Gorgeous leads and iconic scenes, but lacking that ultimate spark

I am a massive fan of both Zhou Yi Ran and Chen Du Ling. They are incredibly talented, absolutely stunning to look at, and both delivered excellent performances in Ashes to Crown. Honestly, Zhou Yi Ran serves up some truly iconic, unforgettable moments here (though I secretly hope to see him lead a much more traditional, sweet romance C-drama in the future!).

That being said, there were two main things that kept this show from becoming an unforgettable masterpiece for me:
First, the chemistry between the main leads was severely lacking. If you compare this to Zhou Yi Ran’s previous works like Generation to Generation or When I Fly Towards You or You Are Desire, the distinct lack of feeling and romantic spark here was quite noticeable—and unfortunately, that awkward disconnect carried over into the behind-the-scenes clips as well.
Second, while the setup is interesting, the execution of the plot is quite predictable. For a palace drama, the political intrigue and manipulations are very surface-level. It’s immediately clear who is good and who is bad, without any of the complex mind games you'd expect from a heavy historical show.

They definitely could have done more with the writing, but in the end, it was still a highly addictive and enjoyable watch. It became a daily ritual for me—I literally woke up early every single morning just to catch the new episode as soon as it dropped at 7 AM!

Mission accomplished

The story and the characters both achieved what they set out to do from the start. It was a long way there (maybe not that long since it's only 24 eps) but we got there.

I think maybe the elements surrounding the rebirth and why her could've been explored a little bit more but that's not the FMC's main concern, or a concern at all, so I'm not that bothered by it being vague.
The rest of the story and all the arcs within it were fun. I enjoyed all the strategy battles and all the back and forth that comes with the royal court, all the trust and lack thereof.

Visually it's very pretty and the actors looked amazing. Perhaps a couple times the cinematography did more for the story and the script itself but I don't really care. It was a good time for me.

I watched the series from beginning to end. At times, I watched it out of curiosity. However, there were so many absurdities in the series that I even considered giving up at one point. The screenwriters have ruined another great series. Unfortunately. A prince, under arrest, rebels. He gathers an army. He issues orders. I couldn't understand how this happened. And then the princess says, "You're watching the prince's mansion, aren't you?" Yes, ma'am, we are. There's no activity. I just can't comprehend how the screenwriter could have written these absurdities. This happens several times, and finally, at the end of the series, they kill the prince. Finally. Another thing is the mind games between the two; they supposedly turned the games into intellectual games. They're running the state. The Chief Advisor, the Prime Minister, and the Deputy Princess. We watched the mind games of this trio. The princess won every time. But she suffered the most. I don't understand how that happened. The older brother, who could have seized the state and empire because his step-brother supported the princess, rejects all of this, saying he prefers his own clan to be in charge. In other words, if they were given special privileges by the state, if they were treated as special, he wouldn't want anything. He doesn't want the state or the empire. That's the kind of thinking he has. And in the end, this excessive thinking killed him. He was poisoned. But he set himself on fire. The best part was the burning scene. While burning, he was fanning himself with the fan in his hand. I mean, what can I say to these screenwriters? I'm at a loss for how to criticize them. As for the actors, in my opinion, this duo didn't work. Our lead actors lacked chemistry. I didn't like it. There's already an 8-10 year age difference, which was quite noticeable. The male actor looked too young. He tried to imitate an American actor by making various facial expressions, but that didn't save him. He came all the way here from child acting, so it wouldn't be right to criticize his acting. But in this series, the chemistry between this actress and the actor was almost nonexistent, and her inexperience left its mark on the show. She looks very naive. Very thin and frail. She didn't suit the role, but the director tried to bring her to the forefront by giving her certain airs and making her appear different, but this is noticeable, it doesn't work. Her face also looks small. That's my opinion. However, the supporting roles were very good. The actors playing the villains were quite bad and they made us feel it. I also liked the child actor who played the Emperor.

Beautiful and satisfying

It looked good and the dubbing improved after the first few episodes. I personally enjoyed the story and the plotting (although many people online say otherwise). The plotting is easy enough to follow but does get a bit contrived towards the end. Ending was a little satisfactory, I guess. I would've liked more romance.
Acting was honestly very very good. The main leads and the 2 'villains' were absolutely stunning in their acting skill.
Music was a little distracting at times but otherwise good.
Production (with the exception of the dubbing in the first few episodes which got a bit... questionable) was very high. The costumes were absolutely GORGEOUS and pretty accurate of the time period. The sets were pretty good.
I thought the chemistry between the leads was incredible! I loved watching their cooperation and how they supported each other. This was my first drama with the male lead but I'll keep an eye out for more of his dramas from now on.

Emotionally Weak.

Started watching this because of Zhou Yiran and Chen Duling. Their acting and chemistry was alright but the drama is weak in terms of tugging heartstrings and keeping me on the edge of my seat.

Started off as strong and intriguing, revenge dramas are one of my favourite but I did not particularly feel statisfied with this one. While yes, Chu Zhao lived a second life to get her revenge but it is missing the satisfying element whereby the perpetrator realises his/her's wrongdoings and regrets their actions. In the 2nd life, Xiao Xun had not done anything to Chu Zhao yet. His death did not evoke much emotion for me.

The political moves versus each other was good at first but it got boring and made me uninterested halfway through. So much talk yet so little actions. Too much plotting against each other back and forth. The political plotting became the main attention/plot instead of her revenge towards Xiao Xun.

Fight scenes were great, but could be better. Some of the fight scenes felt a little sloppy, could be due to camera work or how it was executed.

The romance started off good, loved the teasing back and forth and tension between the main leads, but somehow it dissipates when the drama shifts its attention to the plotting. Xie Yanlai was just obeying every single order from Chu Zhao. The romance began to lack here onwards. There was also not much character development during the drama.

Some things that I appreciate was how strong and smart Chu Zhao. She knew how to navigate in the court, I wish we were shown more on how she learned to be very smart and critical about her moves upon becoming the 'Grand Princess'.

There was also so much potential for Xie Yanlai's character development but the drama did not tapped on that.

Overall, the drama's a good watch but I wouldn't say its the best. Its decent at most, good if you need a filler drama inbetween.

Ashes to Crown for me is an exceptional historical drama driven by its fascinating and well-developed characters. Chu Zhao is a remarkable heroine—intelligent, resilient, and determined to take control of her destiny. Her journey from tragedy to empowerment is inspiring and emotionally compelling.

Xie Yanlai stands out as one of the most memorable male leads in recent dramas. His loyalty, courage, and unwavering support for Chu Zhao make their relationship feel genuine and deeply moving. Their chemistry is natural and captivating, creating many unforgettable moments throughout the series ❤️

Xiao Xun is an intriguing antagonist whose ambition and desire for power add tension and unpredictability to the story. Xie Yanfang is equally compelling, bringing mystery, intelligence, and depth to the political conflicts that shape the narrative.

What makes Ashes to Crown truly special is how each character evolves over time, making their choices, struggles, and relationships feel meaningful and believable. Combined with beautiful cinematography, strong performances, and an engaging storyline, this drama delivers an unforgettable viewing experience. It is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys historical dramas with strong characters, emotional depth, and intricate political intrigue.

What I do have a complaint about is the story feeling rushed at times. 24 episodes are not enough for a story like this.

love + hate

The plot of the show had a lot of potential, but the way the writers decided to write it made it fall apart. The editing of the show also looks choppy compared to what i’ve seen within this industry.

I definitely did not see the 24th episode coming. The plot had so much potential of taking it to 40th (the usual that’s going on right now) episode track with an hour of episode. oh well.

I will definitely have to hand it to Yiran and Duling for their marvelous acting! The soundtrack is also pretty darn good.

A shooting star, Burning brightly and blinking out in the middle ("plot holes") till it faded away.

I only write reviews when i have high hopes for a drama, only for them to get destroyed.

So, in a nutshell, this drama can be broken down as follows...

I rate this drama as 2 parts.
1st Half - 9/10
2nd Half - 3/10
Overall - 6/10.

Excellent casting , excellent acting, perfect OST only to be broken down by inconsistent writing and glaring plot holes.
The 1st half went great but for the 2nd half , you literally have to watch it with the mind of a toddler. Felt like some one completely stupid took over the writing.

The best part of this drama and what drew me to it in the first place was the leads chemistry. Sadly they completely ignored this towards the end. The last episode did have a twist and kind of justified some choices made but honestly it felt like taking such a roundabout way to get there that it completely felt unnecessary.

Only watch this for the couple chemistry or if you are a fan of the leads, and even then just fast forward after ep16 or so, last few minutes of the final ep was decent and gave some closure (not for the logic, but for the romance fans) so i can move on without raging....

ART out :)

Let’s be hooked by the show !

Very good show ! Once I started, I didn’t stop until the last available episode (ep 14). I’m not specifically a fan of the FM nor the ML, but the whole pack work beautifully for me : storyline, acting including the children acting, costumes and decor, soundtrack. Fr me, each episode is a pack itself with its own suspense and mystery to solve, but also a logical step through the transformation of the FL from a very naive young girl to xxx (well, let’s wait for the incoming episodes ;)

An Aesthetic Triumph: Where Flawless Cinematography Meets Gripping Storytelling

At its core, the show is a thrilling second-chance survival story. When the general’s daughter, Chu Zhao, is betrayed and killed on the eve of her wedding, she is miraculously reborn with a vow to rewrite her destiny. Instead of fleeing the political turmoil that destroyed her past life, she plunges straight into the fire to seize power. The story never drags, keeping you hooked with high-stakes manoeuvres and deeply emotional character arcs. The acting across the board is stellar and entirely grounds the sweeping drama.

While the plot and performances are more than enough to carry the show, the costume design and artistic focus are what elevate this series into the stratosphere. It is, quite simply, out of this world. The visual composition just kills me. Every single frame feels like a meticulous, high-budget painting. The directors clearly have an obsessive eye for cinematography and spatial depth. Whether the scene is a tense, sprawling standoff in the grand imperial court or an intimate, quiet conversation in a courtyard, the framing is always absolute perfection.

The costumes deserve their own dedicated praise, going far beyond standard historical fare to become a core part of the storytelling. The intricate textures and layering of the traditional garments and battle armour are so incredibly detailed that you can practically feel the heavy weight of the silk, metal, and leather through the screen. The stark, deliberate colour palettes perfectly reflect the characters' internal shifts from innocence to absolute ruthlessness, and the impeccable hair and makeup styling amplify the regal, intimidating presence of the entire cast.

Beyond the breathtaking visual splendour, it is the phenomenal cast and the labyrinth of plot twists that will truly keep you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think you have the political manoeuvrings and character allegiances figured out, the story pulls the rug out from under you with yet another masterful misdirection. The actors anchor these chaotic shifts flawlessly, delivering performances so emotionally resonant that every shocking revelation lands with maximum impact. If you appreciate the grand scale and sweeping aesthetics of epics like Ashes of Love or Eternal Love, the cinematography here will leave you speechless, but it is the brilliantly woven web of deception and stellar acting that solidifies Ashes to Crown as an unmissable 10/10 masterpiece.

Ashes to crown is a show form of GO/ Weiqi

The show was slow to develop (even though it felt rushed in earlier episodes). I mostly liked the show after Chu Zhao returned to the capital. After the end, it felt like a long game that involved foresight to make moves, thinking 10 steps ahead, but not for an immediate win. Like losing a few battles to win the war. There were terrific mind games. Dialogues and monologues were important and nuanced; if not paid attention to, the characters' actions would be difficult to understand. The constant push-pull between Deng Yi and Xie Yanfang was an absolute treat to watch. Not to mention, Xie Yanfang stole the limelight in the last 4-5 episodes. At times, he felt like the main character of the show.
In short, it was an entertaining show about court politics (romance was secondary here).

Great short drama

This drama started out great! The chemistry was 🔥🔥🔥. But towards the middle or close to the end there was little action and got bored with the dialog between chu zhau deng yi and yanfang. I am perfectly happy it was 24 episodes. Will probably watch the first few episodes again. I'm happy with the ending the ML and FL and the young emperor are happy.
