I really like this story... it's really good... I've rewatch it many times because it's so good... I like the character of Jujingyi, whose voice is sexy and soft, it suits the character. I also like the character Tian Jiarui...this is the first time I'm interested in him...he's very good, especially the chemistry with JJY

Worth the wait!!

I have been waiting for this drama cuz of Jiarui, Yan-an, and Duling after FOF, but everyone was just so good with their characters that I feel in love with it. I really enjoyed every bit of it, and it was worth all the wait!! It's literally a masterpiece for me like pls everything was mind-blowing, and just literally wow!! "Ruirui" had me giggling as "Ji Ling", but he made me cry too like please I love his tiny face, and adorable smile so much!!

(ps: recently lost interest in costume dramas, so I was literally skipping all new ones no matter how much I looked forward to it earlier, but this one brought my Xianxia and Wuxia heart back to life, keke)

An exquisite masterpiece

This piece stands out as a work of art through the ages, a cinematic masterpiece.

Aesthetically, this is one of the most beautiful pieces I've seen. Each scene, costume, and actor is more beautiful than in the last scene. But this isn't just some idol drama as it initially appears to be, but a painting by a master at work.

I didn't watch at first because it started Ju Jingyi, for example, who was so miscast in In Blossom, and yet so well cast here. She is able to show beauty, delucacy and resilience here just fine. And Chen Duling is undeniably a powerful actress, yet here her beauty also becomes a weapon and a tool.

The story and characters are also compelling and multifaceted, a mix of wuxia and xanxia that resonates creatively. The characters are multifaceted, and only continue to show more depth.

A page turner you can't stop watching, as beautiful as it is engaging, do yourself a favor and watch an episode or two of this masterpiece, and allow yourself to be hooked.

TRULY A WORK OF ART

I love this drama so much, like this drama for me was the best opening for the month of april. I was already super excited to see the chemistry between the couples and when it dropped i was just gagged. It was like a work a of art. The cinematography was so good as expected from guo jingming. Like his previous works were also so good with the cinematography point of view. Acting of the actors was also super good chen duling as always was amazing, tian jiarui's acting is always super good and the way he played all his characters in the drama was just chef's kiss, like each character felt like a different person as if it wasn’t the same actor portraying them. Ju jingyi and joseph really amazed me this time. Ju jingyi I first saw her in beauty of resilience and was amazed how she delivered an amazing performance but over here in veil of shadows its on a whole different level like its just perfect. I cried so much during her scenes when she was going through those rewinds. Like her acting was peak there. Joseph is also an amazing actor. I saw him with bai lu first and loved his acting there and now here. DAMN. Like his fighting scenes were so good. His acting of his father cang hao was just so good like he was looking so good and he portrayed his emotions perfectly even when he was old. Like my man's acting is so good. I LOVE THIS DRAMA I REPEAT. This is such a great drama with an amazing and refreshing plot. Like plot twists, mysteries were everything. Those things kept me hooked up like it was never boring or dragging. Every episode was a roller coaster. As for the screen time I think it was pretty much balanced as they showed the WUWU couple so much during the illusion arc in episodes 10-16 and then again in 26-29. Like there were little moments in the first episodes too where the WUWU couple were flirting with each other. Like those little moments were so cherishing. LOVED IT. JILU couple was amazing tian jiarui amazed me, i was gagged, his drama list is short but every one of his drama is a banger. Ju jingyi's acting was amazing too. Their chemistry was just amazing. Especially their hand chemistry. Like i was screaming through my screen when they were washing each other's hand like there was a smile on my face the entire time. CHEMISTRY WAS CHEMISTRYING. WUWU couple's chemistry was also so good but it was definitely more on the mature side. Like they were the mature couple. They were eating it. Like especially their romantic scenes like I had only one word on my face at that time "DAMN". The biggest plot twist for me was the ending like I didn’t expect it from guo jingming. However, although the ending was good I really wished that wu wangyan and lu wuyi could meet again because I love their sisterly bond. But I loved every single bit of this drama. Side characters were perfect too. Overall it was a perfect visual pleasing drama. Plot was everything, story was amazing. Couples were amazing too. I just loved this drama. DESERVES A 10 THROUGH AND THROUGH.

Absolutely Cinematic

Veil of Shadows is the third drama by Guo Jingming that I have watched, and in my opinion, it stands as his most refined and complete work to date. In terms of cinematography, music/OST, and the actors’ performances, this drama surpasses his previous projects on almost every level.

Cinematography and CGI
For a Chinese wuxia/xianxia drama, this is easily one of the best I have ever seen—perhaps even the most visually stunning Chinese drama to date. The use of color grading is particularly striking. In the early stages of the story, the tone leans toward warm hues, reflecting a lighter and more cheerful narrative. As the story progresses, the palette gradually shifts into darker, colder tones, mirroring the increasing emotional weight and complexity of the plot.
Each shot is carefully composed, with a strong balance between character placement and background elements, creating visually harmonious scenes. This is further enhanced by high-quality CGI that blends seamlessly into the world, making the overall experience incredibly immersive and visually satisfying.
Rating: 10/10

Soundtrack and Background Music
I absolutely love every piece of the OST. The music used in each scene feels purposeful and deeply impactful, elevating the emotional resonance of the story. One standout moment features a scene where the background music is performed by the actor and actress themselves, delivered beautifully and adding another layer of storytelling. It’s not just the acting that conveys emotion—the music itself tells a story.
Rating: 10/10

Storytelling
The narrative demands full attention, as it presents a significant amount of information in a subtle and often indirect manner. Some elements are conveyed visually rather than through explicit dialogue, which I personally find very compelling. This approach allows the audience to engage more deeply with the story.
That said, a few additional explanatory scenes might have helped clarify certain points without diminishing the overall experience. Even so, the story remains engaging and rewarding for those willing to pay close attention.
Rating: 9.5/10

Acting
There is little to criticize when it comes to the performances. The entire cast delivers exceptional work, especially the four main leads. Each actor fully embodies their character, capturing both personality and emotional depth with remarkable precision. As a result, every character feels vivid and alive.
Rating: 10/10

From Confusing Start to Addictive Masterpiece: A Visually stunning Drama with Emotional Ride

I am not a reviewer person, but for this drama I can't not review.

This started out confusing with many different sides coming together and fighting each other, no clear protagonist and antagonist, no background introduction for each character, but it hooks you in with it's plotline. The 'secret' is not unnecessarily dragged and does not cause the cliche misunderstanding that was usually seen in c-dramas and as a visual creature, I also must admit the awesomeness of the cinematography in every scenes and striking visual. The plotline is unfolding like peeling onions, you need to remember previous subtle hints to understand what the scenes meant. It becomes clearer with each hints added. Though I admint the time jump can sometimes be so abrupt, you need to rewind to catch up.

I personally binge watched this series in less than 24 hours, what started with 'we'll see' soon turned into 'NO I must watch this till the end'. But a little warning, you'll need to prepare tissues if you feel hardly for the chars in the stories...

Well, that's from me, you can have your own opinion after watching it. Rewatch value: 8/10 (crying takes a lot of energy.. +.+)

Timeless Love and Leaps of Logic

April has been Veil of Shadows month for me as I was pretty much obsessed with this series until the end. I won't lie, I came for the pretty costumes + music + Ju Jingyi, who has a special place in my heart for her combination of looks, personality, and beautiful singing voice. I stayed for the mystery and mayhem and aesthetic angst.

Guo Jingming delivers his usual brand of extravagantly dark and moody work with handsome faces and guys who have to bare their chest at least once in a story. If you know his directing style, you know exactly what kind of story to expect, but for those not in the know I recommend just checking out these 3 joke GJM Drama Bingo posts for a taste of what's up ahead: https://www.tumblr.com/sillekias/815506909428891648?source=share

Honestly? I loved the characters and stories, which wasn't as convoluted as I feared, and there's even a pretty happy ending at the end! GJM has a way of at least trying to tie up all the loose ends even if they're not all done neatly (or sometimes *too* neatly to be believable). The angst was suitably fragile and epic and bloodstained and tearstained which tickles that drama-loving corner of my heart without wrenching it out completely. It really is the kind of pretty + sad you save to watch on a rainy day. Realistically though, the plot carried the emotions associated with it more than the actors themselves—the acting was accurate and fit the scene but lacked a little bit more of nuance to distinguish different flavors of grief from each other.

Also by the end, everyone in the main cast had shed at least like, 10 single perfect tears each in the middle or end of conversations and while it was neat to watch how well they controlled that tear it also got to a point where I was more numb to the emotions behind it. Like it'll never not be beautiful but it was getting silly by the end!

My biggest beef comes with Episode 28 too because what do you mean ONLY the protagonist and main supporting characters were fighting Jiu Ying and her army of hypnotized foxes at Shilin Sect & the 4 world pillars? Did all of the disciples we saw earlier at the sect just up and vanished? Were they too weak to ever hold up? I mean I think they probably were but it's still kinda funny to not acknowledge that at all and jump straight into the 1v1 across all fights. They even had to rope in You Chi, an outsider demon, to fight one of their battles for them hahahaha it was a little unbelievable. (I know VoS cut one episode's worth of material out since they only got approved for 29/30, I wonder if that last episode could've made a difference?)

Other pet peeves (that are also GJM's signature) is repeating the same info over and over again, and using the same phrases over and over again. Mystery plots are less mysterious when you have to analyze every clue from the start, and in the middle of urgent scenes characters somehow have time to stop and chat before coming to a "realization" about things they already knew all over again. Like in the Han Ba arc when Lu Wuyi stole away with Mu Long they should've KNOWN she was heading for the Firefluff Tree because earlier in the episodes they mentioned it was an important spot, but noooo the protag team had to meet up and discuss it before coming to their senses; Ji Ling sits on the steps moping for half a day after Lu Wuyi steals his ring instead of like, racing to get that thing back or ask for an explanation; somehow during the final confrontation of Jiu Ying vs. Wu Shiguang all of the 2-petal demon hunters can instantaneously reach the locations they need to support the world pillars or facilitated Ji Ling's fast-forward rebirth without any travel time (I'm going to assume they all know teleportation off-screen).

Also You Chi had the worst of it in the original time lines! He saw Xie Lingxi (possessed) kill his Master but then Wu Shiguang reunites with an (incorrupt) Xie Lingxi spirit right afterwards (how jarring is that)!! Then he had to fight off a fox (possessed) in Shilin Sect and killed her successfully with the formations in the sect, only for that to be meaningless because Ji Ling comes back later to un-hypnotize them so NOW 1) he's killed one of Wu Wangyan's dear sisters for no reason and 2) Wu Wangyan has to take that sister's place and sacrifice herself to stabilized the corrupted pillar. Guy just had NO luck in the old timeline and I'm SO glad he got the commander glow-up in the new one cause he deserved a break once in a while!!

I also agree with the other reviewers that Wu Shiguang and Wu Wangyan didn't really have time to shine in their roles compared to the screentime given to Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling. I did LOVE the LuJi storyline/romance (I even made Mii versions of them in my Tomodachi Life LOLOL) but I felt like with more time (and less slow-paced dialogue) both sets of leads could've had amazing moments. WSG was really cool in the finale faceoff scenes and WWY was so intelligent, I wished they utilized them more. Then again, I loved every LuJI scene we got...this is the kind of greed they warned us about in the Bible.

Anyways, all rants aside I DID like this drama a lot and I think the romance was lovely. The demon boys and their tragic fates were all lovely (except Han Ba's was a little contrived, like even Mu Long's actress said 'couldn't he have just written something'), the time loops were a little confusing but ultimately understandable, and I loved loved loooooved Ji Ling's kuudere Dragon Deity persona, he was the perfect mix of cool + powerful + moe + gentle to the ones he love.

For that matter I loved Ji Can too. His makeup was like ridiculously pale but his visual effects? Absolute eye candy and I'd love to see him again. All in all, this was a story about love, loss, and sacrifice: the determination to see your choices through, and the determination to pull your cherished people away from choices that destroy them.

From my personal rating this gets a 8/10 - VERY GOOD with some logic doesn’t make sense, somewhat affecting enjoyment.

The OST is a solid 10/10 and I will be looping Tian Jiarui and Ju Jingyi's version of 不苦 (Not Bitter) for weeks. You know what makes me bitter? They still need to release the music box version (from ep 12 here: https://www.tumblr.com/sillekias/815209721778896896/ok-but-last-but-not-least-i-desperately-need-the?source=share) and duet version of that track ahhhhhh!!!

One of the best cdramas

I rarely find favourite dramas, even though I watch a lot, so many that I’ve lost count. But this drama has now become one of my favourite Chinese dramas.

My favourite dramas are: Goodbye My Princess, Ever Night (S1 and S2), and now Veil of Shadows!

I love TJR and JJY. My lovely and sweet couple!!!

Veil Of Shadows

Veil of Shadows delivers a moody, suspense-driven story wrapped in elegant visuals and slow-burn intrigue. The drama leans heavily on atmosphere–dim lighting, symbolic imagery, and layered character expressions–to build tension rather than relying on constant action.

The plot centers on secrets, identity, and betrayal, unfolding gradually with twists that feel earned rather than forced. While the pacing can feel a bit slow in the middle, it ultimately strengthens the emotional payoff as relationships become more complex and morally gray.

The cast does a solid job, especially the leads, who bring depth to characters that could have easily felt one-dimensional. Their chemistry is subtle but effective, fitting the tone of the story. The soundtrack complements the drama well, enhancing its haunting and mysterious vibe without overpowering key moments.

Overall, Veil of Shadows is a good pick if you enjoy darker, character-driven dramas with a touch of psychological tension. It may not appeal to those looking for fast-paced storytelling, but for viewers who appreciate nuance and mood, it’s worth the watch.

A Dark Fantasy Journey with Flawed Ending

From the first episode, Veil of Shadows draws you into a world that is both beautiful and unsettling. It carries Edward Guo’s familiar directing style, similar to My Journey to You and Fangs of Fortune, with no real departure from his established approach. The series is visually rich and atmospheric—one of those dramas where you pause just to admire the scenery, even as the story pushes you to keep watching.

The story follows Lu Wuyi, a young nine-tailed fox tasked with hunting a rogue demon, in a realm of hidden identities, mystical powers, and intertwined destinies. Instead of focusing on a single romance, the narrative splits across two main couples, each with their own secrets, conflicts, and emotional weight. This dual-pair structure keeps the story dynamic and unpredictable.

A recurring feature in Edward Guo’s productions is the presence of two leading ladies, seen before in My Journey to You (Lu Yuxiao and Yu Shuxin) and Fangs of Fortune (Chen Duling and Cheng Xiao). Veil of Shadows continues this pattern, reinforcing his preference for multiple female leads with distinct narrative importance.

The drama’s tone is dark and melancholic, which is one of its strongest elements. Emotional intensity is present in almost every episode—characters grieve, struggle, and confront inner conflicts in a way that often feels raw. At times, however, it can feel excessive, as if the production leans too heavily on tears even when the situation does not fully warrant it. The music, lighting, and cinematography enhance this mood, making even quiet moments feel heavy and lingering.

One stylistic point that stands out again is the vocal and emotional portrayal of the female leads. As in My Journey to You, where Lu Yuxiao’s subdued tone felt unusually restrained, Veil of Shadows features similar stylised speech patterns, particularly in Ju Jingyi’s character. The effect is intentional but may come across as unnatural or overly delicate, as if the characters are designed to appear distant, refined, and slightly detached from realism.

Character dynamics are a major highlight. Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling’s relationship evolves through tension and gradual trust, while Wu Shiguang and Wu Wangyan bring a mix of rivalry, mystery, and emotional complexity. With four central leads, the series avoids becoming a simple romance and instead builds multiple intersecting emotional arcs.

The cast—Ju Jingyi, Joseph Zeng, Chen Duling, and Tian Jiarui—deliver visually polished performances. Their styling, costumes, and on-screen presence are carefully crafted, strengthening the immersion in this fantasy world. The girls are so beautiful that they are a joy to watch.

The plot itself is layered, combining mythology, inner turmoils and personal vendettas. While engaging, it can become dense, with shifting alliances and hidden motives that demand attention. This complexity is part of its appeal, though it occasionally risks confusion. Later in the series, particularly after the “star stone” arc, the narrative becomes more chaotic. The introduction of time travel—resetting events by a few days—changes the stakes significantly. It resembles Edge of Tomorrow, but with repeated resets that allow deaths to be undone. This reduces the emotional permanence of loss, making tragic moments feel less final and therefore less impactful.

Visually, Veil of Shadows is consistently impressive. Costumes, sets, and lighting are meticulously designed, reinforcing the dark fantasy tone. Even dialogue-heavy scenes remain engaging due to strong visual composition.

Overall, Veil of Shadows is an emotionally charged fantasy drama with strong world-building, layered relationships, and striking visuals. It is best suited for viewers who enjoy complex narratives and darker emotional storytelling. While the plot can become complicated and occasionally uneven, the series remains immersive and memorable.

The ending, however, feels somewhat disconnected from the trajectory built over the first 28 episodes. It shifts into a resolution that seems almost too convenient, especially with the introduction of time-travel mechanics that effectively allow events to be reset. This “easy fix” approach undermines much of the emotional and narrative weight that had been carefully established earlier, as consequences no longer feel permanent.

It reminds me of the comical exchange in Avengers: Endgame, where Rhodey jokingly suggests the simplest solution—just go back in time and eliminate Thanos as a baby. That same kind of overly straightforward fix is what Veil of Shadows ultimately leans into, to my disappointment. By allowing deaths and major outcomes to be undone through temporal resets, the story weakens its own stakes, making earlier sacrifices feel less definitive than they were meant to be.

is there any S2 in the horizion? Coz i want more

You know how we sometimes watch a drama, and as it ends, there's this overwhelming urge to throw up and then cry because it was such a journey - and all you just kind of want to do now is watch it all over again?
I've felt that way about very few dramas and veil of shadows has definitely got to be one of those. I finally also understand the appeal of lengthy dramas the journey was truly top notch, by the time I finished bingeing, all I wanted to do was revisit earlier scenes because you're literally watching the life of several... characters unfold it was so dam confusing at first but you understand eventually

Basically, all of them are saying that this is some high quality drama, plot is fast paced, everyone is beautiful and handsome, story is engaging with a well-paced tale. And to top it all, are the CPs! Yes, everyone is saying that the CPs are as good as ever and that aside from the two main couples Ju Jingyi Tian

My question is there gonna be S2 because upon their reunion, he no longer remembers WuShiGuang. JiLing becomes a florist's assistant and reunites with LuWuYiin a parallel timeline.

I started watching it already expecting to drop it within the first few episodes

I have to admit—whenever I read the reviews of some fellow viewers, I can’t help but feel a twinge of envy for their expertise and depth of knowledge. I’ve seen people who followed Veil of Shadows since the very beginning of its filming last year, and all I can do is stand in awe. I wouldn’t even know where to begin with something like that. I can barely keep up with the sheer volume of Chinese releases each year. On top of that, I’m still watching Scarlet Heart—because, honestly, I could never just abandon the classics—and then there are countless productions from other countries demanding attention as well.

I truly wish I could embrace everything at once. But I lack the time, the stamina, and sometimes even the clarity to separate what’s worth it from what isn’t. And that was exactly how it felt with Veil of Shadows. I pressed play already half-convinced I would drop it within the first few episodes.

Seriously.

The twists felt so relentless, so wildly unpredictable, that I quickly assumed this just wasn’t for me.

Well… I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Not a single episode went by without me craving the next. I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen—not even for a quick popcorn break. I was genuinely afraid to blink and miss my passage into that other world… and honestly? What a show, my friends. What an unforgettable show.

There are so many strengths in this drama that it feels almost unfair to try to list them—they overflow, they exceed, they linger. But I’ll still try, even knowing it won’t be enough.

Costume Design: Simply breathtaking. Huang Wei—whose already flawless career includes work with Vogue and many other prestigious roles—left me with one lingering question: what dimension do you truly belong to? Because these costumes cannot possibly be from ours. They are otherworldly. Every piece feels like art in motion.

I’m not even sure how many tissues I went through just to wipe away the drool while admiring her creations.

Characters: Amid such a rich tapestry of personalities, each so distinct and vivid, one truth remained constant: every single character shines. Each carries a unique essence, yet all contribute meaningfully to the story’s beauty and depth. I loved them all—even the monstrous Jiu Ying. But my heart belongs, above all, to Ji Ling—our “false” Dragon Deity, who, to me, never stopped being divine, not even after the arrival of the Dragon’s tenth son. Tian Jia Rui delivered a performance nothing short of extraordinary. He didn’t just portray Ji Ling—he became him, in a way that feels utterly irreplaceable. To me, he is the soul of this story, its most powerful and unforgettable presence. I will never forget the sweetest little red fox.

And then there’s Lu Wuyi, the second character who captured my heart completely. Her life was nothing but fragments—broken, reconstructed, stripped of memory—until Ji Ling appeared in her world like a quiet miracle. She is, to me, one of the most unique and emotionally resonant characters I’ve encountered. Irreplaceable. Deeply human. Ju Jingyi portrayed her with such grace and sensitivity that it’s impossible not to be moved.

Screenwriting and Direction: Bold, inventive, and fearless. A story that dares to take risks—and succeeds. Its twists are not only surprising but purposeful, carefully woven without leaving behind loose ends or emotional gaps. Guo Jingming (Edward Guo) may be a deeply controversial figure in the artistic world, but talent like this cannot be denied. His early recognition now makes perfect sense to me. I haven’t explored his other works yet, but after Veil of Shadows, I feel compelled to.

Controversial or not, I genuinely hope he continues to share his vision with the world.

In the end, Veil of Shadows is not just one of the best productions of 2026—it’s an experience. One that lingers, captivates, and refuses to be forgotten.

Absolutely phenomenal.
