????here comes one of the great historic drama of 2026***

I just finished *Pursuit of Jade*… and honestly, The storyline might sound familiar at first, but the way it’s been brought to life is so beautifully done that you won’t feel bored even for a second ✨

I’m completely obsessed with the Marquis of Wuan and his wifuuuu 😭✨ This drama really did something to me that I haven’t felt in such a long time while watching this drama. I went in with decent expectations, but WOW—it completely exceeded everything I imagined.

First of all, the visuals… just WOW 😍 every frame felt so rich and beautiful. And Zhang Linghe?? I’m even more obsessed with him now 🫠🔥 Changyu absolutely nailed her role too she was powerful, graceful, and unforgettable. And can we talk about the fight scenes?! OMG they were sooo well done ⚔️💥 I genuinely couldn’t find a single flaw.

Every arc in this drama had its own magic. The village arc? So beautiful, I’m still in awe 🌸 The battle era was intense and powerful ❤️‍🔥 And the Marquis of Wuan & General Fan era?? I’m in LOVE. Each phase of the story pulled me in deeper, and not once did I feel bored.

Even the villains were amazing 👏 Every character felt meaningful, and I loved them all in their own way. It truly felt like such a beautiful journey from beginning to end… waiting for new episodes every day, feeling all the emotions 🥺📺 And now that it’s over, I honestly can’t believe it’s done.

The Marquis of Wuan is now officially on my list of top favorite generals 💯 and Changyu is hands down one of the BEST female generals ever 💪🔥

I’ve watched so many historical C-dramas, but only a few leave this kind of impact on me—like "The Double", "Story of Kunning Palace", and "Prisoner of Beauty"… and now THIS 🥹✨

💖 This is definitely going to stay in my heart for a long, long time.

Good story rushed ending

Pursuit of Jade is undeniably a good drama, but it is ultimately held back by severe pacing issues that drastically lower its rewatch value. The story is highly ambitious, and trying to cram it all into a single run was a mistake. This drama ideally should have been divided into two seasons of 24 episodes each. At the absolute minimum, it needed at least 8 more episodes to do the narrative justice.

The pacing problem becomes glaringly obvious in the final stretch. The last 10 episodes feel so incredibly rushed that it automatically takes you out of the immersion. Instead of experiencing the story naturally, it feels like someone hit the fast-forward button, leaving you to watch a frantic checklist of plot points being rapidly ticked off.

The elements that suffer the most from this rush are the war arc and the final ending. The battlefield sequences, which should have been the epic centerpiece of the story, lack the necessary breathing room to build real tension or stakes. Because the war is hurried, the ending naturally falls flat. The climax arrives too abruptly, and the final resolutions feel unearned. After everything the characters endure, the audience isn't given the time to actually feel the emotional payoff.

Overall, it is a solid show with a great initial setup, making it worth a first watch. However, because the chaotic final 10 episodes ruin the immersion and the emotional landing, I wouldn't go back to rewatch it.

Overall a RARE gem , MUST watch drama!

PursuitOfJade is a masterpiece from start to finish. The story is gripping and beautifully paced, keeping you hooked with every episode. The main actors deliver performances that are both natural and powerful there’s no forced emotion, just genuine connection.

The best part of this duo is their natural chemistry. It’s rare to find a drama where the leads match so perfectly in acting ability, visual presence, and emotional depth. On top of that, the cinematography is stunning, and even the side characters are well-developed and play their parts seamlessly.

This drama isn’t just entertaining
it’s a full experience. Truly one of the best pairings and productions in recent memory

Half-time check in--plus final assessment

Having now watched all episodes of PURSUIT OF JADE, I have to agree that–although in places this story is unbelievable, and certainly brutal--it’s one of the most entertaining and original Chinese dramas of the year.

What I like:

1. There are certain cliches that pop up in Asian dramas again and again. This series has fewer of those than almost any drama I’ve seen up to this point. The slight, skinny FL is no helpless victim. If anything, she’s almost unbelievably strong and assertive. I said “almost” because, well, I questioned a couple of her physical feats. But I suspended my disbelief for the sake of the overall narrative, which never flags.

2. Speaking of the plot, it’s unusual for me to be so engrossed in the action that I have a problem turning off the TV when my own life is calling. That’s how this drama affected me–it’s utterly absorbing.

3. The originality of the plot, the physical details of the house and yard, plus other visuals frame the story in a way that adds authenticity. For example, the uneven and ramshackle fences that encircle the Fan house looked altogether real (I looked them up–and, yes, rural fences do sometimes look like that).

4. The way the impoverished villagers help each other out, the malicious gossip, even the slaughtering of the pigs–all contributed to the overall credibility. The main characters, and many of the minor ones, are appealing and likeable. The plot is succinct. If there’s any filler in the first 23 episodes, I couldn’t find it.

5. Some of the visuals are clever–others are downright stunning–for example the scene where the camera follows the white hawk as it soars through the clouds. (AI generated, of course.) Still, it’s breathtaking.

6. Delightful little touches like the ML sneezing when his wife and teacher each sing his praises without either realizing that they’re talking about the same dude. (In East Asian cultures, many believe that sneezing indicates that someone is talking about you behind your back.)

A few difficulties--

1. Suffice it to say that this story is brutal in places. You probably shouldn’t watch it with young children. There are a few graphic sequences where a pig is slaughtered, or at least seems to go unconscious before its killed–although we’re told that “no animals were harmed in this episode.” In another scene, a young child is psychologically tormented.

2. The political machinations were too convoluted, and culture specific, for me to follow. Luckily viewers don’t need to understand the details to understand who the villains are–and who’s trying to off whom.

3. I counted four times in the first 23 episodes that the ML was out of commission because of injuries sustained in a fight–and I might have missed a few. Too repetitious for a drama that mostly avoids this kind of overkill.

4. It’s usually a good idea not to confuse the actor with the character he plays. Linghe Zhang has been criticized--I’d say unfairly--as being a bit subdued and tepid in his role as the ML. That’s how the character is written, folks. Zheng Xie is supposed to be a serious man with heavy responsibilities.

If you want to see the same actor’s wild, zany side, watch his performance as Changheng in LOVE BETWEEN FAIRY AND DEVIL, especially the sequence where he’s been reincarnated as a fun-loving mortal.

LATER–I’ve now seen all episodes. We spend much of the second half of this drama in the company of people who are basically trying to shiv one another. Also, the English subtitles were sometimes a bit muddled and incoherent.

If I were a foot soldier putting my life on the line for the Marquis of Wu'an, I might be a tad annoyed that he spends so much energy on the vicissitudes of his love life--instead of figuring out how he’s going to defeat the bad guys. At one point, he even recruits his underlings to create a performance to trick the FL...

Villains in C-dramas seldom get their due. So I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out the magnetic, sultry presence of Deng Kai who plays the role of Qi Min, in a way that makes the character both compelling and horrific.

NOTE to those still watching PURSUIT OF JADE–or are about to begin it:

If you want to promote quality cinema in China please boycott pirated versions. The people responsible for this fine production deserve to profit from it. Each decision, each costume, the ost, and everything about this drama shows the care and artistry that were poured into it. Any discerning viewer can see it. Please make sure you’re viewing it through legitimate outlets, so that the original director and producers can recoup their considerable investment. (Just to be clear--I have no connection with the company who made PURSUIT OF JADE.)

Couldn't live up to initial hype with uneven pacing and a crash & burn ending

Subjective Gut Rating: 7.75

“Pursuit of Jade” was all the hype when it was first aired. The Feeds couldn’t get enough of Zhang Ling He (of course) and also praised how much they love the female lead, Fan Chang Yu (played by the adorable Tian Xi Wei). Add on a long silver haired toxic Deng Kai, it has all the ingredients to be a successful drama. But then, it somewhat crashed in the end and just could not stick the landing. “Pursuit of Jade” is not a bad drama, but the expectations were just so high that many were disappointed. I don’t always agree with the ‘highs’ but I do with the ‘lows’.

Since the title of the drama is about the pursuit of Jade, Jade I assume is the female lead. The story focuses on her journey much more so than the male lead. I guess this causes some criticisms that the male lead’s character was not fully utilized. His investigation of what happened 17 years ago gave us the initial setting of a plot that is not romance-focused. But as the story goes, his investigation becomes more of a way to help FL instead. Did he still want to find out what happened? For sure! But I think he cares more for FL than his father’s death.

Many love Fan Chang Yu (FL). She’s smart, caring, sweet, and strong both physically and mentally. She can hold her own, push back when needed, even when she’s in love or heartbroken. Yan Zheng (ML) never gets an upper hand when he’s fighting with her. He will eventually give in. She has girl power! She will fight alongside her man in battles, but not behind him. She saves his ass a few times, too. But there are certain decisions she made that I want to shake some sense into her. I was especially mad at her for her actions in the army camp. She is smart enough to know you can’t do whatever you want and not follow the rules. She’s not a careless person, but a very considerate one. Yet, time and time again, she didn’t listen. Of course, Yan Zheng is at fault as well, as he kept his identity a secret for way too long. Additionally, she said she wants to be independent, not relying on others and doesn't like others making decisions for her. Yet she did that several times to Yan Zheng and Li Huai An. She made decisions on their behalf all in the name of protecting them. I don’t think she would have appreciated them doing the same to her. She doesn’t care what others are going to gossip about her and her status, yet she would break up with Yan Zheng for his sake. This girl has a lot of double standards! Having said all that, she’s still a rare independent and strong female character.

Many also love the first 17 episodes when a lot of time is spent in the village. Those times were a great set up and introduction to most characters. It’s the time when romance blooms in a slow but natural way. The villagers are mostly likeable and even the annoying ones aren’t that bad. However, I might be one of the few that feels the happy times lasted a little long. I wanted a little more of the serious plot, e.g. investigation of what happened 17 years ago, the scheming that the silver fox is doing behind-the-scenes, or court politics. Because this didn’t happen much, the last 10 episodes felt rushed. I knew a lot was going to happen, that’s why I wanted the happy village arc to end soon. There’s a lot of business ML needs to attend to instead of hanging out in the village!

As for the actual romance, I do like the scenes of the leads together. They have good (not great) chemistry and they are both very likable. I’m glad to see ML didn’t fall into the lovesick puppy trope and forgets he is a ruthless warrior. I like that he only goes soft for her, but resumes his charisma when he’s needed. Aside from the hidden identity part, they communicate, understand each other and have a very loving and healthy, mature romance. Well, but the kiss scenes are quite disappointing. We all know Zhang Ling He can do better. I think even Tian Xi Wei kissed better in “Moonlit Reunion” with Xu Kai than in this drama. But luckily, our toxic couple comes in and saves the day. The secondary romance between Yu Qian Qian and Qui Min has so much potential. Both are great actors, have good chemistry yet the story felt very one-note. There’s not enough backstory about Qi Min’s obsession with Yu Qian Qian. Is it just because he saved her? All their scenes are the same: he’s obsessed with her, she wants to rebel and leave, rinse and repeat. I wish we got more, especially Yu Qian Qian’s backstory with what she said she came from a faraway land.

Let’s talk about the last 5 episodes and how disappointing they are. I will try to not spoil anything. This is the most childlike, unexciting and anti-climatic palace takeover I’ve seen in a big production. While the takeover is happening, on the other hand, we got some family drama/duel. Where is the sense of urgency here?? Additionally, we got dumped a lot of information/revelation about what really happened 17 years ago. Where is the foreshadowing? There’s so much time in the first half of the drama to plant more seeds, so the revelation doesn’t feel so sudden. The breadcrumbs that were shared through a couple flashbacks were not enough. It was a disappointing end to a great start of the drama.

Well, my review is getting long. So I’m going to wrap it up by saying I would only recommend this drama if you like Zhang Ling He, Tian Xi Wei, Deng Kai, Snow Kong and Yan Yi Juan (ML’s uncle). Their acting is great and they have good chemistry. But if you want a well-written and well-executed drama, I do not recommend it. I would go for “Moonit Reunion” if you like Tan Xi Wei. She’s amazing in that one, too.

script needed more work.... basically a weaker version of Fated Hearts

I don't even know where to begin w this.... the first 29 episodes were EXCELLENT and Fan Changyu skyrocketed to the top of my fave FL list after just a few episodes....... and then the writing just nosedived off a cliff in the last 10 episodes to the point where I was *B E G G I N G* for the show to be over and quite literally pulling out chunks of my hair bc how frustrated I was with literally every decision being made.

As I've seen quite a few other reviews mention, the first third showing Changyu's life in Lin'an is 100% the best part of the show. I adored watching Changyu and Xie Zheng start to trust each other and protect each other and I totally understood how they would fall in love given everything they went through. I had practically no complaints about the first act, but as soon as the show tries to expand beyond Lin'an, it collapses under the weight of trying to balance too many disjointed storylines — the political machinations of the Wei family vs the Li family and their attempts to manipulate the puppet Emperor; Qi Min's obsession with Qianqian and holding her captive; the slow pace of trying to interweave Changyu and Xie Zheng's storylines after they were separated in ep 17; etc etc. There was just too much that the show was trying to juggle after the jarring (but imo expertly done) tonal shift with the brutal Lin'an massacre in episode 18.

The main reason my brain likened Pursuit of Jade to Fated Hearts was honestly the political aspect. Xie Zheng nearly dies in a battle due to people in his kingdom working with the enemy kingdom against him. There's a bit more going on in this iteration of this story than in Fated Hearts — in Pursuit of Jade, the Emperor is inept and has no idea what he is doing and the Wei family and Li family are constantly fighting each other trying to gain control of him. And honestly I'm not fully sure how Xie Zheng fits into this as a Marquis (but pls no one explain it to me, at this point I do not care), but, y'know, that's an official title so he clearly has quite a bit of power. While the politics in Fated Hearts always had me fascinated and on the edge of my seat, it's so peripheral for the first ~half of Pursuit of Jade that I just found it impossible to care about any of the people involved, but then it starts taking up so much space that you literally can't ignore all these annoying power hungry and traitorous people and it's honestly agonizing how much screentime they suck up.

Also, a lot of people are probably going to disagree with me here, but the romance left a lot to be desired for me. Changyu and Xie Zheng were so sweet and cute at the start and I was convinced they were skyrocketing to the top of my CDrama pairings ranking, but then their argument in episode 17 happened........ I understand that Xie Zheng is trying to *show* Changyu how he feels by kissing her, but she pushed him off of her and then he kissed her again??? That's assault! I didn't abandon ship over this bc I do understand the desperation and where they both were emotionally, but it's certainly a moment that made me wary and then as the show continues there are just more moments where he ignores her boundaries: Changyu learns Xie Zheng's real identity given he had been using a fake name in Lin'an and she's like "our relationship can't continue bc our differences in status" and he repeatedly pushes back against that and won't accept that things are over; when she pulls away after learning The Secret™️about her father, he again pushes for them to resume their relationship; there's even a scene in one of the final episodes where Xie Zheng has been drugged (I guess by an aphrodisiac given his behavior???????) and he keeps repeatedly trying to initiate physical intimacy with Changyu and I just had to fast forward the scene bc it honestly was making me sick to my stomach how she kept trying to push him off and repeatedly asked him to stop and he wouldn't. There's also multiple scenes where Changyu gets drunk and Xie Zheng stops her from drinking more alcohol and I know it's *supposed* to show his care and concern for her but given how abrasive he is about, it honestly comes off more as him being controlling. idk... by the end I was just incredibly uninterested in their dynamic.

Where do I even start with the Qi Min and Qianqian storyline....... it started really menacing with Qi Min being fixated on Qianqian upon "meeting" her in Lin'an and then it is confirmed by one of his subordinates that she is the woman that he thought she was. Qianqian has flashbacks of a scarred man and she very clearly has a trauma response and panics when she thinks about him. A few episodes later a maid meets Qianqian's son and reports back to Qi Min that "he looks like you when you were a child." so......... the implication is (pretty clearly imo) that Qi Min raped her. he then spends multiple episodes trying to get Qianqian back into his clutches and manages to do so when she attempts to flee Lin'an the day before the massacre. Qianqian and her son are then being held hostage and Qianqian tries to be as amicable as possible to protect her son. Once she facilitates her son's escape, she no longer cares to play into Qi Min's fantasy and starts to fight back in small ways, leading to him chaining her up in a shed. He saves her when she nearly drowns, then tries to track down their son and threatens to kill him again before Qianqian finally manages to escape. But no of course this plot can't end there, and after only like 5 episodes of freedom, she gets kidnapped AGAIN and Qi Min AGAIN threatens to kill their son and the only reason he doesn't go through with it is that Qianqian threatens to kill herself if he harms her son. Qianqian is back to fulfilling his fantasy as she looks for an opening to steal Qi Min's tiger tally and send it to Changyu but then it turns out he let her steal it as a trojan horse...... so she's back to fighting him which, of course, makes him clamp down on his control even harder. Then, in the final episode (or penultimate episode maybe? I already forget even tho I just finished the show a handful of hours ago) Qi Min has the audacity to say that he fell for Qianqian bc she was the only person who wasn't scared of him upon seeing his scarred face......... So the show is really saying "you saved my life and didn't view me as a monster bc my facial deformity, so I raped you".............. WHAT ARE WE F*CKING DOING?????????????????? And as an abuse survivor, I know that emotions towards your abuser can be complicated, but the last two episodes give a vibe that Qianqian is sad to see Qi Min die / touched that he was willing to die for her and..... it just does not sit well with me, it feels more like abuse apologia than a thoughtful exploration of Qianqian's trauma. (And don't get me started on the finale post credits AU nonsense with these two.)

The last 10 episodes literally made me feel like I was being pranked — the sudden slapstick-y and downright cartoonish humor becomes really prominent (and the majority of said humor does not land), characters are making decisions that make no sense with the way they'd been written until this point, a reveal out of nowhere that one of my fave characters was working with Qi Min...... It was MADDENING. Like okay for inconsistent characterization: Changyu is asked to join the military after killing a formidable enemy general and Changyu is insistent that she wants nothing to do with war after the horrors of the Lin'an massacre and that she can't bear to lose anyone else, but then 5 minutes later she's thinking about something that her mentor figure told her and she's donning the armor she was given. In the battle that she joins immediately after this decision, one of Changyu's close friends dies and she feels like it's her fault bc she wasn't fast enough to stop the enemy, but FOR 10 EPISODES the show completely ignores the gravity of that loss and the fact that he's no longer present is never acknowledged until like the final 20 minutes of the finale?????????? Like so many ridiculous things happen I can't even recall all of the batshit insane developments. One character who had spent half the show fixating on his desire to kill Changyu is fatally stabbed by another enemy of his — someone he didn't even view as an enemy until the prior episode, at that! — and one of his allies finds him before he succumbs to his wound and he holds out an item and tells his ally to give it to Changyu bc it will "help her" and then she's like "why would Changyu trust anything I say" and then he's like "you'll also give her this to show your sincerity" AND THEN F*CKING DECAPITATES HIMSELF. What are we doing??????????????? WHAT ARE WE F*CKING DOING??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

anyway I'm losing my train of thought and I have rambled enough. Changyu I love you I wish your show was better bc you are iconic 💗

Full of scenes that I'll rewatch 100 times!

Let me just say one thing that I have not seen being mentioned anywhere else. There are a lot of great dramas, but there are very few that have as many amazing spectacularly crafted scenes and details unique to this show that will stay forever etched in my mind and that I'll be rewatching over and over in the coming years. In fact, the only drama that's comparable in this respect for me is The Story of YangXi palace.

I am looking back over watching this drama and what I am remembering is an absolutely amazing village story arc and a truly satisfying ending . The rest of the drama had its ups and downs but there was hardly any episode that did not contain at least one or two of those truly amazing scenes. In any case, I really recommend this drama.

The Standard Historical Dramas should Aspire To

I didn’t expect to say this, but Pursuit of Jade is the only Chinese historical drama I’ve genuinely enjoyed, and honestly, it should be the baseline for all historical dramas moving forward.

What sets it apart is how real everything feels. The acting by our two main leads is superb, layered, restrained, and emotionally honest without ever tipping into exaggeration. I especially appreciated the minimal makeup and natural styling, which made the characters feel human and believable rather than overly polished.

The cinematography is stunning, soft, atmospheric, and intentional. Combined with the incredible character chemistry, it creates something deeply immersive.

I’ll admit, the plot did start to slip a bit around ep 30, but by then, I was already so attached to the characters that I honestly didn’t care. That emotional investment carried the story all the way through.

If more historical dramas focused on authenticity, performance, and emotional depth like this, the genre would be in a completely different place.

Absolutely unforgettable.

Perfection

I liked every detail about the story, although it was a bit complicated. Acting is pure perfection so does the story it's literally a master piece and I recommend it for every historical drama fans. I think there is more to know about the restaurant owner and I hope for an overlapped drama about her and her story.

Beautiful and captivating. Chemistry was chemistrying lol!

I couldnt wait to finish this one! Chemistry was chemistrying lol! And you also expect that from Zhang Ling He with his lead co stars. Though Xie Zheng was secretive about who he was, you can see he literally fell for Fan Chang Yu and her lifestyle didnt matter much to him after a while because he started to trust her more.
I enjoyed how their relationship blossomed into love. It was beautiful.
What I love most is that they are A STRONG COUPLE, both bad a$$.
They protect each other and their family,
Gongsun Yin being clumsy unintentionally was a nice touch to the drama.
There are so many other characters to talk about but I wont. Just watch it yourself! YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!!
The only thing that made me not give it a 10/10 was the ending.....to me, thought I understand it, I just though it could have been and maybe show their own family instead.

Best wuxia drama of all time

This was such a unique storyline with a strong female lead (physically and mentally strong) that could stand on her own without the male lead. The chemistry between the FML & ML is amazing. I am so sad it ended and will rewatch it soon. Zhang Linghe delivered a great performance in this drama. My first time watching Tian Xiwei and she amazing! Need to watch more of her dramas. Don’t hesitate to start this drama, you’ll be hooked within the first 5 mins of episode 1.

SPEECHLESS

I'm absolutely in shock. Dare I say this is the best Cdrama of the year???. I have watched 100s of cdrama throughout the years starting from 2019 and this is easily in my top 5. I will definitely be rewatching it a million times. Also beware guys Zhang Linghe's face card is so lethal that I forgot to focus on the story a couple of times. All the actors are absolutely gorgeous and Tian Xiewei really did deliver that strong female general role perfectly. Also in absolute love with the second lead couple. The visuals in this drama is actually insane. I really hope they do more projects in the future
