During the late Edo period, Kasahara Ryosaku works as a doctor in a small town of the Fukui Domaine. He becomes aware of a surefire way to prevent smallpox. The method originated in a foreign country. Ryosaku asks Doctor Hino Teisai in Kyoto for advice, and he even spends his own money to bring smallpox seedings to the Fukui Domaine. Ryosaku keeps working on the unprecedented smallpox prevention methods with his wife Kasahara Chiho’s support despite various difficulties.
