News Let me preface this with - I am not a psychologist nor an authority on manipulation. These words are solely my thoughts and perspectives.

When I started The Early Spring, I expected some manipulation, some type of emotional or mental abuse. Yet I have seen none.
And when I started reading comments calling Luke a red flag, I genuinely paused. What exactly are we calling manipulation these days? Someone said Luke cooking Flora breakfast was manipulation. Someone else said the puppy eyes were manipulation. Others pointed to the small, kind things he does for her as evidence of something sinister. How is that manipulation?
When someone is sincere, that cancels out manipulation. If someone is being kind through deceit, that's manipulation. Those are not the same thing, and I think we've stopped making the distinction.
Manipulation Relies on Deceit
Let's actually define the thing we're accusing this man of.
Manipulation is the act of controlling, handling, or influencing something or someone cleverly, unfairly, or with an intent to deceive. Deceit is the operative word. And Luke has never lied to Flora. He has never tried to make her doubt her own reality.
Is he emotionally guarded? Absolutely. Is he quiet or clumsy with his words sometimes? Sure — he doesn't always say what needs to be said. But being bad at expressing yourself is not the same as being dishonest. His actions stay honest and consistent even when his words fall short.
Manipulation does not rely on Luke being an executive with a strict wall around his heart. It relies on deceit — and he doesn't traffic in that. His struggle isn't about tricking Flora at all. It's about learning how to love her without losing the rigid control he maintains over every other part of his life. I'll be honest, I didn't clock that on my own — I picked it up from the comments after I sat with it — but once you see it, it's there.
He Invests In Her, He Doesn't Use Her
Here's a real marker of manipulation: ignoring your partner's well-being, treating them like a tool or a game. Luke has never done that. He has never played with her emotions or her well-being.
What he does do is actively invest in her growth. He shows up for her physically and emotionally. He steps up when things go wrong. He makes her breakfast. He shows concern when she isn't well. He runs after her when she might be in danger. He covers for her when she's in trouble at work.
And here's the part people keep skipping — manipulators finesse people strictly to get what they want, and they stop once they've gotten it. Luke is doing the exact opposite. There is no "I am going to do this so I can get that from Flora" running underneath any of it. His care doesn't have an expiration date tied to a payoff.
His Words Push Her Forward, They Don't Hold Her Down
The clearest sign of real manipulation, to me, is wanting the other person to stay dependent, weak, small. Luke has never made Flora feel like she needs him — or anyone — to function.
What he does instead is tell her what needs to be done. Bluntly. Because he's incredibly strict and demanding when it comes to expectations, full stop, for everyone. He holds her to the standard of a good worker, and he tells her exactly what that standard is — not to please him, but because her actual goal is to become a capable businesswoman. He may have a piercing tongue, but his words are guiding. They're encouraging Flora toward something, not shrinking her down.
And this ties into why the relationship is secret in the first place — she wants to grow into her own competence without that being complicated by who she's dating. Luke values that in her. It's part of why he offered the secret relationship at all; she'd already told him what she wanted, and he built around it instead of around himself. Watch his face the next time Lumi reports good progress about Flora — that man's heart is genuinely full of joy watching her succeed.
So Why Does This Read As Manipulation To Some People?
Since when did doing regular boyfriend things become manipulation? Making breakfast, worrying about someone, protecting them — none of that is a red flag on its own.
I think we've gotten oversensitive to terms like "red flag," and I think Dramaland has trained us to expect the worst so consistently that we start manufacturing it where it isn't. Sometimes Luke persuades Flora toward a choice. That's true. But persuasion is not manipulation, and let's be real: Flora has not done a single thing in this show that she did not want to do.
She's still got her agency. Every time. That's the whole tell.
I agree! They are both lacking in communication. There is definitely a power/experience gap that can be problematic. But both eventually adjust and respect others' feelings. Luke has softened a lot (I'm on episode 13) and Flora is slowly getting more confident. He can be rude & cold but as you said, he isn't being manipulative. She is hesitant and unsure, but she sticks to her gut. I'm loving this show and really surprised at all the red flag discourse! Let people grow and change and become their best selves for each other. Let love motivate people to be better, isn't that the point?
I love the character of Flora. On the other hand, the character of Luke, No. I wish Flora gets married with the IT guy, her flatmate, who was always encouraging and helping her with her work especially on the list of suppliers in Excel.
Luke has never confesses his love for Flora. Although, neither Flora, but that is understandable because Luke is also her boss. Flora in Episode 18 asks Luke if they can reveal already their relationship, get married, and have kids. But Luke, said, “No.” It is disheartening and poor Flora. How are they going to pivot the story that Luke and Flora would end up as married couple?
I hope Flora ends up with the IT guy at the end of this drama.

it is understandable that she doesnt want to reveal the relationship but when he goes around introducing his gf to his friends, and accepts her requests of keeping it secret at work coz he respects her ambitions, its not understandable for him??? what is this double standard lmao
She never says anything she wants to say out loud, always keeps things from the man she supposedly loves so much, bro just found out she was on dating app, her ex bf shows upto her workplace and they hangout still but somehow she wants to marry him because her mentor told her that chances of marriage in a 3 year + relationship fall drastically , she keeps mentioning how much the job means and is important to her but he is suddenly is supposed to be moved to tears coz she wants to get married lmao
I am not defending luke , he cant hold his mouth and jumps the gun too soon but acting like flora is the greenest tree in the forest is funny
The dating app thing was to help her flatmate, Sun Yun’s business.
I think the story goes wherever the creators want to go. It is unpredictable just like the Luke’s character. You’ll never know when he is going to hurt Flora. It seems hurting her is so random . I feel for her. When he turned her down by not marrying her, it was shocking. So maybe the drama especially the character of Flora has gotten into me. Can’t watch it further. I’ll just read the reviews hereon for updates of the show.
I hope though that Luke’s character stops hurting her.
