I'm biased towards Zhu Yu because it was my first chinese novel, but I don't read angst. Does this novel have it? The synopsis hints at a very angsty novel.

While I enjoy reading smut, I've not found a good chinese novel with smut. I mean, if it has it, the plot is usually very bad, or the other way, the plot is good but the smut is either very little or nonexistent. I would love to read a novel with both.

yes exactly! I want a novel with both, POJ had the story and while people said they are freaky in novel, I expected explicit descriptions, not glossed over, describe it for me, don't tell me you did it. haha

There is an amount of angst (I think more than Zhu Yu) as it tells a story of a very strong-willed FL (female-centric story) with a life mission who meets the ML whose ultimate meaning in life is her and they start out on parallel life paths, but I would say it is not to the “very” angsty level. I stuck to the end for this novel and was satisfied by the story as a whole. The leaked footage of Zhang Ling He and Ling Yun in its drama adaptation, English title The Road to Glory, looks promising. Another novel of a similar genre and tone (a love that never wavers) to both <Zhu Yu> and <Gui Luan> is <Ci Tang> which also held my interest till the end and apparently will ALSO star Zhang Ling He who just suits costume dramas so well.

You can check out these three Chinese novels: Jin Wang Dotes on His Concubine, Empress with No Virtue, and Dark Empress.
They don’t fully match all the themes OP mentioned, but these are my top picks when it comes to Chinese historical novels with a decent plot and smut.
