Double Fantasies (1981)

”Double Fantasies” (Wu Shuang Pu) uses mythological elements and the portrayal of the dual personalities of characters to convey the moral lesson: people with the same appearance may not have the same heart, and even the same individual can commit deeply contradictory acts. This series consists of three independent, non-overlapping anthology stories: "Exchanging the Hairpin" (易釵) follows mythical tortoise and carp deities as they manifest in the mortal realm to execute structural debts of gratitude, intervening to rescue an imperial prince in peril. "Lu Pan" (陸判) follows a mortal scholar who befriends an underworld judge. The judge replaces the scholar's heart to grant him intelligence, but chaos ensues when the scholar requests a head-swap between his plain wife and a beautiful courtesan. "Chasing the Fish" (追魚) follows a sympathetic carp spirit who transforms into a human to aid a penniless scholar after his wealthy, elitist fiancée rejects him.
