War and People

Focusing on the sweeping family upheavals and parallel life experiences of progressive youth Tong Jia Ting, a law student at National Central University, and his father, Tong Shuang Wei, a high-ranking Kuomintang Central Committee official, this historical epic presents a panoramic view of Chinese society during the War of Resistance Against Japan. In 1937, following the fall of Nanjing, the father and son are cast into a perilous eight-year journey of displacement spanning Wuhan, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Chongqing. As they navigate the harsh realities of a nation at war, their paths diverge ideologically. Tong Shuang Wei gradually witnesses the deep structural corruption of the KMT government, leading to the ultimate disillusionment of his traditional ideals. Concurrently, inheriting the legacy of his mother, Liu Wei, and guided by his uncle, Liu Zhong Hua, the young Tong Jia Ting undergoes a rapid political awakening and personal growth, ultimately choosing to join the Communist Party of China. Human destiny is inextricably linked to the times. War serves as a touchstone, filled with choices between loyalty and betrayal, courage and cowardice, light and darkness.
