubine. While his father and grandfather saw no way out, Jialan intelligently solved the problem, saving Lin Jin Qi at the critical moment—a very interesting, suspenseful highlight of the episode. There was also a riddle contest based on knowledge of flowers from classic literature. Lin Jin Qi’s brother took part and managed to defeat a young man from the Xie family; Lin Jin Qi also participated, making for a fascinating sequence. The young man from the Xie family had assumed the Lins were uneducated; he was surprised to discover otherwise and was nearly defeated in the match, ultimately winning only by spotting the Cuíque flower on Lin Jin Qi’s hat and using it to craft a riddle. But that was the moment everyone exchanged meaningful glances—including Lin Jin Qi’s friend, the brother of the young woman "Cuíque," who felt slighted by Lin Jin Qi. (However, everything was resolved thanks to Jia Lan’s quick thinking.)Lin Jin Qi’s sister found a suitor—Lady Du Cuíque’s brother—in whom she showed a great deal of interest. There is one of Lin Jin Qi’s sisters who seemed quite simple-minded, yet she demonstrated in this episode that she is actually very intelligent and perceptive. We already know there are new challenges to face with these new characters, and some of them arose in this episode. (But now, I’m moving on to episode 12.)

okay so plot is still slow BUT the scenes in this episode were super important. first of all, this miss du girly is giving fake vibes. she's all sweet to everyone's face but there's no chance she accidentally gave MC a flower she was named for - that was 100% intentional, likely to force speculation and a hasty match between them? second of all, our FMC didnt just catch MC's eye for her quick thinking but also the old master's, so good on her!!
