It’s about revenge
I love the first 4 ep and the way she killed Xiaoxun for revenge her dad and her clan just like the way he killed her in her past life (the scene that I was waiting for). He deserves to die from the start I hate him so much. If I was Chuzhao at that time when she came back her life I would kill him immediately when I first saw his face no matter what (my opinion). You know what I almost drop this drama in ep13 and I haven’t watch it for days cuz it’s started to get boring and especially everytime when she plans to do something or what she does is always failed. Anyway, I decided to change my mind and start to binge watch it again on yesterday and I finally finished watching it today. You can say I forced myself to finish watching it because of Zhou Yiran and Chen duling. Lastly, I think it’s not that bad she did great at the end and we are so proud of her. Chu Zhao is showing us that woman can do absolutely anything. Was this review helpful to you?
Where Revenge Is Served Cold, A Tense Battle of Wits
I personally loved the cinematography and color palette, and the fast-paced storytelling (probably because it’s only 24 episodes). The drama wastes no time, there are no unnecessary characters or side plots, and it dives straight into the heart of the conflict.Because the story is rooted in deep political schemes, its conflicts unfold through strategy, manipulation, and constant mind games. So if you’re expecting a straightforward revenge drama where every injustice is instantly repaid, this may not be your cup of tea. The pacing can feel slow, even frustrating. But that’s what makes it work for me, revenge here is deliberate, calculated, and takes time to unfold. As they say, revenge is best served cold. And trust me, the payoff at the end is worth the wait.
I’m a sucker for palace politics, so the power struggle between the three political factions had me completely invested. The pacing is sharp, and the cliffhangers are effective enough to make every episode hard to stop. I watched it while it was airing, so I had to survive the agony of waiting for one episode a day. I never felt the need to fast-forward, and each ending kept me wanting more. My only downside? After watching The Zhan Zhao Adventures, the fight scenes here felt a little too tame by comparison.

That's great
Aches to Crown is interesting from the start. I love revenge dramas, so I enjoyed this one a lot. The story kept me curious, and the script was amazing. The actors and actresses were very talented. I especially loved Zhou Yiran and Cheng Duling. The strong female lead was my favorite part. I can't wait to see what happens in the next episodes. Was this review helpful to you?

Breathtaking!
Just completed the first 4 eps. And my first thought is that it's breathtaking. The visuals and aesthetics are absolutely wow, and the pacing is fast without being confusing. I think they did an amazing job setting the mood and the plot. And the mind games are quite good also! The FL tricks not just the other characters but also the watchers, which I loved. But it does get a little confusing, and I'm not sure if that's intentional or not? Because each time she deals with the others, she pretends to lose only to take them by surprise. So in ep 4, when she actually loses, it wasn't apparent at all. Her stabbing the palace worker and getting agitated at Xiao Xun , I was kinda still waiting for a counterattack, like everything was part of her plan. It wasn't until the last few mins of her convo with the ML that I wasn't sure she had actually slipped. Or maybe she didn't, and she's just reeling the ml in. Maybe the future eps will show it, im not sure.
And the twists, they are really good but come so fast that it doesn't let you fully immerse. Not bad though, just something I noticed...
And im not sure is it just me or the fl's eye makeup is kinda weird? idk its kinda scary and makes the emotions look weird? CDL does do a amazing job but yeah the eye makeup is really throwing me off. And ZYR. Man is really slaying his role. And as usual he has more chemistry with blood than anything else lol.
Also speaking of chemistry, I don't really feel the promised sizzling chemistry yet, especially compared to both actors' previous work with their co-leads. Maybe its because according to the plot they dont fully trust each other. yet and aren't on each others side. But honestly, the eye to eye shots, i couldnt feel the apparent chemistry at all, esp with CDL's eye makeup ruining the entire shot for me.
But plotwise i think its quite a good start. I would honestly love it more if she also tricks everyone including the ml, instead of getting nerfed for the ml to scoop in and save her. Honestly i would prefer it if the ml on his side also tries to trick her and then they meet each other halfway. But i think 24eps is too short to pull it. But yeah! 4 eps is too short to judge. But so far so good! ^^

Seven episodes in and nothing has happened to absolutely anybody in this supposed revenge drama
If you are looking for a tight, high-stakes political revenge drama where characters use genius-level intellect to systematically destroy their enemies... keep running. Seven episodes into Ashes to Crown, and the only thing this script has successfully executed is the audience’s patience. The show starts with a classic, brutal betrayal and a time-regression reset. It sets up a premise driven by trauma and heavy guilt, but completely collapses the moment the FL opens her mouth.
Instead of a cautious, calculating strategist haunted by her past life, the script serves up a textbook "girlboss" trope. The FL walks around with unearned confidence, smirking and throwing her weight around like an untouchable mastermind, when in reality she is a walking disaster zone who hasn't accomplished a single concrete thing
.The most infuriating part of this show is its narrative scam. It’s packaging mild inconveniences as massive "gotcha" moments. Every single episode follows the exact same lazy formula. The FL will execute a completely basic, logic-defying stunt. The camera will dramatically cut to the villains looking wide-eyed and pulling cartoonishly passive-aggressive sour faces in the hallway, accompanied by an aggressive, dramatic soundtrack to convince you a chess piece was taken off the board. But if you actually look at the state of the plot, absolutely nothing has changed. The villains still have their freedom, their titles, their money and their heads. The script treats the antagonists like protected species, refusing to let them face permanent consequences because the writers need to drag this out for 24 episodes.Meanwhile, the ML —who actually makes the lethal, high-stakes moves like putting a literal blade to the corrupt Emperor's throat—is treated like an accessory and a personal errand boy by the FL, completely ruining any organic dynamic or respect between them.
The cinematography is pretty and the costumes are nice, but the flashy editing is just a smoke screen to hide a hollow, wheel-spinning script. Don't let the intense background music gaslight you into thinking this is a complex chess match. It's an absolute joke of a revenge drama where seven episodes deep of 24 at approximately 45 minutes each, literally nothing has happened to nobody. Save your time and watch something where victories actually mean something.

Should Have Called This Nonsense "From Ashes Back To Trashes"
Negative Points1. No proper written character for the ML & the FL. The story is shot solely from the perspective of the FL. But the transitions are too fast for me to even connect with her. ML so far feels like the loyal hound of the FL who only barks if the FL permits it (No offence to the actors, honestly, but I am absolutely seething due to this stupid writing). There is nothing that can evoke an emotional connection with any of the leads. I absolutely love female-centric revenge dramas. However, in this drama, the FL is an absolute moron, honestly. She is weak, useless, and hardly has any brain. Sorry to say, but as much as I like Chen Duling, turning and giving creepy looks is not enough to convince me that she is smart enough to outsmart her enemies if she keeps getting into trouble and fails to come out of it by herself. She mostly falls into her own traps and just cries like a child. This is absolutely ridiculous. There is a lack of depth in political conspiracy, especially when the move comes from the FL, which is all superficial and nothing has any depth. If it were a properly written drama and she were not the FL, then she would never have succeeded against those scheming antagonists. I don’t know why they have left out the brain of the FL outside the drama while making the antagonists keep their wits. Was it a deliberate move to make the FL look foolish in front of the viewers? If you don’t want to follow the novel, I don’t mind at all as long as it has been written well. What I hate most is to mislead the viewers by promoting the FL as a strong, ruthless one, but then reducing the FL to being the total opposite of what was promised. Why make her strong in the name only, but fail to present her on screen like that? If you can’t brainstorm on how to present her as a strong, independent, intelligent person, then you should have hired a better screenwriter. This is completely unacceptable. While I understand she is a human being and can’t possibly outsmart so many damn smart villains all the time, she should not also be like a complete idiot. Moreover, to show the FL smart and independent, you don’t need to present the ML as a guard dog. There does not need to be much screen time as long as the characters have enough depth, and you have a good actor to play it out. Both the leads are total victims of this drunk on short drama style writing, horrendous voice dubbing, and 4x speed direction with an overdose of red filters.
2. The acting is absolutely weak from both leads. While Zhou Yiran was still somewhat passable in emotional scenes, Chen Duling was absolutely poor. I could hardly feel her emotions. She is normally good at giving cold murduerous looks. But I don’t know what happened, but her acting was not good at all. She was so good in the Glory and I was so eager to watch the actress-director duo from the Glory but was utterly disappointed. The production team did Zhou Yi Ran dirty again as though he is the ML, but he seems to exist only to keep this dumb FL alive to give creepy looks in fancy costumes. The production team did the most dirty to Chen Duling, honestly. How come her character is reduced to being a damsel in distress despite it being a female-centric drama? Did she achieve anything post her rebirth? Actors can’t really perform brilliantly with a half baked utter stupid script. The screenwriter and producer are the key people who need to take the blame for his half-written garbage. Complete waste of an actor like Zhou Yiran. Except for a few emotional scenes, he looked flat to me. Chen Duling was probably struggling with how to present this poorly written garbage kind of bad FL’s Character. The screenwriters should probably think about changing their profession.
3. The direction and screenplay felt absolutely sloppy. Does the director have a flight to catch? If not, why is everything moving so damn fast that the entire story feels like a compilation of flashbacks? All of the action scenes look like they just started and ended in 10x. No catchy or gorgeous moves. No proper battle or even fight sequence. Looks like everyone is in a hurry. Why is during the battle, despite a veteran military general (who works under her father) being present, she, who has no idea about military battle tactics, is leading the battle? She does not know any self-defence at episode 01. But suddenly knows archery at the ambush at the bandits' lair, knows battle tactics, and now suddenly knows swordplay. What is this rubbish? At least write consistently. Are they so short of budget that they can’t even arrange for battle armor for the ML and the FL? The FL goes to the battlefield to face the enemy general in her Grand Princess makeup and attarir and jewellery to give a poorly written speech of patriotism or whatever it was. Then suddenly comes out of nowhere to reinforce the ML and gets trapped along with him to create an opening for the FL’s mother, who suddenly came and baam sacrificed herself to force poorly acted melodrama in the middle of the battlefield. Can this FL do anything other than crying and giving big melodramatic speeches? I am tired of watching her do foolish things. Who wrote this rubbish? I will avoid this screenwriter’s further work.
4. No chemistry between the leads. Their romance story feels shallow and based on life-saving graces. The actors have absolutely zero chemistry. In many scenes, Chen Duling felt awkward to me. The romantic scenes between the leads start out of nowhere, looking misplaced and unnatural. Even their misunderstanding felt so rushed and out of place. Didn’t you trust him the most, and now you won’t even listen properly. Also, why is the ML not explaining properly? For example, the ML got stabbed and is on bed rest, and in the next scene, he is making pastries with the FL in the kitchen while romancing with her hair.
5. There are too many inconsistencies with the story. Why would she scream and alert her enemy if she is so intelligent? The first thing she does after getting a 2nd chance is head straight to the main villain and threaten to kill him for the murder of her father. She is taking the prince back to the palace, which is the most dangerous place during a palace coup. Is she that idiot? She talks a traitor out of committing treason with a few lines. It was a palace coup, but the main villain comes with this little soldier. Is the production house struggling so much that they can’t afford enough extra to make it convincing enough? How come the secret army soldiers are dropping suddenly from above as soon as the signal is sent? How come with this little army, she can stop a palace coup with this many rebel soldiers without any planning, whereas the enemy is too prepared? How is this even believable that she, with this little sloppy planning, managed to stop a man who planned to seize that throne for 2 decades? Would not a man like that have a contingency plan? It’s laughable. During a palace coup, how come the soldiers are falling dead left and right without putting up any fight? It feels like a video game instead of a drama. I would find better thrills in a video game, I guess. The inconsistencies are too much for me to even recite. I might have to write the entire script of the drama.
6. Not only this drama, but many other dramas this year have mocked the viewers with a completely different story in the drama after promising/ misleading it about it being an adaptation of the novel. If it irritates you to write an intelligent, strong, sharp FL along with a proper character for the ML in a female-centric drama, then why pretend to adapt such a novel and destroy it? Just write an original script with whatever you like. Also, in the name of screen space, why did you write such a shallow ML character? Instead, write a proper ML who can shine whatever screentime he gets and adds something of his own to the overall story instead of existing just to serve the purpose of the FL.
Positive Points
1. The only positive thing about this drama is the OST album. It is catchy and melodic, but still NOWHERE NEAR enough to save this sinking ship.
Overall, this is an absolutely shitty drama with nonsense half-developed twists filled with plotholes, which is coupled with poor acting from the leads who have absolutely zero chemistry.

Dropped....
Couldn't believe that I reached ep 15 before deciding to drop this.I wanted to like this drama but for the life of me, I couldn't understand anymore the intricacies of the political rivalries.
Added to this, is that I do not like the FL's character.
Like what other reviewers' have noted, I find it extremely unlikely that a once naive girl suddenly turns into a tactician followed by the whole military army. And requesting the late emperor that she be bestowed the title of Grand Princess????? on the pretext of protecting the child emperor???? It is obvious that she just used it as a stepping stone for her revenge against her ex....
The fight scene in the gorge? It is more believable for the FL in Pursuit of Jade and Legend of the Female General to do fight scenes because they are dressed for the part. But here??? She is still in her red dress and awkwardly fights along her army.
So many flaws for a drama which started off strong.....

Ashes to Crown
Love it so far. Great cast, acting superb, story well written. I would watch it again. Male/female lead and supporting cast great acting. I am enjoying female leads cunning intellect. Male lead good with that sword. Must watch. I'm only 4 episodes in, hooked. Hope you enjoy as much as me. I gave this 10s across the board. I enjoy Cdramas more than others. I love the historical ones best. Was this review helpful to you?
Now at E3 the actors are all good. The male lead... Isn't just for me. When I saw it was zhou yiran in a historical drama, i almost not watch this but I have been waiting for this drama bcs of CDL. His aura and appeal is there but to be honest, he is not visually appealing with historical costume. Don't get me wrong, I am obsessed with his visual after watching him in 12 letters. I just really think he's not attractive enough for historical costume drama. Though he still gives me giggles bcs he is one of my fav modern drama actors.
Update: I take back my words, zhou yiran did a good job, his aura and all is too good for my heart. I have been avoiding generation to generation but I might try watching it after this!
Xiao tian is so attractive lol. I love that scene where a-zhao tripped. I've seen a lot of xiao tian and cdl's dancing videos in Tiktok I might even think he's the male lead.

I really wanted to like this drama
I really wanted to like this drama because the reuters were genuinely impressive, and the two leads deliver solid performances. The core story is also passable enough to keep things moving. Unfortunately, the overall execution completely pulled me out of the experience. The post-production is incredibly distracting. The jump cuts feel random, the framing choices are awkward, and the color grading often looks off. Instead of enhancing emotional moments, the editing constantly breaks immersion.
The writing also struggles to build a believable world. The dialogue rarely feels natural, and there’s very little character setup to help viewers understand motivations or emotional stakes. I kept asking myself why the characters were making certain decisions because the drama never properly establishes their goals or internal conflicts.
One of the biggest issues is how plot developments seem to come out of nowhere. The sudden obsession with the throne and the FL’s abrupt desire for absolute power feel underdeveloped rather than earned. Important story beats are introduced without enough buildup, making the narrative feel disjointed and emotionally unconvincing.
Overall, while the cast does their best with the material, the weak storytelling and distracting production choices made this a difficult watch for me, and ultimately why I decided to drop it.
